An Analysis of Two Major Global News Channels’ Twitter Feeds : The British Broadcasting Corporation and Al Jazeera English

Cook, William January 2013 (has links)
Twitter is an online social networking service which functions as an information sharing medium, hence it is perfect for media to convey pieces of news. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Al Jazeera English (AJE) are two international news channels that actively use Twitter to share their news stories. Previous investigations have found that depending on the news story, the BBC and AJE convey their pieces of news slightly differently. This study aims to give an analysis of the textual content in these two news channel’s text messages (tweets) on Twitter to see if there are linguistic variations. The tweets were analysed in terms of tone, word choice and information richness. Tweets where the words Syria and kill occurred were chosen for a more thorough analysis, and the results show that the BBC had a slightly more negative tone, provided more detailed news reports and used a more informative language than AJE. It might be that the findings were a result of chance considering the fact that the collection of tweets analysed was rather small and differed in size. Nevertheless, the differences that were revealed by the study were of an apparent nature and occurred too frequently and consistently in this small material to be discarded as merely incidental.

Who gets to talk about Sweden? : An analysis of PBS Newshour, FOX News and CNN’s choice of news sources in news features about Sweden.

Landt, Erika January 2019 (has links)
This essay examines which news sources gets to talk about Sweden in American news features about events in Sweden and if they give a positive or negative image of Sweden. I opted to examine three of the main news channels in the USA: PBS, FOX and CNN.  I examined, more specifically, the sources gender, nationality and ethnicity, and which social position and status they had. Furthermore I also examined whether the sources were verbal or non-verbal and if they were visible or anonymous. Lastly I did an analysis of whether the sources gave a positive or negative image of Sweden in the news features. To execute the study I used the quantitative content analysis as my method.   The results of the study show that the majority of the sources, used in American news features about events in Sweden, were Swedish professional males, who gave a negative image of Sweden. The majority of the sources were also visible and verbal. A small amount of the sources were anonymous, and PBS only used visible sources. The result did not differentiate much between the news channels, except when it came to if the sources were verbal or non-verbal. Every source used in PBS were verbal and the majority of the sources in FOX were verbal. In CNN’s news features, however, the majority of the news sources were non-verbal.

Död och plundring eller fredliga demonstrationer? : En innehållsanalys av hur CNN, MSNBC och Fox News gestaltade Black Lives Matter på Instagram. / Death and looting or peaceful demonstrations? : A content analysis of how CNN, MSNBC and Fox News constructed Black Lives Matter on Instagram.

Engvall, Elsa, Ness, Penellopé January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore how the Black Lives Matter movement was constructed on Instagram by American television channels the week after George Floyd was killed. The purpose was to answer the following questions; (1) What proportion of the posts were dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement during the chosen week? (2) How was George Floyd and Derek Chauvin portrayed on the media ́s Instagram? (3) What words and images were used to describe the Black Lives Matter movement? (4) What similarities and differences can be found between the channels ́ portrayals of the Black Lives Matter movement? The approach chosen was a multi-method research, thus using a both qualitative and quantitative design. Based on this method 112 Instagram posts uploaded between May 27th and June 2nd, 2020 were analyzed. CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are the largest news channels in the United States and therefore chosen for this study. Our study concluded that the overall presentation of the Black Lives Matter movement was positive, in terms of the total reporting from all three channels. Observing the channels separately, CNN and MSNBC mostly portrayed it positively, while Fox News mostly negatively. According to our analysis, the reason why the posts could be perceived in this way was based on the words used and images displayed. The words death, looter, and violence provided a negative understanding of the situation. Whereas the words such as loving, solidarity and freedom created a positive appearance. Overall the study found that the proportion of reporting on Black Lives Matter was vast in comparison to other news stories on all three channels. However, one of the substantial differences between them was the portrayal of the offender Derek Chauvin and the victim George Floyd.

The International News Program Production Strategies of 24-7 News Channels in Taiwan---A Case Study on CTITV

Chen, Chang Chi Unknown Date (has links)
This case study on CTITV is to investigate the international news program production strategies of 24-7 news channels in Taiwan. Based on the content analysis and the in-depth interview with the visual design manager, the special programming center director and the reporter in CTITV, we explored the orientation and function of the program, “Sisy’s World News”, the allocation of the personnel and resources, the production process, the news production techniques and creativity, and the vision of the development of this program. Moreover, we interviewed three professionals and practitioners in journalism so as to elaborate the elements of the ideal international news program, the alternatives for the predicament of international news production and the evaluation on “Sisy’s World News”. The result of the study discovered that CTITV has been supportive to its international news production. Hence, the international news program, “Sisy’s World News”, is independently operated by the special programming center which capitalizes the comparatively rich personnel and resources of international news. This international news program has been distinguished from its name, insightful news scripts, audio and visual presentations which comprehensively manifest the host’s unique personal style. In the future, the director and the reporters are going to enrich the contents and topics to broaden the audience’s horizons. According to the result of content analysis, the program focused on Mainland China, European Union, North America, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. The theme was mostly related to business, politics, society, culture and education. Straight news and the news headlines which summarized the weekly news from the international press were the primary approaches of the presentation. The professionals indicated that the ideal international news program should provide the issues with cultural and geographical proximity for the audience. More importantly, the reporters should get more chances covering the news in person to interpret the news by their own observations and perspectives. However, rating is always the restriction of the international news production. The administrators should break the myth of rating and find more budget supporters for the better quantity and quality of the international news programs. Additionally, the proportion of the hard and soft news should be near equal. The host and the reporters in “Sisy’s World News” should be objective and cautious about the interpretations of the news and try to make the hard news relevant and interesting to the audience as well.

Geopolitics and discourse, from the first Golf War to the Iraq's occupation (1991-2003)

Howayek, Hayat 11 October 2011 (has links)
Since 1990-1991, the number of satellite channels and viewers has grown exponentially in the Arab world, taking advantage of a geolinguistic space that afforded unprecedented degree of openness in a field previously dominated by t ightly-controlled state-owned television stations. The date also coincides with the inception of the New World Order, the waging of the first Gulf War which established a new regional order, and the stirrings of the society of communication. This study of news channels (Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya) and “flexible” channels such as (Abu Dhabi and Al Manar), aims to examine whether they are an expression of change or adaption and whether they serve to perpetuate the status quo of the powers that fund them.
