Interpersonal Dynamics in Team Leadership and the Tenure of Youth Pastors

Walker, Wendy January 2016 (has links)
The research presented in the following pages explores interpersonal dynamics in church leadership which may adversely affect the tenure of Youth Pastors in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA). Since 2006, eight resolutions passed by the Conference of the MCSA have noted a concern around the appointment of Youth Pastors. When Youth Pastors depart from their positions it can have an adverse effect on the young people, the Youth Pastor and the ability of the church to be faithful in youth ministry. Literature supports a long tenure for sustainable youth ministry. A sample group of ten participants was selected and interviewed. The average tenure of the sample group was calculated; compairsons were drawn between those who served for longer and shorter than the average tenure. The aim of the research was to provide information to the MCSA that might reduce the problem of disrupted Youth Pastor tenure by determining the factors contributing to departure. Both the literature review and the empirical research demonstrated that the Youth Pastor’s relationship with the minister is critical to a positive job experience. Some of the factors contributing to negative interpersonal relationships include an autocratic minister, a lack of support and a church leadership that lacks insight into youth ministry. The majority of the sample expressed a largely unmet expectation that their minister should provide them with spiritual and personal support. They commonly experienced conflict with their minister, particularly when one minister left and a new minister arrived. Most Youth Pastors who underwent negative departures cited conflict with the minister as a primary factor in their departure. However, there were others who experienced similarly difficult interpersonal dynamics, yet chose to remain in their positions. Thus, the question of why Youth Pastors leave was slowly overshadowed by a new question which seeks to understand the factors that contribute to Youth Pastors choosing to remain. The empirical research suggested that the qualities more frequently observed among long tenure participants were (1) a clearly articulated call (2) a love for the youth (3) a mentor outside the local church and (4) a sense of responsibility to fulfil a vision for the youth ministry. The theory of action to be presented to the MCSA involves a more rigorous discernment process for prospective Youth Pastors, the provision of a wider web of relationships for Youth Pastors as well as the youth themselves, mandatory mentoring for all Youth Pastors and a platform for the Youth Pastor to receive feedback. / Dissertation (MA Theology)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Practical Theology / MA Theology / Unrestricted

A practical theological reflection on the office of the career youth pastor

Aziz, Garth January 2016 (has links)
In recent years the state of youth work, and more specifically the professional youth worker, has been on the forefront of discussion and concern in South Africa and has been the focus of the Presidency, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the Commonwealth, and select South African universities. Statistics (Stats SA 2011) discloses that more than 58.5% of the South African population are youth that is aged 1 through 35 (National Youth Policy of South Africa 2008:11) and is, therefore, an important area of interest. In a similar manner, there is increasing discussion and concern in the area of youth ministry in the church. In utilising a case study of the Baptist Union of Southern Africa (BUSA), it is reflected at the annual assembly of churches and its publications that indeed there is an ever increasing concern regarding its youth. The concern for the youth ministry centres on the efficacy of this area of ministry as we observe the exodus of youth from the local church. This particular study has its focus on the youth ministry and specifically the topic of the office of the career youth pastor in an attempt to address the concern of effective ministry to youth as well as addressing the concern of the professional youth worker. This research posits that there is no clear and intentional theological articulation for the office of the career youth pastor. Furthermore, the study will inquire how the office of the career youth pastor will address the problem regarding the professional youth worker as well as an effective ministry to and with youth in the church. This research, therefore, will endeavour to address the theological basis for the call and vocation of the career youth pastor, the cultural as well as the developmental needs of youth in supporting the notion for the career youth pastor, and the purpose of the career youth pastor, by reflecting on the practices and normative texts of the BUSA as a case study through the empirical research of qualitative interviewing. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Practical Theology / PhD / Unrestricted

Pastoral Transformational Leadership and Church Human Service Provision

Allen, Debra Harding 01 January 2017 (has links)
As the poverty rate continues to rise, many individuals seek assistance to help meet basic needs. Previous research has indicated that churches provide a social safety net for those in need, yet some churches choose not to become human service providers. The purpose of this multicase study was to explore how pastoral transformational leadership influences a church's decision to become a provider of human services among African American pastors and churches. Transformational leadership provided the theoretical framework for this study. The purposeful sample included bounded systems of 5 pastors and their respective churches. Each case was bound by race, location, and denomination. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used as a tool to identify each pastor's leadership style, and interviews were used to determine how the church becomes a human service provider. Interviews were transcribed, inductively coded, and analyzed to identify recurring themes. The results of this research indicated that the transformational pastor is influential in all aspects of the church's human service initiatives. The transformational pastor plays a key role in determining whether the church becomes involved in human service initiatives, and he or she remains involved throughout initiation, implementation, and sustainability. Findings from this study may influence pastoral leadership training and provide a framework for churches and communities who wish to help meet the social needs in their communities. If churches consistently address poverty-related issues, they can address the underlying problems associated with it. This can result in a decrease in the poverty rate over time. This contribution can potentially help decrease the rate of poverty in the community.

Working from the theory paradigm of role "symbolic interactionist", taking advantage the sociological methodology of the Jean-Paul Willaime and transplanting these resources to the sociological Brazilian Protestantism's reality, this study showed that during the historical course, since the insertion of Protestant mission in Brazil, even the most significant change in the Brazilian religious field with the emergence of neo-pentecostalism, Protestant Ministers connected to brazilian historical religious denominations suffered a gradual loss or restriction of their social importance. The study also found that this loss or restriction in their social locus generates a natural response in order to reconquer their condition of social plenitude. This natural response interposes as the vital sociological problem discussed in this research: what are the possible outputs for legitimating the Brazilian Protestant Minister. In this we meet the principal point of the messianic thought of Isaiah. It is important to observe that the isaian messianism comes from the conception of messiah that comes to govern from the right and justice, and, thus, to establish the peace. The messianism presented for this prophet don t part of the spheres of the kingdom power, but of the small and fragile persons of the society, endowed with the spirit of Yahweh. It has to be distinguished that the prophecy of Isaiah is a watershed with respect to the messianic theology in the Kingdom of the South, especially the prophets after him. In Isaiah, we meet the rupture with the ruling classes and a warlike messianism. The proposal of this prophet points to a fragile messiah, but that is moved by the blow, by the movement of Yahweh and his action. And thus, Isaiah opens the doors for understanding a poor messiah, as Zechariah recognize, a messiah in service, presented for the Second-Isaiah, or who knows a shepherd messiah, as considered by Micah and Ezekiel and received well for the traditions of the first century (Jo 10,10). The messiah in Isaiah have names and adjectives : Imanuel, child, root of Jessé, but do not have face, do not have geographic localization, is not fit in the messianic type since the davidic of Jerusalem. These messiah can be found at any time with any face, by that is important a new reading messianic presented in texts of the current Christianity. Many of inspired them in the isaian prophecy of 8º. century B.C.

The crisis in church leadership and the Bible : addressing issues in the practical theology of church leadership through the exegesis of selected portions of the Epistle to Titus

Raubenheimer, Jacques Eugene 23 November 2010 (has links)
The 21st century is marked by the widespread influence of post-modernism and the relativisation of truth. As such, confidence in the truth of Scripture is flagging, and nowhere is this felt more, ironically, than in the appointment and the working of pastors of the Word of God. Movements such as the historical Jesus research abroad, and the so-called “New Reformation” in South Africa, are calling into question long-held tenets of the Christian faith, as well as the inerrant nature of the Bible. The failing trust in the Scripture has also led to a diminished reliance on exposition of the Bible. This again relates to the training of pastors, as theological training today is marked by greater disdain for biblical subjects and a threatening rift between practical theology and biblical exposition. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the trend might be countered, by applying an exposition of portions of the book of Titus relevant to the selection, appoint, and task of the pastor, to the current situation as it exists today. The exposition focused on the following excerpts from the epistle: 1:1–2:8, 3:12–15. The pastor was discussed as the exemplification of the Church elder, but it was also noted that all that applies to the pastor, equally applies to all elders of the Church. Emphasis was laid on the character of the pastor, the biblical requirements for the ministry, the appointment of pastors, the biblically mandated task of the pastor, the role of the pastor in defending and teaching sound doctrine, and how the teaching of the pastor is to filter down through the congregation, through the older men to the younger men, the older women to the younger women, and how a general ethos of relational ministry is to pervade the mindset of the whole Church (pastor and congregants) in all that they do. Through the exposition, it is seen that biblical exposition is still relevant, and has a role to play in all spheres of life and theology, including practical theological concerns such as the appointment and task of pastors. / Dissertation (MA(Theol))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

O lugar do pastor jubilado na igreja

Among the possible subjects met the life of the pastor who after years of studies, provision of services to the community and society and financial remuneration for their activity is seen in 70 years exonerated. With the dismissal is mandatory as the life of the Presbyterian minister? This dissertation aims to analyze the place occupied by the Presbyterian minister in the church after his retirement, still analyzing the conflicts arising in the social and property after retirement. To do so, use the deductive approach starting from the literature of the subject in various scientific sources, as well as the orders of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. The intention with this paper to present all the issues related to the topic and present a dignified solution to life after the retirement of the pastor and the same current form given the current increase in life expectancy and quality of life of human beings humans, thus respecting the personal rights of the elderly. This dissertation examines the factual situation of the Presbyterian minister's retirement age of 70. This fact is true throughout the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, but the consequences in social life and heritage of this fact is rarely discussed. The life of a Presbyterian pastor is ruled by his studies and applying them to the community in the teachings of the various possible ways. After years of complicity pastor knows that the age of 70 will be retired, but currently have 70 years is quite different than having 70 years 10, 20 or more years ago. The index of life expectancy increases every year in Brazil and in most countries of the world, moreover, the quality of life is getting better due to greater knowledge of society and the practice of healthy attitudes and medical studies. All these factors lead to questioning the need for retirement at 70, since many times the pastor at that age these days can be at the peak of his knowledge and teachings to the community. However, this is the reality, the jubilation today significantly alter the social aspects of life and property of the pastor. The pastor takes a while in active social life according to their duties and obligations, but if you see a sudden you have to redo their activities, their routine tasks and duties may have several results that will be analyzed in this research. Moreover, as the pastor of retirement when his life has affected the equity principle, unless the same together with the Church to develop a retirement plan. These aspects of extreme importance for the correct and dignified conduct of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, and other related is to be addressed in this work with the intuit to solve this major issue surrounding the current Presbyterian minister.

The goal is to get them to heaven, but until then we want them to have it better” : A qualitative study of social work in the free churches of Sweden

Lindman, Simon, Jägenstedt, Emma January 2021 (has links)
This study examines the motivations and goals of Swedish free church pastors engaging in social work, as well as how pastors view their churches’ social commitment in relation to public social work. Seven semi structured interviews were conducted with eight pastors from six congregations in two counties in southern Sweden. The empirical data gathered was processed with thematical analysis, from which six themes were identified: Faith as a motivation, Practical Christianity, Denominational heritage, A better world, Spreading the faith and A compliment to the public sector. The results of the study were analyzed with Antonovsky’s theory of salutogenesis, with a focus on the concept Sense of coherence. The theory aims to explain why people stay healthy even though they meet hardship in life. The conclusions of the study are that the pastors are motivated by their faith in the Bible and in Jesus and how he met with people. The pastors’ goals with social commitments are to make a better world and for people to come to faith in Jesus. In relation to the public sector the pastors regard themselves as a compliment. /
Utfördes online via Zoom
