I offer a cloud of observations about language and art. I will prioritize my questions about how language operates in art, the way it functions within my own studio practice, and locate aesthetic interstices throughout. There will be insights gleaned from the various orderers of order (Lacan, Saussure) and orderers of disorder (Derrida, Agamben), walks in terra-incognita, and even some poetry on my part. I will take this chance to orient myself among different structures and deconstructions that have piledup around language, aesthetics and art.

Technological fundamentals of briquetting cotton stalks as a biofuelSaeidy, Ehab El 10 August 2004 (has links)
In Egypt, cotton residues serve as an over wintering site for insects such as pink bollworm which develop in these residues and attack nearby or the following crops. This causes valuable losses in the quantity and the quality of the cotton crop so much, so that the farmers have been obliged by the Ministry of Agriculture to burn these residues on the field immediately after the harvest operation in order to kill these insects and to prevent growth of other disease carriers. As a result, a huge amount of harmful gases and clouds of smoke covers the sky above Cairo and the surrounding regions and has thus led to both environmental pollution and adverse effects for human health. As a result of this, the Ministry of the Environment established a law preventing the farmers burning these residues on the fields. Due to this confusion in laws, the farmers began to store these residues once again or burn them illegally on the fields. The briquetting technology appears as an advantageous solution for the handling of the cotton stalk residues in Egypt. Through this process a cheap, storable, pest controlled and environmentally friendly biofuel can be produced as a complementary domestic fuel for the Egyptian rural areas.

Improving Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment for Acute Viral ConjunctivitisCoyle, Shannon Jean 01 January 2014 (has links)
Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye and one of the most frequent causes of visits to clinicians. There is significant controversy on the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and the use of ophthalmic antibiotics. The inconvenience of the untimely diagnostic tests led to the trend of treating conjunctivitis empirically with ophthalmic antibiotics. Subsequently, the diagnosis of bacterial conjunctivitis is higher than it should be resulting in overuse of antibiotics. Consequences of inappropriate diagnosis and treatment include increased virulence, increased health care costs, and incorrect use of antibiotics leading to possible adverse reaction and antibiotic resistance. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment will assist to reduce the diagnosis of bacterial conjunctivitis and use of ophthalmic antibiotics resulting in reduced virulence and reduced health care costs. The AdenoPlus test has been shown to be effective in appropriately diagnosing viral conjunctivitis and subsequently decreasing the use of ophthalmic antibiotics however this evidence in limited. A national retail clinic has adopted the use of this tool to assist with proper diagnosis and treatment of viral conjunctivitis. Data has not yet been analyzed to determine if the implementation of this test changes the practice of clinicians at the national retail clinic.

The Pore Structure of Indiana Limestone and Pink Dolomite for the Modeling of Carbon Dioxide in Geologic Carbonate Rock FormationsFreire-Gormaly, Marina 22 November 2013 (has links)
The primary objective was to predict the relative storage capacity of carbonate rocks relevant for carbon dioxide sequestration. To achieve this, a detailed pore scale characterization of model carbonate rocks, Indiana Limestone and Pink Dolomite, was conducted utilizing micro-computed tomography (microCT) data using pore network modeling and invasion percolation simulations. For the first time in literature, Pink Dolomite’s pore space characteristics were analyzed. A secondary objective was to compare thresholding techniques as applied to carbonates which exhibit dual porosity (porosity at multiple length scales). The analysis showed the sensitivity of existing methods to the thresholding technique, imaging method and material. Overall, the contributions of this work provide an assessment of two carbonates relevant for carbon capture and storage at the pore scale; and a preliminary assessment into thresholding dual porosity carbonates.

This study is divided into two chapters which presents studies done in three fishing communities of Patos Lagoon’s estuary: São Miguel, Bosque and Torotama. The first chapter is about the artisanal fishery’s fleet structure in the region and its evolution in time. Twenty fishermen of each community were interviewed, they answered questions about their vessels and the fishing gears and their vision about the changes that occurred in the sector. It was observed reduction trend in mesh sizes as well an increase of the engine power indicating an increase of fishing effort. Fishermen are aware of the changes the fishery has being undergoing. The second chapter addresses a less investigated issue in Brazil, the artisanal fishery self-consumption, i.e., the amount and type of fish consumed by the fishermen and their family of what is captured by them. Ten fishermen of each community were periodically interviewed, from September 2010 to May 2011. Personal information about the fishing activity and fish selfconsumption was collected. The average annual consumption per person was of 38.57 kg. Higher consumption occurred in spring and summer, the white croaker and the pink shrimp are the most consumed species in these seasons, respectively.

Spektroskopické studium dohasínajících výbojů v dusíku a jeho směsích / Spectroscopic Study of Post-Discharges in Nitrogen and its MixturesMazánková, Věra January 2009 (has links)
Presented thesis gives results obtained during the spectroscopic observations of post –discharges of the pure nitrogen plasma with small oxygen admixture and in the nitrogen – argon mixture and the effect of the pink afterglow in it. The DC discharge in the flowing regime has been used for the plasma generation. The decaying plasma was study by optical emission spectroscopy, mainly in the range of 300–800 nm. The first positive, second positive, first negative nitrogen spectral system and NO spectral systems were observed in measured spectra. The band head intensities of these bands have been studied in the dependencies on experimental conditions. Simultaneously, the relative vibrational populations on the given nitrogen states have been calculated. Two discharge tubes made from different materials (PYREX glass and QUARTZ glass) were used in the case of nitrogen plasma containing low oxygen traces (up to 0.2 %). These experiments have been carried out at two wall temperatures for the determination of the temperature effect on the post-discharge. The discharge tube around the observation point was kept at the ambient temperature (300 K) or it was cooled down to 77 K by liquid nitrogen vapor. The total gas pressure of 1 000 Pa and the discharge current of 200 mA were conserved for all these experiments. The relative populations of electronic states were calculated in the dependence on the post-discharge time. The dependencies on oxygen concentration were given, too. The results showed no simple dependence of vibrational populations on oxygen concentration. Generally, slight increase of neutral nitrogen states populations was observed with the increase of oxygen concentration. These observations were well visible due to the intensity of nitrogen pink afterglow effect that was well visible at all oxygen concentrations. The pink afterglow maximal intensity was reached at about 5–10 ms at the wall temperature of 300 K in the PYREX tube. The molecular ion emission was strongly quenched by the oxygen and as this was dominant process for the pink afterglow emission the pink afterglow effect disappears at oxygen concentration of about 2000 ppm. The temperature and wall material influences were observed, too. The post-discharge in nitrogen argon mixtures was studied only in the PYREX tube at the ambient wall temperature of 300 K. The power dissipated in an active discharge was constant of 290 kW. The experimental studies had two new parameters – total gas pressure (500 Pa – 5 000 Pa) and the argon concentrations that were varied in the range of 0–83 %. Also in this case the dependencies of relative intensities of the bands given above were obtained and further the relative populations of electronic states as a function of decay time, total gas pressure and on argon concentration were obtained. The pink afterglow effect was observed at all applied discharge powers and total gas pressures. At the highest argon concentrations, especially at lower pressure, the pink afterglow effect disappeared. The presented experimental work is one of the hugest sets of experiments in the nitrogen with oxygen traces and in nitrogen-argon mixtures. These data can be used as a very good fundament for the further studies using wide numeric modeling of the post-discharge kinetic processes.

Akustická stimulácia pomalovlnného spánku a jej vplyv na konsolidáciu pamäti u ľudí trpiacich nespavosťou / Acoustic stimulation of Slow wave sleep and its influence on consolidation of declarative memory in insomniaOrendáčová, Mária January 2019 (has links)
Slow-wave sleep plays an important role in consolidation of declarative memory. From electrophysiological point of view, this process is dependent on a common occurrence and mutual integration of neocortical slow oscillations (< 1 Hz), hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (150-250 Hz) and thalamo-cortical sleep spindles (10-15 Hz). Previous studies demonstrated that periodic acoustic stimulation by pink noise pulses applied at frequency of sleep slow oscillation during slow wave sleep leads to prolongation of slow wave sleep and to enhancement in declarative memory performance in normal sleepers. Our study investigated this kind of periodic acoustic stimulation in its relation to sleep architecture and declarative memory of people suffering from insomnia due to which there often comes to a reduction in slow wave sleep which positively correlates with worsening of declarative memory performance. Our aim was to investigate if this kind of comparatively non-invasive brain stimulation has a potential to increase a total length of slow wave sleep and enhance declarative memory performance in insomnia. Our study revealed acoustic stimulation neither improved declarative memory performance nor it increased total length of slow-wave sleep. No positive association was found between level of declarative memory...
