Socially Just Principals' Pursuit of Cultural Proficiency

Kelly, Elizabeth 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to explore how the personal and professional experiences of school leaders strengthened or hindered their ability to engage in social justice leadership to advance educational equity and encourage culturally proficient practices in their schools. I employed a descriptive multi-case study and the research was viewed through a conceptual framework that included social justice, equity, and the five elements of cultural proficiency. Five principals from three different school districts were selected as participants. They represented elementary, middle and high schools. Interviews consisted of semi-structured face to face interviews with each principal participant and one focus group interview with five participants. Each participant also provided a cultural autobiography. Findings revealed while principals may care deeply about providing equitable opportunities for students, the interest does not supplement knowledge, skills, experience, and support. The information gained from this study can inform the practice of school leaders, and the way in which districts and programs of educational leadership prepare school leaders to serve and address the needs of all students as public schools become more culturally diverse.

Three Essays on Health and Health Behaviours of Immigrants

Khanam, Farhana January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the comparison between immigrants and non-immigrants with respect to various health-related behaviours perspective/viewpoints. Specifically, this thesis comprises three essays. First, I investigate any differences in the factors for utilizing general practitioners (GP) and specialists (SP) between immigrants and non-immigrants in Canada. Second, I examine the causal effects of language proficiency on the health and health behaviours of immigrants to Canada. Finally, I investigate whether there are any differences in the claiming patterns of the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) and/or Medical Expense Supplement (MES) for immigrants compared to non-immigrants in Canada. Chapter 1 investigates any differences in healthcare utilization patterns between immigrants and non-immigrants. We implement a two-part model, where the first part applies logistic regressions to assess factors associated with visiting a physician, and the second applies zero-truncated negative binomial regression models to capture the frequency of using healthcare services, conditional on having at least one visit. Our results show that the patterns of healthcare utilization are different for immigrants compared to non-immigrants; differences are also observed by gender and age. More specifically, prescription drug insurance coverage and chronic conditions play opposing roles for male and female immigrants compared to their non-immigrants counterparts. Moreover, the number of years since migration is an important factor in increasing the probability of any general practitioner (GP) and specialist (SP) visit for all immigrants. Chapter 2 is to my knowledge, the first research on the causal effects of language proficiency on health outcomes and healthcare utilization of immigrants in Canada. My finding contradicts the idea that immigrants with poor language facilities are less likely to have a regular doctor. I find that good self-reported health is positively associated with language proficiency. However, I find no statistically significant causal effect of language proficiency on reporting ‘good mental health’. In addition, I find strong evidence that the utilization of hospital and mental health care services are positively associated with being English-language proficient even after controlling for many possible sets of factors. Chapter 3 contributes by supporting existing literature, but with a completely different dimension: the medical tax perspective. I am unaware of any previous research that directly compares the claim patterns of the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) and/or refundable Medical Expense Supplement (MES) for immigrants with those of non-immigrants in Canada. My results show that there are differences in the proportions of tax filers who claimed the METC and/or MES, and the amounts of a claim for the METC and/or MES for immigrants compared to non-immigrants; differences are also observed by age, years since migration (YSM), province and immigration categories. In both couples and single families, a lower proportion of immigrant tax filers claimed gross immediate family medical expenses (GME), potential METC claims, and METC refunds compared to non-immigrants. In the case of single families, a higher proportion of non-immigrant tax filers claimed MES compared to their immigrant counterparts. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis focuses on the comparison between immigrants and non-immigrants with respect to various health-related behaviours perspective/viewpoints. The Dominant Listening Strategy of Low-Proficiency Level Learners of Mandarin Chinese: Bottom-Up Processing or Top-Down Processing

Yang, Chao-Chi 17 March 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Listening comprehension has been the forgotten skill in second language acquisition. However, in recent years, more and more studies have focused on listening comprehension and now acknowledge its importance in language acquisition. Empirical studies have explored how listeners use the two main listening processes (top-down processing and bottom-up processing). In this study, 31 low-proficiency level Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learners from Brigham Young University took the Chinese Computer Adaptive Language Test (CCALT) and listened to four listening passages, measured by idea unit analysis and local and global question types. The data from these measurements suggest that low-proficiency level CFL participants in this study used both top-down and bottom-up processing while they listened to short listening passages. The results suggest listening comprehension at various proficiency levels needs to be studied further in Chinese and with different types of listening passages.

Student Perceptions of Strategies Used for Reading Hispanic Literature: A Case Study

Brazzale, Rebecca Leigh 09 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
This qualitative study investigated the experiences of students during their reading tasks for their university Spanish courses during the Fall 2013 semester at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The purpose of this research was to explore what types of reading strategies university Spanish students use during literary readings tasks and their perceptions of the reading strategies they use. This case study employed stimulated recall protocol interviews, student reading logs and student notes in texts. Interviews were conducted within 24 hours of the reading, while reading logs and notes were completed during the reading. The data collected were analyzed for recurring patterns. Results suggested that students employ a variety of reading strategies but are less aware of metacognitive and affective strategies. Furthermore, it was found that individual affective factors such as stress, fatigue, frustration, confidence level and motivation might have a greater impact on strategy use than proficiency in the second language. Assessment and time constraints were also found to affect strategy implementation suggesting a strong washback in the foreign language classroom. Finally, participant comments demonstrated that students perceive reading in the foreign language class to be a pragmatic stepping-stone towards individual learning goals that may differ from the learning outcomes of a literature course.

The impact of english first additional language on grade 10 learners' academic performance in Tiyelelani Secondary School

Mogano, Mpho Ulendah January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Language Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of English First Additional Language on learners‘ academic performance. Qualitative approach was used to elicit responses from a sample of 12 learners and 4 teachers. The participants were purposefully sampled from a secondary school in Soshanguve. The researcher collected data using semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Both selected teachers and learners were interviewed, and content subject lessons were observed. The data was analysed using inductive thematic data analysis method. The findings of the study indicated that different factors such as poor English Language proficiency, the use of mother tongue language in the classes, lack of parental involvement, and lack of tangible resources and instructional materials had a negative impact on learners‘ academic performance. The findings also showed that lack of exposure to English language among both teachers and learners is a critical factor that resulted in the poor academic performance of Grade 10 learners. The study recommends that all the recommendations made to all the stakeholders involved, such as the Department of Education, teachers, parents and learners, should be implemented in order to improve the academic performance of all learners in schools.

[en] PROPOSED NEW CRITERIA FOR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF CLINICAL LABORATORIES BY MEANS OF PROFICIENCY TESTS / [pt] PROPOSTA DE NOVOS CRITÉRIOS PARA AVALIAÇÃO DE DESEMPENHO DE LABORATÓRIOS CLÍNICOS POR MEIO DE ENSAIOS DE PROFICIÊNCIA

DIOGO JOSÉ DA SILVA JERÔNIMO 15 August 2017 (has links)
[en] The participation of clinical laboratories in proficiency testing programs is an important tool for quality management. Most evaluations of clinical laboratory performance by proficiency testing are carried out based on the Z-Score criterion; whose assigned value is the consensus of results obtained by the participants of the round, which is heavily dependent on the quality of analytical systems of participants. Using a database provided by a proficiency testing provider accredited by INMETRO, this paper compares the performance of criteria for the assessment of proficiency of clinical laboratories for measuring glucose. The analysis considered not only commonly used criteria, but also new proposed criteria that are independent of the consensus effect, based only on parameters associated with the assigned value defined by the reference material. The observed discrepancies in the performance rating of laboratories, according to the evaluation criteria employed, allowed the evidencing of inadequacies in the classifications based on criteria using parameters affected by the consensus among participants. The study also characterized the performance of analytical systems employed by the laboratories, evidencing a significant discrepancy between the results its. The present work allowed a better understanding of the impact of criteria applied in proficiency testing programs on the adequacy of evaluation of laboratories performance, thus contributing to ensuring the reliability of clinical diagnostics and therapeutical procedures.

Extramural English Activities in the Swedish ESL Classroom / Fritidsengelska  i engelska undervisningen

Aychan, Ibrahim January 2021 (has links)
This literature review explores the use of Extramural English in the classroom and its effects on students’ language acquisition. Through a systematic analysis of different studies on EE activities such as video games, the Internet, gaming, and other activities, this paper will investigate the possible positive or negative effects of EE activities on students’ performance. The results of this literature review show that students who are more exposed to EE activities have a better result with regard to the acquisition of English than their peers because the language of communication in Extramural activities is mainly English.  The results also show that by incorporating EE in the classroom, teachers will be able to define the student’s strengths and weaknesses through eliciting the learning evidence when learning English as a second language.
