Intrusion detection techniques in wireless local area networksGill, Rupinder S. January 2009 (has links)
This research investigates wireless intrusion detection techniques for detecting attacks on IEEE 802.11i Robust Secure Networks (RSNs). Despite using a variety of comprehensive preventative security measures, the RSNs remain vulnerable to a number of attacks. Failure of preventative measures to address all RSN vulnerabilities dictates the need for a comprehensive monitoring capability to detect all attacks on RSNs and also to proactively address potential security vulnerabilities by detecting security policy violations in the WLAN. This research proposes novel wireless intrusion detection techniques to address these monitoring requirements and also studies correlation of the generated alarms across wireless intrusion detection system (WIDS) sensors and the detection techniques themselves for greater reliability and robustness. The specific outcomes of this research are: A comprehensive review of the outstanding vulnerabilities and attacks in IEEE 802.11i RSNs. A comprehensive review of the wireless intrusion detection techniques currently available for detecting attacks on RSNs. Identification of the drawbacks and limitations of the currently available wireless intrusion detection techniques in detecting attacks on RSNs. Development of three novel wireless intrusion detection techniques for detecting RSN attacks and security policy violations in RSNs. Development of algorithms for each novel intrusion detection technique to correlate alarms across distributed sensors of a WIDS. Development of an algorithm for automatic attack scenario detection using cross detection technique correlation. Development of an algorithm to automatically assign priority to the detected attack scenario using cross detection technique correlation.

The appraisal of transport infrastructure projects in the municipal sphere of government in South Africa, with reference to the city of TshwaneSchutte, I. C. (Ignatius Christiaan), 1949- 11 1900 (has links)
The annual budget cycle in urban road/transport authorities by implication requires transport infrastructure projects to be ranked in terms of their relative value, to enable project selection by starting from the most deserving proposal. This follows from the fact that the total cost of feasible projects practically always exceeds available funds, signalling the need for some kind of selection protocol. Cost benefit analysis (CBA), when applied in a narrow sense, is not suitable for this purpose as it focuses on economic efficiency only. Attempts to broaden it have been criticized by some scholars. Although the diversity of impacts points to a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) approach, this is considered unscientific in certain quarters; at best, its practical value needs to be demonstrated. In the case of the City of Tshwane (CoT), problems with current project appraisal are evident in that different methods – none of which is defensible – are used, sometimes resulting in rankings that are contradictory.
This thesis therefore attempts the following: (a) to develop a basic approach that combines the best elements of traditional methods; (b) to customize this approach to the specific context and needs of road authorities in the municipal sphere of government, using CoT as an example; and (c) to demonstrate the application of the resulting appraisal framework, utilizing appropriate decision-support software for this purpose.
Recommendations include the following: An appraisal framework should combine CBA and MCA by adopting an overall MCA approach with economic efficiency – focusing on the optimal allocation of scarce resources – as one of the decision criteria. For completeness‟ sake, three additional decision criteria are deemed necessary: equity (focusing on income distribution impacts); sustainability (focusing on environmental impacts); and compatibility (focusing on the alignment of projects with stated goals and objectives). This framework may well apply to road authorities in other spheres of government – the optimum application in each case will depend on the composition of the relevant decision-making team. The inherent nature of project appraisal requires a two-phased approach in all cases: the evaluation of mutually exclusive alternatives, followed by the ranking of independent projects. State-of-the-art decision support software is indispensable for implementing this framework. / Transport Economics / D. Com. (Transport Economics)

Ce modèle permet de sélectionner pour chaque équipement, la stratégie de maintenance, internaliser ou externaliser la maintenance et le type du contrat tout en considérant le budget disponible et la charge/capacité du service maintenance / The hospital is a world that is both sensitive and complex, sensitive because the human life is involved and complex because medical facilities are growing in number and in technical complexity. Then, the problem of the medical equipment maintenance in order to keep them in safe, reliable and with high level of availability has become a major preoccupation of the hospital. The objective of this thesis is to provide tools to help the biomedical maintenance service of the hospital to make decisions that allow a better control of costs, while ensuring patient and user safety and maintaining optimal performance of medical equipment. First, a heuristic has been proposed for the choice of internalization or outsourcing maintenance and for the selection of the appropriate contract. The selection of the contract is based on a set of criteria while considering the available budget constraint. Then, to improve the proposed procedure, we proposed multi-criteria decision-making tools to select the appropriate maintenance strategies. Seven criteria have been designed to study the criticality of medical equipment and the choice of maintenance by providing a coupling of the AHP approach "Analytical Hierarchy Process" with TOPSIS technique "Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution." As the expert judgments of the maintenance department presented some uncertainty, we integrated the fuzzy language assessment of the criticality of the equipment and the selection of the maintenance strategy (Fuzzy AHP coupled with Fuzzy TOPSIS). A mixed integer linear programming model (MILP) was developed to define thresholds of criticality to characterize the three maintenance strategies. According to these thresholds, maintenance cost can be optimized within the available budget. Finally, a second mixed integer linear programming model (MILP) was developed based on the proposed heuristic. This model allows selecting for each equipment, the maintenance strategy, the internalization or the outsourcing of the maintenance and the type of contract while considering the available budget and the workload / capacity of the maintenance department

level to identify the projects to be executed with better success, aiming to maximize revenue.
The model was tested in a electromechanical industry located in northwest of Rio Grande do
Sul, where it was randomly selected six projects with engineering and custom
manufacturing(ETO and MTO) among twenty projects that are executed in average per
month. As a result, it was obtained the projects analyzed according to criteria adopted, which
should be prioritized in production without compromising delivery time to the customer and
the earnings of the company. Therefore, one can conclude that the tool can assist in
prioritization of project execution type (ETO and MTO).

Modelo de apoio à decisão multicritério para priorização de projetos em saneamento / Multicriteria decision aid model for the prioritization of water supply and sewage projectsVanessa Ribeiro Campos 25 November 2011 (has links)
The need of investment in water supply and sewage projects in Brazil is substantial to improve the quality of life. Previous issue date: 2014-03-18 / Global processes such as: habitat loss, overexploitation, invasive species and
climate change are driving many species to extinction. In the face of these threats,
the development of systematic planning which indicates the most important
biodiversity conservation areas has become widely accepted. The establishment
of protected areas is the main strategy for the protection of biodiversity and
maintenance of ecosystem processes due to its feasibility and economic cost.
However, species distribution can be altered by global climate change and,
possibly, the current network of protected areas may not be sufficient for species
representation in future scenarios. The impact of climate change on biodiversity
can be anticipated by spatial prioritization for conservation through the
development of dynamic conservation plans. However, it is clear that some
species have a more important ecological role than others (due to their biological
and life history characteristics) which includes the unique challenge of taking an
integrated view of biodiversity in conservation planning into account. The
Atlantic Forest is a lush biome which holds 7.7% of the world's known species of
amphibians and high concentration of endemic species. However, the Atlantic
Forest is also one of the most threatened tropical biomes of the world, mainly due
to the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats. This thesis provides proposals
for conservation efforts, considering the possible effects of climate change and
also the wider aspects of biodiversity. For this, I used the available amphibian
data from the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for
Conservation of Nature, available climate models, information on protected areas
by the World Database on Protected Areas, and attributes of species and the
phylogenetic tree consistent with specific literature. Chapter 1 highlights a discussion on the impact of climate change and priorities for biodiversity
conservation and the importance of including the functional and phylogenetic
diversity in conservation efforts. Chapter 2 brings a discussion about available
data for conservation studies, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of
using maps of extent of occurrence in systematic planning for conservation.
Chapter 3 shows the effectiveness of protected areas in maintaining species
richness under climate change from consensual projections of species
distribution models for amphibians inhabiting of the Atlantic Forest. In this
chapter, we identified that protected areas may gain or lose species due to climate
change according to the location of the current network of protected areas.
Chapter 4 presents an alternative approach to complement the existence of
protected areas and incorporates possible changes in species distribution. The
prioritization is based mainly on the distribution of species in both present and
future scenarios. This chapter outlines a conservation plan that minimizes the
effects of climate change on species dispersion. Besides these effects on species
dispersion, this solution also minimizes the uncertainty associated with
distribution models and prioritizing areas of low uncertainty. Chapter 5 explains
the spatial prioritization of conservation, including different aspects of
biodiversity, such as: phylogenetic & functional diversity measures and their
influence on evolutionary history and underlying ecological processes. The main
objective is to identify and compare the places that contain the most information
on the taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity, while also indicating the
conservation priorities for each biogeographical region of the Atlantic Forest. In
conclusion, we present our new and original ideas for conservation and discuss
the future prospects and predictions in this area.
Todavia, a distribuição
espécies no futuro.
No
pelo World Database on Protected Areas.
O capítulo 3 apresenta a avaliação
protegidas.
O capítulo 5 apresenta a priorização
a diversidade filogenética e funcional cujas medidas inferem tanto a história

Applications aux échelles de la France et du Pas-de-Calais / Identification of priority areas for the conservation and restoration of stream fish assemblages. Application at the scale of France and Pas-de-CalaisMaire, Anthony 20 November 2014 (has links)
The global loss of biodiversity affects freshwater ecosystems, making it crucial to identify the priority management actions in order to protect freshwater biodiversity in an effective and sustainable way. Based on an innovative multi-faceted framework of diversity, the spatial priorities for the conservation of stream fish assemblages have been identified at the scale of France. Their robustness to several drivers of global changes has then been assessed to identify the areas that are likely to efficiently protect the present-day biodiversity in the future. The methodological framework proposed herein has finally been applied to the river network of the Pas-de-Calais department located in northern France to accurately identify the local conservation and restoration priorities. These management tools can be used to support the establishment of management actions in accordance with the needs of the local environmental decision-makers.
