Ultimate Controllers, Ownership and the Probability of Insolvency in Financially Distressed Firms

No / This paper investigates the impact of corporate ownership and control on the outcome of financial distress. It is argued that the likelihood of financial distress resulting in insolvency depends on whether firms have controllers, the type of controllers and their cash flow ownership. Using a sample of 484 UK firms, 81 of which filed for insolvency, we show that financially distressed firms with controllers are more likely to be insolvent than widely held firms, where the probability of insolvency is greater when controllers are family or financial institutions. However, the probability of insolvency reduces significantly as the controllers’ cash flow ownership increases beyond 10%

The Impact of Equity Ownership Groups on Investment: Evidence from Ukraine

Yes / We empirically investigate the impact of different ownership groups on companies’ investment in Ukraine with a novel dynamic investment model where investment is based on present and historical levels of profitability (market-to-book value of equity) and lagged investment. Groups include state, insider, non-domestic, financial and financial and industrial group (FIG) ownership. Contrary to the literature, we find that the past level of profitability significantly affects investment; the presence of and increases in state ownership have a negative impact on firms’ investment, as is the case for non-domestic and financial companies’ ownership. Insider and FIG ownership have no impact on investment. We explain the results by the extent of liquidity concerns (hard and soft budget constraints) and the extent of asset stripping for the corresponding ownership group and relate them to over- and underinvestment, and to the free cash flow or cash constraint hypothesis.

Consumption and home ownership: the evolving meaning of home

This study investigates the purchase and consumption of a house. An interpretive methodology was used, which resulted in multiple indepth interviews with fourteen informants and ten months of participant observation with Appalachian Mountain Housing building two houses for needy consumers. Chapters two to four describe the major emergent themes from the study. Specifically, chapter two looks at the house as a constraint on consumption. The purchase of a house channels a large portion of the consumers’ resources into payment of the mortgage and purchase of complementary items, and constrains future consumption. Chapter three examines the transformation of a house into a home, and describes four ways by which the informants for this study made this transformation. Chapter four provides an interpretation of the emergent themes discussed in chapters two and three, and suggests the home is a continuously evolving entity. The home changes both physically and symbolically to reflect changes in the lives of the informants. Chapters five and six connect the findings of this study to the existing literature on consumer acquisitiveness. Specifically, chapter five discusses materialism in the context of the purchase of a house, and concludes that the experiences of the informants for this study are substantially different from the existing theories of materialism. This may be due to nonmaterialistic informants, but it may also reflect inadequate theories of materialism. The ideological assumptions of current theories of materialism are examined, and the study concludes an ideological bias exists. Some of the results are then reinterpreted using political ideology as a guide. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the impact of children on materialistic consumption. Chapter six expands on McCracken’s (1988a) theory of Diderot unities and the Diderot effect to better understand the findings of this study. McCracken’‘s theory is expanded by integrating 1) sources of the correspondence between possessions and certain cultural categories; 2) meaning extraction and creation; 3) the extended self; and 4) materialism. The results of previous chapters of this study are then reinterpreted in light of the integrated model. The study concludes with a summary of the findings, and a discussion of the contribution of the study, as well as limitations and future directions for subsequent research. / Ph. D.

Do agglomeration externalities matter for firms’ survival in emerging economies: The case of Vietnam

Previous studies have paid little attention to analyzing the impact of agglomeration externalities on a firm’s survival, especially for developing countries. This study applies various survival analysis methods to examine the relationship of three main types of agglomeration externalities: specialization, diversification (related variety and unrelated variety), and urbanization on the survival of firms in Vietnam, with respect to different types of firms ownership: state-owned firms, foreign-owned firms, and domestic private firms. This study confirms the positive role of specialization in reducing the exit probability for firms, especially for foreign-owned firms. The survival probability of foreign-owned firms and domestic private firms is insensitive to any type of diversification, and only related variety increases the survival chance for state-owned firms. In contrast, urbanization has a small negative impact on domestic private firms.

The thesis is composed of four chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of legislation of ownership of cooperative flat. Chapter one is composed of four main subchapters, and contains brief descriptions of basic institutes of each cooperative. The first chapter also contains an explanation what the cooperative is, who are the members of cooperative, what is an organization and regulations of cooperative, and how the cooperative expires. Second chapter is aimed on the flat cooperative. Its first part contains short historical overview of legal regulation of flat cooperative since their creation, till the second half of the twentieth century. Second subchapter explains the concept of the flat cooperative. Rights and obligations of the agricultural land ownership The purpose of my thesis is to make a summary of rights and obligations of the agricultural land ownership, describe and evaluate problems related to status of agricultural land owner.
