Characterization of Quarry By-Products as a Partial Replacement of Cement in Cementitious Composites

Nguyen, Tu-Nam N. 21 August 2023 (has links)
Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world. Its versatility, strength, and relative ease of construction allow it to be used in the majority of civil infrastructure. However, concrete production plays a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for around 8% of CO2 emissions worldwide. This thesis aims to reduce the demand for cement in concrete construction, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the concrete, by focusing on classifying and determining the effectiveness of seven different quarry by-products as partial replacements of cement. Several methods were utilized in this study to characterize the quarry by-products: particle size distribution, helium pycnometry, X-Ray diffraction, X-Ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, and a modified ASTM C1897 Method A that utilizes isothermal calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. These various methods allowed for the determination of the physical properties (e.g., gradation, specific gravity, and morphology) and the chemical properties (e.g., mineralogy and reactivity in a cementitious system). The quarry by-products were classified as four granites, two limestones, and one greenstone. These quarry by-products were found to be non-pozzolanic and non-hydraulic. However, there are indications that there may be reactions with the various clays and feldspars in the quarry by-products with calcium hydroxide, which suggests a degree of reactivity that is not necessarily pozzolanic or hydraulic. / Master of Science / Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world. Polymérisation en émulsion et en miniémulsion. Influence de la combinaison de stabilisants moléculaires et macromoléculaires et suivi en situ par spectroscopie Raman / Emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization. Influence of the combination of molecular and macromolecular stabilizers and in situ monitoring by Raman spectroscopy

Youssef, Itab 06 December 2012 (has links)
La consommation du monomère et l'apparition du polymère a pu être suivi tout au long de la polymérisation / The aim of this work is to compare processes of emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization. The influence of the combination of molecular and macromolecular stabilizers on the reaction kinetics and particle size distribution are relevant factors in our study. A stabilizer polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (PVA), was synthesized with different degrees of hydrolysis by a direct saponification of polyvinyl acetate. The degree of hydrolysis of this copolymer was characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR). Then, we studied the influence of the composition of a mixture stabilizer [poly (vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (PVA)/sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS)], and particulary the degree of hydrolysis of PVA. The presence of complex (PVA/SDS) influences slightly the kinetic of polymerization. The ability of the complexes to stabilize the particles of latex depends on the degree of hydrolysis of PVA, the lower it is, the more the aggregation is important. Finally, we followed in situ emulsion and miniemulsion polymerizations of styrene by Raman spectroscopy. The exploitation of the spectrum allowed us to assign the different peaks to vibrations of certain bands. The consumption of the monomer and the appearance of the polymer could be followed throughout the polymerization

A poluição atmosférica por material particulado na mineração a céu aberto. / Atmospheric pollution by particulate matter in the open pit mining.

Almeida, Ivo Torres de 20 December 1999 (has links)
Atmospheric pollution aspects were analyzed. Two types of ambients were selected for study: a mining ambient and an urban ambient. To obtain a preliminary evaluation of the quality of the air in these ambients a sampling program was accomplished for each area. Two basic points were studied: the concentration of the total suspended particulates and the chemical and physical characterization of the particulate matter. The concentrations of total suspended particulates were obtained through the use of high volume samplers (Hi-vols). The reference method used was the high volume sampler method, proposed by ABNT through the norm NBR 9547: 97. The physical characterization involved the determination of the size distribution of the suspended particulate matter while the chemical characterization involved the determination of its composition. The analytic techniques used for the characterization of the particulate matter were the X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) for the chemical characterization, and the Low Angle Laser Light Scattering (LALLS) for the physical characterization. Concentration levels for total suspended particulates showed that the mining areas presented higher values than those for urban area. Legal standards were exceeded in the mining area, fact that did not occur in the urban area. Size distributions of the particulate matter demonstrated that the finest fractions were found in larger amounts in the mining areas, while the coarses fractions were present in larger amounts in the urban area. The chemical compositions of the suspended particulate matter in the mining areas were very similar to the compositions of the rocks been mined.

Dynamique des matières en suspension en mer côtière : caractérisation, quantification et interactions sédiments/matière organique / Dynamics of suspended particulate matter in coastal waters : characterization, quantification and interactions sediments / organic matter

Chapalain, Marion 28 January 2019 (has links)
The knowledge of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and turbidity dynamics in coastal waters is essential for studying marine ecosystems. Flocculation/deflocculation processes are crucial mechanisms controlling the dynamics of SPM physical characteristics and thus, the fate of these SPM in the environment. This PhD thesis focuses on the SPM characteristics and their dynamics in coastal waters, from tidal to annual scales, in response to hydrodynamic, hydrological and biological forcing that take place at the interface between estuaries and coastal seas. To this end, optical and acoustic sensors were deployed in situ through 6 field campaigns in 2016, in order to characterize and quantify SPM in the water column, near the mouth of the Seine estuary (France). A critical analysis of LISST-100X measurements in coastal waters is presented. The quantification of uncertainties on SPM concentration measurements is investigated: it highlights the crucial effect of salt retention, and the need for a minimum mass to filter, around 10 mg. A method for estimating an optimal filtration volume based on a reference turbidity measurement is proposed. High frequency measurements show that the dynamics of SPM and median diameter are controlled by the advection-flocculationsedimentation-resuspension cycle. These results allow to classify the factors controlling flocculation processes. Turbulence is identified as the main factor at the semi-diurnal and semi-lunar tidal scales, as the maximum median size of flocs decreases when the tidal currents intensify. At the seasonal scale, the variation of SPM characteristics (size, density, settling velocity) is correlated to the variability of the organic matter (OM) content: in particular, flocculation is enhanced by an increase of the particular OM fraction. The resulting larger and lesser dense flocs are also more resistant to the fragmentation induced by shear. This work also investigates the fractal approach applied to flocs. The fractal dimension variability, calculated by combining in situ data of SPM concentration and particle size distribution, can be associated to variations of the SPM composition, but can also result from uncertainties linked to instrument limitations. The latter are discussed in this PhD thesis. The seasonal variability of SPM characteristics is more pronounced offshore than at the mouth of the Seine estuary. From short-term observations in the Seine Bay and from long-term series in the Belgian coastal zone provided by the RBINS, optical turbidity and acoustic backscatter measurements are combined. They highlight an increase of the acoustic backscatter intensity when mean floc density.

Evaluation of infiltration, run-off and sediment mobilisation using rainfall simulations in the Riebeek-Kasteel Area, Western Cape - South Africa

Joseph Twahirwa January 2010 (has links)

The project was conducted on a small-scale catchment at Goedertrou in the Riebeek- Kasteel district. The focus of this study was to address some of the hydrological processes active in the research catchment, namely infiltration, run-off and sediment mobilisation on different soil types. It was done to investigate the origin of Berg River pollutants. To answer the overall question about what influence the natural salt load of the Berg River, a number of subprojects have been identified, one of which is to understand the hydrological processes in the soil mantle and vadose zone. Hence, the study aimed to answer the research questions mentioned and discussed in section 1.3 of Chapter 1. Considering the results, it could be suggested that decayed root systems from the rows of plants, soil cracks, small channels and openings created by small animals, as well as slope orientation and, therefore, soil composition, all played a major role in influencing the ability of the soil to absorb the simulated rainfall. In this study, the factors that influenced run-off are micro topography, soil moisture, root system, animal activities in soil profile, soil crack dimensions and the hydraulic conductivity. The main factors that played a major role to influence sediments mobilisation are strongly believed to be the micro topography within the ring, slope gradient and length, vegetation cover and rainfall-simulation intensity. After using different techniques, the results show that farmers must be aware that with storm rainfall, particles smaller than 65 &mu / m are subject to mobilisation. It is important to let land-users know that they need proper and appropriate methods for land-use.

Schallspektroskopische Charakterisierung von submikronen Emulsionen / Charakterystyka koloidalnych emulsji dzwiekowa spektroskopia / Characterization of Submicron Emulsions by Ultrasonic Spectroscopy

Babick, Frank 08 March 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The ultrasonic spectroscopy is one of few measurement methods applicable to the online characterization of disperse systems with regard to particle size distribution. However, its application in industrial practise is restricted to a rather low number of measurement tasks and material systems. In particular it is hardly used for the particle size analysis of submicron emulsions. This thesis therefore aims to the evaluation of the ultrasonic spectroscopy regarding its applicability to the online characterization of submicron emulsions. Main issues of the thesis are the modelling of sound attenuation in dense particle systems, the estimation on the influence that surfactant layers exert on sound attenuation, the resolution at which size distribution can be measured, the sensitivity of calculated size distributions to model parameters (particle concentration and material properties) and the analysis of measured attenuation spectra by unknown model parameters. The meanining of these issues are illustrated for typical characterization tasks.

Katalytische Partikeloxidation im Kontext von Harnstoff-SCR und Partikelkonfektionierung / Catalytic Particle Oxidation in Context of Urea SCR and Particulate Confectioning

Liebsch, Stephan 23 March 2005 (has links) (PDF)

Biomass burning : particle emissions, characteristics, and airborne measurements

Wardoyo, Arinto Yudi January 2007 (has links)
Biomass burning started to attract attention since the last decade because of its impacts on the atmosphere and the environmental air quality, as well as significant potential effects on human health and global climate change. Knowledge of particle emission characteristics from biomass burning is crucially important for the quantitative assessment of the potential impacts. This thesis presents the results of study aimed towards comprehensive characterization of particle emissions from biomass burning. The study was conducted both under controlled laboratory conditions, to quantify the particle size distribution and emission factors by taking into account various factors which may affect the particle characteristics, and in the field, to investigate biomass burning processes in the real life situations and to examine vertical profile of particles in the atmosphere. To simulate different environmental conditions, a new technique has been developed for investigating particle emissions from biomass burning in the laboratory. As biomass burning may occur in a field at various wind speeds and burning rates, the technique was designed to allow adjustment of the flow rates of the air introduced into the chamber, in order to control burning under different conditions. In addition, the technique design has enabled alteration of the high particle concentrations, allowing conducting measurements with the instrumentations that had the upper concentration limits exciding the concentrations characteristic to the biomass burning. The technique was applied to characterize particle emissions from burning of several tree species common to Australian forests. The aerosol particles were characterized in terms of size distribution and emission factors, such as PM2.5 particle mass emission factor and particle number emission factor, under various burning conditions. The characteristics of particles over a range of burning phases (e.g., ignition, flaming, and smoldering) were also investigated. The results showed that particle characteristics depend on the type of tree, part of tree, and the burning rate. In particular, fast burning of the wood samples produced particles with the CMD of 60 nm during the ignition phase and 30 nm for the rest of the burning process. Slow burning of the wood samples produced large particles with the CMD of 120 nm, 60 nm and 40 nm for the ignition, flaming and smoldering phases, respectively. The CMD of particles emitted by burning the leaves and branches was found to be 50 nm for the flaming phase and 30 nm for the smoldering phase, under fast burning conditions. Under slow burning conditions, the CMD of particles was found to be between 100 to 200 nm for the ignition and flaming phase, and 50 nm for the smoldering phase. For fast burning, the average particle number emission factors were between 3.3 to 5.7 x 1015 particles/kg for wood and 0.5 to 6.9 x 1015 particles/kg for leaves and branches. The PM2.5 emission factors were between 140 to 210 mg/kg for wood and 450 to 4700 mg/kg for leaves and branches. For slow burning conditions, the average particle number emission factors were between 2.8 to 44.8 x 1013 particles/kg for wood and 0.5 to 9.3 x 1013 particles/kg for leaves and branches, and the PM2.5 emissions factors were between 120 to 480 mg/kg for wood and 3300 to 4900 mg/kg for leaves and branches. The field measurements were conducted to investigate particle emissions from biomass burning in the Northern Territory of Australia over dry seasons. The results of field studies revealed that diameters of particles in ambient air emissions were within the size range observed during laboratory investigations. The laboratory measurements found that the particles released during the controlled burning were of a diameter between 30 and 210 nm, depending on the burning conditions. Under fast burning conditions, smaller particles were produced with a diameter in the range of 30 to 60 nm, whilst larger particles, with a diameter between 60 nm and 210 nm, were produced during slow burning. The airborne field measurements of biomass particles found that most of the particles measured under the boundary layer had a CMD of (83 ± 13) nm during the early dry season (EDS), and (127 ± 6) nm during the late dry season (LDS). The characteristics of ambient particles were found to be significantly different at the EDS and the LDS due to several factors including moisture content of vegetation, location of fires related to the flight paths, intensity of fires, and burned areas. Specifically, the investigations of the vertical profiles of particles in the atmosphere have revealed significant differences in the particle properties during early dry season and late dry season. The characteristics of particle size distribution played a significant role in these differences.
