Change through tourism: resident perceptions of tourism developmentDoh, Minsun 15 May 2009 (has links)
Many view tourism as a tool for community development. Especially in the rural areas experiencing economic hardships, tourism often is considered an instrument for revitalization of a local economy helping to improve quality of life and protect natural and cultural resources. However, many researchers have raised concerns about an overly optimistic view by asserting that tourism development inevitably affects the corresponding community. Empirical studies suggest that development of tourism brings environmental, sociocultural, and economic changes to the community where it is developed. Thus, it is important that planners look at the attitudes of local people towards tourism development in their community before an actual development takes place. The conceptual basis of this study is development and change theory and empirical findings of tourism impact research. This study provides information to assist in understanding questions related to the rural communities’ tourism planning process in a development context, and residents’ perceptions of the impact of tourism and its further development. A self-administered mail-back survey was administered to see how the residents of Brewster County, Texas perceive tourism development in the region. Considering the 43% of the Hispanic population in the area, both English and Spanish versions of the questionnaires were sent to the possible respondents. The overall response rate was 37% after two rounds of survey administered during January and February of 2006. The structural model confirmed that people’s value orientation regarding nature was an important variable that explained residents’ community attachment, which influenced their attitudes toward tourism through attitudes toward local participation. The results indicated that residents’ values were oriented toward nature and that they were highly attached to their communities. In addition, their tourism attitudes were varied based on the types of tourism impacts they were expecting. Although they were supportive of tourism related development, they felt that certain types of tourism development were more appropriate for their community. Specifically, “medium impact” tourism development were perceived to be desirable for the northern part of the region, whereas low impact development options were perceived to be more acceptable for the southern part of the region by their residents.

The Acculturation of Chinese-American Adolescents in Negotiating Autonomy and Connectedness: Comparison between Chinese- and European-AmericansChang, Tzu-Fen 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Chinese-American adolescents were compared with the major group in the
United States (European-American adolescents) in negotiating self-concepts related with
autonomy and connectedness. Senses of autonomy and connectedness were evaluated by
examining adolescents' cultural value orientations (individualism and collectivism),
parent-adolescent relationships (decision-making styles and power perception), and
relations between the two constructs. Participants included 56 first- or second-generation
Chinese-American adolescents (18.5% of first-generation and 81.5% of secondgeneration)
and 45 European-American adolescents, accompanied with their mothers (47
Chinese-American mothers and 42 European-American mothers).
In terms of cultural value orientations, Chinese- and European-Americans' selfconcepts
were consistently oriented towards collectivism more than individualism in
adolescents and mothers. With regard to parent-adolescent relationships, Chinese-
American adolescents have identified with the dominant culture to show similar desires
of being autonomous as European-American adolescents. However, Chinese-American mothers adopted more authoritarian, conservative, and inflexible parenting styles than
European-American mothers. With regard to the relations between variables of cultural
value orientations and variables of parent-adolescent relationships, the pattern of
findings was consistent with the notion that Chinese-American adolescents who
internalize highly collectivistic cultural values displayed more collectivistic
communication styles in parent-adolescent relationships than European-American
adolescents.

Relationship Between Future Time Orientation, Adaptive Self-regulation, And Well-being: Self-type And Age Related DifferencesGuler-edwards, Ayca 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the present study was to investigate: (a) self and age related differences in time perspective and future time orientations / (b) age differences in adaptive self-regulation / and (c) the contribution of future and self orientations and adaptive self-regulation to well-being. A questionnaire consisting of measures concerning future outlook and time perspective, adaptive self-regulation, self-construals, goals and subjective well-being variables was administered to 404 adults (191 young, 128 middle-aged, 85 older). Also, short structured interviews about time, future, end of life and age were conducted for descriptive and exploratory purposes with nine individuals, three individuals from each age group. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that, (1) older adults had less open and planful, but more anxious future outlook than younger adults, and middle-aged adults had a time perspective more like older adults&rsquo / (2) there is a difference in the content of the goals reported by each age group, and total number of goals reported by older adults was lower than the number of goals reported by young and middle-aged adults / (3) for all age groups, balanced type (i.e., related-individuated, as defined by the Balanced Integration and Differentiation, BID, model) individuals had the most favourable future outlook, and only balanced-type individuals at young, middle and older ages did not differ from each other in terms of having the most favourable future outlook / (4) balanced type individuals reengaged into other goals more than the unbalanced type individuals when they were faced with an unattainable goal / (5) goal reengagement increased with having more open future time perspective, and the contribution of open future time perspective to goal reengagement was much more for middle-aged and older adults than younger adults / (6) self orientations, future time perspective and goal reengagement contribute to well-being, and contributions of future time perspective and goal reengagement to well-being after the contribution of self orientations were considerable only for young and middle-aged adults / (7) gender was not found to have a significant effect on goal reengagement and well-being, but women had slightly more anxious and fatalistic future attitudes than men.

A cross age study was conducted to investigate 6th, 7th and 8th grade students&rsquo / value orientations, environmental optimism, and environmental concern. In addition,
gender and grade level differences in the environmental-related attributes were
examined.
A total of 938 (491 girls and 447 boys) students attending public schools
located in Kelkit, the district of Gumushane, were administered a questionnaire
consisting of Demographics, Environmental Attitudes and Apathy Scales,
Environmental Concern Scale , Environmental Optimism Scale, Locus of Control
Scale and Conservation Behavior Scale.
In general, students who participated in the current study found to endorse
eco-centric attitudes, and express a high degree of concern as well as optimism level
about the current and future state of the environmental issues and problems. They
also seemed to be interested in environmental issues and problems and perceived
environmental problems as one of the two or three most important problems
currently being faced.
In order to examine the role of gender and grade level on students&rsquo / environmental attitudes, two separate two-way MANOVAs were conducted. The
results revealed a statistically significant gender and grade level differences both on students&rsquo / ecocentric, apathy and anthropocentric attitudes and on students&rsquo / environmental optimism and concern levels.

Effects Of A Web-based Internet Search Scaffolding Tool On Metacognitive Skills Improvement Of Students With Different Goal OrientationsSendurur, Emine 01 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, the aim was to investigate the effects of the web-based internet search scaffolding tool (WISST) on the improvement of metacognitive skills of 7th grade students associated with their goal orientation. This study utilized a static-group pretest-posttest design. The first experiment group received web-based metacognitive scaffolding tool treatment / the second experiment group received teacher-based metacognitive scaffolding / and the control group had no scaffolding. The designed tool aimed to scaffold users throughout web searching by emphasizing certain metacognitive skills improvement. Three main instruments were used to gather data: metacognition inventory for Internet search (MIIS), patterns of adaptive learning scale (PALS), and achievement test. 76 7th grade elementary school students in Ankara, Turkey participated in this study. The data gathered from the participants were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. The results of the study indicated that WISST tool helped students improve certain metacognitive skills including monitoring, planning, controlling, and strategy generation. Its unique effectiveness was on the improvement of controlling skills. Teacher scaffolding group was also successful in improvement of strategy generation skills. No effects of goal orientations on the improvement of metacognitive skills were found in the analyses. Within hierarchical regression models, only pre-MIIS scores significantly contributed to the model. Students having less improved metacognitive skills were found associated with less trials and less visits. Students having poor performance work grades were tended to copy-paste more, try less, and visit less. Task difficulty and task type was observed to influence the search patterns of students. Search patterns and reflections also indicated that scaffolded groups made positive difference in search patterns.

How Taiwanese expatriates¡¦ personalcharacters, career orientations, expatriate motivation and expatriate adjustment affect their intention to stay in Mainland ChinaLee, Chiu-Yen 31 July 2000 (has links)
Abstract
After the Mainland China¡¦s opening policy, more and more enterprises invested in this giant business market, which is full of adventures and opportunities . In earlier days, only few people wanted to be assigned for working in Mainland China. Nowadays, much more people volunteer to develop their careers in Mainland China for a longer period. The thesis is trying to study the expartiate¡¦s personal characters, career orientations, expatriate motivation and expatriate adjustment, and further understanding the impacts of these four facters on the intention to stay in Mainland China. The results of this study indicate that:
1.The more voluntary expatriate have to work in Mainland China, the higher intention expatriate have to stay in Mainland China.
2.The expatriates who live with their families will have higher intention to stay in Mainland China.
3.People whose career orientation indicates ¡§getting ahead¡¨ have positive correlation with the expatriate motivations, which indicate self-fulfilling, self-esteem and security. The ¡§getting secure¡¨ people have negative correlation with the self- fulfilling motivation.
4.People whose personal characters indicate high ¡§interpersonal skills¡¨ will positively affect the expatriates¡¦ ¡§getting high¡¨ and ¡§getting ahead¡¨ career orientations, but negatively affect¡§getting balance¡¨ career orientation. Expatriates¡¦ high ¡§ability of conflict solving¡¨ will negaitively influent the ¡§getting ahead¡¨ career orientation. Furthermore obvious, their highly ¡§optimistic tendency¡¨ will negaitively influent the ¡§getting secure¡¨ career orientation.
5.People whose personal characters indicate high ¡§interpersonal skills¡¨, ¡¨ability of culture adjustment and ¡§optimistic tendency¡¨ will positively influent the expatriate whose expatriate motivation indicates ¡§self-actualization¡¨.Their high ¡§ability of conflict solvingl¡¨ will negaitively affect the ¡§secure¡¨ expatriate motivation. Expatriates¡¦ high ¡§ambiguous tolerance¡¨ will negaitively influent their ¡§social¡¨ expatriate motivation
6.People whose career orientation indicates ¡§getting free¡¨ have negaitive impact on their intention to stay in Mainland China.
7.People whose expatriate motivation are showing ¡§self- actualization¡¨ and ¡§social¡¨ have positively influence to their intention to stay in Mainland China.
8. People whose personal characters are showing high ¡¨ability of culture adjustment and interpersonal skills¡¨ positively influenceing their intention to stay in Mainland China. The expatriate¡¦ adjustment is a mediating factor between personal characters and the intention to stay in Mainland China.

Motivation in hybrid courses : the influence of self efficacy and sense of classroom community on goal orientationKim, Myoungsook 17 April 2014 (has links)
This study explored changes in goal orientations throughout the semester that might be influenced by self efficacy and a sense of classroom community in hybrid courses in which course management systems (CMS) were used. A hybrid course is distinguished from a traditional face-to-face classroom in that there is an extension of the class, and students interact online in addition to face-to-face. Data were gathered from 14 hybrid courses two times during a semester, once at the beginning of the semester and once again at the end, and were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the relationships among the variables. Overall, the results indicated that each goal orientation changed throughout the semester, dynamically interacted with one another, and had unique relationship with self efficacy and sense of classroom community. More specifically, first, a sense of classroom community acted as a significant antecedent of goal orientations and mediated the relationship between pre-mastery goal orientation and post-mastery goal orientation. Second, self efficacy, another antecedent of goal orientations, mediated the relationship between pre-performance avoidance goal orientation and post-performance avoidance goal orientation. Third, post-performance approach goal orientation was influenced by sense of classroom community but not by self efficacy whereas post-performance avoidance goal orientation was influenced by self efficacy but not by sense of classroom community. Fourth, the nature of performance approach goal orientation at the beginning of the semester seemed to change throughout the semester as students gain or lose their competence and develop sense of classroom community. The results also showed that the collaborative function of the course management system most significantly contributed to the sense of classroom community in hybrid courses among four categories of functions (information delivery, external links, course materials, and collaborative function). Lastly, the study suggests ways for instructional designers and college teachers to identify and design courses that promote motivation and a sense of classroom community using various CMS functions, thereby enhancing teachers’ teaching and student learning. / text

Employees’ information-seeking behaviors in multicultural contexts : development of an advanced model including information overload, team-level factors, and cultural backgroundsCho, Jaehee Kyle, 1976- 02 June 2011 (has links)
The primary goal of the current study is to develop a more advanced model of information-seeking behaviors. For achieving this goal, it paid attention to two social phenomena characterizing contemporary society: informationalization and globalization. First, focusing on these two influential phenomena, this study investigated how individual-level factors—information overload, information ambiguity, and goal orientations—affected information-seeking behaviors among employees in a multinational corporation. Next, in addition to these individual predictors of information-seeking behaviors, this study explored the effects of two team-level factors—team task interdependence and team tenure—on the relationships between the main predictors and information-seeking behaviors. Last, paying more attention to the multicultural context, this study investigated how these employees in a multinational corporation seek task and feedback information from two culturally different sources: American direct advisors and Korean expatriates. In order to more thoroughly investigate the roles of the cultural backgrounds of information sources, this study explored how American employees perceived the cultural backgrounds of the two culturally different sources and how such perceptions influenced those employees’ information-seeking behaviors. / text
