Manufacturing audiences?: policy and practice in ABC radio news 1983-1993

Dunn, Anne, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This thesis sheds light on the ways in which audiences are made through the relationships between organisational policy and news production practice. It explores the relationships between news practitioners perceptions and definitions of audiences, production, and organisational policies, using the radio news service of the Australian national public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In so doing, the thesis demonstrates that production, in its institutional context, is a crucial site for the creation of audiences in the study of news journalism. In the process, it illuminates the role of public service broadcasting, in a world of digital media The conceptual framework utilises a new approach to framing analysis. Framing has been used to examine the news "agenda" and to identify the salient aspects of news events. This thesis demonstrates ways in which framing can be used to research important processes in news production at different levels, from policy level to that of professional culture, and generate insights to the relationship between them. The accumulated evidence of the bulletin analysis - using structural and rhetorical frames of news - field observation and interviews, shows that a specific and coherent audience can be constructed as a result of newsroom work practices in combination with organisational policies. The thesis has increased knowledge and understanding both of how news workers create images of their audiences and what the institutional factors are that influence the manufacture of audiences as they appear in the text of news bulletins.

Telejornalismo popular e sensacionalismo no programa Balanço Geral

Fonseca, Vicente Fernandes Dutra January 2010 (has links)
For the first time in decades, RBS TV has been challenged in its ratings in Rio Grande do Sul. Although it still maintains the leadership, it has been threatened by the gradual growth of Record TV ever since it began broadcasting in the state in July of 2007. Record TV has been fighting for audience through a popular program style which also reflected in its local TV news programs. This dissertation involves the analysis of “Balanço Geral”, the main popular show of the channel, attempting to understand the reasons for its good ratings which sometimes reaches levels that are above the hegemonic TV channel, something uncommon in the past four decades. The program is assessed through the analysis of four editions and takes into account data such as the sources used, the urban imagery represented in the show, the sites where the news takes place and the comments made by its host Alexandre Mota, an icon of its new style, before and after the presentation of the journalistic content, in order to understand how he approaches and connects with his audience – mainly the lower classes of the state capital and nearby communities.

Os limites do jornalismo : a última batalha do Jornal de Londrina /

Silveira, Fábio Alves January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the news values adopted by Jornal de Londrina to deal with urban issues in the city of Londrina, such as land use and occupation, the environmental issue and its relations with the construction industry and the real estate sector. The clipping used was the last three years of operation of the newspaper, which circulated between July 1989 and December 2015. This clipping allowed the selection of 121 reports, divided into eight themes that are related to this newspaper's agenda. Of these, two themes were chosen to be analyzed in the light of the news values, as they are more conflicting situations and deal with legal deviations and relevance, referring to two of the most important news values that appear since the first academic studies on the subject. journalism. The debate on news values was made based on a discussion proposed by five authors: Gisele Silva, Marcos Paulo da Silva, Pamela Shoemaker, Mauro Wolf and Nelson Traquina. These authors were chosen because their reflections point to a model of operational news values and easy to apply to the daily practice of newsrooms. / Doutor

An investigation into the patterns of news media consumption among South African youth

Maphiri, Fulufhelo Oscar January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Media Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / For years traditional and digital media have played an essential role of disseminating news and information to keep their target audience always updated about what is happening nationally and internationally. News consumption has globally been experiencing enormous deviations due to advancements in technology. In this context, the study examined and analysed news consumption patterns among the rural youth living in Limpopo Province South Africa. The study employed a sequential mixed research method. A self-administered questionnaire and semi-structured personal interview were used to collect data from youth aged between 18-34 years. A sample of 320 youth participated in the study, with 300 in quantitative and 20 in qualitative methods of research used to gather data for the study. Youth participants were randomly selected using convenience non-probability sampling. The data collected through a questionnaire were analysed using the Statistical Programme for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, inferential and descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were thematically analysed and interpreted considering diverse themes, sub-themes and common statements. The study results revealed that most youth highly preferred to access and consume news through online media more than television and newspapers because digital media are cheap, easily accessible and affordable. The findings further indicated that most youth highly preferred to consume news through television channels such as ETV because it is a credible and reliable source of news. It is highlighted in the results that most youth preferred to consume entertainment news more than business, political and sport news because they find the former interesting and relaxing. Also, most youth did prefer to discuss entertainment news with family members and friends and that there are positive relationships between media credibility and news consumption which tend to influence family and friends’ news discussions. In a nutshell, the findings of this study further suggest a philosophical change in news consumption patterns among South African youth and the operation of media industries. However, the study recommends that most media houses need to broadcast and publish business and political news that are more relevant, accurate and objective for most youth to consume proficiently. Keywords: News media consumption, news discourse, youth, media credibility, new and traditional media.

A General Framework for Interactive Television News

Sellers, Benjamin Bart 13 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
We design a complete interactive television news system. We develop a news production system that allows for the creation of flexible, content-rich interactive news. This system embraces a general creation process to interactive news that is built on top of a newscast model that evolves from and conforms with the current production newscast model. It allows for content sharing and content reuse. We also create an interactive news viewing system that adapts well to a living room environment. It contains several interactive features designed to give the viewer control and allow them to watch the news when, where, and how they want to. We perform a formative evaluation through a user study and interviews. Our results show that the production system allows fast, quality construction of interactive news. Viewers enjoy the interactivity and control the viewing system provides, but more work needs to be done to improve ease of use. Our system increases extra content visibility and usage over previous studies through additional features, more content, and direct invites to viewers. We also produce and deliver the news over an entire two-week period to a large number of viewers, making it the largest study done according to our knowledge.
