Modely začlenění odborné přípravy do výuky anglického jazyka / Language and content integration models in ELT

Synková, Blanka January 2014 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the topic of language and content integration in ELT in a broad sense, i.e. it discusses not only CLIL but also other models of content-based teaching, viz. ESP (English for Specific Purposes), EAP (English for Academic Purposes), and EMI (English-medium Instruction). In the theoretical part of the thesis, these models are described as regards their history, typical features, teachers, learners, as well as benefits and negatives. The empirical part of the thesis explores the current practice of language and content integration at Czech general secondary schools ("grammar schools"). The research is based on case studies of five teachers who teach various courses belonging to this category. The preliminary research investigated what courses are currently being offered at grammar schools in Prague; they are mostly elective courses. Our research findings suggest that language and content integration in the form of elective courses is a rather common practice, although often unconscious. Teachers tend to act on the basis of their intuition rather than their knowledge of theory and practice of language and content integration. Generally, it seems that more emphasis is put on content than language in these lessons. Content-based English lessons may be beneficial for learners for...

Discourse Itineraries in an EAP Classroom: A Collaborative Critical Literacy Praxis

Chun, Christian Wai 28 February 2011 (has links)
This classroom ethnography documents the developing critical literacy pedagogy of an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor over the course of several terms. My research, which involved extensive collaboration with the EAP instructor, explores how specific classroom practices and discourses are enacted and mediated through dialogic intertextualities, material objects, and social actions that frame representations about language, literacy, and what Lefebvre (1988) called “le quotidien” – the everyday, and how these affect the students’ meaning-making potential in specific ways. It also traces the contours (and detours) of the instructor’s classroom practices after the researcher’s mediation in the form of collaborative inquiries on functional grammar and critical literacy, and the effects of these classroom practices on making meaning in her EAP classes. I consider several issues from an integrated theory and practice perspective. Because of an urgent need to understand the students’ practices and epistemologies as they engage in ever newer forms of multimodal text productions, I contend that EAP classroom practices must be reshaped to facilitate more (inter)active engagements of the multimodal texts that saturate students’ lives, both inside the class and outside. Related to this, I highlight in my classroom data what actually counts as the ‘critical’ or the ‘uncritical’ in this EAP classroom and argue why these distinctions matter. Lastly, I suggest ways in which the role of a critical multiliteracies education in EAP can meet the pragmatic needs of both students and teachers. My research contributes to a much-needed dialogue between critically oriented researchers and practitioners in the field of TESOL/Applied Linguistics by bridging the gap between theory and practice. The lessons learned from this collaborative classroom praxis point to concrete ways to help EAP teachers and students utilize their meaning-making potential. This involves equipping them with an expanded social semiotic tool-kit that can enable them to not only meet their immediate academic needs, but also help create a more active and possibly transformative role in the social constructions of discourse, language, and society. This doctoral dissertation has implications for those who are involved in EAP teaching and research, curriculum planning, teacher training, and student needs assessment.

Target language captioned video for second language listening comprehension and vocabulary acquisition

Cano, Clarissa Ysel 17 February 2015 (has links)
This report surveys existing literature in order to determine how best to implement target language captioned video in a classroom of a particular context: a Korean church in the U.S. whose members desire to improve their English language ability for the purpose of sharing the gospel of resurrection in English. In order to gain insight into the benefits and limitations of target language captioned video on second language listening comprehension and vocabulary acquisition and thus how to use the learning tool optimally, literature is reviewed regarding word knowledge, processing strategies, and reported gains or effects of the use of captioned video. Then, incorporating the information gleaned from the literature, two sample lesson plans are presented utilizing the C-Channel English testimony videos as the primary tool for instruction. / text

Chen, Chia-Chi Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis aims to explore the current situation of an “English Lab Course for Occupational Purposes” in college and to provide suggestions for further improvement. This study focuses on two aspects:one is the motivations and needs analysis of the students who take this course; the other is the training and acquiring of listening strategies in this course. This course is based on the theory of “English for Specific Purposes” and is designed for Business majors. All the subjects of this research are sophomores and seniors of the College of Commerce at NCCU. The subjects’motivations and needs are investigated through a questionnaire survey at the beginning and the end of the semester. This research reveals the different motivations and needs for efficient and less-efficient learners. The results may provide some helpful perspectives to assist teachers in selecting effective teaching materials and designing appropriate courses. The other emphasis of this study is on the training and acquiring of listening strategies in this course. The definitions and categories of listening strategies are based on Oxford’s theory (1990). The author sits in on the classes for 28 hours to observe and record the actual teaching and learning situations. In addition, both questionnaires and tests (pre-test & post-test) are utilized to examine the actual strategies the subjects employ. With reference to the results of the observation, questionnaires and tests, the author presents the most effective listening strategies of this course. Based on the conclusions of this thesis, some possible applications are proposed for an “English Lab Course for Occupational Purposes”. The author hopes these suggestions can enhance the development of relevant courses in the future.

An analysis of urban transport demand in Windhoek : a case study of the Katatura and Khomsdal residential areas

Oherein, Daniel Lee Asikhia 11 1900 (has links)
Existing travel patterns in Windhoek are influenced by the past land use policy of restricted urban development in the former townships ofKatutura and Khomasdal. Thus residents in these townships are faced with longer distances to reach quality urban servtces. This thesis examined the impact on travel demand of changes in land use policies aimed at stimulating growth in the two areas using the HLFM computer model. The results showed that, policy induced land use changes may stimulate population and employment growth in the neglected areas, but with no effects on the present travel patterns. The model needs to be refined to fit the peculiarity of the study area. Nevertheless, information provided in the thesis could be used in assessing areas where development trends will go if any ofthe land use policy tested in the study is adopted. / Geography / M.A. (Geography)

Analiza potreba kao kljuĉni aspekt u procesu izrade kursa engleskog jezika za oblast tehnološke i inženjerske struke / Needs analysis as a key design factor fortechnology and engineering oriented ESLcourses

Jerković Jelena 07 September 2016 (has links)

Provera efikasnosti i svrsishodnosti
/
This dissertation deals with needs analysis as a
necessary, first step before EST course design. Since
ESP teaching development covers numerous factors
in needs analysis – target situation analysis, discourse
analysis, present situation analysis and teaching
context analysis, needs analysis in this dissertation is
viewed from all of the mentioned aspects while the
research is conducted in two phases.
In the first phase, present situation analysis is
performed regarding use and teaching process from
the point of view of technology students and English
teachers. In parallel, needs analysis concerning the
English language use is also performed from the
employed technology engineers. The results obtained
and processed by quantitative methods showed poor
frequency of English for specific purposes in the
teaching process from the aspect of students and
English language teachers. Concerning English
language use by the employed technology engineers,
the results showed frequent English language use for
professional purposes as well as the importance of
English language competence for better performance
at work, especially emphasizing reading,
communicative and writing skills.
By taking into account the obtained needs
analysis results, a new course is designed for
technology students’ purposes more adapted to the
needs of future technologists, which was
subsequently offered to experimental group of
students. The assessment of the efficiency and
purposefulness of a new course is performed in the
second phase of the research, first by the quantitative
method, comparing the achievement test results of
experimental and control group of students, and then
by qualitative method from student interviews.
The results of the achievement tests showed
significant success in cumulative points of students
in experimental group (total grade 8,8) in relation to
control group (6,77), which was also confirmed by
the comparison of individual criteria in which
statistical significant difference is obtained
(p<0,0001).
The results obtained by the qualitative method
confirmed the importance of English for specific
purposes in the teaching process at the faculty,
pointing out a motivation factor in direct relation to
frequency of English for specific purposes.
Regarding the efficacy of the new course, the
students emphasized the importance of teaching
material that should necessarily be focused on their
future profession, more frequent student achievement
tests as well as the importance of affective factors
(teacher, group work, class atmosphere). The
students also emphasized the teacher’s non-dominant
role as a facilitator; as well as group work that
provides them more freedom to express their opinion,
and the preferred class atmosphere relaxed yet also
hard-working.
The research results showed that the courses
based on performed needs analysis give better results
at the achievement test, better motivation and higher
language competences of students that confirm the
thesis of necessary needs analysis as a pre-course
procedure.

Gauthier, Marie-Pierre 08 1900 (has links)
The sexual exploitation for commercial purposes is making more and more victims in India. Considering the scale of the phenomenon and the gravity of its multiple consequences, our research aims at knowing better and at understanding the experience lived by women engaged in sexual activities against payment. More precisely, the objectives of our research are to describe the progress having driven these women to be engaged in such practices as well as their daily reality and how they perceive their situation, to be then capable to formulate propositions of preventive interventions or addressed to the women being already engaged in sexual activities for commercial purposes. We chose to interest ourselves in the women living and prostituting themselves at the train station of Varanasi. A qualitative method was privileged in the realisation of the research. Eight interviews were conducted with women and girls who prostitute themselves at the train station and three with social workers already involved on site. The observation in situ allowed to enrich the collected data. These prostitutes often come from a dysfunctional family circle. It is in situation of flight or family abandonment that they settle down at the train station. It is a place where the women are in situation of extreme vulnerability and where the living conditions are miserable. Exposed to the dangers of the life at the station and accessible to the pimps, prostitution becomes an option to survive. The needs of intervention with these women are multiple and answering to those needs is complex. A harm reduction policy and prevention appear to be avenues to be privileged.

A training engineering for French of tourism in the Moroccan context

Benmoussa, Saâdia 02 February 2017 (has links)
Back In the colonial era, French language was imposed for empire and influence purposes, yet nowadays, it stands as a language for professional purpose due to the impact of globalization. My research pays particular attention to the teaching of French for professional purpose in the field of tourism in Morocco. This research comes as an intersection between language didactics and initial vocational training, following the emergency programs recently decided by the Moroccan Ministry of tourism about upgrading French language level among students. Thus, the need to respond effectively has become particularly sensitive and is a strong motive for this research. This project is based on an appraisal of French teaching regarding tourism in Morocco altogether with reviewing used instruments for this purpose in one hand, and figuring out students and teachers current needs and even touristic institutions expectations in the other hand, in order to perceive didactical French appliances mainly intended to our present public. In fact, the intention is to pump some specific cultural and lingual proficiency whether it's written or oral, that meets the work market needs. For this purpose, training engineering is highly recommended.
