Photographs are constantly around us in newspapers, magazines, advertizing bill boards, art galleries and specially through the family albums. Collecting pictures of special occasions like births, weddings, birthdays, and trips are a custom of almost any family. Why register and file these souveniers? In order to explore in detail the relation of the family with their photo album and trace the significance of the photo album for the family, a recent study between two families, Aragão and Silva was carried out. This study involved six volunteers, three in each family who were interviewed individually on their personal memories of each pre-selected picture shown of their own family pictures. The behavior of the interviewer was based on minimum interventions, leaving the participants free to discourse about the images. As a result it was observed that regardless of the differences in relationship of the photo album, the pictures allowed the participants to revisit experiences, re-signify events and create vivid memory narratives. The significance of recollective memory is made through contact with others and one recognizes himself as part of a history constructed collectively. In this way, the family album is an important iconographic documented legacy for the family and therefore, not only a file of registered souveniers but over all as images of affection, feelings and memories that instigate narratives capable of extending/amplifying the past and the present.

The aim of this research is to analyse photographs from the city of Cuiabá in the 1920´s. The proposal of this analysis is based on readings, identifying and representing, by means of summarizing and describing so that informative content related to the socio-historical and cultural context of the city can be recuperated using underlying images. The analysis was carried out using twenty photographs grouped into different thematic sets which range from the architectural monuments, public and private spaces, family portraits, means of transportation, fashion and leisure. Among the results obtained, and theoretical discussions provided by the bibliography, are analyses which show the possibilities of procedure both in relation to summarized texts from readings of the images, as well as denotative and connotative descriptions which represent the content of the images. Taking this into account, this work can contribute to the conservation of local social memories, as well as Information Science, more specifically dealing with information in terms of carrying out an approach and a proposal of methodological procedures, which can help with dealing with information and photograph collections.

Modelagem matemática com fotografias

Rocha, Josy January 2013 (has links)
In this work is investigated the students' perception about mathematics present in photographs, as well as the possibility of using photos as learning tools. We (I and the students) analyze photos from local historical monuments and buildings of the architecture from other countries. The geometry was approached with different focus from the traditional teaching, whose main strategy is solving exercises, adopting the repetition technique for knowledge transmission. Instead, in the present work, mathematical modelling was adopted as teaching strategy, creating opportunities and encouraging students to participate in the process of constructing their own knowledge. Aiming to demystify mathematics as the science that always produces accurate results, was introduced the idea of error, which is inherent to all experimental activities.

Visual Narratives of The Old West: How Arizona Old Western Towns Communicate History to Contemporary Tourists

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The history of the American Old West has frequently been romanticized and idealized. This dissertation study explored four Arizona towns that developed during the era of the American Old West: Tombstone, Jerome, Oatman, and Globe. The study broadly examined issues of remembering/forgetting and historical authenticity/myth. It specifically analyzed historic tourist destinations as visual phenomenon: seeking to understand how town histories were visually communicated to contemporary tourists and what role historically-grounded visual narratives played in the overall tourist experience. The study utilized a visual methodology to organize and structure qualitative data collection and analysis; it incorporated visual data from historic and contemporary photographs and textual data from observations and interviews. Through a careful exploration of each town's past and present, the research proposed a measure to assess how the strength of visual connections between past and present impacted tourist impressions of each town. The analysis suggested that, due to a general lack of historic knowledge, tourist impressions were more closely connected to contemporary experiences and prior expectations of the American Old West than to historically-grounded visual narratives. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2014

Influência da relação espacial (anteroposterior e transversal) dos segmentos maxilares prévio à queiloplastia sobre o índice oclusal em pacientes com fissura completa de lábio e palato unilateral / Influence of anteroposterior and transverse spatial relationship of maxillary segments before primary surgeries on the occlusal index in individuals with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP)

Gleisieli Carla Petelinkar Baessa Cardoso 02 October 2013 (has links)
Background and Purpose: It is known that primary lip and palate repair in complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) causes inhibition of increasing displacement of the maxillary base, as well as of the dentoalveolar region. However, the maxilla divided in two different segments with varied anatomical conditions, as well as the transverse and anteroposterior changes, may be among the etiologic factors to yield deficient maxillary and dentoalveolar growth. This study aimed to evaluate, by dental casts obtained before primary surgeries of patients with CUCLP, the influence of the anteroposterior and transverse spatial relationship of maxillary segments and the cleft width on the maxillary growth and occlusal relationship scored by the Five years old Index. Methods: A total of 357 dental casts of the maxillary arch before lip and palate closure were scanned and evaluated as to the cleft width and anteroposterior and transverse spatial relationship of maxillary segments. Group 1 had maxillary segments contacting in the anterior region; Group 2 presented maxillary segments with spacing between them and different degrees of anteroposterior discrepancy (a=mild; b=moderate and c=severe), and Group 3 exhibited collapse between the two segments, being that the lesser segment presented flexure to the median region. The cleft width was scored as narrow (N), regular (R), wide (W) and very wide (WW) by the visual method in anterior, medium and posterior regions. The intraoral photographs at six years of age were used for the rating dental relationship from 1 to 5 scores, following characteristics of Five years old Index.and then relating to the spatial relationship of the anteroposterior and lateral segments jaws. Results: A single investigator performed the assessments and the kappa test showed that the intraexaminer agreement was almost perfect. The statistical evaluation between the occlusal index and the spatial relationship and cleft width was performed using the Spearman correlation coefficient. It was defined spatial relation, showing a prevalence of 56.82% 2b Group and the less prevalent obtained in Group 3. In the occlusal analysis of this work observed a higher prevalence of index 3, with 36.33%, whose prognosis for orthodontic treatment is regular. There was no statistically significant in the correlation between the occlusal and anteroposterior discrepancy between the maxillary segments. However, this was not observed for the cleft width before primary surgery, which statistically influenced the outcomes of the occlusal index. Conclusions: The different degrees of anteroposterior discrepancy of greater and lesser segments did not influence the interarch relationship. The cleft width between the maxillary segments influenced the interarch relationship, with poor maxillary growth in greater cleft widths.

The Effects of Differential Exposure to Gruesome Photographs on Mock Jurors' Emotions & Legal Judgments

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: In a trial, jurors are asked to set aside their emotions and make judgments based solely on evidence. Research suggests jurors are not always capable of this, particularly when exposed to gruesome photographic evidence. However, previous research has not looked at the potentially moderating effect of when and for how long jurors are exposed to emotionally disturbing photographs, nor how many photographs they see. In two experiments I tested the impact of the timing of and extent of exposure to gruesome photographs on jurors’ emotions, verdicts, and punishment recommendations. In Study 1, I investigated the effect of timing and exposure duration to a single gruesome photograph of a victim in a murder case (no exposure, brief early exposure, brief late exposure, and prolonged exposure) on mock jurors’ emotions and case judgments. Prolonged exposure (relative to no or brief exposure, regardless of timing) increased disgust, which in turn was associated with harsher punishment. Contrary to previous research, the photograph manipulation did not influence verdicts. The results were mixed and inconclusive regarding brief early versus late exposure. In Study 2, I compared repeatedly viewing a single gruesome photograph to viewing a set of four similar, but unique gruesome photographs—holding the exposure time constant—to assess the impact of quantity of photos on jurors’ emotions and case judgments. Viewing multiple gruesome photos (relative to no photos) led to increase in guilty verdicts through increased disgust, replicating previous research. Viewing a single gruesome photo (relative to no photo) led to increase in guilty verdicts through disgust, differing from Study 1 findings. Viewing multiple gruesome photos and a single gruesome photo led to more disgust, compared to viewing no photo. However, differing from Study 1, gruesome photographs did not lead to an increase in punishment recommendations. There were no significant differences between exposure to a single or multiple gruesome photos on disgust, verdicts, or punishments. Overall, greater exposure to gruesome evidence led to increased disgust and punitiveness, relative to those with less exposure. However, jurors with greater exposure to the same or different photographs did not differ in reported emotions, verdicts, or punitiveness. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2020

Thai breast cancer patients: experiences and views about photographs of other women with the same disease

Padunchewit, Jularut 26 February 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Photographs invite women to construct their own meanings of the self and illness without boundaries of race, ethnicity, and culture differences. This study analyzed 15 intensive interviews with 15 Asian (Thai) women in Thailand. The results are divided into two parts. In part I, grounded theory analyses revealed four major themes of experiences of Asian (Thai) female breast cancer survivors, including: (1) experiencing uncertainty of signs and symptoms, (2) entering the medical establishment, (3) experiencing self-change after treatment, and, (4) desiring to return to normality. In part II, the 15 women were shown a postmodern artistic photo book of American women who have breast cancer. The goal was to assess how they related to American women faced with their own stories of breast cancer. The results of the postmodern artistic photo book showed that Asian (Thai) women narrated their illness experiences in both modern and postmodern ways. This study not only revealed the sociological perspectives of Asian (Thai) women who suffered from breast cancer as they experienced a four-stage process, but enhanced our understanding of how disease experiences are socially constructed. In addition, this study provides an opportunity for medical systems in both the East and the West to use postmodern artistic photo books of women with breast cancer for forging ties with others, including patients, patients’ families, hospitals, and caregivers.
