Bring Your Own Device and Nurse Executives Decision Making: A Qualitative Description

Martinez, Karen 12 December 2014 (has links)
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon is important in the healthcare environment because this growing trend is totally changing the workplace landscape in healthcare organizations, such as British Columbia (BC). The organizations need to be proactive and aware of this trend to decide the best way to approach this phenomenon. Currently, there is little current research that exists in Canada in context to provide a distinct understanding of the complexities and difficulties unique to this phenomenon within the nursing practice. In order to develop an understanding of BYOD in healthcare workplace, a perspective was needed of those experiencing the phenomenon of interest. The premise of this research was to explore the BYOD phenomenon from the nursing perspective. This study focused on the experiences, views, and perceptions of nurse executives/managers about how they make decisions regarding use of personal handheld devices in the workplace. A qualitative description was undertaken and the collection of data involved telephone interviews in which participants were asked to reflect on their views and/or experiences regarding BYOD in the workplace. During the literature research process, the researcher discovered that there were similar research studies previously done in the early 2000s that found early healthcare organizational concerns with the use of personal digital assistant devices (PDA) in the clinical setting. In this study, four major themes emerged that provided an insights as to how nurse NEx/M make decisions regarding BYOD. The four major themes included: 1) management perspective, 2) opportunities, 3) disadvantages, and 4) solutions. The results of this study will aid in bringing greater awareness of BYOD to other executives and managers in nursing and should also provide information to the leaders throughout the healthcare organizations and health IT department. / Graduate

Geoarchaelogical Investigation Of Central Anatolian Caravanserais Using Gis

Ertepinar Kaymakci, Pinar 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study comprises analysis of geological, geomorphological constraints that played role in the site selection of caravanserais. In order to do this, 15 caravanserais located along a route from NevSehir-Aksaray-Konya to BeySehir were used. The data used in the study include a caravanserai database, lithological maps, and digital elevation model of the area. GIS analyses performed in the study are proximity, visibility, and probability distribution (PDA). The first step is the generation of the ancient trade route which is used as a reference in other analysis. Results of the analysis indicate that the average distance between consequent caravanserais is 10 km. PDA suggests that there should be two more caravanserais between BeySehir - Yunuslar and one caravanserai between Obruk - Sulatnahani hans. Caravanserais are very close to a water source but not at their immediate vicinity. Groundwater is not considered in this study / dominant water sources are streams, springs and lakes. Their visibility tested in an area of 78 km2 shows a great variation suggesting that visibility is not considered during the site selection. Ignimbrite, limestone and marble are preferred rocks types although other rocks such as clastic rocks are exposed in closer distances.

Otimização das condições de produção microbiológica de destruxinas por Beauveria felina / Optimal conditions for the microbial production of destruxins by Beauveria felina

Raquel Peres de Morais Urano 21 October 2010 (has links)
The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria felina produces destruxins, cyclic hexadepsipeptides which have several biological activities, such as insecticidal, phytotoxic, cytotoxic against tumor cells, antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus, among others. Because of the insecticidal activity of destruxins, fungi that produce them have a considerable economic importance. Therefore the aim of this study was to optimize the conditions for the growth of Beauveria felina and its production of destruxins by using different culture media, in order to isolate larger quantities for the evaluation of their toxic potential. Experimental design and multivariate analysis were used for the optimization of growth conditions, resulting in three conditions for optimum growth for each of the culture media MF, PDB and SBD. Both known and unknown destruxins were observed in each of the optimal conditions, along with destruxins that were not previously isolated from Beauveria felina. The cultivation of Beauveria felina in PDB was the one that showed the largest amount of unknown destruxins (5). We then carried out an optimization of the chromatographic analysis of destruxins by HPLC-PDA-ELSD-MS and the validation of this method. One of the fractions obtained from the culture medium of Beauveria felina showed anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus, while two of its purified fractions, P1 (destruxin Ed1 - m/z 625 and pseudodestruxin B or pseudodestruxin C - isobaric m/z 669) and P7 (destruxin D or hydroxyhomodestruxin B or roseotoxin C - isobaric m/z 623), were active against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.

Evaluation of Wireless Techniques for Short-Range Communication / Utvärdering av trådlösa tekniker för kommunikation över korta avstånd

Söderkvist, Jonas January 2003 (has links)
On radar level gauges currently shipped by Saab Rosemount, some adjustments of the unit's parameters has to be performed in the field. Presently, this is a cumbersome procedure; the operator has to be very close to the gauge and he either has to carry with him a bulky configuration unit or use a basic control unit on the gauge. A wireless solution, where a portable device and a receiver replace the control unit, would both allow the operator to work from a distance and eliminate the need for the bulky device. The most conspicuous restraint for such a solution is a very low allowed power dissipation. The reason for this is that some gauges do not have a separate power supply, but are fed directly off the communication bus. A viable solution should also be commercially available and robust enough to operate in an industrial environment. To meet these requirements both a theoretical and a practical assessment was conducted, where the two techniques for wireless communication, IrDA, and Bluetooth, was given special consideration. As for the portable device, the market for hand-held computers was investigated and ultimately a PDA from Palm was selected for this project. Together with this PDA, a prototype for each of the two wireless techniques was tested to ascertain their performance with respect to power dissipation, communication range, and communication robustness. This investigation revealed that Bluetooth could be used over a much greater distance than IrDA and it did also provide a more robust solution overall. IrDA is nonetheless also a competent technique, and has its primary advantage in terms of much lower power dissipation compared to Bluetooth.

Are handheld computers secure enough to be used in the health- and medical care?

Larsson, Sandra January 2002 (has links)
The aim of this report is to discuss computer security in handheld computers and to find out the appropriate security level that must be implemented to be able to use handheld computers within the Swedish healthcare system. Most healthcare centers are using some kind of electronic journals for their patient´s data today, but there are still a number of clinics that are usingthe old paper-system. On a few places in Sweden the use of handheld computers at the clinics has already started, but in the United States the use of handheld computers in the medical area is already widespread and from this we can see a lot of different situations where it is useful and effective to work with handheld computers. The security demands on patient´s journals are high and regulated in both Swedish law and regulations from the National Swedish Board of Health and Welfare. The law does not have any substantial demands, but states that there should be an adequate security level based on the nature of the information and the costs. The conclusions of this report is that this level of security can be achieved in handheld computers if additional software is installed and used in combination with the security features in the operating system. It is also necessary to have a good method for user identification that is adjusted to fit the situation in the clinic.

Användarcentrerad utveckling av mobilt IT-stöd / User centered perspective on development of mobile information technology

Lundell, Johan, Sjögren, Gustav January 2006 (has links)
This exam paper has been a collaboration between the writers and SYSteam Utvecklingspartner in Huskvarna. The assignment was about finding a need for a mobile application, making a requirement specification document with design documents and parallel to this constructing a prototype. The assignment is summarized in the following questions: • How can companies in the forest industry benefit from mobile information technology? • How can a user centered perspective be used in the process of making the requirement specification document and the design documents? • How do guidelines for usability apply to a mobile application? Three visits to companies in the forest industry were made to find a need for mobile information technology solutions. After a small analysis of the different companies’ problems and conditions the decision was to use Tenhults Impregneringsverk AB in the case study. We used the FA/SIM method in our job of finding the organization needs for change and the principles of User Centered Design in the work of constructing a prototype. The result of our work is a requirement specification with design documents and a prototype. The final prototype is an application deployed on to a PDA with a barcode scanner. Our conclusion is that the purpose of mobile information technology often is about making the torrent of information more effective by reducing the duplication of work and securing the quality of the information. Using a user centered perspective in the development work has in general terms worked out pretty well for us. Requirements and demands of the application have become clearer to us after each iteration, and in the end the customer and the developer organization where on the same terms. We have been able to apply the guidelines of usability on MobSaw (is the name of the application prototype that was made during the exam work). The principles are universal; the biggest difference is about input and screen size because the hardware’s capacity is limited. The advantages of the smaller frameworks for mobile devices is that the focus on usability increases.

Mobila kartapplikationer : Interaktionselements inverkan på användbarhet

Hammeltz, Mikael January 2010 (has links)
Go och Eniros mobila karttjänst. Utifrån teori inom området kategoriserades interaktionselement in i fyra områden.

Jürgensen, Nadia January 2017 (has links)

Aspects of whistleblowing in the South African Labour Law

Malan, Nicole Helene 26 May 2011 (has links)
The main focus of this dissertation is to examine the operation of whistleblowing within an organisation. Whistleblowing constitutes an act by an employee to expose perceived unlawful activity by an employer or employee, within an organisation or company, to an authority in the position to redeem the situation. It is based on the presumption that any kind of business or organisation has to be governed by laws in order to protect society from fraudulent and corrupt practices. In South Africa, the Protected Disclosures Act of 2000 (PDA) sets out a clear and simple framework to promote responsible whistleblowing by reassuring workers that to remain quiet about perceived malpractice is not the only safe option and is aimed at safeguarding the employee who raises concerns. Thus, from a legal perspective, an employee making a disclosure under certain circumstances and prerequisites enjoys full protection of the law. Whistleblowing is thus not just about anonymously informing, but rather about raising a concern. However, whistleblowers, even if they act in good faith often risk recrimination, victimisation and sometimes dismissal. Therefore, in order to determine whether the PDA is applicable, certain criteria have to be met, pertaining to the definition of disclosures and of occupational detriment. A number of consequences may follow from the contravention of the PDA. The Act provides mechanisms for the employee to disclose sensitive information regarding alleged improper conduct by the employer. In order to enjoy the protection of the act the employee must have trusted the disclosed information to be true. However, not all disclosures constitute protected disclosures, and for the purposes of the PDA certain requirements have to be met. When it comes to automatically unfair dismissals, the most difficult issue remains that of causation. It is a courageous effort to blow the whistle on perceived corrupt or illegal practices by an employer of any kind, and such an action is often met with harsh retaliation. Therefore employees often remain reluctant to speak out about practices that might threaten the higher echelons of their organisational hierarchy. On a personal level, blowing the whistle may have severe consequences for the individual; dismissal being but one of them. Internationally there is growing recognition that the act of whistleblowing is healthy and necessary for organisations in order to control corruption and illegal practices. The international community has also implemented a variety of whistleblowing laws and procedures for protecting and encouraging those who speak out. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Mercantile Law / unrestricted
