This thesis investigates the two major conflicting modes of interpretation applied to Mo Yan’s literary texts diachronically and synchronically in order to reveal both the aesthetic imperative and the liberating force of the British and North American literary centers in receiving literature from the periphery. After an introduction to the centers’ disparate responses to the paradigmatic shift of the local Chinese literary trend in the 1980s, the thesis continues with a theoretical discussion on reader-response theory and the uneven power relations between the literary center and the periphery. Jauss’s concept of horizon of expectation and Fish’s interpretive community are adopted to stress openness in interpretation while Casanova’s conceptualization of the world republic of letters provides the framework to study the competition among interpretive communities for the legitimacy of their respective interpretation. The study of the press reception of Mo Yan focuses on the ongoing shift of horizon of expectation from the dominating political and representational mode of interpretation to one that stresses the literary and fictional nature of literature. The study shows that the imperative in the reception of Mo Yan is the extension of the Western cultural hegemony sustained by an Orientalist dichotomy. The academic promotion in the public sphere, however, shows critics’ effort to subvert such domination by suggesting an alternative mode that brings the Chinese literary context to bear on the interpretation. In addition to this, Mo Yan’s strategic negotiation with the dominating mode of reception is analysed in my close reading of POW!. At the end of the thesis, I call for general readers to raise the awareness of the hegemonic tendency of any prevailing mode of interpretation. By asserting a certain distance, readers enable the openness in interpretation and hence possible communication among different communities.

Dans la mesure où l’écriture n’est pas un médium qui parvient à véritablement alimenter ou à s’inscrire dans mon travail, je crains que ce texte soit extrêmement éloigné de mes créations, « le langage constituant une barrière entre le réel et nous, ne peut être aussi spontané que l’expérience elle-même ». La présente tentative de parler, non pas directement de ma recherche en arts visuels, mais de ce qui l’anime et de son aboutissement, est ainsi paradoxale. L’intuition qui guide mes réalisations, l’art et l’expérience de la création sont « incompatibles avec la certitude » et la structure du langage. Par les arts, je ne tente pas de faire état d’une idée, mais d’un monde sensible, d’expériences subjectives que je chercher à partager. Ainsi, bien que l’on voudrait que ce texte accompagne une exposition, il est davantage le récit sommaire de mon parcours universitaire, accompagné de quelques réflexions qui l’auront ponctué, que la théorisation d’une démarche artistique. D’ailleurs, au moment d’écrire ces lignes, aucun des éléments de mon exposition de fin de maîtrise n’a encore pris forme. Croyant que l’art et la création s’enracinent dans l’écart entre l’idée de départ et le résultat, je me permettrai simplement d’énoncer et de décrire les prémisses d’une installation qui fera office d’exposition de fin de maîtrise.

Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) has achieved considerable critical and commercial success among a global English readership. Breaking into the US market, which has an important mediating role for the international circulation of texts, is a rare feat for a non-Anglophone author and requires some explanation. In the spirit of Pascale Casanova’s international criticism, this paper looks at Bolaño’s work as world literature and his persona as a world-literature figure against which theories on the subject can be measured. Furthermore, I will partly use his posthumous novel, 2666, as an example of a work that arises out of this process of becoming-world-literature. The success of Bolaño more or less conforms to the main theories of world literature (Casanova, Moretti, Thomsen), but it also reveals interesting mismatches and problematic aspects that show a need to update existing theories.

Adapting literature from a cultural context to another is the main theme of my master's thesis. The aim is to determine how publishing houses adapt a book from a different cultural context to their own, and if there are any specific marketing choices being made during the publishing process.The thesis highlights two authors, Sara Stridsberg from Sweden and Silke Scheuermann from Germany. Interviews have been made with the publishers, editors and translators of the translated novels. One of the main themes is to be able to showcase differences between the Swedish and the German publishing business and their particular cultural characteristics in working with translated novels. I have found that the brand of a publishing house is important when making publishing decisions. For larger publishing houses, the economical capital is of importance, and for smaller publishing houses the cultural capital tends to be of a higher value. The book market is becoming more defined by the economy of attention and economization of culture, which is showing in all different aspects of the business; publishing houses, newspapers and agents are all adapting towards a more economic focus.

Les représentations graphiques des problèmes de santé mentale peuvent être le reflet des considérations de la société à l’égard des personnes atteintes de ces types de troubles. Les artistes ont un rôle à jouer dans les perceptions que l’on peut en avoir car ils reflètent les conceptions d’une société donnée, à une époque donnée. Certains artistes prennent position et cherchent à modifier les perceptions sociales, en contribuant par leurs actions ou leurs créations à la déstigmatisation de ces types de maladies. Cette volonté est au cœur de ce mémoire. Dans un premier temps, cette recherche propose des études de cas de représentations graphiques des problèmes de santé mentale tirés de l’histoire de l’art, de la littérature jeunesse et du roman graphique. Lescas de figure tirés de l’histoire de l’art sont réunis autour du thème de la folie, lesquels permettent de comprendre certains stéréotypes encore présents aujourd’hui. Quant aux exemples tirés du livre graphique plus près de notre époque, on retrouve une volonté de combattre les préjugés. Dans le livre, la maladie se raconte à travers des pathologies graphiques ou des somatographies graphiques, soit de l’intérieur ou bien du point de vue du proche-aidant. Dans un second temps, cette recherche propose un travail de recherche-création qui a pris la forme d’un livre à mi-chemin entre le livre d’artiste et le roman graphique, lequel porte le titre Une année sans lumière. Le présent mémoire rend compte de ces deux aspects théoriques et pratiques qui s’interconnectent. L’analyse du corpus ainsi que le travail de recherche-création ont permis d’explorer et de mieux comprendre une forme d’imaginaire graphique des problèmes de santé mentale en contribuant à les déstigmatiser.

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the organizational culture in three local companies of the transport corporation. The analysis is carried out with the aim to map the organizational culture in the local companies. At the beginning of the work is described theory, which is composed from the organizational culture, models of individual organizational cultures and elements that may affect the strength of the organizational culture and others. In the empirical part are analysed the data obtained by various methods of diagnostics organizational culture. These include observation, interviewing and analysis the documents of company. At the end of this thesis are found the recommendations for the company.

Ce mémoire propose une lecture de la notion de l’« haptique », issue du contexte pictural de l’ouvrage Francis Bacon : Logique de la sensation du philosophe français Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), appliquée à un paradigme, non plus visuel, mais sonore. Ainsi, la notion de « musique moléculaire », codéveloppée par Deleuze et Félix Guattari (1930-1992) dans Capitalisme et schizophrénie 2 : Mille plateaux, est invoquée. Dans la perspective d’une haptique musicale, il se dégage des parallèles étroits entre les différents concepts en lien avec l’haptique de Bacon et la conception deleuzo-guattarienne du moléculaire. Structuré en deux parties, ce mémoire tâchera, dans un premier temps, de fournir un aperçu général de l’haptique et d’en explorer les principaux éléments picturaux tout en proposant de manière continue des liens avec la musique, notamment par le biais de témoignages des compositeur·rice·s français·e·s Pascale Criton (née en 1954) et Pascal Dusapin (né en 1955). Dans un second temps, ce mémoire s’emploiera à établir des correspondances entre l’haptique deleuzien relevant du paradigme visuel baconien et la conception deleuzo-guattarienne de la musique moléculaire. Il en ressortira que les notions de « devenir », d’« indiscernabilité » et de « modèle analogique » constituent des principes communs au figural et à la musique moléculaire, s’en dégageant alors une perspective esthétique haptique plus globale qui relève, autant dans le paradigme pictural que musical, d’une « logique de la sensation ». / This thesis propose a lecture of the notion of ‘haptic’, taken from the pictorial context of Francis Bacon : Logique de la sensation, by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), apply to a paradigm that is no longer visual, but audible. The notion of ‘molecular music’, co-developed by Deleuze and Félix Guattari (1930-1992) in Capitalisme et schizophrénie 2 : Mille plateaux, is invoked. From the perspective of musical haptic, close parallels emerge between various concepts related to Bacon’s haptic and Deleuzo-Guattarian’s conception of the molecular. Structured in two parts, this dissertation will first provide a general overview of the notion of ‘haptic’ and explore its main pictural elements, while continuously proposing links with music, notably through the testimonies of French composers Pascale Criton (b. 1954) and Pascal Dusapin (b. 1955). Secondly, this dissertation will seek to establish correspondences between the Deleuzian haptic of the Baconian visual paradigm and the Deleuzo-Guattarian conception of molecular music. It will show that the notions of ‘becoming’, ‘indiscernibility’ and ‘analogical model’ are principles common to the figural and to molecular music, giving rise to a more global haptic aesthetic perspective which, in both the pictorial and musical paradigms, stems from a ‘logic of sensation’.

Dans cette thèse intitulée « L’invraisemblable dans la représentation réaliste. Étude de Dernier amour de Christian Gailly, de Gabrielle au bois dormant de Denyse Delcourt, de La maison des temps rompus de Pascale Quiviger et de Tarmac de Nicolas Dickner », nous proposons une analyse des problèmes de vraisemblance pragmatique et empirique que nous rencontrons dans certains romans réalistes contemporains. Le premier chapitre est consacré à un retour historique sur le courant réaliste depuis son apparition au XIXe siècle jusqu'à notre époque actuelle. Il contient aussi une synthèse des principes théoriques des concepts de réalisme et de vraisemblance qui sont des concepts très anciens. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous proposons une analyse des problèmes de vraisemblance liés aux deux types de narration homodiégétique et hétérodiégétique omnisciente qui existent dans les romans retenus pour notre recherche. La première partie de ce chapitre est réservée à l’étude des problèmes identitaires du « je » qui parle dans les récits alors que les deux autres parties sont consacrées à l’étude des points de vue interne et omniscient qui se trouvent déstabilisés dans les romans choisis. Quant au troisième chapitre, ce dernier est réservé à l’analyse des invraisemblances empiriques qui envahissent nos romans. Ces invraisemblances sont liées à la présence débordante de certains procédés et stratégies narratifs qui sont répertoriés et étudiés dans la première partie, puis à l’apparition de certains phénomènes ou personnages incroyables dans les histoires racontées. Ces phénomènes et personnages invraisemblables constituent l’objet des analyses de la deuxième partie de ce chapitre. Grâce à l’analyse des ces invraisemblances empiriques, nous pourrons entamer la réflexion sur le rapport du « je » au réel qui l’entoure. Ce rapport qui est différent dans chacun des romans étudiés révèle les nouvelles conceptions du réel contemporain que cherchent à transmettre nos écrivains.
