BCIs That Use P300 Event-Related Potentials

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in electroencephalography are manifestations at the scalp of neural activity that is triggered by, and is involved in, the processing of specific events. This chapter focuses on braincomputer interfaces (BCIs) that use P300, an endogenous ERP component. The P300 is a positive potential that occurs over central-parietal scalp 250- 700 msec after a rare event occurs in the context of the oddball paradigm. This paradigm has three essential attributes: a subject is presented with a series of events (i.e., stimuli), each of which falls into one of two classes; the events that fall into one of the classes are less frequent than those that fall into the other class; and the subject performs a task that requires classifying each event into one of the two classes.

The Effects of Low-Intensity Exercise on Neurocognitive Function

Acute aerobic exercise exerts a small beneficial effect on cognition. Much of the research to date has focused on cognitive changes following a bout of exercise, while little is currently known about changes in cognitive performance during exercise. The limited research that has been conducted suggests either positive, negative, or no effects on cognitive performance during exercise. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-intensity cycling on cognitive function in college-aged students, indexed by response accuracy, reaction time, P3 amplitude, and P3 latency. Twenty-seven (Mage = 22.9 ± 3.0 years old) college-aged individuals were counterbalanced into low-intensity exercise (EX) and seated control (SC) conditions. During each condition, participants completed a 10-minute resting baseline period, 20 minutes of either sustained cycling or seated rest, and a 20-minute recovery period. Primary outcomes were assessed at 10-minute intervals (5 blocks total) throughout each condition via a modified oddball task. Across time blocks, both conditions exhibited faster reaction times on frequent trials but reduced accuracy to rare trials, suggesting a speed-accuracy tradeoff. There were no differences between conditions in P3 latency whereas a significant reduction in P3 amplitude was observed during the 20-minute exercise period compared to the control condition. Taken together, the results suggest that exercise at lower doses may have minimal influence on behavioral outcomes of cognitive performance but may impact more basic measures of brain function. Information gathered from this study may aid in the development of appropriate exercise prescriptions for populations looking to specifically target cognitive function deficits.

Attentional control in middle childhood is highly dynamic: Strong initial distraction is followed by advanced attention control

The ability to shield against distraction while focusing on a task requires the operation of executive functions and is essential for successful learning. We investigated the short-term dynamics of distraction control in a data set of 269 children aged 4– 10 years and 51 adults pooled from three studies using multilevel models. Participants performed a visual categorization task while a task-irrelevant sequence of sounds was presented which consisted of frequently repeated standard sounds and rarely interspersed novel sounds. On average, participants responded slower in the categorization task after novel sounds. This distraction effect was more pronounced in children. Throughout the experiment, the initially strong distraction effects declined to the level of adults in the groups of 6- to 10-year-olds. Such a decline was neither observed in the groups of the 4- and 5-year-olds, who consistently showed a high level of distraction, nor in adults, who showed a constantly low level of distraction throughout the experimental session. Results indicate that distraction control is a highly dynamic process that qualitatively and quantitatively differs between age groups.We conclude that the analysis of short-term dynamics provides valuable insights into the development of attention control and might explain inconsistent findings regarding distraction control in middle childhood. In addition, models of attention control need to be refined to account for age-dependent rapid learning mechanisms. Our findings have implications for the design of learning situations and provide an additional source of information for the diagnosis and treatment of children with attention deficit disorders.

In den letzten Jahren wurde es dank der Entwicklung moderner Bildgebungsverfahren möglich, die neuronalen Korrelate kognitiver Arbeitsprozesse teilweise aufzudecken und immer besser zu verstehen. Durch diese Fortschritte ist es heute möglich, diese identifizierten Systeme im Rahmen der Erforschung psychiatrischer Erkrankungen auf Dysregulationen zu untersuchen. Dabei wird seit einigen Jahren der Suche nach Endophänotypen eine tragende Rolle zuteil. Endophänotypen befinden sich dabei intermediär zwischen dem klinischen Phänotyp und dem für die Krankheit kodierenden Genotyp. Ihre Identifizierung soll in Zukunft dazu beitragen, das nach neuesten Erkenntnissen nicht mehr aktuelle psychiatrische Klassifikationssystem zu reformieren und damit eine krankheitsgerechtere Einteilung der einzelnen Diagnosegruppen zu gewährleisten. In diesem Rahmen wurden in der hier vorliegenden Arbeit drei verschiedene neuronale Systeme, die dem Belohnungssystem, dem verbalen sowie visuell-räumlichen Arbeitsgedächtnis und den Aufmerksamkeitsprozessen zugrunde liegen, in Bezug auf ihre Relevanz als potentielle Endophänotypen getestet. 20 erstgradige Angehörige von schizophrenen Patienten unterzogen sich in diesem Zuge einer etwa einstündigen fMRT- Untersuchung, während der sie Aufgaben zur Aktivierung dieser neuronalen Netzwerke lösen sollten. Die dabei gemachten Funde indizieren Dysregulationen verschiedener neuronaler Areale während aller Aufgaben. In Bezug auf vorherige Studien zu Endophänotypen sowohl mit Angehörigen als auch mit Schizophrenen konnten diese Funde in den wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund eingeordnet werden. Dabei konnten einige vielversprechende Beobachtungen festgehalten werden. Es ergaben sich potentielle Endophänotypen in Bereichen neuronaler Hirnstrukturen, die der Verarbeitung von kognitiven Kontrollprozessen zugrunde liegen. Des Weiteren konnte eine Dysregulation vor allem des rechten anterioren Thalamus konstatiert werden. Auch Hyperaktivierungen in Arealen des PFCs und im prämotorischen Kortex konnten ebenfalls durch Funde anderer Studien bestätigt werden. Zusammenfassend stehen die wissenschaftlichen Forschungen zur Endophänotypenfrage wohl noch am Anfang eines langen, jedoch sehr vielversprechenden Weges, der die aktuellen Klassifikationssysteme in Zukunft revolutionieren könnte. Die ersten Schritte sind getan und müssen nun in weiteren, umfangreicheren und möglicherweise auch präziseren Studien fortgeführt werden.

Neuroelectric Indices of Emotional Processing in Individuals with History of Concussion

Concussions are a common type of traumatic brain injury resulting in a series of physical, emotional, and psychosocial symptoms. Following a concussion, emotional processing is thought to be altered through small functional and structural disruptions that impact information processing pathways, which may eventually manifest as behavioral impairments. Thus, the use of both behavioral and functional outcomes may be effective for assessing the changes in emotional processing that may occur following a concussion. The primary purpose of this study was to examine behavioral and neurocognitive differences in response to emotional face images between individuals with and without a history of concussion. Fifty participants (18 female; 32 male) were recruited and assigned to either the concussed (n = 23; Mage = 24.1 ± 1.0) or non-concussed (n = 27; Mage = 23.2 ± 0.6) group based on medical and self-reported concussion history. Participants completed a modified emotional oddball paradigm where representative positive (smiling), negative (frowning), and neutral faces from the Radboud Faces Database were displayed. Neuroelectric measures of P3 amplitude and latency, as well as behavioral measures of response accuracy and reaction time were assessed during the experiment. The concussion group showed significant reductions in accuracy, but no difference in reaction time compared to the non-concussed group. An increase (i.e., slower) in P3 latency was also found in the concussed group, with no observed group differences in P3 amplitude. Findings suggest that concussions may lead to chronic neuroelectric and behavioral deficits in classifying emotional, facial expressions.

Les effets acoustiques furent départagés des effets émotionnels à l'aide d'une tâche contrôle similaire utilisant une version brouillée des sons originaux et dépourvue de propriétés émotionnelles. Les résultats du oddball émotionnel qui ont différé du oddball contrôle ont montré des effets de valence inversés dans les composantes électrophysiologiques P2 et P300; la valence négative ayant une amplitude plus grande dans la fenêtre de 130-270ms mais moins intense autour de 290-460ms, lorsque comparée aux valences positives et neutres. Les résultats P2 peuvent être interprétés comme une mobilisation attentionnelle précoce privilégiant les stimuli potentiellement dangereux, tandis que les résultats de la P300 pourrait indiquer une évaluation moins détaillée de ces stimuli. / In an auditory oddball task, negatively (disgust) and positively (laughter) valenced sounds were presented as rare targets. To disentangle acoustic effects from emotional ones, a control oddball was conceived with a non‐emotional scrambled version of the original target sounds as rare targets. Results from the emotional oddball that differed from the control oddball showed an inverse effect of valence in the P2 and P300 range, with negative valence having higher mean amplitude values in the 130‐270ms range, but lower values in the 290‐460 range when compared to ERPs elicited by positive and neutral valence. The P2 results are interpreted as early mobilization of attentional resources towards potentially threatening stimuli, while the P300 results could reflect less detailed evaluation of such stimuli.
