"I think it's more women on buses but I haven't thought about why" : A qualitative study of public transport and its relation to gender equality in Västerbotten County

Wigström, Josefine January 2017 (has links)
ABSTRACT   As the population across the world steadily increases, we become more globalized and travel more extensively. This burdens the environment and causes a decrease in safety, and increases congestion and pollution in both rural and urban areas. It is therefore vital to reduce these impacts and thus encourage more sustainable transport solutions. Studies show that men in general travel less sustainably than women, as they use cars for transportation more often. Women, however, use public transport to a greater extent. To be able to encourage a modal shift towards sustainable alternatives – thus creating an attractive public transport system for both women and men – it is essential to understand the underlying causes for these differences in attitudes and travel behaviour between men and women. The purpose of this thesis is to examine gender equality in relation to public transport. More specifically, the thesis will investigate how focusing on gender issues is significant in order to create and develop a sustainable public transport system. The method for this thesis is based on interviews, in which both frequent and less frequent bus travellers have shared their current notions and perceptions on public transport. Part of the aim has been to identify any differences between men and women’s answers and the way they discuss these issues. Furthermore, thematic coding analysis was used to analyse the results that led to five different themes being identified as most frequently mentioned during the interviews. The results were subsequently put into context with related academic research concerning gender equality, mobility, transportation and sustainability. Conclusively, the results show that there are tendencies for gender inequality within public transport in Västerbotten, which is expressed in several different ways by the respondents.

Optimalizace veřejné dopravy v centru Plzně v dlouhodobém horizontu / Optimalization of public transport in the centre of Pilsen in long term period

Kohout, Vojtěch January 2014 (has links)
This Diplomas thesis is focused on the area of public transport in the centre of Pilsen and its optimization in a long term. In the methodology part are defined basic terms of public transport and theoretical outcomes for urban and suburban public transport systems. Next there is a description of means of transport and methods of preference used in public transport. Shortly is introduced the legal framework of public transport in Czech Republic. The processes of transport management especially the process of planning are described in detail. The last subchapter of the methodology part describes integrated transport systems. The analytical part of the thesis begins with the description of the Pilsen as a regional centre and the analysis of its urban and suburban transport system. The deficits of the system are grouped into problem areas; for each problem area is suggested an optimization: the new bus terminal in Šumavská street near the Pilsen main train station, the interconnection of Borská street with the intersection Karlovarská/Lidická and usage of the north-west bypass by public transport.

Affective Forecasting: Predicting Future Satisfaction with Public Transport

Pedersen, Tore January 2009 (has links)
Affective forecasting refers to the process of predicting future emotions in response to future events. The overall aim of the present thesis was to investigate, by applying the framework of Affective forecasting, how car users predict their satisfaction with public transport services. Study 1, Part 1 revealed a satisfaction gap between users and non-users of public transport, whereby non-users reported lower satisfaction than users, in overall satisfaction as well as in two quality factors resulting from a factor analysis of a major survey on satisfaction with public transport. It was hypothesized that non-users were biased in their satisfaction reports, something which was subsequently investigated in Study 1, Part 2, where a field experiment revealed that car users suffer from an impact bias in their predictions about future satisfaction with public transport due to being more satisfied with the services after a trial period than they initially predicted they would. Addressing the question of whether or not a focusing illusion is the psychological mechanism responsible for the impact bias, two experiments containing critical incidents were conducted during Study 2, in order to investigate whether or not car users exaggerate the impact of specific incidents upon their future satisfaction with public transport. For car users with a stated intention to change their current travel mode, in Study 2, Part 1, as well as for car users with no stated intention to change their travel mode, in Study 2, Part 2, the negative critical incident generated lower predicted satisfaction with public transport, in support of the hypothesis that the impact bias in car users’ predictions about future satisfaction with public transport is caused by a focusing illusion.

[pt] ESTRATÉGIAS E TÁTICAS NOS TRENS DA SUPERVIA / [en] STRATEGIES AND TATICS AT SUPERVIA S RAIL

05 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The following work discuss about the use of the train commuters in Rio de Janeiro, and by ethnografy resources focuses some phenomenons wich caracterise the relationship of the users to this transport. As every public space, it has oficial and unoficial rules wich permeal the relationship with the users. From Michel Foucaut and Michel de Certeau theories, are discussed the stratch between the disciplinary rules of Supervia Company (concessionary of that service) and the tactics used by the users to go aganist it.

Förändrade Rörelsemönster I Kollektivtrafiken Under Covid-19 : En studie om rörelsemönster i Karlstads kommuns kollektivtrafik innan och under Covid-19 / Changed movement patterns in public transport during Covid-19 : A study about movement patterns in Karlstads public transport before and during Covid-19

Edblad, Amanda, Julia, Henricson Wåhlin January 2021 (has links)
During the past year, our everyday lives have changed. From one day to the next we stopped going to work and school to instead work and study from home. In the past, many have used public transport to facilitate their everyday life and move around in society. Today, however, we have clear recommendations from the Swedish Public HealthAgency/Folkhälsomyndigheten (2021) to avoid travelling by public transport as much as possible to reduce the spread of infection. This has led to an increase in use of the car as the main means of transport, which creates thoughts about what consequences changed movement patterns in public transport can have for the city and its inhabitants. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to investigate how movement patterns in public transport in Karlstad municipality have looked like before and during the ongoing pandemic, Covid-19. The thesis is based on previous research, reports from organizations and authorities, as well as a survey. With the help of these, sufficient material was provided to be able to discuss, analyze and answer the questions about changed movement patterns in Karlstad municipality's public transport before and during Covid-19. The results showed, among other things, that more people than we anticipated only traveled 0–2 times a week by public transport in Karlstad municipality before Covid-19, but that this figure also became higher during Covid-19. However, there is a difference between the sexes, where men travel more often by car than women, and a difference depending on employment where students (high school and university level) travel by public transport more regularly and to a greater extent.
