. / In the present work it was studied the maturation of the fruits and seeds of the piassava palm tree, the period of heating in pre-germination and the temperature effects in the germination of seeds, the comparison of seeds preparing methods with the different structures and conditions of storage and packages types, aiming for the maintenance and viability of the seeds. In the experiments of maturation it were evaluated the fruit length and diameter, water content, dry and fresh matter weight of the fruits and seeds and in the second experiment, it was added the seed germination test and was determined the free fatty acids content at the last three harvests. After the 9 months of the anthesis, occurred the physiological maturity of seeds and observed 100 % of germination, allowing to suggest the fruits harvest until three months before dispersion period. In laboratory, it were applied the temperatures of 25o, 30o and 35oC as pre-germination treatment, during 20, 40 and 60 days, resulting in small increase of germination, in relation to the heating time, besides the major period of the germination process. It was studied the temperature effects of 25o , 30o and 35o C in germinator, under the water content, rate and percentage of the seeds germination, resulting in 61 % of seeds germination, under temperature of 30o C, at the 45 days, after sowing. It was compared types of seeds preparation with different structures. The simple or double cutting, applied to the seeds did not facilitate the imbebition process and consequently did not carried out an increase in the germination. During the storage, the seeds viability were evaluated by the Tetrazolium's test at 0,5%, at the 30, 60 and 90 days, at dry chamber, cold chamber at 5o C and 15oC, and room temperature and in porous and impermeable packages, resulting in the best conservation of seeds, in room temperature and in locked plastic bags... Women, gender and protest : contesting oil palm plantation expansion in Sambas district, IndonesiaMorgan, Miranda Yeen January 2011 (has links)
The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations throughout Indonesia has resulted in a range of environmental and social consequences, including dispossessing rural people of their land. But these people are not accepting the infringements passively. As oil palm plantations have expanded and spread, so have instances of oil palm-related protest and resistance. In almost all accounts of oil palm, however, women and gender relations are overlooked. This thesis examines the role of women and gender relations in oil palm expansion and resistance in Indonesia today. Using a combination of secondary literature (specifically, the fields of agrarian political economy, feminist political ecology and contentious politics) and primary data, this thesis provides both a new case study and a new way - through the lens of gender - of understanding oil palm expansion and resistance in Indonesia. At the heart of this research study are the voices, opinions and experiences of 42 women who participated in one protest against dispossession in Sambas district, Indonesia. Emphasizing the role of these women in their households, communities and in this protest, as well as the gender relations that shape and are shaped by the women’s participation at all of these levels, this study offers new analysis of who is impacted by oil palm expansion, who resists it and in what ways. The Sambas case study demonstrates how gender relations shape all stages and facets of a protest, from womenʼs decisions to participate in protest (by informing their motivations and political opportunities) to womenʼs protest activities and how women experience protest outcomes. It also reveals how at all stages of mobilization, gender relations are not fixed. Rather, gender relations themselves may also be shaped by and through womenʼs participation in protest. This study has far-reaching implications not only for the future of oil palm expansion and resistance, but on women’s participation in protest, in politics in general and on gender relations.

Previous issue date: 2016-07-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The population growth contributes to environmental crises by stressing water resources and their reuse is an essential component of their management. The crisis requires conservation practices with emphasis on the use of treated domestic sewage in the forage palm production. In this way, the application of domestic effluent to the soil and the growth and development of the Mexican elephant ear (Opuntia tuna (L.) Mill) palm was evaluated. The experiment was carried out in the Milagres settlement, in the municipality of Apodi-RN, cultivated in a randomized complete block design in subdivided plots 3 x (4 + 1), with 4 replicates, being three densities (d1 - 0.10 x 0.80 x 2.20 m {33,333 plants / hectare}, d2 = 0.13 x 0.80 x 2.20 m {52,282 plants / hectare}, d3 = 0.20 x 0.80 x 2.20 m {66,666 plants / Hectare) and four intervals between irrigation with fixed blade (3.5 mm per event) with water supply - AA and treated domestic sewage - EA, being (2.3 days AA and 7, 14 and 21 days AE) with 3.5 mm each and one control as dry. The plant height, total number, length, width, thickness and perimeter of cladodes, as well as the average growth of green matter (MV) per plant and total, and the percentage of dry matter (DM), were evaluated every 75 days, beginning after planting, and ending at 375 days after planting (DAP); and at the end of one year, soil nutrients were evaluated in the 0-20 and 20-40 cm layers and the average of the exported nutrients, which were submitted to regression and means tests. There was an effect (p<0.01) of the intervals between irrigation in most of the variables, resulting in higher plants, more numerous cladodes, and elevations in MV and MS growth. And there was still increase of P (2,3 days), PST and P (7 and 21 days) and PST (14 days) in the 0-20 cm layer of soil. Also increased Mg (2.3 days), PST, Na and P (7 and 21 days) and PST and Na (14 days) in the 20-40 cm layer. There was as well a (P 0,01) effect at interval between irrigation and planting density in the 0-20 cm layer, resulting in an increase in PST and Na (7, 14 and 21 days in D1, D2 and D3) and Ca (21 days on D2). And there was a significant effect of the intervals between irrigation at (P 0,01) and (P 0,05) on the nutrient export only for Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn, respectively, but generating a deficit of N, Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn and surplus of P, K, Fe, Co and Na in the soil after harvesting the forage palm / O crescimento populacional contribui para crise ambiental pressionando os recursos hídricos e o seu reúso é um componente essencial para sua gestão.

Lodd. ex Mart] /Amaral, Fabiano Pereira do, 1979- January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: The international energetic context shows a run out of fuel reserve in a short term. Brazil due to its natural resources has tried through public politics to stimulate the research of alternative ways of energy. Several of these ways are based upon agricultural products and by-products with emphasis on the alcohol-fuel industry. Another alternative from plants recently discussed would be the production of biodiesel fuel. Initiatives have been internationally performed in order to obtain and use such fuel commercially. Within our region several oil plants can be potentially explored and have also been researched. This work aims to study an oil plant - macaúba [Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq) Lodd. ex Mart] to analyze its energetic and economical potential. Different physicochemical characterization was performed in macaúba plant including quality evaluation of its oil from pulp and nut. It was observed that such plant shows good characteristics as a source for plant oil for energetic and/or industrial uses being superiorly compared to other oil plants. It was also verified that the physicochemical parameters for this species indicate her importance as energetic source, considering its calorimetric values. The chromatographic analysis revealed that the macauba oils could be used for different purposes, like energetic potential for the pulp oil or pharmaceutical uses for the nut oil. / Orientador: Fernando Broetto / Coorientador: César Benedito Batistella / Coorientador: Sonia Maria Alves Jorge / Banca: José Pedro Serra Valente / Banca: Luiz Antonio Gallo / Mestre

January 2016 (has links)
Orientador: Odair Aparecido Fernandes / Coorientador: LeonG. Due to the shortage of basic studies for management of palm oil defoliators, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological response of plants under defoliation and effect of defoliation on the production, as well as to determine economic injury level. This work showed that the artificial injury using scissors and natural using B. sophorae larvae did not result in effects to the physiological process of the remaining leaves in interspecific hybrid seedlings (Elaeis guineensis Jacq. X Elaeis oleifera [Kunth, Cortés]) and, probably, the plants responded with compensatory mechanisms avoiding interruption of the physiological processes preventing the loss of water, keeping the autotrophic process in the remaining tissues. The results also showed that the defoliation either caused by the larvae or by scissors did not show differences and mechanical injuries can be used in simulated defoliation studies. Thus, this justified the use of artificial defoliation to study its effect on production. At the same time, the consumption of total leaf area was obtained for Opsiphanes invirae Hübner larvae, which was 286.064 cm2 and the level of economic damage to this species in oil palm. The economic injury level was 5.14 and 2.98 larvae per leaf using the product Dipel® WP and SC, respectively, using two-year loss data. Considering only the artificial injury ... Aspectos etnoecológicos e ecofisiológicos de Euterpe edulis Mart. (Arecaceae) / Ethnoecological and ecophisiological aspects of Euterpe edulis Mart. (Arecaceae)Favreto, Rodrigo January 2010 (has links)
A palmeira juçara – Euterpe edulis Mart. / The juçara palm - Euterpe edulis Mart. (Arecaceae) - is an abundant species in the forests where it occurs and that produces lots of flowers and fruits, being of great ecological importance. After decades of deforestation and heart of palm exploitation, it is reduced to fragments. This work aimed to study some ethnoecological and ecophisiological aspects of this species. We observed five management systems developed by local communities of the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul: management in early secondary forest, management in reforestation with exotic species, management in banana plantations, homegardens and illegal cutting in forests. We compared the growth of young palms in secondary forests and banana plantations from 2003 to 2008, and found that the size of palms in 2008 in banana plantations was five times greater than in forests, in spite of herbivory was higher in the banana plantations; the mortality was equivalent between the two treatments, despite the great variability, and presenting an intraspecific density-dependent pattern. There was a pattern of variation in reproductive phenology related to latitude and altitude; there was also a significant quadratic relationship between timing of flowering and fruit ripening, showing that the time required from flowering to fruit maturity depends on the time the flowering occurs. It was found that the management systems are different strategies of use of the juçara palm, and that this species has high potential for management.

Efeito de produtos fitossanitários sobre larvas de Rhynchophorus palmarum L., 1764 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) em laboratório / Effect of phytosanitary products on larvae of Rhynchophorus palmarum L., 1764 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in laboratorySantos, Samara dos 26 August 2016 (has links)
Rhynchophorus palmarum is the most harmful weevil pest of coconut palm due to its ability to find hosts from long distances and also to the direct and indirect losses it causes to the crop. Besides this, spores of the fungus that causes the stem bleeding disease have been found over R. palmarum body. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the insecticide thiamethoxam and its association to the fungicide cyproconazole against R. palmarum larvae under laboratory conditions, aiming at the possible use of these products for managing R. palmarum and the fungal diseases associated to it. Newly-hatched and intermediate-instar larvae were fed with artificial diet containing insecticide or fungicide in the concentrations of 0.1%; 0.5%; 1.0% and 2.0%, and also the mixture of both. Larvae mortality on the treatments was assessed daily, during 48 hours. Means were subjected to analysis of variance and compared by Tukey’s test (P < 0.05). Regression analysis between the different product doses and larval mortality was also performed. Thiamethoxam caused mortality of 100 and 95% to newly-hatched and intermediate-instar larvae, respectively, statistically differing from cyproconazole (50 and 0%, respectively) and from the control (23.2 and 0%, respectively), but not differing from the two products mixture (100 and 92.5%, respectively). Such results point out that newly-hatched larvae are more sensitive than the intermediate-instar ones; that thiamethoxam in the doses here used is toxic to both newly-hatched and intermediate-instar larvae; that cyproconazole in the doses here used is toxic only to newly-hatched larvae; and that cyproconazole, when mixed to thiamethoxam does not improve its toxicity. Linear regression showed that thiamethoxam and its mixture with cyproconazole caused 100% mortality to newly-hatched larvae, and between 80 and 100% and between 90 and 100% to intermediate-instar larvae, respectively, in all tested concentrations. All concentrations were considered high. The thiamethoxam + cyproconazole mixture showed to be promising for the management of R. palmarum and the fungal diseases associated to it in coconut palms.

The juçara palm - Euterpe edulis Mart.

Agro biodiversité et élaboration d'un modèle architectural du palmier dattier au Sahel : cas du Niger / Agro biodiversity and developing a architectural model of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) in the Sahel : case of the southeast of NigerZango, Oumarou 16 December 2016 (has links)
The Sahel is an arid area threatened by climate change that causes great social and environmental vulnerability. Agriculture in Sahel is facing this change to ensure food security for growing populations. The use of plant species with phenological plasticity such as the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), is one of the responses to hard soil and climate conditions to which few plants are adapted. The objective of this thesis is to improve our knowledge on cultural practices, local knowledge around the date palm and genetic and morphological diversity of this species in order to promote sustainable development of oasis agriculture in the Sahel. Thus, we conducted a socioeconomic survey of 30 date palm farmers in 14 villages in Southeastern Niger. Alongside this survey, we collected 113 samples of young leaflets taken from 31 males and 82 females in 19 date palm oasis basins. Our study identified 19 date palm population varieties distinguished on the basis of the fruit color. Date palm has a special double flowering associated with two fruit production seasons in the Sahel. The February-July period is the most productive but early rains limit fruit quality. The evaluation of local knowledge associated with date palm has shown that even if cultural practices are less developed than in the North of the country or in the Maghreb, the profits from the date cultivation significantly contribute to household survival. Furthermore, genetic analysis of date palms in Southeast of Niger has shown that they are a unique group with high genetic diversity. In addition, this germplasm belongs to the Western gene pool and is one of the least introgressed by oriental genetic contributions. The overall genetic analysis revealed a new group in Southern Niger different from that of North Africa and raises the question of its origin. Finally, we have demonstrated the existence of discriminating architectural features in Sahelian date palms. We have developed an architectural model for the calculation of the light interception and spaces necessary for good cohabitation between date palms and crops to optimize agricultural production. Our study showed that the date palm cultivation plays a key role in improving living conditions of the population, fight against hunger and agro-ecological balance in the Sahel. It is a prerequisite to the preservation, valorization and improvement of date palm genetic resources. Finally, the functional architectural model will enable to provide an operational tool for the sustainable management of date palm cultivation in the Sahel.
