Lagom: Intersects of nationalism and populism in Swedish parliamentary elections

Ferguson, Vernon Neil 05 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the unique set of circumstances which led to the rapid rise of a supposed right-wing populist party in Sweden. The Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden Democrats) are not the first nationalist party to enter the Swedish parliament, but are the first to survive multiple parliamentary elections and are currently the third largest party in parliament. This thesis argues the Sverigedemokraterna do not constitute a political party, but remain a populist movement within Swedish politics, are not right-wing but rather a lagom-inspired hybrid, and the stabilizing effects of the culture of lagom prevents the permanence of extremism in Swedish politics. The increase in immigrants from predominantly Muslim states due to the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war stoke the anti-Islamic rhetoric of this nationalist group, but did not cause their rapid ascent and neither did the entry of Sweden into the European Economic Community. The Sverigedemokraterna are a single-point culmination of a century of nationalist and fascist groups splitting and merging within Sweden, but as other groups continue to appear the SD cannot be the only culmination. / Master of Arts

European Migration and the Far-right: 2011-2017

Wilson, Lauren 01 January 2019 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between the current migration crisis in Europe and the escalation of far-right voting which has been witnessed since it's beginning. In order to do so this study utilized correlation experiments and detailed case studies to explore the relationship between legislative vote shares and asylum applications for the years 2009-2017 in the EU member states of Hungary, Germany, France, Greece and the UK. Control variables of GDP, unemployment and terrorist attacks have also been utilized to measure alternative causes of far-right voting. Results of these experiments vary quite a bit from state to state - finding differing potential causal factors in each case study. Germany, France and the UK show results which indicate that an increase in asylum applications potentially influence far-right voting habits. Greece does not show this type of result, but does show correlation with control variables. Hungarian experiments however do not produce correlation with any variables tested, but has the strongest presence of far-right activity which may indicate that Hungarian far-right success is attributed to their long history of far-right activity.

Nativism and the decline in civil liberties: reactions of white America toward the Japanese immigrants, 1885-1945

O'Neal, Jonathon P. January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis concentrates on how nativism, through a series of discriminatory policies over the span of fifty years, influenced the creation of the Japanese American internment camps during the Second World War. By using the experiences of the first—and second—generations of Japanese immigrants, my thesis explores how nativism supported the creation of laws meant to preserve racial homogeneity, cultural superiority, economic segregation, and national security from the Japanese immigrants living in California during the end of the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century

The “True American”: William H. Christy and the Rise of the Louisiana Nativist Movement, 1835-1855

Todd, Brett R 13 May 2016 (has links)
In New Orleans during the 1830s, Irish immigration became a source of tension between newly settled Anglo-American elites and the long-established Creole hegemony. Out of this tension, in 1835 Anglo-American elites established the Louisiana Native American Association (LNAA) to block Irish immigrants from gaining citizenship and, ultimately, the right to vote. The Whig Party, whom most Louisiana Anglo-Americans supported, promoted nativism to prevent naturalized Irish from voting Democrat, the preferred party of the Creoles. This study will argue that the LNAA, under the leadership of William H. Christy, was not merely a reaction to increased Irish immigration, but was also a strategy used by the Louisiana Whig Party to gain dominion over state politics. In the end, this strategy did more harm than good to the Whigs as the nativist movement led to a fatal split within the party.

As políticas de imigração dos Estados Unidos: Entre o ativismo restricionista e o paradigma de enforcement imigratório contemporâneo / Immigration politics from United States: between restrictionist activism the migratory enforcement paradigm contemporary

Amaral Junior, Wellington Gontijo do 24 February 2011 (has links)
This research intends to analyze the dynamics that probably promoted the securitization of immigration in the United States after 2001. In order to accomplish this objective, are analyzed the changes in formulation, orientation and conduction of the immigration politics in the United States through the study of the immigration law and enforcement, focusing on the role of restrictionist groups in the development of that politics. We will try to demonstrate that the treatment of immigration as a security issue in the post-September 11 era must be comprehended into a broader process and that it recovers the restrictionist activisms role especially, the nativism of promoting hostile contents about immigrant. Therefore, the post-September context is both a product of a trajectory of demonization of the immigrant that can be identified since the ninetieth century and the consolidation of the immigration control escalate that was in progress since the late 1980s. Finally, the analysis employs the Copenhagen Schools securitization concept in order to test the basic hypothesis of this dissertation and to contribute for the making up of immigration politics outside the logic based on security aspects of immigration

Larruscain, Edilacir dos Santos 30 March 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents discursive practices that produce the Countryman Musical Subject, a type of subjectivity of gauchismo of Rio Grande do Sul, which circulates in the Student Nativist Song Branch, a music festival which has been gathering, since 2002, at Liberato Salzano Vieira da Cunha Public School, in Santana do Livramento-RS, hundreds of students from Basic Education up to universities from that city and neighboring towns. The work is an ethnographic study and is linked to the Line of Research and Education and Arts-LP4 and to the research group DEC-Difference, Education and Culture, of the Post-Graduation Program in Education of the Federal University of Santa Maria. The Branch is considered, in this study, as a cultural teaching instance, where subjects immersed in relations of powerknowledge, based on Nativist Gaucho culture. Taking into consideration the approach from the Cultural Studies in Education, which understands culture as a set of significant systems that generate knowledge and constitute subjectivities, it is analyzed the circulation of narratives that spell out the production of the Countryman Musical Subject, a kind of subjectivity aligned to the musical practices of nativist discourses, embedded in the overall production and consumption of cultural goods. In the text, there is a description of markers of gaucho culture that produce Countryman Musical Subject, and from the narratives of Music workshops as well as teachers and students of the organizing committee of the festival. It is analyzed the experience of production of subjectivities of students and teachers participating in Nativist Song Branch.

This work was initially devoted to a painting and a sculpture, they both named Moema, the former completed in 1866, by Victor Meirelles, and the latter in 1895, by Rodolpho Bernardelli. But it was expanded to understand the character since her creation, in 1781, by Caramuru, an epic poem, until the 20th century beginning. A Native woman, Moema became a Brazilian symbol. Meireles' painting has a special role in that transformation. Moema's naked dead body was an adjustment, concerning to a country that, in the 19th century, took the allegorical image of the Indian as a national symbol. Bernardelli molded a much more provocative Moema. In his bronze, she became more disturbing, taking part of the fin de siècle delight and morbid feelings. Beyond they both, Moema inspired several authors, important to consolidate the character. But Meireles' Moema is the brighter version, a powerful comment of its time, disregarded even in our days / Doutorado / Historia da Arte / Doutor em História
