Introverse Arrangements: Rediscovering the Typewritings of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt

Champion, Savannah M. 28 October 2022 (has links)
This thesis aims to understand Wolf-Rehfeldt’s place in the unofficial art world of the GDR by examining her work in light of her status as a clerical worker with social rather than professional ties to the art world. She stands out within the East German Mail Art context, not just for her inventive use of a typewriter to create abstract figurations, but for the way she used it to interject considerations of gender and power into a network of artists overwhelmingly dominated by men with her open-ended Typewritings.” Through historical research and close readings of her work, this study uncovers how Wolf-Rehfeldt's Typewritings indicate that Mail Art was a space to share stylistic experiments, and her sophisticated treatment of feminist and abstract themes. My research reveals that the record of who was involved in the GDR’s experimental art scene is incomplete, with still more to be found. A deeper look at Wolf-Rehfeldt’s background confirmed that she was more enmeshed in Mail Art than the historical record indicates, suggesting the need for further study on the influence and involvement of women in the movement.

López Izquierdo, María Angeles 06 June 2024 (has links)
[EN] Experimental animation is developping in festivals, demonstrations and exhibitions and it is closely joined to the graphic, pictorical, musical and photographical productions. Definitively it is used as artistic expression medium. Therefore we should see animation as a new support of broadcasting the work, according to the new ways of seeing and understanding the world and the needs of the society. Analyzing this new support we discover that the techniques employed are so different and diverse like the artists self that use them, finding between them techniques like painting or engraving, both possessors of a wide range of procedures and outcomes. Focussing our attention on engraving, we discover that, for a group of experimental animators, this is the base for their produccions. Some of them influenced by the pioneers Len Lye en Norman McLaren, use the technique in its purest essence, some others use their aesthetics and characteristics as a starting point in order to develop their productions along with other techniques. Engraving offers the possibility of working with different techniques attending to his mould and printing, considering the technical procedures, the printing methodes and the manipulation and intervention of the printings as a wide range of new possibilities. Our Thesis pose the reality of experimental animated engraving, offering the artists, each day more in the mixed media, new possibilities of creation. / López Izquierdo, MA. (2006). Visceral creativity : digestion, earthly melancholy, and materiality in the graphic arts of early modern France and the German-speaking lands (c. 1530-1675)

Leclerc de la Verpillière, Lorraine January 2019 (has links)
Building on recent scholarship in the history of art which has started to reappraise the meaning of grotesque and scatological motifs, this thesis examines how digestion was conceived of as a model of creation, and how this was translated visually. Renaissance creativity was increasingly modelled on a series of natural processes like digestion, following a trend in favour of Aristotelian psychology. However, it has been largely overlooked in comparison to the bleeding, the pneumatic, and especially the procreative natural models, which have been extensively studied. The central argument of this thesis is that digestion constituted an alternative-albeit less 'decorous'-model of creation, denoting the intervention of a more 'earthbound' ingenium. I argue that this model was used by certain classes of artists as an acknowledgement of a strong engagement with materials and of the labour of a round-the-clock imagination. Goldsmithing and printmaking are artistic professions whereby the artistic process was often considered as an act of 'soiling' oneself, both in the sense of the body and the phantasia. This thesis focuses on a period spanning c. 1530 to 1675, from Rabelais' works to the facetious printer Jacques Lagniet. It mines a corpus of little-studied textual and visual sources from the north of the Alps, examining a continuity between France and the German lands: geographical areas which both had an especially pronounced 'culture of excretion'. From a broader perspective, this research responds to a widespread scholarly call for more attention to the organic soul and the lower body, nuancing the alleged hegemony of the brain and the higher senses throughout history. It seeks to modify the perception of early modern artists and viewers as cerebral intellectuals, presenting them as individuals who also 'thought with their guts'.

Transfer záalpských krajinných motivů v grafice do vybraných děl italských rytců na začátku 16. století / Transfer of transalpine landscape motifs in graphic art into selected works of Italian engravers of the early 16th century

Veselá, Markéta January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the phenomenon of the transfer of the transalpine landscape motifs in graphic art into the works of Italian engravers at the beginning of the six- teenth century, and by using detailed analysis of these prints lead to a decision as to why these transfers occur so frequently, mainly in the years 1500-1520. Because only brief mentions of these transfers are found in the available literature on this topic, and then often only as a statement, I decided to tackle this phenomenon in the context of landscape specifications. In the introductory chapter there will be a concise overview of the cultural situation of the humanistic society, including its assumptions and a brief evolution of depiction of landscape art. Additionally there will be a chapter about the terminology used, which in addition to clarifying the terminology also helps to further the description of the proce- ss itself. The main part will of course be a chapter dedicated into selected items. There will also be descriptions of the graphic works of selected Italian engravers, especially in the comparison of transferred landscape motifs from works by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden. Analy- sis of the individual prints will focus on elements transmitted in the background of the works. Iconography...

Romero Cubero, Priscilla 17 January 2022 (has links)
[EN] This thesis is entitled In the skin of latexgraphy: a creative proposal for current graphics. Research that brings together the differential contributions of latexgraphy as a unique printmaking technique in the field of expanded graphics in contemporary art. We start from the artistic creation in relation to the notion of the body, and properly of the skin as a symbolic border between our being and the world; surface in whose imprint the graphic memory of our existence and identity is recorded, the same that thanks to the implementation of our technique, we can transmute into an expressive material, within the framework of a collaborative creative process between the public and us. In the first part, we elaborate an introduction to the technique of latexgraphy, its meaning and practice, contemplating the most relevant concepts and the systematization of the process through the identification, description and justification of its variables. Later we study the antecedents and theoretical-practical axes of the discourses of expanded graphics, with which we identify our research, to finally list the differential contributions that, from latexgraphy, we make to the current artistic field. In a second part we make an approach to the poetic reflections that from latexgraphic practice we have woven around the concepts of the body, its image and the metaphors of the skin, from an interdisciplinary perspective combining both the contributions of artistic references and the approaches that from philosophy, sociology, anthropology and medicine are given to the concepts in question, from the mid-twentieth century to the present day in the West. Finally, the third part is dedicated to the artistic research included in the corpus of own work, where we present the results obtained from the Embodied Memory project, an individual exhibition conceptualized and executed within the framework of this thesis, as well as the latest advances made in relation to latexgraphy, in the pieces developed during the year 2021. / Romero Cubero, P.
