Forest owners’ and firefighters’ experiences of managing forest fires in Australia : What can Sweden learn from Australian experiences?

Sandberg, Karin January 2023 (has links)

A Narrative Study about Career Opportunities and Challenges

Hadjipetri, Rebecka January 2023 (has links)
There is an uneven level of business owners in Sweden where the proportion is 70% men and 30% women. The purpose of this study is to gain an increased understanding of women who are business owners. Partly by examining factors that influenced the women to become business owners, and partly what career opportunities and challenges the women experienced at the start of the company, experiencing now and thoughts about the future. Theoretical concepts that are used are turning-points and life-design. Turning-points is a concept within the Careership theory of career decision from Hodkinson and Sparkes and life-design is a concept from Savickas et al. and includes elements of career construction, self-construction, and lifelong self-construction. There is a social constructivist perspective in the study and the method that has been used is qualitative through narrative interviews. In the result four themes will be presented; factors that influenced becoming a business owner, challenges then and now, career opportunities then and now, and challenges and career opportunities in the future. The result shows that there are forced turning-points, self-initiating turning-points and sometimes a combination of both before the career choice of becoming a business owner. Furthermore, the results show that people regardless of age need to do transitions in working life and a life-design is a necessity for coping in a constant changing and turbulent labor market. The result shows that most of the women have a parent who are business owners and some also have other people within their network. It also appears that the women have learned to deal with different challenges and new activities within their business, which has strengthened their self-confidence and has led to increased self-leadership. They have also had to deal with creating job opportunities to make a living, which is different from a salaried employment. They further highlight the importance of the network where other business owners provide an enhancing in competence and supportive function. Everyone wants to continue being business owners despite various future challenges in climate change and ongoing inflation. They still see career opportunities and have different goals in their business in the future.

Non-industrial private forest owners’ harvesting decisions : An empirical study of forest owners’ harvesting decisions in Norrbotten

Grath, Brenden January 2023 (has links)
The forest plays a large role both nationally and internationally towards a sustainable planet. Therefore, understanding non-industrial private forest owners’ preferences is important to achieve the environmental targets, since they are a large ownership group in Sweden. The present study focusses on non-industrial private forest owners’ harvesting decisions in Norrbotten. Furthermore, the study extends to analyze how the forest owners’ preferences towards promotion of ecosystem services are affected if compensation is offered. To understand the harvesting decisions of non-industrial private forest owners’, an empirical approach was used where a questionnaire was constructed. The data were analyzed through logistic regression. The results suggest that non-industrial private forest owners’ harvesting decision is positively affected by previous experience in the forest, days present in the forest, membership in a forest cooperative and a price increase of timber. Forest owners with economic objectives harvest more than owners with no or other objectives. No significant relationship between nature- and economic objectives in the harvesting decisions were identified. The results related to willingness to promote ecosystem services for compensation indicated ambiguous results.

Forest : Ecological and emotional layers within a Swedish forest / Forest : Ecological and emotional layers within a Swedish forest

Edlund, Michaela January 2023 (has links)
Through qualitative interviews and secondary research, the emotional and ecological layers to a forest have been explored. Several studies and sources of data speak against Swedish forestry being sustainable, and the industry often views the forest through anthropocentric ethics with focus on economic value. The aim is to inform and inspire small-scale private forest owners in their decision making in forestry to consider more environmentally sustainable cultivation methods. There is a gap in communication between facts on forestry and small-scale private forest owners which the project aims to fill. The project looks at the forest holistically, through biocentric ethics and the Swedish folk art Kurbits, and covers ecological and cultural sustainability. This takes the shape of a booklet which uncovers a forest’s layers in both text and visuals.

Perceptions and Adoption of Cryptocurrencies in the Aftermath of the Greek Financial Crisis. A Study on the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Apostolopoulos, Stavros January 2023 (has links)
This research study investigates the potential of cryptocurrencies in alleviating the consequences of the financial crisis and identifying new avenues for economic development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. It is motivated by the significant economic downturn experienced by Greece following the 2008 financial crisis, which led to a risk of bankruptcy and a drastic reduction in GDP per capita, with the consecutive implementation of capital controls further disrupting the financial transactions in the country. The region under study is documented for its low economic development level and GDP per capita compared to the national and EU averages. Through a mixed-methods approach, including a questionnaire-based survey and data analysis, this study explores the perceptions and behaviors of consumers and business owners in that region regarding cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, the survey employs closed-ended questions delivered through an internet-based platform while using probability and non-probability sampling techniques to target consumers and business owners. Consequently, the collected data are examined through the scopes of descriptive and deductive analyses with the use of SPSS software, with the findings of this research aiming to shed light on the role of cryptocurrencies as a means to mitigate the impact of the financial crisis and stimulate economic activity in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The findings revealed that while participants did not believe that introducing a parallel digital currency would improve the Greek economy, consumers affected by the crisis showed eagerness to invest and transact in cryptocurrencies. Business owners, on the other hand, were hesitant to view cryptocurrencies as long-term assets and did not believe in their capacity to transform the region’s economy. The study's outcomes contribute to the growing body of knowledge on cryptocurrencies' adoption and potential benefits in regions facing economic challenges.

Is it appropriate to int roduce free subleasing in Bostadsrättslagen?

Larsson, Andrea, Uggla, Uggla January 2019 (has links)
Today, Sweden suffers from a shortage of housing in many of the country's growth areas, a shortage of housing that hardens the country's growth and the creation of new jobs. Svenskt Näringsliv believes that several measures are needed to solve the shortcoming. (Svenskt Näringsliv 2019) The structures in housing policy therefore need to be reviewed and a longterm solution is a must. In the short term, however, there is a possible saving in the country's tenant-owned apartments that, with more generous rules on subleasing, could provide a necessary supplement to temporary housing where needed. According to the current provisions of Bostadsrättslagen, a tenant-owner may sublease his apartment if the board of the tenant owners’ co-operative agrees to this. In cases where consent is not required, the tenant-owner has the opportunity to turn to Hyresnämnden, which will test the interests of the two parties against each other in order to decide the issue. Thus, it can be stated that it is not up to the tenant-owner himself to decide whether he can sublease his apartment. The revisions that have been made since Bostadsrättslagen was issued have been to the benefit of the tenant-owner. Despite this there are today various restrictions that prevents the tenant-owner from freely subleasing his apartment. The purpose of this essay has therefore been to clarify the reasoning behind the provisions of the regulations, test its relevance based on the current situation and finally to analyse whether it is appropriate to introduce free provisions on subleasing, for independent use, to the advantage of the tenant-owner. In order to investigate this, an overall literature study was first conducted to map the extent of the issue in sources of law. Subsequently, an in-depth analysis of the sources of law, considered relevant regarded to the purpose of the thesis, was performed. The sources of law that were processed in this essay were laws, proposition of laws and government reports. Consequently, case law and parliament reports has not been addressed in this paper. Lastly, the question was answered with anchoring in the in-depth literature analysis. The conclusion is that it is appropriate to introduce free subleasing in Bostadsrättslagen if the benefits of this provision outweigh the scope of the work that a revision of the law could entail.

Swedish Homeowners’ Renovation Plans and Interest in a ‘One-Stop Shop’ / Swedish Homeowners’ Renovation Plans and Interest in a ‘One-Stop Shop’

Jawad, Muhammad January 2021 (has links)
In this article, we analyse the factors influencing homeowners' plans to renovate their houses in the near future. We also examine their interest in the idea of a one-stop shop where a single actor provides services and all necessary information required for energy efficiency renovations. Our analysis is based on the content of an online survey questionnaire of 12194 homeowners in Sweden. Approximately 83% of the respondents intend to renovate in the near future, with around 55% opting for energy-efficient renovation of their dwelling. Environmental concerns, past energy-saving measures taken by the respondents, and education positively influenced their renovation plans. While 28% of respondents expressed their interest in a one-stop shop, work guarantee, environmental concerns and renovation plans were the main elements affecting interest in the one-stop shop.

Sticky Rents and the CPI for Owner-Occupied Housing

Ozimek, Adam January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines the implications of sticky rents on the measurement of owner-occupied housing in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). I argue that marginal and not average rents are the most theoretically justified measurement of owners' equivalent rent (OER), and that the current measurement of rental inflation using average rents is methodologically incorrect. I then discuss the literature on sticky rents and tenure discounts and present a theoretical model showing the implications of sticky rents for aggregate measures of inflation. Then I use two new data sources to construct marginal rent measures to compare to average rent measures. The results show that marginal rents reflect market turning points sooner, and show a larger post- housing bubble decline in rents. In addition, marginal rents are shown to forecast overall inflation better than average rents. Finally, the implications of these results for policy are considered using the Taylor Rule for optimal monetary policy. The results present suggestive evidence that the impacts of switching to marginal rents may be large enough to significantly impact monetary policy and allow the Federal Reserve to be more responsive to both the boom and bust of housing bubbles. / Economics

A Mixed-methods Study on Female Landowner Estate Planning Objectives

zimmerer, rebekah 11 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The majority of the forested land in New England is owned by private landowners, a large number of whom are at or above retirement age. In the coming decades these landowners are going to be making decisions about what happens to their land once they no longer own it. Female landowners specifically play a critical role in the long-term planning and decision-making process. Women generally have a longer life expectancy than men and assess their level of confidence and financial stability in ways that differ from men. This difference in perception influences the decisions they make about their land. Despite this, little is known about decisions female landowners are making and barriers they face to formulating informed decisions that are in line with their goals. In order to understand more about female landowners’ estate planning objectives, I conducted a mixed-methods study. Through a mail survey and subsequent qualitative interviews, I found that women were more likely than men to have lower confidence confidence in moving forward with plans for the land, lower certainty that their financial resources were adequate to move forward, and less certainty when it came to future decisions about their land. However, women who were certain about their estate planning objectives were more likely than men to have a conservation-based decision. The results of this mixed-methods study are applied to peer-to-peer network events and outcomes are discussed.
