Functional, symbolic and societal frames for automobility: Implications for sustainability transitionsSovacool, Benjamin K., Axsen, Jonn 10 November 2020 (has links)
Automobility refers to the continued, self-perpetuating dominance of privately-owned, gasoline-powered vehicles used primarily by single occupants—a system which clearly has broad environmental and societal impacts. Despite increasing societal interest in transitions to more sustainable transportation technologies, there has been little consideration of how such innovations might challenge, maintain or support different aspects of automobility, and what that means for technology deployment, transport policy, and user practices. To bring attention to the complexity and apparent durability of the automobility system, in this paper we develop a conceptual framework that explores automobility through a categorization of frames, or shared cultural meanings. This framework moves beyond the typical focus on private, functional considerations of user choice, financial costs and time use to also consider symbolic and societal frames of automobility that exist among users, non-users, industry, policymakers and other relevant social groups. We illustrate this framework with eight particular frames of automobility that fall into four broad categories: private-functional frames such as (1) cocooning and fortressing and (2) mobile digital offices; private-symbolic frames such as (3) gender identity and (4) social status; societal-functional frames such as (5) environmental stewardship and (6) suburbanization; and societal-symbolic frames such as (7) self-sufficiency and (8) innovativeness. Finally, we start the process of discussing several transportation innovations in light of these automobility frames, namely electrified, autonomous and shared mobility—examining early evidence for which frames would be challenged or supported by such transitions. We believe that appreciation of the complex and varied frames of automobility can enrich discussion of transitions and policy relating to sustainable transportation.

With the recent growth and wide availability of heterogeneous wireless access technologies, inter-vehicle communication systems are expected to culminate in integrating various wireless standards for the next generation of connected and autonomous vehicles. The role of 5G-enabled vehicular networks has become increasingly important, as current Internet clients and providers have urged robustness and effectiveness in digital services over wireless networks to cope with the latest advances in wireless mobile communication. However, to enable 5G wireless technologies' dense diversity, seamless and reliable wireless communication protocols need to be thoroughly investigated in vehicular networks. 5G-enabled vehicular networks applications and services such as routing, mobility management, and service discovery protocols can integrate mobility-based prediction techniques to elevate those applications' performance with various vehicles, applications, and network measurements.
In this thesis, we propose a novel suite of 5G-enabled smart mobility prediction and management schemes and design a roadmap guide to mobility-based predictions for intelligent vehicular network applications and protocols. We present a thorough review and classification of vehicular network architectures and components, in addition to mobility management schemes, benchmarks advantages, and drawbacks. Moreover, multiple mobility-based schemes are proposed, in which vehicles' mobility is managed through the utilization of machine learning prediction and probability analysis techniques. We propose a novel predictive mobility management protocol that incorporates a new networks' infrastructure discovery and selection scheme. Next, we design an efficient handover trigger scheme based on time-series prediction and a novel online neural network-based next roadside unit prediction protocol for smart vehicular networks. Then, we propose an original adaptive predictive location management technique that utilizes vehicle movement projections to estimate the link lifetime between vehicles and infrastructure units, followed by an efficient movement-based collision detection scheme and infrastructure units localization strategy.
Last but not least, the proposed techniques have been extensively evaluated and compared to several benchmark schemes with various networks' parameters and environments. Results showed the high potentials of empowering vehicular networks' mobility-based protocols with the vehicles' future projections and the prediction of the network's status.

The purpose of this thesis is to achieve an in-depth understanding of how the Vietnamese people in Poland are involved in mobility within air travel (aero-mobility) for their transnational endeavors. This qualitative study is based on 4 semi-structured face-to-face interviews, 3 text-based interviews with the Vietnamese people living in Poland (VP), and on content analysis of texts and images. Air travel can, surprisingly, play a significant role in migration and ethnic studies. The analysis of this thesis relies on the theoretical frameworks of mobility turn, and transnationalism, focusing on the experiences, customs, and habits of the Vietnamese of Poland engaged in air travel. The analysis also includes how air travel can strengthen the diasporic and transnational links of the Vietnamese of Poland, contributing to ethnic weddings, charity events, and religious activities, securing their cultural identity in Poland. The findings indicate that travel customs and habits, social networks, diasporic activities, movements of goods, and exchange of cultures and ideas can be generated by a combination of mobility, transnationalism, and air travel of the Vietnamese people in Poland.

The project is inspired by the idea of trying to simplify and create understanding on a broader level regarding the issues of climate change within the author’s field of design. How can design help us understand the relevance of acting now by visualizing how a potential future might look if action is not taken. Out of many issues that might arise due to climate change the project specifically targets that of desertification. The consequences global desertification already has on life and nature could potentially reach devastating levels in a not-so-distant future making it a highly important topic. Desertification if left uncontrolled is expected to force billions of people from the densest areas of the world onthe move by 2090. Driving densification of the last liveable land to reach unprecedented levels. This is a scenario that we want to stay clear of at all costs as it gambles our survival as a species on this planet. It would lead to the creation of vast unhabitable areas, potentially major conflicts, and large-scale segregation. Leaving little to no room for our ally nature to regenerate would mean the mass extinction of species and potentially life on our planet. To enforce the urgency of action taking the project steps into the distant future of 2086 to portray how a growing desert would have affected the way we live, the struggles it has brought, and how we are putting all efforts towards assisted regeneration of the planet. As much as the project is speculative the scenario builds from data and analytics mapped by scientists and research within the fields of eco- science. As the issue of desertification is an already existing problem today. Scientists and inventors are working on ways to counter its growth. Taking inspiration and learnings from biodiverse reforestation work done today and applying it to the potential scenario allowed the author to highlight issues in the current process. As the scenario was pushed to the extreme so were the problems within the current system. Scalability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility came up as some of the most prevalent issues. Mobility already plays a great role in distributing the efforts of today’s work and will come to play an even greater role in future reforestation efforts. With technological development and systematic changes come new possibilities for innovation. The process behind the development consisted of exploring solutions that hinder desertification whilst simultaneously promoting and assisting in the regeneration of nature. This involved research into large-scale reforestation development and up-and-coming technologies. Through creative development and ideation grew potential scenarios that resulted in story-driven final visuals. The result is Terra Nova. A lighter than air propelled cocnept that allows long term cargo- mobility in barren areas with minimal impact to the environment. The vehicle is multifunctional in the sense that it carries the capabilities of both personal and cargo transport making it a great all-around vehicle.

This study is an examination of factors present in the work process for sustainable transitioning of traffic systems in Linköping and Uppsala municipalities. Both from a technical and a behavioral point of view. This study uses a qualitative methodology to answer and examine this subject. Data has been collected with the use of interviews with urban planners from two municipalities and a document analysis of planning documents pertaining to traffic planning in these municipalities. Previous research within the topic has been gathered to strengthen the studies legitimacy and depth. The results of this study found that multiple factors influence the ability and effectiveness of the work municipalities towards a sustainable traffic transition. Such as political willpower, economical instruments for control and preexisting car infrastructure and culture. We have also found varied responses from municipalities regarding the usage of mobility management measures for traffic transition. / Denna studie undersöker faktorer som inom Linköpings och Uppsalas kommuners arbetsprocess för hållbar trafikomställning, både ur teknisk och beteendemässig synvinkel. Studien använder sig av en kvalitativ metod för att besvara frågeställningar och analyser ämnet. Data har samlats in genom intervjuer med stadsplanerare från två kommuner och en dokumentanalys av styrdokument som berör trafikplanering i dessa kommuner. Tidigare forskning inom ämnet har samlats in för att stärka studiens legitimitet och djup. Resultaten av denna studie visar att flera faktorer påverkar kommunernas förmåga och effektivitet att arbeta mot en hållbar trafikomställning. Såsom politisk vilja, ekonomiska styrmedel och befintlig bilinfrastruktur och kultur. Vi har också funnit varierande svar från kommuner angående användningen av mobility management åtgärder för trafikomställning.

The municipalities in Sweden must confront with constantly evolving challenges for a sustainable society. One of these challenges is the vital transportation system which enables the society to function properly. However, it is important to recognize that the transportation system itself presents various factors that require careful consideration. Fare-free public transport has properties that have the potential to address many of the problems the society are facing today. This study aims to examine the characteristics and advantages of the fare-free public transport system and assess its alignment with Umeå municipality's sustainability objectives in transportation and urban planning. To achieve this, a document study is conducted to identify Umeå municipality's sustainability goals, while a literature review is done to assess the impacts of implementing a fare-free public transport system. By combining the findings, the paper aims to provide insights into the research objective. The findings suggest that the viability of fare-free public transport depends on the extent to which planners and policymakers are willing to compromise on different dimensions of sustainability. Fare-free public transport can address the social dimension of sustainability goals in Umeå municipality but falls short in achieving the ecological and economical dimensions.

This study seeks to replicate and extend Roksa and Potter's (2011) analysis of the association between intergenerational family background and academic outcomes by utilizing the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to examine alternative methods for operationalizing maternal educational background. Results indicate a positive association between maternal upward mobility and adolescent academic achievement. Measures of mobility affect adolescent achievement even when controlling for both mother's and maternal grandmother's educational attainment. Future research should examine the differential impact of extreme mobility, specifically downward mobility, on adolescent academic outcomes.
