Comparative Syntactic Analysis of Predicative Possession and Transitive 'Need'

Gotah, Selikem 01 August 2019 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the debate on the link between a transitive verb corresponding to 'need' and the verb of possession in the world’s languages. Specifically, I analyze data mainly from Ewe and three Ghana-Togo Mountain (GTM) languages; Likpe, Tafi, and Logba. First, I report that Ewe expresses predicative possession using a wide range of structures. Prominent among these structures is an intransitive locative construction in which the possessee c-commands the possessor. This characterization situates Ewe in the B-languages group of the have/be dichotomy. Second, I demonstrate, drawing on compelling pieces of evidence from object shift in nominalization, object shift in inceptive aspectual constructions, object extraction in wh-movement, and the nominative-accusative paradigm, that Ewe has a transitive verb 'hiã' corresponding to 'need'. These facts pose a challenge to Harves and Kayne’s (2012) claim that all languages that have a transitive verb corresponding to need are languages that have an accusative-Case-assigning verb of possession. Third, I have shown that predicative possessees are not licensed in like manner as transitive objects, contra Halpert and Diercks’ (2012) prediction that all languages that have a transitive verb corresponding to 'need' are languages in which predicative possessees are licensed in the same manner as transitive objects. Fourth, I show that data from the three GTM languages also pose a challenge to the predictions in Harves & Kayne (2012) and Halpert & Diercks (2016). Finally, I suggest that the presence or absence of a transitive verb corresponding to 'need' is not necessarily contingent on a transitive verb of possession, and therefore, the optionality of a transitive 'need' in H-languages should be extended to B-languages.

O predicativo e seu papel modalizador / Predicative and his modalizator profile

Roberta de Souza Borges 09 April 2012 (has links)
This paper aims to discuss about the expressive semantic-predicative potential, and his modalizator profile. We see this syntactic function as a modalizating element "in essence, because, in many cases, the speaker can show his/her opinion using it, connected with lexical convenient choices. In many parts of the dissertation, semantics and stylistics can better explain the phenomenon of predicative modal form. Syntax does not make it herself. We still talk about predicative topicalization as a modalizator resource and also talk about the concept of "marking". We also use heterogeneous corpus examples to show that predicative, topicalizated or not, works as a modalizator, semantic and expressive resource

Lexique-grammaire des constructions converses en a da/ a primi en roumain / Lexicon-grammar of converse constructions in a da/ a primi in Romanian

Ciocanea, Cristiana 12 July 2011 (has links)
This work on a da/ a primi converse constructions contributes to the creation of the lexicon-grammar of Romanian. The tables DP1 and DP2 are the product of an analysis of sentences containing the support verb 'a da' and V-n (predicative nouns associated to verbs) or Npa (autonomous predicative nouns). The particularities of Romanian make the description of syntactic properties interesting especially when comparing this language to French. The dissimetries in collocations as well as those regarding determiners and variants of support verbs a da/ donner result in difficulties one encounters in the domains of traductology and teaching French as a foreign language

Lärares dilemman

Räihä, Helge January 2008 (has links)
The topic of the present dissertation is teachers’ everyday dilemmas and the use of language to deal with these dilemmas. The concept of dilemma is compared to the concept of risk and the concept of paradox. The theoretical background consists of sociological systems theory and linguistic pragmatic theory. The empirical data consist of observations of teachers in everyday situations. The theoretical and empirical approaches are used to illuminate each other. Teachers’ ways of dealing with dilemmas are described as use of linguistic resources. Results show that dilemmas are complex social phenomenon that include global system media, trust and language use. Teachers face dilemmas as unpredicted clashes of conflicting expectations. The conflicting expectations come into view as global system media and local trust. The resources required in the constructing of trust and rationality shows how teachers are dealing with dilemmas. Teachers’ ways of dealing with dilemmas come into view as use of linguistic resources for logic and modality.

Le nom fois et les expressions dérivées : étude sémantique et pragmatique dans la phrase et dans le discours / The Name Fois and Derived Expressions Semantic and Pragmatic Study in Sentence and Discurse

Guiraud, Anne-Marie 12 June 2012 (has links)
We aim in this search to define the significations of N (name) fois through the main constructions using it in modern French, and to explain how it helped in forming the derived expressions autrefois, des fois (que), parfois, quelquefois, toutefois, une fois (que). From a lexical point of view, the word fois is a feminine substantive, and, built with a determiner, it forms a nominal group (NG). The N fois denotes an occurrences counting, that means discurse units counting, mostly verbal process or predicates. Therefore it concerns liunguistic units and that's why fois is used in several contexts. We organized the main constructions according to the determiner used in NG fois. Firstly, NG built with cardinal adjectives or quantifiers + fois allow counting language occurrences and function as a quantification adverb ; if the occurrences are verbal process, they bring besides a temporal notion with iterative or frequential value. With other déterminers (definite and indefinite article, demonstrative adjective, universal quantifiers tous les and chaque), fois is a temporal name on the way to standardisation. The derived expressions change semantically and come to an adverbial form prior other transformations. This concludes to identify the group of quantification adverbs, the former one, which helped the formation of derived expressions, and a newer group in which fois is a temporal name as jour, instant or moment.

A concordÃncia de nÃmero em predicativos do sujeito: variaÃÃo linguÃstica em Fortaleza / The number agreement in subject predicatives: linguistic variation in Fortaleza

BÃrbara Amaral de Andrade Furtado 14 August 2017 (has links)
This work aims, primarily, to describe and analyze the occurrences of number agreement variations in subject predicative in speakers from the city of Fortaleza. For that purpose, we adopt Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1966; 1972; 2001) as the theoretical basis. We set as a starting the knowledge of noun agreement in subject predicatives in the normative grammar in the Portuguese language described in the grammars by Cunha; Cintra (1985) and Bechara (1989). We adopt as basis for our research studies on number agreement in Brazilian Portuguese realized by Scherre (1988), Scherre; Naro (1998) and Scherre (2014. For data gathering, we used the NORPOFOR (Norma Oral do PortuguÃs Popular de Fortaleza) project, from which we selected a sample of 48 informants stratified by sex (male and female), years of educations (0-8 years and 9-11 years) and type of register (informal (D2) and formal (EF)). For the statistical analysis of data, we utilized the program GoldVarb X (SANKOFF; TAGLIAMONTE; SMITH, 2005), which provides statistical results for spoken language for data analysis, from a binary model of dependent variable, selecting the variables which are shown to be statistically significant to the studied phenomenon. Next, we applied the subjective reaction test to 300 students of several courses in the three main areas of studies â Human Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences â at Universidade Federal do CearÃ. From this data collection, we investigated how the speakers from Fortaleza the variable phenomenon in question. The factors selected as statistically relevant were the speakers sex, formal parallelism, formal characteristics of the verb in the sentence and formal characteristics of the subject in the sentence. We have concluded, in general, that female speakers tend to be more conservative in relation to number agreement in subject predicatives, confirming our hypothesis, based on the theories by Labov (2001), and the results obtained by Scherre (1991) and Dias (1996). We also concluded that the type of register, formal or informal, although not selected by the statistical program as a relevant variable, is shown to be relevant to some independent variables, especially those related to phonic salience, such as tonicity of the regular items and morphophonological process of plural formation. With the subjective reaction tests, we realized that, contrary to our hypothesis, students from the Physical Sciences tend to be more linguistically conservative than those of Biological and Human Sciences, regarding the phenomenon studied by us. We can also affirm that more salient items, both phonically and by being less usual, tend to be evaluated more negativelly in their plural form without explicit plural marks. In general, we understand that we linguistic evaluation tests indicate that the lack of number agreement in subject predicatives in the city of Fortaleza is negatively evaluated, even in informal situations.

Recherches sur l’opposition entre ser et estar en espagnol : historique de la question, et application à l’étude des variations dans leurs emplois en espagnol spontané contemporain au Mexique / Research on the opposition between "ser" and "estar" in spanish : a review of its treatment and an empirical study of the variation in their use in spontaneous contemporary spanish in Mexico

Garcia Markina, Yekaterina 04 December 2013 (has links)
This empirical and synchronic study focuses on the actual uses of Spanish copulas ser and estar in predicative constructions in Mexican Spanish. The constructions studied here are those which admit both copulas. These constructions have been traditionally distinguished following Carlson’s (1977) Individual-level Predicates and Stage-level Predicates. Nevertheless, we have noticed that some of the occurrences of estar in Mexican Spanish cannot be explained by the Carlsonian distinction. This copula seems to be undergoing an extension process in some of the varieties of Latin American Spanish. Authors have studied Spanish copulas from different approaches and perspectives. To better understand the complexity of the matter, we have established a critical history of this issue. Then, following a discovery process based mostly on our native speaker’s intuition, we analyze the question applying a comparative experimental task between Mexican Spanish and European Spanish speakers, which shows important internal variations among Mexican native speakers. Finally, we propose a multifactorial analysis of our “natural”, i.e. spontaneous, written and oral corpora from different sources, which allows us to compare different patterns, and to identify which ones are significant for choosing estar. To conclude, the various potential semantic values entailed by copula choice are analyzed.

Adjectif en Persan : étude morphosyntaxique et sémantique / Persian adjective : morphosyntactic and semantic study

Mirmarashi, Fatemeh 21 October 2011 (has links)
Our study begins with a brief presentation of the Persian language and the parts of speech followed by the demonstration of the Persian adjective in the contemporary grammar and to look for this vague notion in the previous studies. Given that the Persian adjective has no inflected marking, this search aims to identifying distinctive criteria to distinguish the adjectival category from the other existing categories (in particular nominal and verbal). The results of this work conduct us towards a morphosyntactic and semantic study which allowing us to conclude that the Persian adjective is a subcategory of the nominal category.

Anomaly detection in rolling element bearings via two-dimensional Symbolic Aggregate Approximation

Harris, Bradley William 26 May 2013 (has links)
Symbolic dynamics is a current interest in the area of anomaly detection, especially in mechanical systems.  Symbolic dynamics reduces the overall dimensionality of system responses while maintaining a high level of robustness to noise.  Rolling element bearings are particularly common mechanical components where anomaly detection is of high importance.  Harsh operating conditions and manufacturing imperfections increase vibration innately reducing component life and increasing downtime and costly repairs.  This thesis presents a novel way to detect bearing vibrational anomalies through Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (SAX) in the two-dimensional time-frequency domain.  SAX reduces computational requirements by partitioning high-dimensional sensor data into discrete states.  This analysis specifically suits bearing vibration data in the time-frequency domain, as the distribution of data does not greatly change between normal and faulty conditions. Under ground truth synthetically-generated experiments, two-dimensional SAX in conjunction with Markov model feature extraction is successful in detecting anomalies (> 99%) using short time spans (< 0.1 seconds) of data in the time-frequency domain with low false alarms (< 8%).  Analysis of real-world datasets validates the performance over the commonly used one-dimensional symbolic analysis by detecting 100% of experimental anomalous vibration with 0 false alarms in all fault types using less than 1 second of data for the basis of 'normality'. Two-dimensional SAX also demonstrates the ability to detect anomalies in predicative monitoring environments earlier than previous methods, even in low Signal-to-Noise ratios. / Master of Science
