Termite control for homeowners

Baker, Paul B. 03 1900 (has links)
9 pp. / Termites are considered Arizona's number one urban pest. All termites can be placed into 3 broad categories based on their habitat: damp-wood, dry-wood and subterranean. In Arizona, damp-wood and dry wood termites are not major wide spread problems but can be under selected conditions. Subterranean termites on the other hand are considered one of our major urban pests. Detection of the presence of termites in many cases can be difficult to do. A discussion of construction practices is presented to keep termites from invading your home. Control technologies such as a pre and post-treatment using a termiticide, physical barriers and baiting systems are presented.

Struggling for a right : Islam and the participation in sports and physical recreation of girls and women in Kuwait

Al-Haidar, Ghaneemah Moham January 2004 (has links)
The present study is the first of its kind. It is a study about the involvement of Kuwaiti females in sports and physical recreation. The study invesigates both the structures and resources that make female participation in sports and physical recreation possible, and the ideological and physical barriers that prevent girls and young women from taking part. The development of female sports and physical recreation in Kuwait is investigated in relation to relevant historical and political developments, taking particular account of the influence of Islamic ideologies about the role of women in society, women's enfranchisement, and women's bodies. It provides evidence from the Holy Qur'an in support of the need for girls and women to exercise their bodies. The research highlights the contradictory position that Kuwaiti women find themselves in living in a relatively liberal Islamic state with an official discourse of gender equality, but facing traditional and unequal gender divisions in daily life and throughout culture, specifically in sports and physical recreation. Opportunities for females in sports and recreation are tied to the political administration system of the state and the study looks at the present day situation of public provision and resourcing, following the liberation of the country from Iraq, as well as private resources that have developed as a result of westernized, global influences.. The study presents recommendations for Kuwaiti sports policy-makers, planners, and providers - that may be useful, too, for those in other societies in the Arabian Peninsula - concerning sports and physical recreation for Muslim girls and women in the future. The project traces the development of organised sport and physical recreation for females from 1950 until the present day. It includes details of physical education in schools, and the establishment and expansion of sport clubs and other facilities that are now in the country. Reference is made to the role of government agencies and departments - in particular the Public Authority for Youth and Sport (PAYS) that has special responsibility to establish stronger and more specialized opportunities. Since there is virtually no previous research or literature about the topic of girls and young women's involvement in sport and physical recreation in Kuwait, the main method of data collection was through questionnaires and interviews, supported by documentary evidence, including official statements.

Temporary Inaccessibility : Recognizing the non-permanent barriers faced by people with disabilities

Stüssi, Erich January 2022 (has links)
People with disabilities will experience discrimination in many ways during their daily life; one way being the presence of physical barriers in the public built environment which prevent their full participation. Within the EU and in Germany, regulations and building standards are the primary tool used for ensuring accessibility within the built environment, however, full and equal access for people with disabilities has not been achieved. This discrepancy indicates the limitations of accessibility through standardization and regulation. Physical barriers, such as stairs, have long been identified and understood to prevent access for people with disabilities, however, there seems to be relatively little scientific literature discussing temporary forms of barriers which also prevent access in the built environment. This research project aims to identify and understand barriers which create temporary inaccessibility for people with disabilities. These barriers may reflect unregulated or unenforced situations within the public built environment, one example of this type of situation being construction sites. Of particular interest is the role temporality plays within the development of barriers and accessibility. The primary research takes the form of go-along case studies with three participants, each having a different disability or impairment. The setting for these case studies is Europaplatz, a plaza at Berlin’s central train station; this location can be considered as a critical case, findings here should be archetypal and can be expected to hold true in other similar situations. The research shows the existence of many temporary barriers which have long lasting inaccessible impacts for people with disabilities. These barriers primarily stem from the presence of nearby construction sites and activities. In most cases a small amount of initial consideration towards accessibility would have prevented these temporary inaccessibilities. Even after their creation, very minor changes could remove these barriers and create a more accessible environment. My research indicates that there are serious problems around construction related activities which create barriers for people with disabilities. A clear lack of consideration for accessibility during the planning, approval and oversight of construction activities is shown.

Perceptions of registered nurses with regard to continuing formal education

Richards, Lydia Elizabeth 31 July 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore and describe registered nurse's perceptions with regard to continuing formal education. A quantitative descriptive, explorative research design was used to study registered nurses views with regard to continuing formal education and to identify the barriers to continuing formal education as experienced by registered nurses. Convenience sampling was used to select the research sample of registered nurses working at four state health institutions in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Descriptive statistics, based on calculations using the Microsoft (MS) Excel (for Windows 2000) programme, were used to summarise and describe the research results obtained from the questions completed by the registered nurses. The research results indicated that most registered nurses perceive continuing formal education as beneficial to their personal and professional growth and to improve the quality of patient/client care, but barriers exist which prevent or deter them from undertaking continuing formal education programmes. The main barriers were identified as structural barriers, including lack of funding, job and family responsibilities and lack of coherent staff development planning. / Health Studies / M. A. The city of Goiás presents itself as a historical patrimony of Humanity and has built its architectural, historical and cultural appearance with the profile of a mining city, with Catholic religious predominance and buildings marked by slavery. The city that was once the capital of the state, grew in an unplanned urbanistic way, the historic center was maintained where monuments and buildings can be traced back to the beginning of the history of the state, however its buildings that have undergone several reforms do not count with restorations / adaptations in favor of accessibility, making it difficult for physically handicapped visitors and residents of the city itself. Many of its residents who have some kind of physical disability had little access to the culture and leisure provided by their museums, churches and other spaces as a result of stones, staircases and non-standard accessibility ramps. The barriers that the historic center generates go beyond the difficulty of access caused by physical barriers due to the difficulty of accessing their spaces, but the generation of attitudinal barriers and diverse constraints that affect them and makes them try to avoid certain routes and not be able to enjoy parties traditional, even religious, among others. With the present research it was possible to note that Goiás 12 is a city that presents a high rate of accessibility and mobility unfeasibility, which ends up compromising not only people with physical disability or reduced mobility, but also the entire population, since investments could intensify tourism and therefore income in the city. We have worked with the idea that capitalism intertwines the most varied areas of human experience, where the commodified body suffers interference from space in the same way that it has become a biopower space and this biopower interferes in spaces. Taking the considerations that urban planning and reorganization measures need to be made and carried out so that the historic center and the city as a whole can receive the entire public in an egalitarian way, accessibility is not understood here as the only way to improve conditions of the lives of people with physical disabilities, but without a doubt it is a beginning towards equity, destroying the walls of prejudice and exclusion, overcoming the invisible barriers between normal sayings and people with any physical disabilities.

Field durability test of CLT wall envelope using physical barriers against termites and structural performance of nailed hold-down brackets connected to fungus-exposed CLT walls

Neupane, Kamal 10 December 2021 (has links) (PDF)
The effectiveness of using commercial polyethylene flashing and stainless-steel mesh in CLT wall systems as the termite barriers were evaluated in a short-term field test. American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) E21's visual ratings ranged from 10 to 9 in the specimens showing little damage when no physical barriers were used. Termites were able to crawl beyond the physical barriers in few specimens showing the necessity of further research on height and installation method of physical barriers. On the second part, the effect of decay caused due to Postia placenta, a brown-rot fungus, on the structural performance of hold-down brackets connected to CLT walls was evaluated using monotonic and cyclic loadings. An increase in moisture content reduced the strength of the connection system but increased the initial stiffness. Decay caused delamination of CLT laminate perpendicular to the grain, a different failure pattern, compared to the wet control and dry control specimens.

Social hållbarhet med planerarens ögon : En fallstudie på planerarperspektiv i Trelleborg / Social sustainability through the eyes of the planner : A case study of a planners perspective in Trelleborg

Kowalczyk, Jakub, Muhamedagic, Ismar January 2022 (has links)
