The subject matter of this thesis is the presentation of a typology of rural imagery based on a thematic and interpretative analysis of Polish and Czech literary texts from the 1960s with respect to the ongoing changes made to the original romantic-realist concept of the rural novel. The analysis of specific literary works (Sekyra by Ludvík Vaculík, Smuteční slavnost by Eva Kantůrková, and Čas kopřiv by Josef Knap from Czech literature, and, from Polish literature, Opadaný sad by Wiesław Myśliwski, the novels Na slunci by Julian Kawalec and … až budeš králem, až budeš katem… by Tadeusz Nowak) permits us to create a basic register of elements of rural narrativity which, however, Czech and Polish literatures have different perspectives on. Through this dichotomy we present typical narratives contained in the Czech and Polish rural novel of the given period. The subsequent interpretative analysis of the texts takes inspiration from contemporary narratology with special attention to the narrator and time categories, and by extension to the interplay of these categories with individual themes, symbols and topoi.

En nous situant dans un horizon critique qui associe à la considération de la trajectoire socio-culturelle de tout auteur l’étude de ses prises de position artistiques et des propriétés distinctives de son oeuvre, nous proposons dans cette thèse une relecture de la production littéraire précoce de Cesare Pavese, relative aux années Trente. Le choix de cette production - Ciau Masino, Lavorare stanca et Il carcere - sûrement moins étudiée, à l’exception du livre de poésie, par rapport aux oeuvres postérieures, permet de déplacer l’intérêt critique du côté de la genèse stylistique pavésienne. Légitimé par son travail de traduction de la littérature anglo-américaine, Pavese présente déjà, à ce stade, une « vocation mélodique » (Mutterle) originaire et originale, caractérisée par l’interdépendance systématique entre poésie et prose.Cette recherche se pose comme objectif de montrer que l’oeuvre poétique pavésienne entretient des relations étroites d’interaction et de correspondance avec sa prose narrative, à travers la construction d’un possible invariant rythmique. Le dépassement de l’opposition stérile poésie/prose favorise l’établissement d’une entreprise littéraire qui, envisageant le rythme en tant qu’élément unificateur qui structure à la fois la mise en forme, son contenu et sa valeur éthique, serait pleinement du côté du sujet qui l’écrit et de l’auteur qui l’énonce. / In this thesis, we offer a reinterpretation of the early literary production of Cesare Pavese, in the 1930s. We do so by placing ourselves in a critical horizon that considers the socio-cultural trajectory of the author and by studying his artistic stances, as well as the distinctive qualities of his work.Our choice consists of three works - Ciau Masino, Lavorare stanca and Il carcere - which are among the less studied, excepted for the second one, of his writings (as opposed to his later works), and allows us to move the critical interest toward the genesis of the style of Pavese. Legitimized by his translations of Anglo-American literature, Pavese possesses already, at this stage, an original and pure «melodic vocation» (Mutterle), characterized by the systematic interdependence between poetry and prose.This research aims to show that the poetic work of Pavese is in a close relationship of interaction and correspondence with his narrative prose, through the construction of a possible rhythmic invariant. Reaching beyond the sterile opposition of poetry/prose goes in favour of establishing a piece of work that would stand fully by the side of the subject who writes and the author who expresses himself, by taking in consideration the rhythm as an unifying element, structuring at the same time the textual shaping, the contents and the ethical value of that work.

L’œuvre de Michel Butor se singularise par la traversée des genres dont elle dévoile les limites. Se référant à la classification générique héritée du XIXème siècle, la critique littéraire divise souvent cette œuvre en poèmes, romans et textes inclassables, tout en affirmant l’idée d’un abandon de la forme romanesque après 1960. Pourtant, c’est le choix de la forme englobante d’un texte hybride, qui va désormais déterminer le genre.La première partie de la thèse étudie la mutation des formes littéraires dans l’œuvre de Michel Butor. Il s’agit d’examiner la question du choix du genre romanesque par l’écrivain. L’hybridisation générique sera un mode d’expression artistique privilégié, dans la mesure où la recherche de nouveaux aspects de la poétique butorienne montre qu’elle est contaminée par la métaphore théâtrale. Nous verrons donc l’interaction entre roman et théâtre radiophonique à travers la lecture de Mobile. Étude pour une représentation des États-Unis, Réseau aérien. Referring to the generic classification inherited from the nineteenth century, literary criticism often divides the work in poems, novels, and unclassifiable texts, while maintaining the idea that he had neglected the novelistic form after 1960. Still, the choice of the work that includes several forms of a hybrid text will now determine the genre.The first part deals with the mutation of the literary forms in the work of Michel Butor. We will examine the question of the choice of novelistic form by the author. Generic hybridization will be Butor’s favorite means of artistic expression, because the search of new aspects of Butor’s poetics reveals that it is corrupted by dramatic metaphor. So, we will see the interaction between the novel and radio drama through the reading of Mobile: study for a representation of the United States, Airline Network and Niagara.The second part is about the drama and shows radiophonic aspects of the postnovelistic work through different levels of reading set up by Patrice Pavis (Discursive, Narrative, Actantial, Ideological and Unconscious), and the production system in relation with the recording studio. The notion of “novelistic effect” will therefore be the result of an obsession of novelistic form produced by reading.The third part analyses poetic prose of radio drama and the unconscious and ideological structures of the work, based on the importance of oral discourse which reveals the ambiguity between the form (radio drama) and the individual attitude and the group, marked by the inability to pass on a coherent perception of the world because of their prejudices.

Cette thèse présente la première monographie française sur le grand écrivain russe et sibérien Victor Astafiev. Peu traduite en français, son œuvre importante (15 volumes) est généralement considérée par la critique comme s’inscrivant dans la veine de la prose rurale qui se développa en Russie à partir des années 70. Cependant, la biographie de l’écrivain et la multiplicité des thèmes qu’il aborde (société, guerre, musique, sons et nature) impose une remise en question de cette interprétation. L’auteur de la thèse s’attache à analyser finement les textes mis en contexte, à étudier l’évolution et la spécificité linguistique de leur écriture pour situer Astafiev dans la tradition de la grande littérature russe et faire apparaitre la profondeur et l’actualité de ses écrits. Le volume II livre une série de traductions inédites, annotées et commentées, ainsi que les versions reconstituées de chansons dont les textes révèlent un trésor de la culture populaire de l’époque. / This thesis presents the first French monograph on the great Russian and Siberian writer, Viktor Petrovich Astafiev. His important work (15 volumes), little-translated into French, is generally praised by critics as taking place within the same framework of the Village Prose, which started growing in Russia from the seventies onwards. However, the biography of the writer and the multiple themes which he takes up (society, war, music, sounds and nature) call into question this interpretation. The thesis author attempts to carry out a shrewd analysis of the texts placed within their context and to study the linguistic development as well as the specificity of Astafiev writings in order to situate him in the tradition of the great Russian literature and to highlight the depth and the topicality of his work. The second volume delivers a whole series of unpublished translations, duly annotated and commented as well as restored versions of songs, the texts of which reveal a treasure of the popular culture in the context of that time.

I den här uppsatsen presenteras och diskuteras min översättning av den schweizisk-italienska författaren Fleur Jaeggys novell ”La vecchia vanesia” (”Den sista fåfängan”), den sista i hennes novellsamling La paura del cielo (Rädd för himlen) från 1994. Utöver översättningen ingår även en analys av källtexten, mitt översättningsteoretiska ramverk och översättningsprincip samt kommentarer på tematiskt uppdelade översättningsproblem som jag har stött på under arbetsprocessen. Frågor som tas upp i arbetet innefattar hur språket och stilen i novellen kan återges i måltexten med Eugene Nidas dynamiska ekvivalens som översättningsprincip. Det har framgått att det är viktigt att anpassa grammatiska och lexikala aspekter för att målspråket ska flyta på naturligt. Även stilistiska drag utgör viktiga delar av den emotionella tonen i källtexten och återges i måltexten i syfte att uppnå dynamisk ekvivalens. / In this essay, my translation of the Swiss-Italian author Fleur Jaeggy’s short story “La vecchia vanesia” (“Last vanities”) from the collection of short stories La paura del cielo (Last vanities) from 1994, is presented and discussed. A stylistic analysis of the source text, my theoretical framework and translation principle as well as comments on thematically categorized translation problems are also included in the work. Questions raised in the essay include how form as well as content can be rendered in the Swedish target text with the dynamic equivalence by Eugene Nida as a translation principle. The work has shown that to achieve a natural result, it’s crucial to adapt grammatical and lexical aspects to norms in the target language. Stylistic aspects constitute important parts of the emotional tone in the source text and are reproduced in the target text to achieve dynamic equivalence.

Early American writer Hugh Henry Brackenridge conceived and developed a code of modern chivalry in his writings that culminated in the long prose satire Modern Chivalry. He first introduced his code in the poem "The Modern Chevalier," in which a modern knight is shown traveling about the country in an attempt to understand and correct the political absurdities of the people. In Modern Chivalry, this code is developed in the three major themes of rationalism, morality, and moderation and the related concern that man recognize his proper place in society. Satire is Brackenridge's weapon as well as the primary aesthetic virtue of his novel. The metaphor of modern chivalry serves to tie the various elements of the rambling book into a unified whole.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49) lived at the perfect time to write about several of the most dramatic technological developments ever recorded in history. Up until the nineteenth century, professional scientists were almost the exclusive agents for writing about science. However, during this period, non-professional writers also emerged as important conveyors of popular science news to the public. Though Poe was a lay writer, his popular writing conveyed several of the most important new discoveries of the Industrial Age. He also projected his views about how nineteenth-century technologies might impact civilizations of the future. Poe’s writing offers a key example of a widespread movement of thinkers who attempted to mediate the tensions and debates that were taking place in his lifetime between those who perceived and described the world from either the “Mechanical” or the “Romantic” approach.
This study explores the ways that Poe wrote about science in poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. I argue that a review of his earlier science writing helps to unlock several of the enigmatic writings of his culminationg work, Eureka:A Prose Poem. The final chapter of this thesis concludes with an in-depth discussion of Eureka. In Eureka, Poe proposes that man’s literary works are imperfect. However, he contends that the Creator has written and executed a perfect “Plot of the Universe.” Poe attempts to unravel several of its deepest mysteries in a multi-genre work of poetry, history, science, and metaphysics. I argue that modern scholars of literature and science history can gain a clearer view of the ways that the nineteenth-century public received and understood information about science by exploring Poe’s science writing than has been provided in previous historical or literary scholarship.

Image media in the Czech prose between 1989 and 2009 aims to describe methods of recording media in artistic literature. The aim of our study is to analyze different points of view while viewing the media. Thesis is directly linked to the knowledge of the subjects Media and Culture. The theoretical part deals with the literature development and media in the time identified by us. We are aslo noticing the journalist role in our society and their self-appraisal. In the analytical part we divide individual books into chapters. Our criteria for their creation is the role which the media have, and discribed methods - for example satire. Within detailed analyzing of the books, we came out from literary theory, especially we use knowledge of narratology. We also lean on information from the media development scene and research focusing on journalists and their position in society. Our thesis is the first work on this topic. We therefore give a basic overview of the captured media. As a second dominant theme during the work, we chose a subject of reporters description. Our work brings the knowledge of the evaluation of their work and their self-esteem, most authors in our text are journalists. Velmi utěšená a kratochvílná historie o krásné panně Mageloně, dceři krále z Neapolis, a o jednom rytíři jménem Petrovi, znamenitého hraběte z Provincí synu (The Delightful and Entertaining Story of the Beautiful Young Maiden Maguelone, Daughter of the King of Naples, and of a certain Knight called Peter, the Son of the Distinguished Count of Provence) printed anonymously in Olomouc in 1780, is one of those works into which literary science has hitherto scarcely ever inquired. It is nevertheless a text with a very long and complex genesis. We can follow its development from a medieval French tale of love, via a German adaptation to an early modern Czech popular prose romance. In the story of Maguelone, close attention is paid, as the very title suggests, to the main heroine, which is also a theme which in research into older Czech literature has been hitherto rather neglected. In the present thesis, we focus therefore on the analysis of this character. In particular, we try to show how the way she is portrayed is significantly influenced by the medieval conception of courtly literature, despite the fact that courtly epic literature is not otherwise particularly well documented in literature written in Czech and left no particularly rich tradition behind it. This diploma thesis deals with life and work of a pre-White Mountain period poet, prosaist and dramatist Šimon Lomnický of Budeč, taking the period criticism into account. The thesis focuses on his ethical series, especially the work Kupidova střela, whose central motive is the relationship between a man and a woman. With regard to Lomnický's frequent use of exempla, this term is defined, along with the brief historical development of exemplum. Next the thesis deals with the exemplum in the context of the given ethical series. The key chapter called The Approach to Relationships between Man and Woman depicts Lomnický's conception of marriage, incest, sodomic sin and a revenge as well. Within this chapter the typology of men's and women's characters is given, those who appear in Kupidova střela.
