Empowering natives through autobiographical writing: Lee Maracles Bobbi Lee indian rebel and Leslie Marmon Silkos The turquoise ledge: a memoir / Empowering natives through autobiographical writing: Lee Maracles Bobbi Lee indian rebel and Leslie Marmon Silkos The turquoise ledge: a memoir

Juliana Almeida Salles 02 April 2014 (has links)
This dissertation brings to the fore two autobiographical works by Native women authors who first gained recognition in the 1970s: Bobbi Lee Indian Rebel (1975), by Native-Canadian Lee Maracle and The Turquoise Ledge: a Memoir (2010), by Native-American Leslie Marmon Silko. These womens undeniable importance to the Native American/Canadian Renaissance is clear, and each of these authors decided to contribute to Native literature using different strategies: while Maracle started her career with Bobbi Lee Indian Rebel, an autobiographical work, Silko waited over thirty years to publish her The Turquoise Ledge. The problematization of seeing either works strictly through Western or strictly through Native perspectives is also addressed here, along with the apparently inevitable political tone present in both narratives. Despite the fact that the two selected works have been written over three decades apart, questions such as: Can these works be considered literature?, Do they have as main purpose to highlight the authors personal accomplishments? or How do they work to empower the Native people? may never be answered, but they did incite the writing of this dissertation and guided our analysis

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marta Gerusa Soares da Silva.pdf: 1019521 bytes, checksum: dafe6a7ce15446dca593cbcc3e9179b2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-02-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of the association of „capim-de-raiz‟ (Chloris orthonoton Doell.) and „capim-milhã‟ [Brachiaria plantaginea (Link.) Hitchc.], concerning growth, persistence and production, as well to morphanatomically characterize the legume „orelha de onça‟ (Macroptilium martii Benth.). In order to evaluate the dynamics of the association „capim-de-raiz‟ and „capim-milhã‟, two experiments were carried out: I. Evaluation of deferred native pasture concerning botanical composition and forage mass; II. Growth dynamics of „capim-milhã‟ and „capim-de-raiz‟. Experiment I was conducted at the Experimental Station of IPA, in São Bento do Una - PE from 2007 to 2008 with different evaluation periods for forage mass and botanical composition. Experiment II was conducted at a greenhouse in the Animal Science Department - UFRPE, from 09.26.06 to 07.26.07. Soil blocks with the plant community were taken from native pasture area of the Experimental Station of Instituto Agronômico de Pernambuco - IPA, in São Bento do Una - PE, and placed in plastic pots remaining at a greenhouse in UFRPE. Pots were submitted to four irrigation schedules: Irrigation I - irrigation at the beginning of the experiment; Irrigation II - started two months after Irrigation I; Irrigation III - started four months after irrigation I and Irrigation IV - started six months after irrigation I. After the initial irrigation of each period, all pots were irrigated every seven days until drainage and regrowth number, seedling number, plant number and inflorescence number were evaluated. Morphanatomical characterization of „orelha de onça‟ leaf was analyzed with optical microscopy in cross-sections confectioned laminae. 10 families, 15 genera and 18 species were identified in the deferred pasture. In botanical composition from May to August 2007, „capim-milhã‟ was the main component from 60 to 90 days with 46.75 and 52.09%, respectively. In August 2007, other species participated with 57.75% of the botanical composition; at the end of evaluation in year 2008 other species occupied 100% of the composition. The highest forage mass (kg DM/ha) for „capim-milhã‟ (2.736) occurred at 90 days, for other species (3.141) and „capim-de-raiz‟ (2.701) at 120 days. In soil blocks it was observed that regrowth occurred only after 30 days of assessment for initial irrigation and the highest number of seedlings to the pots occurred at 30 days. It was observed at 60 days the largest number of grasses for irrigation III and at 90 days for irrigation IV, and that most of inflorescence appeared at 90 days. In deferred area the use of stockpiled forage should preferably take place from 60 to 90 days. The main form of establishment of „capim-de-raiz‟ was by germination and at 150 days it was observed population growth of other species. It was observed paracytic and amphistomatic stomata, simple and uniseriate hairs, palisade and spongy chlorophyll parenchyma in „orelha de onça‟ leaf blade. In stem vascular system it was observed a range of libero-ligneous beams in the internodes area, separating cortex of medulla. Foliar and stem anatomical characteristics are common to legumes. Dinâmica do crescimento do capim-milhã e capim-de-raiz.

Prestanda av användargränssnitt i cross-platform-appar / Performance of user interface in cross-platform apps

Lygnebrandt, Emil, Holm, Jonathan January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine differences in delay during calculation and presentation of interfaces executing on different techniques. Specifically between native developed apps and generated apps. Since the work aims to contribute with information regarding performance, an experimental method was considered to be the best choice. Measurements of loading times was made with a video camera that captured the execution of the experiments which made the method simple and captures what the users would have experienced. Demarcation to the platforms Android and iOS was made and Xamarin was chosen as the framework for creating generated apps. Data from experiment that examined loading times, experiment with users that dealt with the responsiveness of lists and the analysis of CPU and memory usage indicate a recurring pattern. Xamarin Forms with XAML is the technique that has performed worst during the experiments, followed by Xamarin Forms. Xamarin Android/iOS didn’t have as big performance loss. Xamarin Forms does not manage the phones resources as efficient as Xamarin Android/iOS and native developed apps does. The results from this study can be used as material for making decisions witin organisations when choosing technology for creating apps. The study also contribute with data that can be used by other researchers.

Proficiency, language use and the debate over nativeness : A sociolinguistic survey of South Delhi English

Domange, Raphaël January 2011 (has links)
This study examines the extent of the impact of proficiency and language use on sociophonetic variation in Indian English (IE). It is based on an oral corpus using the methods and tools of the PAC project and derived from a pool of South Delhi-based highly proficient speakers. The investigation was conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods and focused on two understudied variables: (1) the fricative realisation of th, and (2) the realisations of the vowels in words of the NORTH and FORCE lexical sets. First, the results demonstrate that a significant amount of variation which cannot be accounted for by the traditional age, gender and social class factors can be explained by the language use parameter. A degree of correlation was found between the volume of use of English in a range of domains, and how speakers take advantage of the sociolinguistic potential of prestigious forms. This offers indications on the location of the leaders of the linguistic change. The second central feature of this study is derived from the investigation of the NORTH versus FORCE distinction. It is argued that the general maintenance of this distinction in IE provides evidence for the endo-normative nature of this variety. In the light of these findings, issues ultimately relating to the debate over nativeness are discussed.

Effects of conventionality and proficiency in metaphor processing : A response time study

Eriksson, Peter January 2013 (has links)
Some researchers that work with metaphor theory claim that metaphors and figurative language are understood and processed just as easily as literal language. However, as this thesis will explore in detail, other research indicates that such is not always the case. That is, if the category of metaphor is further subcategorized into conventional and non-conventional metaphor, the scope will change because of the fact that it is possible to argue that non-conventionalized metaphors require a more conscious path of processing. In order to explain this alternative path, there are two primary approaches to language processing worth introducing: implicit and explicit. These approaches vary in required attention and speed of processing. With regards to conscious effort, these approaches are rather similar to the way in which we process conventionalized and non-conventionalized metaphors. Conventional metaphors are processed more quickly and easily than non-conventional ones. Hence, the claim that all metaphors are similarly processed may not always be true. Furthermore, an individual’s level of proficiency presumably correlates with speed in language processing. However, if non-conventional metaphor requires a more deliberate path of processing, this thesis assumes that the processing of this type of metaphor will be relatively unaffected by proficiency level, thus causing informants to process them in similar manners. In this thesis, 24 non-native speakers (NNS), categorized into intermediate proficient and advanced proficient, and seven native speakers (NS) were tested with an RT-test on subjective metaphor comprehension. Results were compared using mean response times and standard deviations, as well as looking at correlations and coefficient of variation. The results showed a distinct difference in processing speed with conventional metaphors being processed significantly faster. Moreover, the findings indicate that conventional metaphor processing speed seems to be predicted by proficiency, whilst non-conventional processing speed is not. The RT differences remained relatively consistent in both conventional and non-conventional metaphor processing, but when taking correlations, variance and coefficient of variation into consideration, the findings indicate that these other factors help level out the differences in non-conventional metaphor processing in more subtle ways than simply by RT’s.

Nouvelles méthodologies en spectrométrie de masse native et mobilité ionique pour la caractérisation structurale de macrobiomolécules et de leurs complexes associés / Novel methodologies in native mass spectrometry and ion mobility for structural characterization of macrobiomolecules and their related complexes

Stojko, Johann 11 March 2016 (has links)
This PhD thesis aims at developing methods in native mass spectrometry (MS) combined with ion mobility (IM-MS) to characterize protein-ligand complexes and large protein assemblies. Fine-tuning of instrumental settings allowed expanding the scope of these approaches in structural biology. Real-time monitoring of protein-ligand complexes by native MS and IM-MS enabled to screen their binding properties while depicting subtle conformational changes induced upon binding. Applying these methods to refractory multi-protein complexes provided insights about their topology, making structural modeling easier. Finally, benefits from high-resolution native MS were highlighted through the characterization of heterogeneous systems, including monoclonal antibodies and their drug conjugates. Here, these developments enable to push some technical limits one step forward, increasing the potential of native MS and IM-MS both in academic research and pharmaceutical industry.

Hydrogen/deuterium exchange coupled to mass spectrometry in structural proteomics

Terral, Guillaume 08 July 2016 (has links)
This thesis work focuses on development of structural mass spectrometry methods for the analysis of recombinant proteins and their associated complex. The central objective has focused on the development of hydrogen/deuterium exchange coupled to mass spectrometry approaches (HDX-MS). The high resolution biophysical techniques for structural characterization such as crystallography or NMR regularly face problems of crystal productions, size analyzable complex or quantity of material required. The development of specific HDX-MS methods allowed the characterization of various, and refractory protein systems to high resolution approaches. The combination of this approach with complementary structural MS tools is also illustrated, and shows its interest to obtain increased resolution information.

GERMINAÇÃO DE SEMENTES E DESENVOLVIMENTO DE PLÂNTULAS EM Paspalum notatum Flügge / SEED GERMINATING AND SEEDLING DEVELOPMENT Paspalum notatum Flügge

Aguiar, Anderson Rossi de 11 March 2014 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / Paspalum notatum, native grass biome Pampa, Rio Grande do Sul, has high forage value, but has difficulty germinating seeds with low viability. Inserted in this context are the promoters of germination and biomass, biostimulants stimulate® and bioagent Trichoderma spp. by mechanisms that influence the metabolism of action of the species. The present study investigated the promotion of seed germination and development of P. notatum. Through the Allium cepa test in ten treatments (four replicates per treatment), eight with metabolites of Trichoderma spp. and two controls in the absence of metabolites were selected isolates of trichoderma biological agent. The test of sanity, the identification of fungi associated with seeds used the methods of filter paper and plating on solid agar PDA (potato dextrose agar). With the in vitro technique of direct confrontation of the antagonist action on three fungal contaminants of highest incidence was observed. In a preliminary test, pre-treatment is selected to germination of P. notatum. Seed germination in greenhouse consisted of 16 treatments with four replicates, the control treatments, the three isolates, the stimulate®, the combination of each of the three isolates stimulate®, all with and without pretreatment, analysis of the data was through the Genes program. For reviews of morphogenesis, four were randomly chosen tillers per treatment, they monitored for the appearance and elongation and leaf senescence. This monitoring was performed two times per week. The top three trichoderma isolates selected in test A. cepa strain were 2B2, C1, 2B12. The removal of the seed coat structures of P. notatum was the pre-treatment showed the best performance with 34.5% twinned seeds. In the test of sanity the fungal genera Aspergillus, Curvularia, and Fusarium Geniculosporium were identified, isolated and 2B2 of Trichoderma spp. efficient for direct to these fungal genera confrontation. For the IVE (index emergency speed), the combination treatments of biological powder 2B12 isolated from trichoderma and biostimulating Stimulate® and only Stimulate® biostimulating with pretreatment and without pretreatment combination of biological powder isolated 2B2 Trichoderma with biostimulating Stimulate®, achieved the best results, with 14.48, 13.93 and 12.75, respectively. The biostimulating stimulate® promotes the rate of speed of emergence of seeds of P. notatum and the production of dry matter, the initial rate of elongation of the sheet (TAIF) positively interfere in the dry weight of shoots.

Traces of forced labour – a history of black civilians in British concentration camps during the South African War, 1899-1902

Benneyworth, Garth Conan January 2016 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / During the South African War of 1899-1902 captured civilians were directed by the British army into military controlled zones and into refugee camps which became known as concentration camps. Established near towns, mines and railway sidings these camps were separated along racial lines. The British forced black men, women and children through the violence of war into agricultural and military labour as a war resource, interning over 110,000 black civilians in concentration camps. Unlike Boer civilians who were not compelled to labour, the British forced black civilians into military labour through a policy of no work no food. According to recent scholarly work based only on the written archive, at least 20,000 black civilians died in these camps. This project uses these written archives together with archaeological surveys, excavations, and oral histories to uncover a history of seven such forced labour camps. This approach demonstrates that in constructing an understanding and a history of what happened in the forced labour camps, the written archive alone is limited. Through the work of archaeology which uncovers material evidence on the terrain and the remains of graves one can begin to envisage the scale an extent of the violence that characterized the experience of forced laborers in the 'black concentration camps' in the South African War.

Narratively performed role identities of visible ethnic minority, native English speaking teachers in TESOL

Javier, Eljee January 2015 (has links)
The binary distinction of “native speaker” and “non-native speaker” (NS/NNS) remains the primary way in which professionals are categorised in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). This distinction is problematic because it is used to place greater value on native English speaking teachers (NEST) over non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs). This distinction is argued to be largely based on linguistic features (Medgyes 1992; Cook 1999). However the aspect of race remains to be adequately discussed (Kubota and Lin 2006).This thesis has its origins in my personal experiences with racism because, as a Canadian- Filipino, my employer and my students did not accept me as a “real” NEST because I am “non-white”. In my initial research, during my MA TESOL, into the professional experiences of racism I coined the acronym “VEM-NEST”: visible ethnic minority, native English speaking teacher. I used this term to describe the particular group of teachers, to which I belong, who do not easily fit into the available categories of NS/NNS, and consequently NEST/NNEST.My thesis reported on the experiences of nine VEM-NESTs and how they performed specific identities during specific events. Their experiences were presented as individual restoried narratives which were developed from the combination of the participants’ written stories and one-to-one interviews. The restoried narratives were analysed using an analytical lens based on Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) structural approach. The findings suggest that VEM-NESTs need to meet a certain amount of “native speaker” norms in order to be given the opportunity to perform their VEM-NEST role identities in specific situations. This has particular implications for how the NS/NNS binary distinction needs a more nuanced understanding as a way of addressing the inequalities embedded in the way TESOL professionals are valued.
