The Effect of Touch on Interpersonal Attraction of Selected Patients in an Initial Interview Held in a Neuropsychiatric Setting

Spinn, Richard 08 1900 (has links)
This study was designed to determine the effect of touch on the interpersonal attraction between therapist and patient. Four instruments were used to measure the effect, those measurements included "Client's Personal Reaction Questionnaire," "Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy and Psychotherapists Scale," actual physical distance and actual timed verbal measure. The general nature of the research hypotheses stated that the touch technique would increase the interpersonal attraction of the patients toward the therapist as indicated by the four measures. The results of the study led to the conclusion that touch during a single interview session effects statistically significant change in interpersonal attraction when measured by actual physical distance. However change in interpersonal attraction was not found when measured by the "Client's Personal Reaction Questionnaire," "Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy and Psychotherapists Scale" and an actual timed verbal measure. Implications of the study, based on observations of the experimenter, were that touch is successful in helping hospitalized neuropsychiatric patients increase their interpersonal attraction and that this attraction cannot always be measured by global questionnaires and specific amounts of verbalization. A similar study should be replicated with subjects other than neuropsychiatric patients, such as hospitalized medical patients, college students and children.

Évaluation et prise en charge des troubles émotionnels par le biais des nouvelles technologies / New technologies to assess and take care emotional disorders

Gros, Auriane 04 December 2017 (has links)
Emotions and new technologies often sound as an impossible association. However, in recent years, new Information and Communication Technologies (nICT) such as wearable sensors and software for activity recognition have enabled to assess emotions more accurately. This dissertation aimed at developing and testing various nICT-based tools allowing a better assessment and management of emotions, either at the behavioral, physiological or cognitive level. I started with a literature review of the existing nICT for the assessment and management of emotional disorders. I then gathered recommendations for the use of nICT from experts in the field, as well from interns in psychiatry and general practitioners (Study 1). Next, I developed a computerized test to assess impairments in emotional experience and emotion regulation at the physiological and cognitive level (Study 2). Study 3 consisted in developing a tool to manage emotional disorders at the physiological and cognitive level by means of a multisensory, virtual immersion, and assessing the effects of this immersion on the verbal ability of patients with and without cognitive impairment. Finally, in Study 4 I developed an automated platform for the assessment and management of emotional disorders at the behavioral level. In this context, I developed and evaluated the interest of employing activity recognition algorithms for the detection of behavioral emotional disorders, and I evaluated the effects of nonpharmacological solutions based on aromatherapy, music therapy and serious games for the management of these disorders.

Vi ser bara funktion, inga hinder : En kvalitativ studie om möjligheter och hinder som existerar för personer med NPF att etablera sig på arbetsmarknaden i en medelstor kommun i Sverige / “We only see ability, not disability” : A qualitative study on opportunities and obstacles that exist for people with neuropsychiatric disabilities to establish themselves in the labor market within a medium-sized municipality in Sweden

Rova, Matilda, Svensson, Jonathan January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis in sociology was to understand the situation on the labor market for people with a neuropsychiatric disability (NPD) with the question: “How can one understand, based on the views of a group of formal actors (officials responsible for establishing people in society and in the labor market), what opportunities and obstacles exist for people with an NPD to establish themselves in the labor market in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden?”. The objective is thus to shed light on the situation, as previous research shows vulnerability of disabled people; both in school and on the labor market. The thesis is based on a study with hermeneutic methodology of qualitative character, consisting of semi-structured interviews with eight people whom have work-related experience with people with NPD and whom work for organisations that makes it possible for people to establish themselves in society and in the labor market. The theories used in the thesis are: Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's theory of social constructions, Hartmut Rosa's theory of acceleration and Jan Inge Jönhill's theory of inclusion and exclusion. The results show that the reasons to why people with NPD become excluded from the labor market mainly originates from employers' attitudes and lack of knowledge about neuropsychiatric diagnoses. There is a generalized perception of the diagnosis function, which can be problematic, since the diagnoses vary from person to person. We refer to this phenomenon as generalizing competence blindness.

Läsförståelse i grundsärskolan : en studie utifrån pedagogers perspektiv / Reading comprehension in compulsory special school : a study from the perspective of educators

Nilsson, Beng-Elof, Petersson, Emma January 2021 (has links)
The study describes educators´ perceptions of reading comprehension for students with intellectual disabilities and neuropsychiatric disabilities in compulsory special school grades 7–9 for students who read the subject Swedish. The study also sheds light on the strategies educators´ use to make texts comprehensible and provide support in reading comprehension. Based on the educators´ descriptions, the opportunities and challenges the educators face are highlighted.    The study is based on eight qualitative semi-structured interviews with educators active in upper secondary school. All informants teach the subject Swedish. The theoretical framework for the study consists of the socio-cultural perspective and a cognitive science perspective. The result is analyzed on the basis of concepts taken from the two theoretical starting points.   Based on the educators' descriptions, it appears that reading comprehension teaching takes place as a group activity, couple activity but also as an individual work. The educators attach great importance to getting the students involved in conversations to guide the students through the text. In teaching, the educators work to create a background knowledge of the text and to explain words and concepts. The strategies described are based on the educators modeling and thinking aloud about how the student can find answers in a text and make inferences. A large part of the teaching is based on finding texts and working methods that motivate and make the text comprehensible. In their work, the educators use creative methods with theatrical working methods and a personal commitment to get students' attention and create motivation. An important basis is to get to know the student, starting from a survey of the student's level and then find adapted material. The results also show that a large part of the student group has difficulty with decoding and language / listening comprehension, which are important factors for reading comprehension.   The study shows that reading comprehension is not only a cognitive ability, but motivation and how one sees oneself as a reader is of crucial importance.   The study's special pedagogical relevance shows that educators need to be active in text conversations and strategies to engage students in reading comprehension teaching.

Digitaliseringens påverkan på historieundervisningenför NPF elever / How digitization has affected history teaching for students withneuropsychiatric disabilities

Granzén, Anton, Glemme, Viggo January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to investigate how the school’s digitization has affected history teaching for students with neuropsychiatric disabilities. In order to fulfill the purpose, the following question has been formulated: “What consequences does the school’s digitization generate for students with neuropsychiatric disabilities within the frame of history teaching?” The method for this work is based on systematic literature research through three databases, SwePub, Google Scholar and ERIC. These three databases were used to produce articles to further strengthen our question. The searches were done in both Swedish and English to get the largest possible selection of items. The results show that the school’s digitization has a positive impact on students with various neuropsychiatric disabilities but also all students. However, there are a limited number of studies that show the positive effects on NPF students. But based on the research found, it can be stated that digital tools play a crucial role in the child developing knowledge in order to achieve the goals in their education.

”VI VILL INTE HA SJUKVÅRD, ISTÄLLET VILL VI HA FRISKVÅRD”

Nilsson, Madeleine, Torgeman, Daniela January 2019 (has links)
An exceeding amount of families today are affected by neuropsychiatric disabilities. Previous research shows that many parents of children with neuropsychiatric disabilities experience a high stress level in everyday life due to the diagnosis / diagnoses. This can result in that parents develop conditions such as depression, chronic fatigue syndrome and similar problems. The authors of this study had an interest to look further into the important role the family has in creating a high quality of life for individuals with disability. The aim of this study was to investigate non- profit associate representatives experience of the support available from the public sector to the members of their organization. Since the authors have chosen to interview non-profit associate representatives, it has been possible to achieve a broad knowledge of the subject as the associations target people with disabilities and their relatives. The purpose of this study was also to raise questions concerning if a holistic approach is applied in interventions aimed at individuals with disability and their families. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Goffmans stigma theory as well as Hochschild's theory on emotional work.

The Role of PTP1B in Anxiety-Related Behaviours in hAPP-J20 and PS19 Mouse Models of Alzheimer’s Disease

Sharmin, Fariba 06 January 2022 (has links)
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder amongst older adults. Features of this disease include accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tau tangles (NFT), neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. These result in a progressive decline in memory and executive function in patients. Anxiety-related behaviours are disparaging comorbidities of AD, but how they arise in patients remains elusive. Protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) has been associated with Aβ pathology and with anxiety in separate paradigms, but whether PTP1B is involved in anxiety-related behaviours in AD mouse models is unknown. The objective of this project was to compare anxiety-related behaviours between the hAPP-J20 (Aβ pathology) and PS19 (Tau pathology) mouse models of AD and determine whether PTP1B is involved in these behaviours. Another major objective of this project was to investigate the role of PTP1B in tau pathology in the PS19 mouse model in anxiety-related brain regions, since this has not been previously examined. Using key anxiety-testing paradigms such as the elevated plus maze (EPM) and the open field test (OF), an age-based dimorphism in the onset of an inappropriately lowered anxiety response in the J20 and PS19 mouse models was identified. Furthermore, it was shown that this abnormal anti-anxiety baseline phenotype could be normalized with selective PTP1B inhibition by the drug trodusquemine and by genetic neuronal ablation. Finally, in PS19 mice at 8 months of age, it was shown that PTP1B blockade has the therapeutic effect of relieving neurotoxic phospho-tau burden and neuroinflammation. Together, these findings suggest that unleashed PTP1B may serve as a potential therapeutic target, with a possible role in AD-associated anxiety-related behaviours and AD pathology.
