Noto-ya-masogana : padi va boitshwaro

Lekganyane, Enniah Matemane 23 October 2012 (has links)
In this dissertation, Noto-ya Masogana is described as a moral story. The moral story can be distinguished from the didactic story and from the picaresque. The picaresque deals with a picaro who is the only main character. He is not presented as being trustworthy and responsible. As a result of this, this type of narrative is known as a 'Schelmroman' in German. The development of the story is simple and deals with the escapades of the picaro who goes on a journey. The didactic story presents the reader with a lesson, while the moral story indicates that a life well led will be rewarded. A life not well led will, in turn, be punished. In this narrative, Lesibana pays for his unfaithfulness to Mamahlo. He repents and the narrative has a happy ending. The method used in this investigation is based on an adjusted narratological model. Only the content and structure levels feature. The topic is identified as an important concept with regard to level one, the reason for this being that it influences the four different elements of the narrative, namely: characters, events time and place. Two main characters are distinguished, and the mutual relationship between them and less important characters receives attention. Events are divided into three categories according to importance. Events are thus called either essential, appropriate or coincidental. Two issues are relevant with regard to time; namely the moment at which an event takes place and the time which is occupied by an event. Place has a bearing on the natural as well as the sociocultural place. The concepts theme and narrating strategies play an important role on a structural level. In the discussion of the structure of Noto-ya-Masogana attention is paid to the exposition, the development, the climax and the resolution. The following techniques are relevant in this regard: motif, foreshadowing, retardation and acceleration of time, contrast, complication, focus and cycle. The study is conducted by comparing this novelette to the story of the Prodical Son and to the picaresque. Attention is also drawn to the author's use of the 'Makgoweng' motif. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Philosophy / unrestricted

Bencomo, Gisela 30 June 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation was to study the narrative discourse of three Cuban novelists who produced their works from 1902 to 1933, using a typology that reveals a picaresque view of Cuban society. Focusing on La conjura and La manigua sentimental by Jesús Castellanos (1879-1912), Las honradas and Las impuras by Miguel de Carrión (1875-1929), and Generales y doctores and Juan Criollo by Carlos Loveira (1882-1928), this dissertation identified and defined picaresque traits and elements in the characterization, contrasting main and secondary, male and female characters, at all social levels. The study considered the theories of the Spanish picaresque novel proposed by Antonio Maravall, Américo Castro, Claudio Guillén, Marcel Bataillon, and other critics, in order to delineate a model of traditional picaresque behavior, which was then applied to the analysis of each character. Sociopolitical and cultural conditions, as well as the psychology of the Cuban collective as presented by the authors, were also analyzed to pinpoint similarities and differences between the traditional Golden Age rogue and the characters created by the authors. Critics who have studied the influence of the Spanish picaresque genre on the Latin American novel make no reference to any of the authors or novels included in this study. Key analyses, however, identified the presence of characters that use picaresque modes of behavior as a means to manipulate the structures of power in order to survive and as a futile attempt to achieve their ends within a socioeconomic context that is undergoing a significant transition. Castellanos’ characters use their picaresque behavior mainly to attain a higher social status. Carrión concentrates on picaresque behavior in women as a means to manipulate the dominant male society, while Loveira’s picaresque characters are mainly interested in securing a position of political power.

Menchaca, Juan 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is that of demonstrating the importance of communication and travel in the Siglo de Oro as seen in selected picaresque novels. This study is divided into five chapters. The introductory chapter includes a literary and chronological history of the period and, in the interest of clarity, a plot summary of the selected picaresque novels. The second, third and fourth chapters discuss the various means of urban, rural and maritime communication and travel. The concluding chapter summarizes the study and asserts that communication and travel were of utmost importance during the Siglo LeQ ro and that the picaresque novel, describing faithfully the society that produced it, is a valuable data source for research of this kind.

The enlightened Christian? Hannah More in a human rights picaresque

Steel, Connie Michelle 22 September 2010 (has links)
This report explores and questions the history of human rights rhetoric through the 18th century anti-slave trade poem of Hannah More, Slavery, a poem. Hannah More used the term ‘human rights’ more than 150 years before the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Nevertheless, when historians and political scientists track the history of human rights, it is frequently presented as “from Locke through Paine” as part of a narrative of the “coming of age” of democracy in a longer quest for rights stemming from 18th century revolutions and radicalism. This report looks instead at the episodic nature of human rights rhetoric through 18th century ideas of the human. As argued here, More’s use of the term ‘human rights’ indicates an attempt to reconcile the tension between Enlightenment and Christian discourses to promote the anti-slave trade cause. / text

Pikareskné prvky v Príkladných novelách / Picaresque elements in the Exemplary Novels

Schürgerová, Johana January 2016 (has links)
The goal of this graduation's thesis was to focus on picaresque elements in The Exemplary Novels (Novelas ejemplares). The object of research were, therefore, ones of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age - picaresque novels The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes (La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes) and Guzmán de Alfarache and their influence on Cervantes' literary works. We analyzed the picaresque elements, different variations of theirs' in the selected Exemplary Novels. More specifically, we dealt with the character of picaro, form of the works and a concept of realism in Alemán and Cervantes.

07 December 2007 (has links)
This study focuses on the relation between the picareque genre and the way in which guilt is processed in literature. André Brink’s Inteendeel (On the contrary) was used in this examination and also, for a wider perspective than merely the South African situation, Arthur Japin’s De zwarte met het witte hart (The two hearts of Aquasi Boachi). The possibilities offerd by the picaresque in order to investigate the manifestation of guilt in literary texts were explored with the theories of, inter alia, Wicks, Ricoeur and Todorov. Tracing the origins of the picaresque reveals that this type of text exhibits specific characteristics, e.g. an unethical attitude that is usually imposed on the individual by a society in crisis – “guilt” and a confessional tone are therefore intrinsically part of the picaresque. Using Wicks’s modal-generic approach, the two novels are examined with the purpose of determining their degree of “picaresqueness” to test the validity of the hypothesis, i.e. that the more a text displays picaresque characteristics, the more the issue of guilt would be a central theme to that text. In the two novels relevant to this study, colonial guilt is the main form of guilt examined. / Prof. W. Burger

A voz do autor no Lazarillo de Tormes / The author\'s voice in Lazarillo de Tormes

Oliveira, Katia Aparecida da Silva 12 November 2008 (has links)
The aim of this work is to accomplish a reading of Lazarillo de Tormes considering the discourse of the narrator and also the voice of the author within the story and how it influences the construction of its sense. By recognizing the voice of this implicit author in the prologue of the story among the narrators discourse it is possible to identify the perspective of the author which is not always the same of the narrator. The encounter of these two perspectives forms some contradictions in Lázaros discourse as the narrator and it is through this conjunction that we consider to be forming the sense of the novel.

Lacowicz, Stanis David. January 2012 (has links)
A retomada do pícaro e de Dom Juan fomenta os aspectos desconstrucionistas do romance histórico contemporâneo, uma vez que os dois se caracterizam como anti-heróis que integram um espaço social ex-cêntrico, contrário às normas instituídas / Abstract: Sailing through the in-betweenness of literature, adventuring over the universe that appears when the frontiers cease to be mere dividing lines and are expanded to an environment of multiple confluences and meanings, our work proposes to study the reading that some contemporary Brazilian novels make of the Hispanic literary myths of picaro and Don Juan. The novels O feitiço da ilha do Pavão (1997), by João Ubaldo Ribeiro, and O Chalaça (1994), by José Roberto Torero, can be classified as contemporary historical novels, privileging a critical rereading of the hegemonic historic discourses and this is made through resources such as carnivalization, irony and intertextuality. In the first chapter, we focus on the relationship that Torero's novel establishes with the Spanish classical picaresque, that comes from games of masks and narrative layers. In the second, we look towards Ubaldo Ribeiro's novel, discussing the process whereby the text, while dialoguing with the narratives of the marvelous and the magical realism, retrieves the myth of Don Juan. The third chapter aims to bring closer both historical novels, by the zone of mythical-literary appropriation which they share, and that emerges through carnivalization and metafiction. Highly intertextual, the two novels meet on the crossing of their own tissue, with discursive building coming from a variety of sources. The recall of picaro and of Don Juan foments the deconstructionist aspects of the contemporary historical novel, once they are anti-heroes that integrate an ex-centric social space, contrary to the established norms / Mestre
