The Lifelong Consequences of Protesting : A Longitudinal Analysis of the Gendered and Intergenerational Effects of Protest Participation on Individuals’ Life-Course Patterns

Gisgård, Hannah January 2020 (has links)
Protesting is a common tactic used by social movements and the outcomes are widely researched in social movement studies. This thesis examines the biographical consequences of protest participation on individuals’ life-course patterns from a gendered and intergenerational perspective. The study employs regression analysis and a longitudinal dataset collected from the Swedish Level of Living Survey, which includes six panel waves in total stretching from 1968 to 2010. It consists of a nationally representative sample of the Swedish population between the ages of 15–75, in which the last two panel waves include the respondents’ children in the ages of 10–18. The results show that protest participants are likely to become more educated than non- participants and that they continue to remain active in political and union activities. Further, there is evidence of gender-based differences between protesters as women do not continue to uphold the same level of involvement in political organisations in comparison to men. No support is given to the expectation that protesting will have intergenerational effects. The results show that participating in protests may have long-lasting consequences for individuals and that there seems to be gender-based differences between protesters, which might have implications for individuals’ further involvement in political activities.

This dissertation is a sociological study about young girls stricken with nervous anorexia attending a medical service that specializes in the treatment of alimentary disorders. Based on cases related by three youths, this work aims at presenting conflicting aspects that those patients had to go through during their medical treatment. It is investigated how anorexic subjects display a body that is considered healthy by medical science. To this end it was engaged as main support the work of Michel Foucault. Based on his concept of resistance, it is sought to unveil how anorexic patients produce their subjectivities in dealing with medical knowledge and information obtained from the media about health, well being and beauty. In the same fashion, this works is interested in discovering how production of genre identity appears in the process of renouncing a prepubescent body in order to adopt a sexually mature body. Based on a qualitative approach, especially from data obtained from field research, it was possible to observe that the anorexic experience is essentially a paradoxical feature. The production of an anorexic body into a healthy body requires rearrangements going from the will of keeping an excessively slender figure and the desire of obtaining cure. Based on statements from anorexic subjects it is possible to assert that the disorder is both a manisfestation of disagreement presented by these girls in their attempt at building a feeling of autonomy by reining their feeding drives and the plentiful offer of discourses about health, beauty and diets in order to elect just one of these discourses as their guidance to a way of life

January 2010 (has links)
In 19th century, after attempts' frustrations of Frenchmen, in Bahia of Guanabara, and Dutchman in the North-eastern, the Protestantism gradually initiates a process of insertion in Monarchical Brazil, in a nation, which by law called the padroado, didn't differentiates religion and State. This insertion happened of lot ways, by immigration, missionaries enterprise, by establishment of schools and also by individual initiatives. One of these initiatives was the work of the couple Robert and Sarah Kalley. Robert Kalley, doctor and voluntary missionary, financed by personal richness, after its expulsion of Wood Island and passage by the United States of America, come for Brazil to live in Petrópolis. In the Rio de Janeiro city establishes the first Brazilian Gospel Church - The Fluminense Evangelic Church. Sarah Kalley, missionary and educator, following her husband, develops a religious and secular educational work in Rio de Janeiro, at a historical moment when the Monarchic State did not value the education. In their writings we found marks of the rational and modern ideology, revealed in a monarchical nation which allowed slave. In this thesis, these writings are analyzed starting from the concept ideology like vision of world worked out by Gramsci. These analyses make us to think that, like organic intellectuals, the Kalley couple judges conveyors a mission, which, the trailer of the diffusion of the Protestantism, transmit also a vision of world regulated in rationality and a modernity / Doutor

Révolution P.Q. : figures révolutionnaires québécoises

Lorange, Louis-Philippe 03 1900 (has links)
My research-creation master`s thesis is divided in two sections. The first section is theoretical and is separated into three parts. In the Introduction, I describe the iconic image that "Che" Guevara’s represents. In the first part, I make the distinction between a revolution and a riot. Furthermore, I make a summary of several books on protest groups in Québec literature and how the authors write mostly on rebellion and identity rather that portray a revolutionary portrait of Québec. Meanwhile, I demonstrate how revolutionaries have been presented by Quebec cinematographers, either with irony and cynicism, or, as heroic protesters with a degree of humanity. In the second part, I explain the reason why I decided to make a documentary film about the figures of revolution in Quebec. I address my aesthetic choices, as well as the choice of speakers, the strength of voice in cinema, and the power of archives. My documentary film that lasts about fifty minutes specifically addresses the issue of protest figures and is complementary to my written thesis. The main purpose of my film is to demonstrate that there are Québec iconic protesting actors with revolutionary ideas that exist at the same level as the famous image and individual that was Ernesto “Che” Guevara. He has inspired generations of revolutionaries, including many in Quebec in the sixties and seventies. Can we identify some Quebecers as revolutionary icons?
