Internal representations of auditory frequency: behavioral studies of format and malleability by instructions

Nees, Michael A. 16 November 2009 (has links)
Research has suggested that representational and perceptual systems draw upon some of the same processing structures, and evidence also has accumulated to suggest that representational formats are malleable by instructions. Very little research, however, has considered how nonspeech sounds are internally represented, and the use of audio in systems will often proceed under the assumption that separation of information by modality is sufficient for eliminating information processing conflicts. Three studies examined the representation of nonspeech sounds in working memory. In Experiment 1, a mental scanning paradigm suggested that nonspeech sounds can be flexibly represented in working memory, but also that a universal per-item scanning cost persisted across encoding strategies. Experiment 2 modified the sentence-picture verification task to include nonspeech sounds (i.e., a sound-sentence-picture verification task) and found evidence generally supporting three distinct formats of representation as well as a lingering effect of auditory stimuli for verification times across representational formats. Experiment 3 manipulated three formats of internal representation (verbal, visuospatial imagery, and auditory imagery) for a point estimation sonification task in the presence of three types of interference tasks (verbal, visuospatial, and auditory) in an effort to induce selective processing code (i.e., domain-specific working memory) interference. Results showed no selective interference but instead suggested a general performance decline (i.e., a general representational resource) for the sonification task in the presence of an interference task, regardless of the sonification encoding strategy or the qualitative interference task demands. Results suggested a distinct role of internal representations for nonspeech sounds with respect to cognitive theory. The predictions of the processing codes dimension of the multiple resources construct were not confirmed; possible explanations are explored. The practical implications for the use of nonspeech sounds in applications include a possible response time advantage when an external stimulus and the format of internal representation match.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the James Gibson's (1979/1986) concept of affordance and its theoretical and philosophical implications, specially those related to the notions of information and perception. As a visually sensitive organism, humans move to reach their goals and have great part of their activities under direct control of the vision, allowing a dynamic interaction with the environment. Two theoretical approaches to the agent-environment interaction based upon visual perception were reviewed in this study - the representationist approach, stating that mental representations are necessary to visual perception, and the ecological approach, assuming that the environment can be perceived without involving representational processes. According to Gibson, many issues regarding to how visual information is internally built by agent should be changed to issues regarding to the sources of visual information in the environment, relevant to agent's behavior. The gibsonian concept of information reconciles two aspects of the relation agent-environment, the inseparable concepts of invariants and affordances. The notion of invariants is based on the idea that patterns of energy that stimulate the senses contain information that specifies the environment. The concept of affordances specifically refers to the agent, expressing possibilities of action offered by the environment. Additionally, the present study discusses a variety of aspects related to the concept of affordances, such as the notion of reciprocity (animal-environment, perception-propriception, and perception-action), the relations with events, its ontology, and its main criticisms by cognitive scientists.

As tramas de Mnemosine : a memoria nos primordios da teoria freudiana / Mnemosine's plot : memory in the origins of Freudian theory

Casanave, Carlota Maria Ibertis de Lassalle 21 February 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Luiz Roberto Monzani / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-10T02:25:21Z (GMT). This PhD Dissertation explores the concept of underlying memory in Freud's work, between the publication of On Aphasia: A Critical Study, in 1891, and Psychopathology of Everyday Life, in 1901. It is argued, firstly, that memory has a creative nature, based on certain associationism sui generis proposed by Freud. The specific features of Freud's position are discussed, showing why it is not analogous to that proposed by Stuart Mill. Secondly, it is argued that the creative nature of memory finds diverse forms of manifestation: a) when constituting, on the basis of first experiences, the psyche's nucleus of desires and aversions; b) when transcending, from time to time, the rnnemonic traces that correspond to the developmental phases; c) in the phenomenon of a posteriori determination; d) when associating rnnemonic traces material, giving raise to condensations and displacements in the primary processes; e) when shaping desires and fantasies as memories; and f) when re-meaning the past by introducing new connections. All these forrns of manifestation are based on associative' mechanisms. The explanation of these forms provides evidence for a change in Freudian thought on the role of experience. The priority given initially to real experience dirninishes with the discovery of child sexuality. Thus, desire and fantasy acquire greater weight in the psyche' s deterrnination, without discarding the relevance of real experience, which lies at the basis of the forrnation of both. Three points in the Freudian elaboration of memory seem crucial in order to support the hypotheses proposed above: the role of the mnemonic register of real experience, the multiplicity and transformation of rnnemonic inscriptions, and, finally, the register as memory of the desired. Each one of these issues constitutes the focus of a thesis chapter. This dissertation examines the aspects that define the creative náture of memory, while considering the roles of register, conservation and remembrance. Freud is thus inc1uded in a long philosophical tradition that approximates memory to imagination / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia

Representação no campo do traumático: a enfermidade grave na infância e o impacto sobre o desenvolvimento / Representation in the Field of Trauma: a serious illness childhood

Flávia Cristina Amaro Queiroz 04 November 2011 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate the psychological dynamics of child victims of a serious illness and possibility of allowing greater mobility of the psychological dynamics of these children through recreational technical and search representative from the premise that serious illness in childhood is a traumatic situation among many others possible. Outline for such an understanding, a journey that starts in the first registration and the construction of mental representations and then present how a traumatic situation may weaken the mind. We emphasize the possibility of representation by the psychoanalytic interventions, assuming that it is through the symbolic condition that the individual develops. We conducted a theoretical and clinical study of two children who underwent surgery for repair of congenital heart disease and, consequently, admission to the intensive care unit. The study consisted of psychoanalytic interventions which recommended the offer of a continent with reverie, with a proposal to accompany the child in confronting issues that are beyond the realm of representations, through the play, not favoring the strike and not freeze your symbolic condition. The Drawing-stories was used at the beginning and end of the process as support for interventions and evaluations. Through psychoanalytic interventions, theoretical-technical resources used, we observed some changes in the line representing the beginning of a conflict and change in the way children play and express themselves graphically

Creativity and resilience : in search of levers promoting better rehabilitation following a disability.

Ferrer, Marie-Hélène 29 March 2013 (has links)
Throughout their lives, humans have to deal with various events, which can sometimes be painful, traumatic and disabling. Facing these accidents of life, they must adapt in order to find a balance and a satisfactory quality of life. This thesis allows the study, in the field of health, of the factors involved in the adaptive creativity and the resilience, in order to identify levers likely to promote adaptation and rehabilitation. The starting point is the observation of the favorable effect of a cognitive training conducted by means of a digital device on stimulated functions but a more limited impact on daily life and social reintegration. This observation, made on a population of TBI, leads us to propose a new concept of rehabilitation based on the resilience and the creativity. We check that resilience can be considered as a form of adaptive creativity used to respond to the vagaries of everyday life. The task of Tangram is more precisely studied since it appears to be usable as a tool of cognitive stimulation. This task entails some processes involved in the development of mental representations, which have a major role in problem solving. At the end of this work, four orientations are proposed for the creation of a cognitive rehabilitation program designed to promote the adaptability of patients by relying on their psychological and cognitive reserve. They consist in the redefinition of a problem into a challenge, the mnesic and attentional stimulation, the training in Mindfulness and the consideration of the processes involved in creative problem solving.

The specificity of piano music reading for blind and visually impaired musicians : effects of mental representations of musical notations on the memorizing process

Bouabid, Nadhir 01 July 2013 (has links)
The present work involves an analytical description of the behaviors of blind and visually impaired pianists when memorizing and rendering on the piano various tasks presented to the ear or on written material adapted to their visual disability. This adaptation, which consists in transcribing ordinary music scores in braille, for the blind, or in large print, for the visually impaired, entails important consequences. Two conditions result in those musicians having to perform a very difficult integrating and synthesizing task: on the one hand, musical braille is complex, being highly abstract and characterized by permanent spatial linearity; on the other hand, the technique for enlarging ordinary texts is not compatible with synthetic reading and a very restricted visual field. Those circumstances lead us to investigate how those musical notations and the mental representations they generate affect the memorizing process when vision is totally or partially lacking. The main objective is to pinpoint the specific processes underlying the assimilation of the data inscribed on the reading material. To this end, I have carried out a case study involving young non-professional blind and visually impaired pianists using diverse reading procedures.

A realidade, entre Freud e Lacan

Estevão, Ivan Ramos 18 May 2009 (has links)
In Freuds theory, the reality concept is central, it have been worked from the beginning to the end of it. We sustain that it is the same with Lacan. Articulating perception and representation, Freuds conception is that reality is a sense production. It means there isnt, to us, a reality merely given: human reality is built. Lacan, starting in Freud, emphasizes the importance of the relation between the subject and the Other on producing the sense that is the matrix of human reality. The exposition about Freud uses analyses of the concept of representation and its importance on neuroses theory, passing thru concepts of psychics reality, fantasy and the theory of individual constitution, getting to the crucial and late idea of helpless. In the matter of Lacan, we retake the conception of register of symbolic and conceptions of (significante) and meaning and its articulation with Oedipus age and the constitution of the subject. The mirror stadium, the clinical structures, the construction of the imaginary register and, the schemas R and L are referred as elements of explicitation of reality constitution from the relation to the Other. We finish on the reference on the register of real starting from the introduction of a object. In Freud and Lacan, in different ways, but not excluding each other, reality is thought from the inter subjectivity and the constitutive helpless situation of the subject (Freud) or lack (Lacan).

Influence de la dimension spatiale et des capacités mnésiques des lecteurs sur les processus de suppression et de réactivation d’informations textuelles / Distinction between two processes : inhibition and Suppression as function of irrelevant spatial information and inappropriate spatial information

Renau Op't'Hoog, Céline 12 July 2010 (has links)
The objective of this research is to study an aspect of comprehension text; the construction of the mental representation and the preservation of coherence, according to working memory capacities of the reader. To understand a text, the reader is brought to elaborate a mental representation of the situation evoked by this one (i.e., the model of situation). To this aim, the reader should put in relation the information in the course of treatment with those handled earlier and delete information became irrelevant to maintain the coherence of the meaning (Kintsch, 1998; Gernsbacher, 1990). Memorial skills are thus essential in the implementation of this coherence. Besides, this research of coherence should be made from several dimensions of the text, namely the spatiality, the temporality, the causality, and the emotion (Zwaan, Langston and Graesser, on 1995).Our first objective was to highlight the existence of the mechanism of suppression of the spatial information during the construction of the mental representation. For that purpose, we presented texts containing two spatial informations, one of this information was developed in a preferential way (the other one becoming irrelevant) and we made vary the quantity of textual data presented according to texts. This protocol allowed us to test the inhibition, and the suppression of this spatial information. To study the link between working memory capacities and the process of suppression, we used a test that evaluates the capacity of the working memory of the participants (i.e. Corsi’s blocks). Our second objective was to test in a more complete way the implementation of inhibition and suppression processes during reading of a text according to the type of presented information (relevant, irrelevant and incoherent with the story of the text).Obtained results allowed us to confirm the existence of a process of inhibition which intervenes for the incoherent information of a text, and a mechanism of suppression occurring for the irrelevant information. The inconsistent information seems to be inhibited at first, before definitively eliminated by the mental representation of the text. These two processes are necessary to the construction of a coherent model of situation of a text.
