Illuminating the Medieval Hunt: Power and Performance in Gaston Fébus' Le livre de chasse

abstract: Vivid illuminations of the aristocratic hunt decorate Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS. fr. 616, an early fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript of Le livre de chasse composed by Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix and Viscount of Béarn (1331-1391 C.E.), in 1389. Gilded miniatures visualize the medieval park, an artificial landscape designed to facilitate the ideal noble chase, depicting the various methods to pursue, capture, and kill the prey within as well as the ritual dismemberment of animals. Medieval nobles participated in the social performance of the hunt to demonstrate their inclusion in the collective identity of the aristocracy. The text and illuminations of Le livre de chasse contributed to the codification of the medieval noble hunt and became integral to the formation of cultural memory which served as the foundation for the establishment of the aristocracy as different from other parts of society in the Middle Ages. This study contributes new information through examination of previously ignored sources as well as new analysis through application of critical theoretical frameworks to interpret the manuscript as a meaning-making object within the visual culture of the Middle Ages and analysis of the illuminations reveals the complexities surrounding one of the most important acts of performance for the medieval elite. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation History and Theory Of Art 2017

In accordance with the latest researches this Diploma Thesis is not only focused on the general development of individual collections but deals with investigation of individual aspects of a particular example. The picture collection that was used for this purpose can be found within the yard of Humprecht Jan Černín from Chudenice and dates from the second half of the 17th century. Primarily, the Diploma Thesis strives to get hold of those aspects that influenced the relation of Humprecht Jan Černín to fine art, mainly in term of economic and social background including his personality traits. It concentrates on such events that awakened his interest in fine arts, for example education, effort to improve and consolidate his social position or effort to continue in the tradition of his ancestors.

Esta tese trata das relações de poder em Roraima, examinando a influência política e econômica de Boa Vista sobre quatro municípios do interior, aqui limitados a Alto Alegre, Amajari, Cantá e Pacaraima. O marco temporal da pesquisa abrange as eleições municipais de 2004, 2008 e 2012, sendo seu objetivo estudar o fenômeno das transferências eleitorais de Boa Vista para os citados municípios do interior, analisando a probabilidade dessas transferências estarem influenciando no resultado das eleições, em prejuízo da legitimidade de escolha eleitoral. Para investigar as hipóteses, utilizou-se metodologia que a um só tempo calcula e comprova a possibilidade de prefeitos e vereadores estarem sendo eleitos com o apoio de eleitores domiciliados em Boa Vista, situação que forma no interior os chamados “currais eleitorais”; e, ainda, mede a compreensão desse fenômeno pelos cidadãos da capital e do interior. Foi assim traçado o “perfil do eleitor roraimense”, por um survey ou pesquisa de opinião, que estima suas preferências; seu entendimento sobre a supremacia política de Boa Vista em relação aos demais municípios selecionados; avalia também a impressão do eleitor sobre a atuação da polícia eleitoral, dos partidos políticos, da justiça eleitoral e das demais instituições que participam da fiscalização eleitoral, bem como sua opinião sobre aspectos integrantes da cultura política, formada no Estado de Roraima a partir da interação cultural de migrantes oriundos de diversas regiões brasileiras, principalmente dos contingentes dos estados do Norte, Nordeste e Sul do Brasil, cujos traços dominantes em Roraima encontram-se associados aos conceitos do personalismo, clientelismo e favoritismo. / This thesis deals with the relations of power in Roraima, examining the political and economic influence of Boa Vista on four municipalities of the rural area, here limited to Alto Alegre, Amajari, Cantá and Pacaraima. To investigate the hypothesis a methodology that, at the same time, calculates and shows the possibility of mayors and aldermen being elected with the support of electors residing in Boa Vista, situation that formed in the rural area, the so-called "electoral corrals"; and, yet, measures the understanding of this phenomenon by the citizens of the capital and interior. It was thus mapped out the "Roraimense voter profile ", for a survey or poll, which estimates their preferences; his understanding of the political supremacy of Boa Vista compared to other selected municipalities; it also evaluates the impression of the voter on the performance of electoral police, political parties, Electoral Justice and other institutions that participate in election supervision, as well as their views on aspects of political culture, formed in the State of Roraima from the cultural interaction of migrants from various regions of Brazil, mainly of the quotas of the States of North, Northeast and South Brazil, whose dominant traits in Roraima are associated with the concepts of personalism, patronage and favoritism.

Do gibi ao livro: as traduções de Watchmen no Brasil / From comic to book: the Brazilian translations of Watchmen

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar como as quatro traduções de Watchmen foram influenciadas pelos diferentes estágios de consolidação da graphic novel no sistema de histórias em quadrinhos do Brasil e pela aproximação deste com o sistema literário. Defende-se a ideia que as histórias em quadrinhos constituem seu próprio sistema e que no Brasil as traduções ocupam o centro do sistema, sendo responsáveis pela introdução de novos modelos de narrativas gráficas. A minissérie Watchmen foi lançada nos EUA entre 1986-1987 em 12 volumes pela editora DC, sendo logo depois reunida em um único livro, com o rótulo de graphic novel. No Brasil, Watchmen seguiu um caminho editorial similarcom as traduções refletindo as transformações do mercado nacional de quadrinhos dos últimos trinta anos em direção à consolidação de um público adulto mais exigente e a migração das vendas em bancas para as livrarias, de forma semelhante ao ocorrido nos EUA na década de 1980. Além disso, este estudo demonstra o peculiar papel de autonomia na escolha de estratégias tradutórias desempenhado pelo tradutor de três das versões brasileiras. O corpus deste estudo é composto dos seis números da edição da Editora Abril (1988), dos doze volumes lançados pela mesma editora em 1999, dos quatro livros da edição da Via Lettera (2005-2006) e a da Edição Definitiva lançada pela Panini Books, em 2011. / This study aims to demonstrate how the consolidation stage of the graphic novel in the Brazilian comic system and the relation between the comic system and the literary system influenced the four Brazilian translations of Watchmen. The ideia defended is that comics have their own system, and that translation occupies the center of the system in Brazil, being responsible for introducing new models of graphic narratives. Watchmen was released in the USA from 1986 to 1987 as a 12-issue miniseries by DC Comics, and not long after was collected into a single book under the label of graphic novel. In Brazil, Watchmen has followed a similar publishing path and the translations reflect the transformations of the national comic book market in the last three decades towards establishing a market for adults and more demanding readers, and to migrate sales from news agencies to bookstores, in a similar way to what happened in the US comic market from the 1980s. This study also demonstrates the peculiar autonomy held by the translator regarding to translations strategies in three of the Brazilian editions. The corpus of this study is composed of 6-issues miniseries published by Editora Abril (1988-1989), 12-issues also released by Editora Abril (1999), the 4 books by Via Lettera publishing house (2005-2006) and the Absolute Edition (2011) by Panini Books.

Este trabalho analisa como se comportam as personagens femininas do romance Iaiá Garcia, a partir das suas escolhas amorosas, no âmbito do sistema de favor e cooptação do Segundo Reinado. Para tanto, a análise do estado amoroso em contrapartida aos valores da sociedade clientelista ganha destaque neste trabalho, permitindo compreender a oposição entre as duas principais figuras femininas do romance, Estela e Iaiá Garcia. Como o proposto pelo narrador, as duas personagens simbolizam o passado e o futuro do comportamento social em meados do século XIX e, assim, servem como meio para a discussão, no romance, das relações afetivas intrinsecamente ligadas à questão matrimonial no decurso histórico do Segundo Reinado. Esta análise mostra que essa oposição é uma fórmula encontrada pelo escritor para desacreditar o valor do amor como um sentimento imanente ao homem. / This research analyzes the behaviors of female characters in the novel Iaiá Garcia, by looking at their choices related to love issues, within the system of mutual favors and cooptation prevalent in Brazil during the Second Empire period. A contrastive analysis between love and social patronage values is carried out in order to understand the opposition between the two main female characters in the novel, Estela and Iaiá Garcia. According to the novels narrator, these characters represent the past and the future of the social behavior in the middle of the nineteenth century, and, thus, they are used as a means to discuss, within the novel, affective relations inextricably linked to issues of marriage during the history of the Second Empire in Brazil. This analysis shows that that opposition is a way used by Machado de Assis to deny the value of love as an inherent human feeling.

O projeto de extensionismo surgiu, no Brasil, devido a uma iniciativa privada bem-sucedida firmada em 1948 entre a Associação Internacional Americana (AIA) — controlada por Nelson Rockefeller — e o governo do Estado de Minas. Logo em 1956 o extensionismo virou uma política nacional, com a criação da Associação Brasileira de Crédito e Assistência Rural-ABCAR. Durante essa trajetória, a extensão rural foi projetada como o veículo de propagação de técnicas agrícolas e sanitárias aos pequenos produtores. Ressalta-se, no trabalho, a relação entre a ABCAR e as agremiações do patronato rural brasileiro, sobretudo a Confederação Nacional da Agricultura (CNA) e a Sociedade Nacional de Agricultura (SNA). Nos anos 70, no que se convencionou chamar de “modernização” da agricultura, os objetivos da ABCAR também foram redirecionados para atender à nova demanda das frações da classe dominante agroindustrial. Uma nova orientação para o extensionismo consolidou-se na extinção da ABCAR em 1974. Portanto, a extensão rural no Brasil contribuiu para intensificar a desigualdade no campo ao longo de sua existência. / In this study, the trajectory of Brazil’s rural extension during 1948 and 1974 will be analyzed. The Brazilian extensionism project is due to a successful private enterprise that occurred in 1948 between Nelson Rockefeller’s American International Association (AIA) and the government of Minas Gerais State. Right in 1956, extensionism became national policy when the Brazilian Association of Rural Credit and Assistance (ABCAR) was created. During this trajectory, rural extension was projected as the vehicle for disseminating agricultural and sanitary techniques, whose target audience was the small-scale farmers. In this study, special emphasis is placed on the relationship between ABCAR and the Brazilian rural employer’s organization,, mainly the National Agriculture Confederation (CNA) and the National Agriculture Society (SNA). During the so-called “modernization” of the agriculture in the 1970s, the objectives of ABCAR were also adjusted to meet the new demand of the fractions of the dominant agroindustrial class. A new orientation to extensionism was consolidated in 1974, when ABCAR was abolished. Therefore, rural extension in Brazil contributed to increase inequality in the countryside during its existence.

Sigismondo D’India (1582 ?-1629 ?), contemporain de Claudio Monteverdi, est un compositeur parmi les plus importants du début du XVIIe siècle : l’un des pères fondateurs de la musique moderne. La présente thèse entend le situer dans un contexte qui nécessite d’être rappelé et mis à jour, celui de la cour de Turin où le musicien s’est établi de 1611 à 1623, période la plus fructueuse de sa carrière musicale dont l’étude s’organise autour de trois problématiques : la musique, le mécénat et l’identité nobiliaire.Il s’agit, dans un premier temps, d’étudier la circulation des musiciens, artistes, imprimeurs et sources musicales mais également d’analyser certaines œuvres du compositeur. Ainsi, D’India, chanteur, guitariste, compositeur et poète, apparaît comme l’un des musiciens les plus audacieux et les plus singuliers de son temps.Le mécénat artistique accompagne sa carrière musicale : il favorise ses déplacements, relie les différentes villes où se trouvent le musicien et ses dédicataires et facilite l’émulation créatrice. L’étude du mécénat à travers sa production musicale dévoile notamment la multiplicité des rapports entre D’India et ses dédicataires. Enfin, par identité nobiliaire, nous entendons étudier la manière dont le compositeur contribue à la construction de l’identité culturelle d’une cour en même temps qu’il construit son propre statut de noble. L’identité nobiliaire peut être ainsi considérée comme un préalable à l’identité nationale. Nous voulons par ailleurs montrer que D’India remplit parfaitement le rôle de musicien-Gentilhomme et que sa musique participe à la construction d’un modèle d’urbanité. / Sigismondo D’India, (1582? -1629?) a contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi, was one of the major composers of the early XVIIth century and one of the founding fathers of modern music. This thesis aims at setting him against a background which requires some reminiscing and updating, that of the court of Turin, where the musician settled between 1611 and 1623. It was the most fruitful period of his musical career, the study of which addresses three issues: music, patronage and nobiliary identity.I shall first study the movements of musicians, artists, printers and musical sources, and shall analyse besides some works by the composer. It appears that Sigismondo D’India, together a singer, a guitar-Player, a composer and a poet, stands out as one of the boldest and the most idiosyncratic musicians of his days.His musical career goes hand in hand with artistic patronage, which made his travelling easier, connected the various cities accommodating the musician and his dedicatees and facilitated creative emulation. The study of patronage through D’India’s creativity in music points out, among other things, the numerous relationships between him and his dedicatees.Finally, through the notion of nobiliary identity, I shall focus on the way in which the composer contributed to building up the cultural identity of a court while building up his own status as a nobleman. The nobiliary identity can thus be considered a first step toward national identity. I also aim at showing that D’India was perfectly up to the role of gentleman-Musician, and that his music contributed to building a model of urbanity.

The medieval art and architecture of Scottish collegiate churches

Collegiate churches were founded for two essential aims: the augmentation of divine worship, and the salvation of souls. This thesis brings to light just how important material and aesthetic enrichments were in regards to these functions. The vast majority of collegiate churches in Scotland were substantially augmented around the time of their foundation. Patrons undertook significant building programmes and provided a variety of furnishings and ornaments to facilitate and enrich the services their body of clergy performed. Precise statutes were laid down in order to ensure that clergy were skilled singers and organists. Many founders also made provision for their burial within their collegiate churches so that they could garner the maximum spiritual benefit from the organisations that they had founded. To the author's knowledge, this is the first in-depth account of the art and architecture of Scottish medieval colleges. This thesis looks closely at the architecture, furnishings, rituals, music, imagery, and commemorative functions of the forty-nine collegiate churches founded in Scotland. A close concentration on this institutional form has meant that buildings, artworks, and practices which have hitherto not received significant scholarly attention have been carefully scrutinised. Furthermore, by looking at so many aspects of collegiate churches, the present study enriches an understanding of these institutions by providing a more holistic picture of their functions and significance. Ultimately this thesis examines why physical and aesthetic enrichment went hand in hand with the founding of a college, and what role this material culture had in regards to how collegiate churches functioned.

Le bon parti : soutenir le régime autoritaire : le cas du Congrès populaire général au Yémen (2008-2011) / A real catch ? : backing the authoritarian regime : the case of General people’s congress supporters in Yemen (2008-2011)

La démarche générale de cette thèse est d’aller étudier le politique ailleurs que dans les oppositions, en explorant les ressorts de l’engagement et les logiques d’action au sein d’un parti hégémonique au pouvoir. A partir d’une enquête de terrain menée au Yémen entre 2008 et 2011 dans différentes sections locales du Congrès populaire général (CPG – al-mu’tamar al-sha‘bî al-‘âmm), j’interroge les pratiques militantes ordinaires et les investissements dont le parti fait l’objet. Le CPG constitue un observatoire privilégié pour interroger l’exercice de la domination – ses modes d’imposition et de contournement – dans un contexte où le régime autoritaire se trouve contesté. Au pouvoir depuis sa création en 1982 et fondé sur l’accommodation historique d’acteurs politiques divers, le parti forme un cadre dans lequel opèrent et se déploient les réseaux de patronage du président Ali Abdallah Saleh (1978-2012). La structure de l’échange politique qui en résulte favorise le développement de dépendances matérielles qui n’excluent pas, si ce n’est entretiennent, des formes multiples d’attachement affectif et idéologique au parti au pouvoir. Je souligne dans cette thèse les ambivalences du soutien au régime autoritaire, l’évolution du régime d’obligations et de contraintes qui en découle, ainsi que l’ambivalence et la réversibilité de l’obéissance et du consentement. Ce travail invite ainsi à interroger les ressorts du fonctionnement et de la résilience d’un régime autoritaire et à dépasser les lectures fonctionnalistes réduisant le parti hégémonique soit à un instrument de reproduction du régime autoritaire, soit à celui de son irrésistible réforme / Contrary to political scientists’ tendency to focus on opposition actors and politics of contention in the Arab world, I study “the political” elsewhere. Built on extensive fieldwork carried out in Yemen from 2008 to 2011, my dissertation explores the motives of commitment, logics of action and everyday forms of activism in a hegemonic ruling party, the General people’s congress (GPC – al-mu’tamar al-sha‘bî al-‘âmm) and in a context where the regime’s authority is contested. The GPC is a great observatory to interrogate the exercise of domination. Founded in 1982, the party has operated as a key apparatus of Ali Abdallah Salih’s authoritarian regime (1978-2012) and a relay for its patronage networks. Far from constituting a homogenous amalgam of president supporters within which discipline is obvious, deep divisions and contradictory logics of action strain the GPC. If its loose structure, the extreme heterogeneity of its members and the elasticity of its political line require the imposition of schemes of domination, they favour in return the expression of indiscipline. In this regard, I study diffuse modes of domination as well as ways to bypass, or even exploit, them. By exploring the dynamics of clientelist politics and politicisation promoted by the party, my dissertation underlines the ambivalences of “participation” and sheds light on the blurry frontier between compliance and resistance, consent and dissent
