Discourses of motherhood and stigma production: FASD public awareness-raising in British Columbia, 1979–2015

Norton, Alexa 01 May 2018 (has links)
This study traces the evolution of motherhood discourses in 41 fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) public awareness documents produced in British Columbia from 1979–2015. These documents offer a window for understanding how dominant cultural values and motherhood norms are upheld and promoted via FASD prevention, with special implications for women marginalized by race, culture, and socioeconomic status. In order to deconstruct dominant discourses, this project is rooted in feminist post-structuralism and uses a Foucauldian-inspired discourse analysis as its method. Drawing on Carol Bacchi’s (2009) problematization framework, I analyzed the documents using two questions: 1) What is ‘the problem’ represented to be? and 2) What presuppositions or assumptions underlie this representation of ‘the problem’? Findings indicate that FASD public awareness-raising overwhelmingly positions maternal substance use as a woman’s individual choice. Alcohol abstention is framed as a duty to the fetus, although it is framed differently depending on the targeted audience. Findings show that documents present maternal substance use as a gauge of fitness for motherhood and unfairly focus on women who are racialized, low-income, and young. Uniquely, documents produced by and for Indigenous populations differed thematically than for the general population. In conclusion, this study highlights how FASD public awareness-raising promotes dominant cultural values and adheres to a neoliberal health promotion tradition. / Graduate

This Critical-Reflective Report is the result of the research that had as objective to problematize the gender relations from the speeches of the students and students, with a view to understanding what they say / think about the subject. This objective was built from the speech of the students and students of the fourth year of elementary school at the Carlos Peixoto Primo school in the city of Rio Grande, who presented situations through speech that needed to be problematized. Initially, the "Research Trajectory" is presented, after the revision chapters: "The constitution of the concept of gender", which allows a panorama of some actions that builds the concept of gender; "Gender and Education" that addresses the intertwining existing in these issues; Subsequently, the "Methodological Procedure", which took into account the approach of interventionist research of the pedagogical type, describing the intervention from different activities, explaining its theoretical basis and presenting the instruments of data collection, which were observation and documentary analysis . The subjects of this intervention were the pupils who attended the fourth year of elementary school in the year 2017 at the municipal school Pedro Carlos Peixoto Primo. The procedure of discursive textual analysis used for data analysis of this research resulted in the following categories: "Gender binarisms and their repercussions for education that deals mainly with the way of being a boy and a girl; "Is it possible to discuss gender in the classroom? Weaving some possibilities in pedagogical practice "that contemplates the different activities that were developed allowing the approach of the theme. The results showed that with the intervention, children began to question gender issues in their own speeches as well as those of other children, but it is still seen that many patterns that are imposed by society are present in the speeches and their behaviors.

Interdisciplinaridade, problematização e contextualização: a perspectiva de um grupo de professores em um curso de formação / Interdisciplinarity, problematization and contextualization: the perspective of a group of teachers in a training course

Ruas, Paloma Alinne Alves Rodrigues 13 March 2017 (has links)
The educational research has presented the contributions of the Scientific and Technological Literacy (STL) to students formation. However, there is a gap in teaching strategies that has not allowed the teacher to work with STL in the classroom. In this work, we present a methodological proposal that enables us to study STL objectives, and break with practices that value only information transference as well. This proposal is called Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality (IIR) where given a situation the student will use knowledge built in different disciplines to solve a problem. This design approach also allows Interdisciplinarity. In this perspective, Interdisciplinarity is not only seen as the integration of disciplines, but in a broad sense, as the mobilization of knowledge from the school curriculum, as well as from everyday life. Yet, literature has revealed the existence of conceptual and even methodological conflicts linked to the understanding of this term. For that reason, in adopting this perspective it becomes imperative to understand the concept of Interdisciplinarity at the heart of IIR. The development of IIR still makes it possible to approach curricular contents in a problematized and contextualizing way. In the same way, it is essential to understand the concepts of Problematization and Contextualization, because in the school environment it is possible to find misinterpretations about these terms. In relation to Problematization there are those who reduce it to a list of exercises; Contextualization is, in some cases, seen as the exemplification of everyday facts. This type of understanding becomes a significant obstacle when it is intended to work with IIR in the educational context. In this thesis, we discuss each of these terms in an epistemological perspective. In addition, we have carried out a continuing education action called Working with projects in the classroom: building an Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality to investigate the perception of a group of teachers regarding Interdisciplinarity, Problematization and Contextualization. At first, the analysis of two discussion forums: the first one dealing with Problematization and Contextualization, and the second with The concept of Interdisciplinarity. Subsequently, eight months after the end of the first course edition, a semistructured interview was conducted with four teachers, and with two teachers seven months after the conclusion of the second course edition. To verify the relationship between the discourse and the pedagogical teachers practice, in what concerns the concepts of Problem, Problematization, Contextualization, and Interdisciplinarity, the analysis of two activities was carried out, being the discussion forums: Sharing the results of the application of the IIR in the school, and The application of the IIR in the school context. The results show the difficulty of the teachers to work in a problematized, contextualized and interdisciplinary way in the classroom. On the other hand, it was verified that the course Working with projects in the classroom: building an Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality provided the participating teachers with a new pedagogical work, as well as with the construction of new knowledge, since the actions adopted by them to implement the IIR in the school context, approached the theoretical discussion addressed in the course.

Establishing a hybrid-methodology model for co-designing behaviour change : within the context of adventure sport participation in Scotland

Morton, Sarah January 2016 (has links)
Adventure sport participation numbers have significantly increased over the period of the past ten years; it has been suggested that the emergence of an experience economy, where experiences have more value than possessions, could be a key factor for this increase. Motivations for taking part in an adventure sport activity varies between participants, and perhaps even more so than those motivations that were expressed by participants’ pre-experience economy. There are a number of theories about increased participant numbers; for example, the type of demographic, how they approach participation, and approximate suggestions of how the trend for experiences rather than possessions will evolve in the future. However, there is little that explores the experiences of these newer participants, how they behave, and how they are being received by the adventure sport industry. Additionally, there is no evidence to suggest a definite understanding of the needs and requirements of these participants, nor has an investigation been conducted to measure how well the industry is meeting these. Likewise, the potential to adapt existing provision, to expose untapped opportunities, appears unconsidered, and therefore may have benefit for both providers and participants. This study took its lead from using a process of problematization, whereby the problem is explored, identified and defined by the designer(s), rather than presented to them to solve. Using this approach, a hybrid methodologies model was designed and tested to explore the perceptions and experiences of adventure sport participants, to identify any changes that may be occurring as a result of the experience economy and increased numbers of participants taking up an adventure sport activity. Immersive ethnographic and qualitative methods were implemented to better understand identified changes and issues, and quantitative methods were used to elaborate on, confirm and validate the findings. By doing this it was also possible to establish the efficacy of taking a lived experience approach to identifying and exploring emergent and currently unaddressed issues. The study identified three key themes of interest to adventure sport participants: provision of information, ability to accurately assess skill level and participate safely, and being a part of the adventure sport community. These emerging themes were problematizated, validated, and a process of co-design and ideation was used to establish and suggest a solution that could be implemented by the industry to solve the identified issues. This study highlights the potential of using lived experiences to identify a problem, and employs new mixed methodologies to develop a better understanding of critical factors occurring within a specific industry and its associated communities. The study uses this knowledge to generate a designed solution. The theories and methods discussed by the study have transferable values, and could be used within a wide range of other subject areas, being especially useful when a hypothesis proves difficult to identify and define at the outset of a study.

January 2008 (has links)
It is a common practi ce among researches the need of entering into History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science in science teaching, and this integration is repeatedly cited as a solution to the supposed crisis that broke into the school championship. Unhappy with the way these survey are taking, we delicated our research problem. We explicited our conception of education based mainly on the work of eductor Paulo Freire, that is, we present our vision of dialogic-problematizing education in the shed for liberation. We make a connection between the desing Freirien education and science education in order to establish a conception of science teaching and the teaching of physics which we share. In this conception of science education we present the purpose we intend redeem the History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science, HFSC, arguing for the inseparability of Science in science education. We present the experience of Newton's bucket and the the purpose that it would have this view. We conclude that the construction of statements about the experience of Newton's bucket through this consequent pronouncements and his return problematized to the subject gave the pupils a changing reality / Mestre

Flores, Eliane Maria Teixeira Leite January 2013 (has links)
The public policy dimension adopted by health education redirects the knowledge construction based in the teacher and student participation to a deeper involvement between dentistry and society. It is urgent to experiment other ways of university teaching and research using cognitive/pedagogical resources, taking into consideration the specificities of each reality and institution. The educational intervention is based on the principle that researching is inseparable from the change processes due to the connection between collective health and the subjective and cognition processes. In order to prepare the students to the health field changes it is fundamental to practice listening, speech, writing and teamwork in the teaching/learning process. The work was carried out in the Health and Society course and in seminars involving different courses by the lecturer/doctorate student with 44 School of Dentistry (UFRGS) freshmen during a semester. The different tools used – biographies/biographemes, diaries, talks after group projects, distance learning virtual forums and semi-open questionnaires – were introduced as seemed appropriate by the own learning problematization to increase transversallity between courses and the coefficient of communication. Cartographic analysis aims at describing and creating subjective effects in the narratives through writing, observation, and dialog and with the interference of epidemiologic studies actors on mouth health iniquities, social work, group work and self-care from human and social sciences thinkers. Current microcases and microfights excitement were extracted from such cartographic analysis, enunciating and rendering visible the experiences these students have had in existential territories in the academic school and basic health and city centers environments. Problematizing the encounters lived in such different spaces constitutes a cognitive device which opens up intelligence as it welcomes intuition. Cartography, as an action and enunciation political task, favors practical processes in dentistry in order to produce differences in the dentist surgeon identity, the construction of a contemporary singular health guardian and to democratize these groups. Cartography favors a deeper involvement between the post-graduation and the undergraduation students through knowledge production and circulation and active and non-reactive participation to changes. The university teaching has the obligation of reinventing learning modes, even though they might be minor alterations in today's/real/virtual practices; of intensifying collective assemblages we wish to enforce in public health as a common welfare; put in practice university syllabus reformation and public health teaching policies in everyday life and promote them among teachers, students, health system users and professionals within current social transformations.

This investigation focuses on the comprehension of theories, and on the presentation and re-signification of classes. The research was carried out through the narrative of construction, development, application and reflection on a Learning Unit (LU) regarding Science, Technology, and Society (STS). This LU was developed in two groups of eighth graders at Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental (EMEF), in Rio Grande, RS - CAIC-FURG. The LU entitled ―What is everything made of?‖, whose theme was ―Mobile Phone‖, analyzed historical, scientific and consumerist relations. The comments, collected from a blog which registered the activities and the overall development of the LU under class, were analyzed in the light of Moraes and Galiazzi‘s textual discursive analysis (2007) to write this thesis. Emergent categories highlighted planning, problematization, and reflection, which have intertwined the Learning Unit and Popular Education. The results of the research emphasize the importance of inservice programs in which a teacher‘s practice can be narrated and problematized in order to enable reflection and theorization processes to happen, be it about the class which is interwoven or about the teacher who is interwoven in wheels of teacher‘s education. The focus on STS strengthens the comprehension of the need to transform the contemporary model of society. Therefore, it agrees with my bet on popular education.
