The Nature of Religious Melancholy: Edward Taylor's Poetic Treatments of a 17th Century Epidemic

Johnson, Sheena K 12 August 2014 (has links)
Edward Taylor indicates an awareness of 17th century religious melancholy in his "Preparatory Meditations," but the minister is largely excluded from current discourse surrounding religious melancholy in Puritan communities. Taylor's presence in this conversation serves to further understanding of religious melancholy in America and also of the complex nature of the condition that is of interest at the present time. Through an analysis of dominant images of the conversion experience from Edward Taylor's poetry, this thesis argues that Taylor provides intimate knowledge of the nature of religious melancholy and also offers a treatment option for the ailing Puritan in the form of hope for salvation.

Arteaga-Uribe, Andrés 17 November 2011 (has links)
This dissertation demonstrates how the Weltanschauung found in Álvaro Mutis´s oeuvre is profoundly influenced by a late romantic conscience found in the Latin American posvanguardia generation (1920 – 1940). Melancholy –as late modern affective condition- and fading of the subject –as narrative and aesthetic imaginary- are two central figures in his fictional universe. As a consequence of this, some of the heroes and topics in Mutis’s oeuvre are in dialogue with the main topics of the first literary movement in Hispanic America, Modernism. Some of them are: a religious ambiance in their prose, hedonism, cosmopolitanism, decadentism, Latin American landscape as entropy and a fractured self. There is a narrative logic in the literary corpus analyzed –which one can extend to Mutis’ s oeuvre. The hero, before starting his adventure, begins a psychological phenomenology called “fading of the subject”, which is a symbolic process that affects not only his stability as a hero but also the enterprise to which he is committed; all this thanks to his “melancholic condition”. This emotional process begins by revealing poetic images of internal destruction, amalgamation and death, which the hero transfers to the external world. In some of the texts analyzed this process concludes by producing death and devastation (El Húsar, La muerte del estratega), in others there is an urgent need to a symbolic resignification (Amirbar) that allows the hero to survive and start a new adventure. This “spiritual condition” is something Maqroll - Mutis’ main character- knows well when someone asks him about his precarious physical condition, “The tropical fevers...I have them already!” (Amirbar 491)

Poe's Gothic Protagonist : Isolation and melancholy in four of Poe's works

Wrangö, Johan January 2008 (has links)
<p>This paper will argue that there are similarities between “The Raven”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “Ligeia” and “Berenice” in their treatment of the common motifs of isolation and melancholy, and, furthermore, that their protagonists are similar due to their relation to these two motifs. The paper will also argue that the usage of the motif of isolation is a strategic way for the author to emphasise the Gothic horror. In order to support my argument, I will, firstly, provide an outline of how melancholy, isolation and the Gothic were understood in the nineteenth century. Secondly, I will demonstrate ways in which the works are similar. By comparing the characters’ personalities and behaviour to each other, I will illustrate how melancholy and isolation are represented in similar ways in the works of this study. Thirdly, I will show how the motif of isolation reinforces the Gothic.</p>

Psicose, dor e escrita: a produção na melancolia / Psychosis, pain and writing: the productin in the melancholy

José Maurício Bigati 01 July 2009 (has links)
Questioned since Aristotle, melancholy is a diagnosis that in psychoanalysis is situated among the psychosis. Different from subject of the neurosis, which, facing the loss of the subject goes into mourning so that another object comes to occupy the investment of the libido; in melancholy, the shadow of the lost object hides the shine of any other object in the subjective economy of the subject, once this introjects the affectiveness linked to the lost object as fundamented by Freud in Mourning and Melancholy. From Lacan psychosis is specified by the lack if the meaningful Name-of-the Father, without which, the edifications of the subject would be subject to a psychotic crack down. Using as a tool the structured unconsciousness as language, we shall focus the peculiar truth that points to the melancholy, examining its clinical singularities and the function of its written production. For such we shall use the poems received from a patient and the nice compositions of the poetess Florbela Espanca.

A impermanência do processo: poeira, caminhos, objetos / The process impermanence: dust, ways, objects

Cristiana Nogueira Menezes Gomes 27 March 2009 (has links)
This dissertation raises a set of questions related to the reflection of the artistic process. Tristes tópicos: um estudo sobre a melancolia em Freud / Sad topics: a study on melancholia in Freud.

Felipe de Oliveira Castelo Branco 15 April 2009 (has links)
This works aim is to study melancholy in two ways: the first way we call historical investigative will search for this concept in the ancien philosophy (Aristote) wich takes the legacy of hipocratical medicine, and will also study melancholy in modern psichiatry. In other words, we are going to study the way melancholy was build as a body afection in this two fundamental historical moments of the term. The second research way will analyse the fundamental inner function of melancholys concept in freudians work: its function in the construction of a proprierly psycoanalitical base of reflection on this disease, and its conceptual neighborhood relations (where are engaged some of the most important concepts of the freudian work)

Finalmente... / From a consideration of the increasing importance of depressive states of mind today, and the finding of relative lack of consensus on this topic in the psychoanalytic milieu, this research proposes to recover the theoretical context that allowed the formulation of the melancholy’s theory presented in the article Melancholy and Mourning (FREUD, 1917[1915]). It is to analyze the foundations of Freud's theory of melancholia, in order to provide more accurate conceptual elements that contribute to clarify the problems that exist around the subject until today. The research methodology is based on reading and textual and conceptual analysis of the subject delimited in selected works from a bibliographical review. The study revealed that the foundations of Freud's theory of melancholia are set on a tripod formed by the etiological model of the transference neuroses, by applying this model to the narcissistic neuroses (through the formulation of the concept of narcissism and its derivatives), and by the dialogue between Freud and his followers, who have directly contributed to the construction of several elements that have shaped the Freudian propositions. Faced with this, it seems that the Freudian theory of melancholia lies at the intersection of a theoretical and clinical path that leads from transference neuroses to narcissistic neuroses, and culminating in the establishment of the second topical theory of the psychic apparatus. The results of this research show that the formulation of Mourning and Melancholia is due to the theoretical development of Freudian theory, and also resulted from the dialogues and exchanges between theoretical contributions coming from the psychoanalysts of his time, and the current controversies reflect the discussions that occurred during this period. Finally, it is expected that this research offers elements... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
