Análisis de resonancia portuaria: generación, transitoriedad, no linealidad y acoplamiento geométrico

Esta tesis doctoral se ha dedicado al estudio de la hidrodinámica asociada a los procesos de resonancia en dominios semi-encerrados. El esfuerzo fundamental se ha centrado en la caracterización de los elementos forzadores, las características no lineales del forzamiento y de la respuesta de los puertos, la transitoriedad del fenómeno y de la incidencia sobre la respuesta del potencial acoplamiento de la respuesta de recintos adyacentes. Es decir, la generación, la no linealidad, la transitoriedad y el acoplamiento geométrico. Los objetivos planteados son tres: 1) ampliar el conocimiento sobre el fenómeno; 2) mejorar la capacidad para reproducir el fenómeno a través de la aplicación de un modelo en elemento finito basado en las ecuaciones modificadas de Boussinesq Nwogu (1993), Liu & Woo (2004); 3) integrar toda la investigación, técnicas y herramientas elaboradas en una metodología capaz de mejorar sustancialmente la aproximación que se hace hoy en día al problema. Para ello, se hace uso de una metodología que integra la aproximación teórica para caracterizar las oscilaciones de baja frecuencia existentes en los registros instrumentales de oleaje tomando información de medidas en el campo, se plantea una exhaustiva campaña de modelado físico en laboratorio para diferentes características de oscilación resonante no lineal y acoplamiento geométrico, y finalmente se valida el modelo numérico con las series temporales obtenidas en laboratorio y con dos situaciones resonantes reales tomando series reales de onda larga atmosférica y onda larga vinculada a grupos de oleaje, encontrando excelentes correlaciones. / This Thesis is dedicated to study the hydrodynamic processes associated to the harbour resonance phenomena. The study was focused to the characterization of the transient, non-linear, and coupled effects associated to the forcing mechanisms and to the response of the oscillations outside and inside the harbour facilities. The aim of this thesis was divided into tree main branches: 1) increase the harbour resonance phenomena knowledge; 2) improve the capacity to reproduce the phenomena through the implementation of an advanced finite-element numerical model, based on the modified Boussinesq equations Nwogu (1993), Liu & Woo (2004); and 3) Integrate the different techniques and tools into a methodology, able to improve the approximation of any future harbour resonance study. For these, first a spectral analysis has been developed to characterize the infragravity waves at the entrance of short wave field data, second an extensive laboratory campaign was proposed for different degrees of non-linearity and coupled resonance oscillations, and third the numerical model was validated with the laboratory data, as well as data measured in two real harbours, for both atmospheric long wave and bound long wave acting as forcing mechanism, obtaining excellent correlations.

Maritime strategy in Pakistan

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / As a maritime nation, Pakistan has not been able to effectively exploit the sea and its resources. Decades of neglect have hampered the development of the maritime sector, which in turn has hurt both economic growth and the national security of the country. While seaborne trade is the backbone of Pakistan's economy, the domestic shipping and shipbuilding industries are in disarray. The exploitation of offshore natural resources is restricted to coastal fisheries. Despite its animosity with neighboring India, Pakistan has until recently relied on two colocated ports at Karachi, which would be a vulnerable target in any war. The continental mindset of the policymakers has affected the development of the Pakistan Navy as an effective element of the military strategy. This thesis argues that development of the maritime sector is important for both economic growth and the national security of Pakistan. In economic terms, the maritime sector can diversify the economic base and stimulate Pakistan's economic growth. The development of the Pakistan Navy both as a credible conventional and strategic force is important for protection of growing economic maritime interests against predation and coercion and also necessary to safeguard the strategic interests of the country. / Lieutenant Commander, Pakistan Navy

A Framework for Air Dispersion Modeling – A Hypothetical Case of Port Operations

One of the primary modes for pollutants to reach the human body is through their release into the atmosphere and dispersion in the nearby areas. This makes air emissions one of the important components of an environmental assessment. They are frequently of interest to the people living in the vicinity of the site. The analysis carried out in this research provides a framework for atmospheric dispersion modeling of air pollutants using AERMOD, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) approved regulatory model, for modeling port related emissions. There are various sources of emissions from the ports, however for this study, emissions from roadways, small equipment, and marine related sources are considered. AERMOD was used to estimate ambient pollutant concentrations of selective criteria pollutants such as NOx, SO2, CO and PM10 from a hypothetical port.

Our Side of the Water : Political Culture in the Swedish colony of St Barthélemy 1800–1825

The small island of St Barthélemy was a Swedish colony 1784–1878 and saw its greatest population growth and trade during the turn of the nineteenth century. This was because of Gustavia, the Swedish founded free port, which attracted mariners from the Caribbean, North America and Europe. Their goal was to become Swedish subjects, as Swedish neutrality provided a benefit during the various wars at this time between France, Great Britain and the United States. As these mariners changed their national allegiance from their country of origin to Sweden, questions about their political rights emerged. The makeup, as well as the role, of the local council became a contested issue between native and naturalized Swedes. This conflict, as well as many other local and global issues, was discussed in various mediums. I have examined petitions, the newspaper The Report of Saint Bartholomew and discussions within the council, to create an understanding of how political expression was formed by the population, as well as controlled by Swedish administrators. This analysis has been performed through an intersectional framework considering gender, race and ethnicity. My study shows that while most native and naturalized Swedes believed in input from the population, they had different perceptions of what the purpose of this input was. The Swedish administration saw the political participation of the naturalized population as purely advisory, without any obligation to perform its wishes, which the population resented and protested. Gender played a significant role in the formation of political expression, as masculinity was essential to the identity of white men and free men of colour as political subjects. Yet ethnicity, in terms of place of birth, had no significant impact among the free population’s political identity, although it did render them politically unreliable in the eye of native Swedish administration.

Arqueologia de uma cidade portuária: Cananéia, séculos XIX-XX / Archaeology of a port city: Cananéia, 19-20th centuries

Esta tese de doutorado tem como objetivo mapear e cadastrar as estruturas portuárias do vale do Ribeira (SP) especialmente aquelas situadas no município de Cananéia que forneçam informações sobre o período de 1850-1950, época em que teria se estabelecido um modo capitalista de produção na região alicerçado na lavoura comercial do arroz. Essa abordagem se justifica pela necessidade de se avaliar as contradições existentes entre o discurso e a sociedade concreta. Hoje a região é conhecida por suas belezas naturais, patrimônio histórico mas, paradoxalmente, é a mais pobre do estado de São Paulo. No entanto, as estruturas portuárias, desde o século XIX até hoje apresentam grande dinâmica construtiva. Como explicar esse conflito? Observando os contextos através de uma Arqueologia Marítima embasada no materialismo histórico. Esses contextos foram delimitados através do mapeamento, cadastramento e prospecção extensiva de estruturas, bens e locais relativos à evolução de embarcações, dos portos e da dinâmica comercial expressa no ambiente urbano. O resultado desse trabalho foi o entendimento de que duas modificações causaram grandes transformações na dinâmica produtiva de todo o vale do Ribeira. A primeira delas foi a transição da lavoura comercial para pesca e para o turismo. A segunda foi a inversão do sentido do fluxo das mercadorias gerado pela substituição do transporte marítimo, em primeiro lugar, pelo conjunto navegação fluvial/ ferrovia, depois pelo transporte rodoviário. Esse processo colocou os lucros nas mãos de novos agentes econômicos, mas manteve a produção do discurso como primazia dos antigos donos do poder. / The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to map and register the ports of the Ribeiras valley (SP) especially those situated in Cananéia that provide information about the period 1850-1950, when a capitalist production mode based on the trade of rice was developed in the region. The justification for this kind of approach is the necessity to evaluate the contradictions between the speech and the real society. Nowadays the region is known by its natural resources and historical buildings but at the same time it is the poorest region of São Paulo state. However, since the 19th century until today the ports have had a great structural dynamics. How to explain this conflict? By observing the context through a Maritime Archaeology based on the historical materialism. These contexts have been delimitated with mapping, registering and extensive surveying of the structures, patrimony and places related to evolution of water craft, ports and the commercial dynamics in urban environment. The result of the research was the understanding that two changes have caused huge transformation in the productive dynamics of the entire Ribeiras valley. The first one was the transition from commercial agriculture to commercial fishing and tourism. The second one was the inversion of the direction of the trade caused by the substitution of maritime transportation, first by river transportation/ railroad, secondly by the road transportation. This process put the profits in the hands of new economical agents, but kept the production of the speech with the old power owners.

O presente trabalho propõe a execução de ensaios de medição do número de swirl em bancada de fluxo em regime permanente, com a utilização de um dispositivo modular e dutos de admissão do cabeçote de um motor diesel produzidos via prototipagem rápida (PR). A medição do número de swirl com dutos produzidos via PR, traz como principais vantagens: reprodutibilidade dos ensaios, facilidade de simular e mensurar o número de swirl dos potenciais desvios no processo de fundição ou usinagem, além da redução no tempo para o desenvolvimento de novas geometrias dos dutos de admissão. O trabalho é experimental e uma unidade do cabeçote estudado foi encaminhado para o laboratório da EPUSP e o número de swirl medido para posterior comparação dos dados. Após a fase inicial de aquisição de dados e ajustes no projeto do dispositivo, essa unidade do cabeçote foi seccionada e digitalizada para que a geometria interna fosse reproduzida via prototipagem rápida. Os dutos de admissão foram montados no dispositivo modular para a realização dos testes em bancada. Todos os testes foram realizados no mesmo equipamento e com o mesmo sistema de controle, com o intuito de reduzir o número de variáveis externas na aquisição de dados. Quando realizou-se a comparação das médias dos resultados do número de swirl do cabeçote e do dispositivo modular com o uso de prototipagem rápida não foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significantes. O método proposto representou o escoamento de ar da admissão do modelo de cabeçote analisado. / The present work proposes to execute steady state bench test, swirl number measurements, using a modular device and cylinder head intake ports from a diesel engine manufactured via rapid prototype (RP) techniques. Swirl number measurements with intake ports produced by RP, bring as main advantages: Tests reproducibility, easy to measure the swirl number variances in consequence of potential casting or machining process deviations besides of time reduction to the development of new intake ports geometry. The research is experimental and one sample of the investigated cylinder head was sent to the laboratory and the swirl number was measured for later results comparison. After the early development phase of data acquisition and design improvements, this cylinder head sample was then sectioned and digitalized as to know to have the same internal geometry in the intake ports produced via rapid prototype. The intake ports were assembled in the modular device to perform bench tests. All tests were performed in the same rig and with the same control system with aiming to reduce the external variables during data acquisition. When the mean results analysis was performed in order to compare the results between cylinder head and modular device using rapid prototype, no statistically significant changes were found. The proposed method represented the investigated cylinder head´s intake air flow.

Uma compreensão aprofundada da dinâmica de competição portuária é particularmente importante dado o contexto atual do setor, que orienta à outorga de novos portos e terminais no Brasil, à luz da Nova Lei dos Portos, Lei Nº 12.815 de 2013. A avaliação dos reais impactos decorrentes do aumento de capacidade portuária em cada região será atividade fundamental para que, por um lado, o poder público oriente a alocação efetiva de recursos, sem prejudicar a operação dos complexos existentes; e para que a iniciativa privada, por sua vez, possa compreender os impactos dos possíveis novos empreendimentos sobre as suas operações e delinear estratégias comerciais compatíveis com o novo cenário competitivo. A partir de extensa revisão bibliográfica e da aplicação de técnicas a casos específicos, o presente trabalho detalha a dinâmica competitiva entre terminais de contêineres e avalia criticamente seis métodos utilizados para identificar a existência de competição: correlação de market share, comparação de taxas de ocupação, sobreposição de escalas marítimas, comparação de custos logísticos terrestres, representatividade da região de influência contestável e existência de poder de mercado sobre a região de influência. Dos seis métodos analisados, dois apresentam conclusões fulminantes para a questão, embora sua aplicação demande grande volume de informações; um é assertivo em condições normais de distribuição geográfica de cargas; dois apresentam condições necessárias, porém não suficientes para a identificação de competição; e um deve ser aplicado com ressalvas, uma vez que pode levar a conclusões equivocadas. / A further comprehension of port competition dynamics is particularly important in the current context of port sector in Brazil, which guides to the granting of new ports and maritime terminals, based on the Law no. 12.815 of 2013, the New Law of Ports. The evaluation of the real impacts arising from port capacity expansion in each region will be a crucial activity. One the one hand, the authorities must ensure the ideal resource allocation, while safeguarding existing terminals. On the other, the private initiative must comprehend the impacts of new terminals upon their operations, in order to draw up new commercial strategies compatible with the new competitive scenario. This study, based on an extensive bibliographic review and on the application of techniques to specific cases, details the competition dynamics among container terminals and evaluates critically six methods that allow its identification: market shares correlation, occupancy rates comparison, ship calls overlapping, terrestrial logistic costs comparison, contestable influence region representativeness and the existence of significant market power. Among the six analyzed methods, two present fulminant conclusions about competition existence, but they depend on a large volume of well detailed information; one shows assertive conclusion regarding normal condition of cargo geographical distribution; other two represent a necessary, although not sufficient, condition for competition and one must be used under reservations, once it may lead to erroneous conclusions.

Influência do posicionamento dos dutos de admissão de um cabeçote fundido e usinado no resultado swirl. / Influence of the intake ports positioning of cast and machined cylinder head on the swirl result.

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a influência sobre o número de swirl e desempenho do motor diesel a partir de cabeçotes fabricados com variação no posicionamento relativo dos dutos de admissão em duas direções perpendiculares. Inicialmente definiu-se que o valor a ser deslocado seria de 1 milímetro, e então para cada combinação entre os dutos de admissão curto e longo deveria ser fabricado um número mínimo de seis cabeçotes para posteriores ensaios em bancada com dinamômetro. Após a fundição fabricar as nove combinações definidas, sendo uma delas com os eixos em suas condições nominais, isto é, sem o deslocamento de um milímetro, obtiveram-se um total de 60 cabeçotes. Os cabeçotes foram então controlados em máquina tridimensional, usinados e montados todos os seus componentes e enviados para a medição do número de swirl em máquina desenvolvida especialmente para este teste. Para cada cabeçote mediu-se o número de swirl duas vezes, e em seguida cada uma das nove combinações foram ensaiadas no mesmo dinamômetro e avaliados os respectivos parâmetros: consumo específico de combustível, curva de torque e emissão de poluentes. Para cada combinação mediu-se a curva de torque duas vezes e mediu-se três vezes o ciclo de emissões com treze pontos (ESC). Nos resultados de swirl, três combinações apresentaram-se fora dos limites da tolerância, uma abaixo do mínimo da tolerância em 22,7% e as outras duas além do máximo da tolerância em respectivamente 18,2% e 17,8%. Nos resultados de dinamômetro, nenhuma combinação se apresentou fora dos limites estabelecidos para o modelo de motor ensaiado nos seguintes parâmetros: consumo específico de combustível, torque e emissões de CO, HC, MP e NOx. / The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the influence on the swirl number and the engine diesel performance based on cylinder heads produced with variation on relative positioning of inlet ports in two perpendicular directions. Firstly, it was defined that the value to be displaced would be 1 millimeter, and then for each combination between the short and the long inlet ports should be produced a minimum of six cylinder heads for further testing on the dynamometer. After the foundry production of the defined nine combinations, one of them having the axis in their nominal positions, i.e. without the displacement of 1 millimeter, a total of 60 cylinder heads were obtained. These cylinder heads were measured in a tridimensional machine, machined and all of their components were assembled and their swirl number were measured in the machine developed specially for this method. For each cylinder head the swirl number was measured twice and after that all nine combinations were performed at the same dynamometer and the following parameters were evaluated: fuel consumption, torque curve and pollutants emission. For each combination the torque curve was measured twice and the thirteen point\'s emissions cycle (ESC) was measured three times. Concerning the swirl results, three combinations ended up out of the tolerance limits, one of them as 22,7% below the minimum tolerance and the other two as 18,2% and 17,8% respectively over the maximum tolerance. Regarding the dynamometer results, no combination ended up out of defined tolerances for the kind of engine tested in the following parameters: fuel consumption specific, torque and emissions of CO, HC, PM and NOx.

A simulação analógica das manobras não tripuladas de navios em modelo físico tridimensional, nas operações de atracação, desatracação e acessibilidade aos Terminais Portuários, consiste numa importante ferramenta para avaliação da segurança aquaviária. Avaliam-se situações de risco, além de proporcionar ganhos de produtividade, como otimização dos procedimentos de manobras e abertura de novas janelas temporais operacionais. Com o uso de diferentes modelos de navios rádio-controlados, manobrados por Pilotos reais de Associação de Práticos do porto em estudo, equipados com sistema de rastreamento e possibilidade da utilização de até quatro rebocadores simultaneamente, viabiliza-se a realização de uma gama de manobras que demandariam, dependendo da escala temporal do modelo, uma ordem de grandeza a mais de tempo em um navio real, bem como inúmeros riscos à segurança da navegação. Neste trabalho foi apresentada uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema, seguida da análise crítica de diferentes estudos de casos realizados, estudados no SIAMA (Simulador analógico de manobras não tripuladas) do LHEPUSP Laboratório de Hidráulica da Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo, enfatizando-se os ganhos operacionais obtidos (segurança e produtividade). / The analogical simulation of ships manoeuvres of berthing, departure and approach in tridimensional physical model for Port Terminals purposes, has been considered a valuable technical tool for port operational planning and safety improvings. Indeed, it is possible to evaluate the manoeuvring risks of new operational scenarios or windows, contributing for the vessel and berth security, Using different radio-controlled vessel models, with tracking system, manoeuvred with tug aid by Pilots of the Port local Association and evaluated by port masters, advisors stackholders; it is possible to perform much more manoeuvring tests, with no risk than real tests, with time tests about ten times lesser. A detailed bibliographical review about this subject was made, followed by a critical analysis of different case studies performed and studied by the SIAMA (Analogical Manoeuvring Simulator in portuguese) of the LHEPUSP Hydraulic Laboratory of São Paulo University Polytechnic School in portuguese, emphasizing the operational improvements get.
