Triarylborane Functionalized Dicyanovinyl and Acetylacetone Based Molecular Platforms : Building Blocks for Multiple Anion Sensors and Efficient Phosphorescence Emitters

Rajendra Kumar, G January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Triarylborane Functionalized Dicyanovinyl and Acetylacetone Based Molecular Platforms: Building Blocks for Multiple Anion Sensors and Efficient Phosphorescence Emitters The main objective of this thesis is to design a simple strategy for triarylborane based multiple anion sensors and development of triarylborane incorporated phosphorescent metal complexes. The thesis consists of eight chapters and the contents of each chapter are given below. Chapter 1 This chapter gives a general introduction to recent advances relevant to the theme of the thesis. A review of the fundamental characteristics of triarylboranes and their applications in various fields such as chemical sensors and optoelectronics is presented. Advances in boron chemistry in the areas such as anion sensors, solid state emissive and phosphorescence materials are discussed in detail. The scope of the thesis is outlined at the end of the chapter. Chapter 2 The second chapter deals with the general experimental techniques and synthetic procedures followed in this thesis. Chapter 3 This chapter deals with a rational design strategy for differential identification of fluoride and cyanide ions using TAB based sensors. In general, most of the triarylboranes give similar optical responses towards fluoride and cyanide ions as they follow similar sensing mechanism. In order to circumvent this problem, two TAB-DCV conjugates (1 and 2) are designed and synthesised. The DCV unit is highly specific for cyanide ion owing to the presence of electrophilic carbon center. Probes 1 and 2 differ in steric crowding around the boron center. The less crowded boron center in 1 binds with fluoride as well as with cyanide ions giving similar optical response (luminescence is quenched in presence of F¯ and CN¯). In the case of 2, selectivity of boron center towards fluoride is tuned by increasing the steric crowding around the boron unit. The dicyanovinyl unit acts as selective sensing site for cyanide ions. As a result, 2 gives different fluorogenic response towards the anions F¯ and CN¯ which were considered as interfering anions in TAB based sensor chemistry. Thus, a modular design principle is developed for differential identification of fluoride and cyanide ions using TAB. Chapter 4 In this chapter, detailed photophysical studies of TAB-amine-DCV conjugates and colorimetric discrimination of fluoride and cyanide ions are discussed. Presence of amine based donor between the two electron deficient sites enhances the electronic conjugation in 3−5. Since there are two different acceptor sites with a common donor, two distinct charge transfer transition bands are observed in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. The absorption and emission spectra of these compounds show pronounced sensitivity to solvent polarity, signifying large excited state dipolmonents. Anion binding studies confirms that these compounds are highly selective towards fluoride and cyanide ions. Fluoride ions selectively interact with boron center and block the corresponding charge transfer transition thereby leading to a distinct colour change which is observable by naked eye. On the other hand, cyanide interacts with boron as well as DCV unit and blocks both the charge transfer transitions which results in disappearance of colour. Hence, compounds 4 and 5 exhibit different colorimetric signals for fluoride and cyanide ions. Since the absorption bands of 3 do not fall in the visible region, it does not show any colorimetric response towards the aforementioned anions. The anion sensing mechanisms are established by 1H, and 19F NMR studies. Chapter 5 This chapter presents a systematic study of the effect of length of π-electronic conjugation on the optical properties and anion sensing abilities of a series of TAB-oligothiophene-DCV conjugates (6−8). Their absorption as well as emission bands undergo redshift upon increasing the number of thiophene units between TAB and DCV units as the π-electronic conjugation in 6−8 is greatly dependent on the number of thiophene units. Their fluorescence emission is highly sensitive to solvent polarity. In the case of 6, the emission band undergoes a redshift with reduced intensity. In the case of 7 the emission band undergoes a redshift but the intensity is not affected by solvent polarity. In the case of 8, the emission band undergoes redshift with enhanced intensity in polar solvents. Interestingly, 7 and 8 show solvent viscosity dependent fluorescence. Structural reorganisation is restricted in viscous medium and results in enhanced emission for 7 and 8. Further, these compounds exhibit selective response towards the fluoride and cyanide ions with different colorimetric responses. Test strips made up of probes 7 and 8 have potential application in identifying fluoride and cyanide ions in aqueous medium. Chapter 6 This chapter describes synthesis and optical characterisation of triarylborane incorporated acetylacetone (acacH) ligands (9, 10) and their borondifluoride complexes (11, 12). AcacH ligands and BF2 complexes show solvent dependent emission phenomena due to the involvement of charge transfer transition. Their optical properties are highly dependent on molecular conformations. Complex with duryl spacer (12) exhibits more red shifted emission in polar solvents due to the enhanced charge transfer transition facilitated by twisted rigid geometry. In presence of fluoride and cyanide ions, the borondifluoride complexes are not stable. The anions concomitantly interact with tricoordinate boron as well as acac-BF2 unit to give rise to complex pattern of photoluminescence spectral changes during the titration experiment. The binding pathway and the possible species involved are established with the help of 1H, 19F and 11B NMR spectral studies in presence of the anions. Complexes 11 and 12 act as selective chemodosimetric sensors for fluoride and cyanide ions. Chapter 7 In this chapter, the synthesis and optical characterisations of triarylborane conjugated cyclometalated platinum complexes are discussed. A series of square planar platinum complexes are synthesised with different cyclometalating ligands. Complexes (13−18) exhibit a range of luminescence from green to red in solution as well as in the solid state. Their emission intensities are highly sensitive towards atmospheric oxygen suggesting that they originate from a triplet excited state. A maximum of 85% quantum yield is observed for complex 15 in solution state while complex 14 showed a maximum of 58% quantum yield in solid state. Complexes with rigid molecular conformation (14, 16 and 18) showed higher luminescence quantum yield than those having phenyl spacer (13, 15 and 17). The sterically encumbered boryl (-BMes2) group significantly reduces π-π stacking between the square planar entities. Thus, complexes 13−18 show bright luminescence in solid state compared to model complexes without boryl group. The effect of Lewis acidic boron center on luminescence behaviour is explored by fluoride binding studies. Chapter 8 This chapter is divided into two parts. Part-I describes the synthesis and optical characterisation of triarylborane conjugated cyclometalated iridium complexes (19−24). They are brightly luminescent in solution state with high sensitivity towards atmospheric oxygen. Complex 20 shows a highest quantum yield of 91%. Interestingly, under ambient atmospheric conditions, they exhibit a rare type of dual emission. Life time data suggest that the lower energy emission band originates from cyclometalated iridium based triplet excited state while higher energy emission band originates from boryl ased singlet excited state. Fluoride binding at the boron site results in luminescence quenching; evidently, tri-coordinate boron has a major contribution to the luminescence features of these iridium complexes. Part-II deals with synthesis of triarylborane conjugated pyrazole ligand (25) and its binuclear iridium complexes (26−28) in which two iridium centers are bridged by hydroxo as well as pyrazolato ligands. These binuclear iridium complexes exhibit higher luminescence quantum yield than TAB-acac-Iridium complexes (mononuclear complexes; part I). Binding of fluoride ions at the boron center has a minor impact on their luminescence nature. High sensitivity of their luminescence towards atmospheric oxygen indicates the involvement of triplet excited state in their emission process.

Les apports de l’économie industrielle à l’analyse concurrentielle des marchés de réseau et services numériques / The benefits of Industrial Organization in the competitive analysis of network industries and digital services

Karsenty, Adrien 11 December 2017 (has links)
Descripteurs : économie numérique, concurrence, plateformes, concentration, marché pertinent, publicité, externalités de réseau, média / This PhD thesis set the milestones that are relevant for the competitive analysis of markets based on network activities and digital products or services. This work counts three parts, designed as separate essays, and aims to appreciate the impact of the characteristics of these markets on their competitive dynamics. The first part of the thesis tackles the concentration issue of online platforms. We specify a model of two-sided market in order to appreciate the different levels of interdependence on online platforms linking on firms (or advertisers) on one side and audience or consumers on the other side. As a result, network effects (synergies and scale economies relating to the number of users) are such that any competitive advantage (first-mover advantage, better quality or market share…), as low as it can be, turns out to be durable. The second part deals with the “relevant market” delineation in horizontal mergers issue and suggest an application to the retail market for fixed broadband Internet access. We econometrically analyze the demand for broadband access in order to verify whether or not there exists a segmentation (or even a differentiation) of the demand depending on the access technologies that can be very fast broadband or regular broadband access technologies. The third part examines the effects of “ad-blocking” software on the media and content providers whose business model is based on free access. We also specify a model of two-sided market in order to appreciate the role that Internet service providers can play to internalize network effects and to curb congestion phenomena.

Applying the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development to Water management

Olivier, Hervé-Bazin, Carlo, Iacovino, Hanzi, Ren January 2009 (has links)
A strategic management of water is integral for any society aiming at moving towards sustainability. This thesis aims to provide a common understanding of how water management should be considered within sustainability constraints, using ‘backcasting’ from basic sustainability principles as a compass. With a common language, a constructive dialogue is then possible to unify all stakeholders to move together towards sustainability. To answer the research question “How can an interaction with water stakeholders be strategically developed to progress toward the service of water in a sustainable society”, a methodology based on Sustainability Life Cycle Assessment, the Template for Sustainable Product Development and Multi-Stakeholder Platforms has been utilised within one domestic and one industrial water user case study in Blekinge, Southern Sweden. In this locality, water is regarded as abundant in volume. Yet it was revealed that what is consumed by society is not water as such; but the purity of water. Within this context, opportunities to move towards sustainability have arisen and the case study organizations were able to utilise improvements in reporting and operations. Economic activity such as new infrastructure, pollutant trading schemes and product accreditation are amongst the many concepts identified as potential steps towards the service of water in a sustainable society.

De Min, Lyvane 02 December 2014 (has links)
The Lesser Antilles result of the slow westward subduction of the North and South American plate under the Caribbean plate (2 cm / year). At the latitude of the Guadeloupe archipelago and ~ 150 km to the west of the deformation front, the fore-arc basin of Marie-Galante forms a perched basin tilted to the pit and limited to the East by a shoal, the Spur Karukéra. At this latitude, Marie-Galante basin dominates the accretionary prism of Barbados and faces wrinkle Tiburon sweeping the area from North to South from the late Miocene. The sedimentary fill Basin Marie-Galante shows active deformation since at least ~ 30 million years. The aim of the work is to reconstruct the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the basin to provide new constraints on the overall understanding of the frontal subduction zone Lesser Antilles. This work relies on multibeam bathymetry data and high-resolution seismic reflection multi-traces acquired during campaigns KaShallow program. This database, supplemented by lower resolution of previous campaigns seismic profiles, provides a pseudo-3D coverage and four scales of resolution of the entire basin. ROV sampling and targeted core provided 40 samples in the main seismic units. Petrological analysis and biostratigraphic dating allow paleoenvironmental reconstructions from the upper Paleogene up Actuel. Seismic interpretation multiscale shows a sedimentary basin reaching ~ 4,5s double (~ 4500-5625 m) on a substrate pre-structured magma. This basin consists of 5 main sedimentary units (E-1, E1, E2, E3 and E4) divided into 13 units bounded by discontinuities 14 surfaces. The sequential organization of seismic units allows to highlight sequences 10 deposits of third order (S-1 to S9). The biostratigraphic calibration of all sequences able to offer a tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Eocene basin to Present. Thus, we distinguish four normal fault systems associated with three phases of extensions that control the architectural and sedimentary evolution of the basin. 1 / A system N050 ± 10 ° E inherited assets from the upper Paleogene, which controls the overall pelvic tilt towards the SSE. He is responsible for the formation of the escarpment Désirade about 4500 m elevation. The first extension is interpreted as resulting from the fragmentation of the fore-arc in response to the increase in the radius of curvature of subduction. 2 / A system N130 ° -N150 ° E, structuring across the Spur Karukéra, which controls sediment from the Miocene and marks the first phase of transverse extension arc. 3 / A system N160 ° E ° -N180 which segments Basin Marie-Galante in a sub-basin to the west and the Spur Karukéra in the East. This second extension, generally perpendicular to the margin, is accompanied by subsidence and reversing the polarity of the basin in response to his switch to the pit, beginning during the Middle Miocene and is ongoing in the East the basin. This long-term evolution of the forearc, concurrent with the decline in volcanic arc to the west, is considered as resulting from a basal erosion of the top plate. 4 / A system N090 ± 10 ° later E is located in the center of the basin and controlling the development of neritic carbonate platforms on certain blocks heads, such as Marie-Galante. This latest extension, parallel to the arc occurs in the basin from the lower Pliocene. It is superimposed on the expansion plan perpendicular to the fore-arc and is interpreted as the accommodation of the partitioning of deformation in response to the increasing obliquity front subduction north.

E-commerce platforms adapted for scalability and increased sales : A comparison between e-commerce platforms.

Bertilsson, Robin, Date, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
In this study 14 e-commerce platforms are compared based on their functionality. The functionality has been identified to increase sales and facilitate scalability. To rate the impact of the functions, e-tailors in the niche of clothing and accessories were asked to respond a questionnaire. To identify relevant functionality for both of the approaches, the researchers used literature. The functionality were used as a framework when comparing the 14 e-commerce platforms. This study indicates that all functions are not equal. Responsive design and multiple payment solutions are considered most critical and are directly linked to increased sales figures. For the e-retailers to achieve scalability, this study finds that purchasable add-ons and themes plays a big role. The e-commerce platforms were rated thanks to data collection and data analysis. Abantecart and Opencart both received high ratings regarding functionality and the ability to increase sales numbers and enable future expansions.

Marabastad : place and the individual - the individual in place

Molenaar, Nadia Franciska 23 November 2006 (has links)
In the north-western corner of inner-city Pretoria, South Africa, the business district of Marabastad stands as a prime example of the lack of humanised public space making in marginalised urban areas. Amidst the vibrant and spontaneous local community the open spaces in this urban landscape are left derelict and insufficient in providing for the needs of their users. In response to the obvious and unseen deficiencies of the area, this landscape architectural study aims to shape platforms of opportunity to support the struggling local community by building on existing social networks and, formal and informal, economical practices. The investigation and subsequent design of this dissertation are focussed around the making of an urban square that will encourage interaction between individuals as well as between the individual and his/her surroundings. / Dissertation (ML(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Architecture / unrestricted

Scheduling of Dense Linear Algebra Kernels on Heterogeneous Resources / Ordonnancement de noyaux d'algèbre linéaire dense sur ressources hétérogènes

Kumar, Suraj 12 April 2017 (has links)
Due to massive computation power of accelerators such as GPU, Xeon phi, multicore machines equipped with accelerators are becoming popular in High Performance Computing (HPC). The added complexity led to the development of different task-based runtime systems, which allow computations to be expressed as graphs of tasks and rely on runtime systems to schedule those tasks among all resources of the platform. The real challenge is to design efficient schedulers for such runtimes to make effective utilization of all resources. Developing good schedulers, even for a single hybrid node, and analyzing them can thus have a strong impact on the performance of current HPC systems. We consider the problem of scheduling dense linear algebra applications on fully hybrid platforms made of CPUs and GPUs. The relative performance of CPU and GPU highly depends on the sub-routine. For instance, GPUs are much more efficient to process matrix-matrix multiplications than matrix factorizations. In this thesis, we analyze the performance of static and dynamic scheduling strategies and we propose a set of intermediate strategies, by adding static (resp. dynamic) features into dynamic (resp. static) strategies. A resource centric dynamic scheduler, HeteroPrio, which is based on affinity between tasks and resources, has been proposed recently for a set of small independent tasks on two types of resources. We extend and analyze this scheduler for general task graphs first on two types of resources and then on more than two types of resources. Additionally, we provide approximation ratios and worst case examples of HeteroPrio for a set of independent tasks on different platform sizes.
