The hidden geography of transnational surveillance : social and technological networks around signals intelligence sites

Wood, David January 2001 (has links)
This thesis investigates the hidden geography of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) sites, state military bases concerned with the interception, interpretation and communication of information transmitted through technological systems. Focusing on three such sites in North Yorkshire, Fylingdales, Irton Moor, and primarily, Menwith Hill, it examines their histories and functions, and the discourses of different actors and interest groups about these processes and places. The histories, functions and discursive constructions of SIGINT sites are examined using a theoretical framework of surveillance theory, an emerging transdisciplinary field which understands that surveillance, the monitoring and control of actors, is as important to the analysis of contemporary societies as production. The thesis analyses the sites as part of a hidden geography of transnational surveillance and ultimately weaponry. This geography encompasses not only the places themselves, but also socio-technological networks that stretch across land, air, sea, outer space, and the virtual realm. The thesis is an attempt to trace some of this hidden geography, to assign it history and social meaning, and to subject it to critical interpretation. The thesis adopts a semiotic discourse analysis methodology informed by Actor-Network Theory to analyse the data gathered. The concept of discourse, the whole array of ways in which actors describe themselves, others and the world around them, is central to the way in which the thesis examines the evidence relating to SIGINT sites. This evidence includes officially generated and unofficial written documents, academic and non-academic analysis, visual representations, and interviews with key actors. Because these networks of sites are hidden, it does not mean that they cannot be made visible and their presence in the landscape and in society contested. The semiotic structure of the sites has come under attack from actors who derive meanings from their viewing of these places that are at odds with official state discourse, wherein the necessity of surveillance and secret intelligence are bound up with the foundations of the state and with inter-state relationships. This thesis will examine the whole spectrum of rejection: civil rights and privacy campaigners, peace activists, politicians and parapoliticians, Ufologists and conspiracists. These counter-discourses challenge official discourses in different ways, with differing intensities, and with varied outcomes, from failure to appropriation by the state to success in adjusting or supplanting official discourses and practices. The thesis raises questions about the development of the contemporary capitalist state and its relationship to its people and to other states and peoples. Drawing on recent adaptations of complexity theory to the social sciences, and the work of Foucault, Lyon and Chomsky, the trajectory of societies is considered to be strongly influenced by a dynamic tension between the tendency towards panopticism, a total surveillance society, and opposing tendencies towards individual and collective liberation.

From the Secret Garden to the Panopticon? : changing freedoms and the growing crisis in primary school headteacher recruitment

Hodson, Paul January 2018 (has links)
A headteacher recruitment crisis continues in the primary education sector (Howson & Sprigate, 2011; Rhodes et al., 2008). This research offers a voice for an increasingly marginalised group and synthesises the experiences of 15 primary headteachers, including retired, experienced and new school leaders against the changing educational scenery of four decades. An extended metaphor describing a changing epistemological landscape is utilised (Pascale, 2011), including dramaturgical discourse (Goffman, 1974). The research assesses whether the lived experiences of school leaders evidence a supposed movement away from the ‘freedom’ of the ‘secret garden’ of the pre-National Curriculum era to a time of reducing freedoms for headteachers under a central panoptic gaze (Foucault 1979; Ball 2006) and then to a new ‘supported autonomy’ as suggested by ‘Education Excellence Everywhere’ (DfE, 2016). The thesis assesses the capacity of phenomenological methodology to address the research questions and distinctions are made between approaches to phenomenology. A case is made for ensuring critical rationalism within the methodology and difficulties of attaining ‘epoche’ and ‘phenomenological reduction’ are debated. Findings support the view that there have been significant changes to headship over time. Analysis of these changes does not support the concept of a linear movement from a time of freedom to a landscape defined by Panopticism. The research suggests that a new paradigmatic shift is significantly changing the nature of primary headship with new forms of executive leadership and structures for leadership progression. Recommendations call for a reduction in the frequency of change for school leaders, a simplification of the inspection grading system, provision of clearer pathways to headship and greater support for school leaders as local authority services decline and safeguarding for leaders from the growth of social media abuse. This research offers a unique insight into headship and addresses an identified gap in educational research.

“Where you think no one sees you – do what you want!” : Nineteen Eighty-Four and Upper Secondary School Students’ Perception of Surveillance

Svensson, Tobias January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to juxtapose students’ perceptions of surveillance to the surveillance portrayed in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. By using Michel Foucault’s expansion of Jeremy Bentham’s discussion of the Panopticon, this essay shows that upper secondary school students modify their behaviour, like the characters in the novel, when they are under surveillance. Furthermore, this essay argues that even though there have been vast developments in the field of surveillance since the publication of Nineteen Eighty-Four, similar notions of concern regarding the impact of surveillance on the human psyche are still upheld by students. This essay expands upon current research which points to desensitization regarding the impact of surveillance on younger generations and a gap between current knowledge and necessary knowledge for an informed opinion. By juxtaposing students’ perceptions of surveillance and that portrayed in Nineteen Eighty-Four, this essay provides insights into why this topic could be dealt with in the EFL-classroom as a means of providing students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge on social issues and cultural features which could make them more aware of the cultural impact of constant surveillance.

Oh to be polished : Panopticosm och konsumism i Kate Zambrenos Green Girl

Mirow, Ida January 2018 (has links)

Puzzling Men : Masculinities in The Great Gatsby

Kavanto, Julia January 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines hierarchies that affect a man’s status in the hierarchy between masculinities in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. In a close reading of the novel, the most important concepts in the thesis are hegemonic masculinity and self-surveillance, which both contribute to the idea of a hierarchy between masculinities. While masculinities in modernist novels have been studied, the hierarchies between masculinities have not been well explored in The Great Gatsby. I suggest that the most notable men in the novel, Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, and Tom Buchanan, survey certain features of each other to know their own place in the hierarchy between masculinities. Divided into three sections, this paper first defines Raewyn Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity with the help of David Buchbinder, and then the notion’s connection to Michel Foucault’s theory of panopticism. The paper then studies the hierarchies that affect a man’s position in the hierarchy between masculinities in Gatsby. Lastly, the paper examines how men organise each other into a hierarchy by surveying themselves in contrast with other men’s masculinities.

von Bahder, Felix January 2012 (has links)
Facebook is an Internet based social network as well as a meeting-place for almost a billion people all around the world. Recently the company went public on Nasdaq and it would revile itself to be one of the highest valued introductions the stock market has ever seen. The expectations on Facebook are enormous, yet Facebook is receiving harsh criticism for risking the integrity and satisfaction of its users to please the shareholders demand for return on investment. It is certainly an impressing success story but as we spend an increasing part of our time on the Internet and particularly on Facebook it seems to be a social phenomena worth studying. It is a meeting place where millions of people interact on a daily basis and the question arises of wherein the Facebook lure lies, and whether there might be any side effects to it. Questions regarding whether there could be any reason to break up with ones Facebook are at the centre of this study as well as the question of what happens after dropping out? The aim of this study is to tune in to the stories of young adult users in Sweden who have, at one point or another, chosen to drop out in order to further deepen our understanding of Facebook. It is a study, first of its kind.

Surveillance in Nineteen Eighty-Four : The Dismantling of Privacy in Oceania / Övervakning i 1984 : Nedmonteringen av privatliv i Oceania

Berggren, Amalia January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to analyze how certain elements of panopticism manage to dismantle the notion of privacy in George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. By reading the text through a lens of panopticism, a theory introduced by Jeremy Bentham, I give examples on how the surveillance methods used by the Party share similarities with the system of surveillance within a Panoptic prison, but also in what ways that they differ. In the end, it is obvious that the society of Oceania cannot be considered to be a complete Panopticon, although several elements of panopticism are present within the text and that they dismantle the aspect of privacy in the novel.

CEFAM: Centro EspecÃfico de FormaÃÃo e AperfeiÃoamento ao MagistÃrio: homoerotismo, indisciplina e panoptismo - histÃrias de vida de jovens normalistas em regime integral no Instituto de educaÃÃo do cearà (1992- 1995) / Teaching: homoerocism, indisciplines and panopticism - histories of life of young normalistas in integral regimen in the Instituto de EducaÃÃo do Cearà of it (1992 - 1995)

KÃtia Malena Sampaio Campelo 03 December 2009 (has links)
The objective of this research was to analyze the daily CEFAM with a focus in the practice of homoeroticism, (in)discipline and panopticism life histories of normality that participated in the project of teacher education at the Institute of Education of Cearà between the years 1992-1995. The methodology applied during the research was a survey of the season. I found documents relating to project implementation, regiment disciplinary record of the minutes of unruly behavior and interviews with people involved. Importantly, the survey was conducted by the intersection of documentary sources and oral histories, pointing to a concept of making stories and feelings of conduct, which was told by social workers, who spoke and echoed sentiments of their experiences in their daily cefaniano and their intimacies. Knowing that research work since sieve private and particular, has generated in me researcher several pitfalls and contradictions. The impact of emotions and feelings inherent to intimate relationships that were investigated, led me to choose a record of temporality, based on testimony about a land filled with subjective signs and codes, in which the dilemmas and gave meaning and boundaries projections sought an individual and collective memory in this universe that has been explored. Another method used was discourse analysis supplied by the involved subjects who presented within the space CEFAM a body that is educated, it becomes disciplined releasing devices sexuality managing sexual practices that expand, and at the same time is shaped and remained the mesmas.O CEFAM and all that circulated delimited spaces. Making use of symbols and codes, stating that each one could not do. Separated and instituted. I realized that within cefaniano time and space: value different forms: the study time and time delimited the places permitted and forbidden subjects determined whether or not they pass through them, decided that the time that mattered, pointed out the appropriate forms for all persons to mind (or spend) the time.
