In this study, the theoretical principles of complexity (Morin, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010; Mariotti, 2002, 2007; Moraes, 2008,2010) are articulated with the theoretical bases provided by: English for Specific Purposes (Hutchinson & Waters,1987; Dudley-Evans & St John,1998); the design of specific courses (Graves, 2000); teacher education (Pineau, 1988; Pineau & Michéle, 1983; Freire, 2009); experiences and reflective thought (Dewey,193); and reflective practice (Schön, 1992). The hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (van Manen, 1990; Freire,1998, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, forthcoming) also establishes a steady dialogue with complexity, thus offering support to this research. The interpretation of the two courses investigated is made from the perspective of the researcher/teacher/course designer, considering the texts produced by all participants of this study. The articulation between my reflections and the participants texts make it possible for me to reflect upon and understand the phenomenon. The two lived experiences are described and interpreted separately to be articulated subsequently. Although the experiences are distinct, in both courses, the texts reveal three themes: necessity, difficulty and satisfaction, which are related to learning, change, balance, motivation, security, maintenance, interaction, overcoming, achievements and involvement ─ described in details in this study. The experiences lived in both courses have main points in common; nevertheless, each context has its own peculiarities which generate the gradual (trans)formation of my practice and promote my self-hetero-ecoformation (Freire, 2009) in a specific context / O objetivo desta dissertação é descrever e interpretar o fenômeno a prática docente de um professor de inglês/course designer em dois cursos para a área da hotelaria, buscando subsídios para melhor compreendê-la.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Stela Marques Ochiucci.pdf: 2984957 bytes, checksum: 19516f83fdd67a1a83eff8ec2d179a4b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-12-05 / Considering limited professional contexts for Teachers of French as a Foreign Language, which working scenes, generally, refer to specific purposes, this thesis defends Letters Undergraduations should provide a formation which develops such competences for future Teachers of French as a Foreign Language. Thus, this research discusses the needs of preservice Teachers of French as a Foreign Language of learning and practicing teaching French for Specific Purposes approach. It is supposed that such approach will develop future teachers’ autonomy and critical reflective consciousness, once there are restricted spaces in Brazilian context to offer the teaching of French as a Foreign Language in Regular Education. Inserted in Apllied Linguistics Studies, this research brings Hutchinson and Waters (1998) and Mangiante and Parpette (2004, 2011) to approach general aspects on Teaching Languages for Specific Purposes. It also shows Perrenoud (2001, 2002) and Schön (2008) to focus on reflective practices and Freire (2008, 2011) and Gallison and Puren (2001) as a foundation for a discussion on autonomy and political formation for teachers. Besides, Tomlinson (1998), Ramos (2009, 2010) and Celani (2005), have brought up reflections on teaching material for teaching French for Specific Purposes. The concept of local needs have taken as basis the notion of local knowledge by Canagarajah (2005) to justify the validity of Teaching French for Specific Purposes in a given region. Therefore, it is a qualitative research, taking as methodological support the modality of Case Study and Data Analysis Procedures based on the studies of Bardin (2011) in order to construct analysis criteria, also considering criteria defined by Ramos (2010) to analyse taching material. This research brings as contribution the thesis that the process of formation for Teachers of French as a Foreign Language brings about the development of three distinct types of knowledge: savoir, savoir-faire and savoir-être which are exposed by the stages of perception, reflection and action, recognized in the predisposition for Teaching Practice Stage, in the production of teaching material and in the pre-service Teachers’ classes. Our results reveal that the formation of Teachers of French as a Foreign Language in the approach of Teaching French for Specific Purposes develops needed competences for teachers’ actions, teaching in specific contexts and the development of the three knowledges decribed in this research are confirmed, especially by the stages of perception, reflection and action / Diante de um atual cenário profissional limitado para o professor de Língua Francesa, para quem o locus de trabalho contempla, na maioria das vezes, contextos específicos de ensino, esta tese defende que os cursos de graduação em Letras devem prover uma formação que desenvolva as competências desse professor, com foco na Abordagem de Ensino de Francês com Objetivo Específico.

Labella-Sánchez, Natalia January 2016 (has links)
This qualitative research focuses on the design and conceptualization of learning materials aimed at the teaching of Spanish for specific purposes based on genres for the subsequent modality course of a Federal Institute in the southern of Brazil: the course of Technician in Real Estate. Because vocational education courses aim to train and professionally qualify students, they provide the right context for the teaching of languages for specific purposes (LSP). For courses of LSP, it is essential to carry out a needs analysis that supports the design and conceptualization of learning materials aimed to meet the specific professional and academic needs of students (HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1996). Thus, with the intent to conceptualize a didactic proposal for the teaching of Spanish based on genres for vocational education courses, the concept of genres have been considered since the needs analysis stage in the research. The theoretical foundations used to support such an analysis come from the Rhetorical Genre Studies, specially, the theoretical and methodological proposal of the study of activity systems (BAZERMAN, 2005) to identify and comprehend the genres that circulate in a specific socio-communicative context. For the stage of analysis and didactization of the characteristics of the identified genres, the theoretical and methodological framework of the Sociodiscursive Interactionism (SDI) has been used, more specifically the proposal of didactization of language capacities needed for the production and/or consumption of genres, based on the production of didactic sequences (SCHNEUWLY, 1998; 2004; DOLZ; SCHNEUWLY, 1998; SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2004a, DOLZ; NOVERRAZ; SCHNEUWLY, 2004). The corpus was generated through surveys and semi-structured interviews, field notes and the gathering of exemplars of genres. Among the methodological procedures adopted to analyse the activity systems of the real estate agents, Bazerman’s methodological proposal (2005) and the techniques and procedures of grounded theory to code, categorize and relate pieces of information were used (STRAUSS; CORBIN, 2008; CHARMAZ, 2009). In relation to the analysis of the didactic characteristics of the genres identified, the methodological suggestions of the SDI framework were used (DOLZ; SCHNEUWLY, 1998; CRISTOVÃO et al., 2010; CRISTOVÃO; STUTZ, 2011). The findings indicate that the analysis of the activity systems of real estate agents of Porto Alegre and the identification of the genres in Spanish that can be used by such professionals, to engage with Hispanic-speaker clients, generated relevant informative subsidy to: (a) know the language capacities, especially those of the pre-textual level of analysis, that constitute the genres in Spanish; (b) guide the design of Spanish teaching material for real estate agents based on didactic sequences; (c) produce instructions and activities that explore the language capacities characteristic of genres based on the socio-communicative situations needed for their production and/or consumption. The study allowed the conclusion that the relation of intersection and complementarity between the study of activity systems (BAZERMAN, 2005) and the proposal of didactization of SDI have potential to subsidize the design of learning materials for the teaching of languages for specific purposes.

This research about language teaching for specific purposes aims at investigating the emic perspective of language learning through collaborative tasks in a blended learning (BL) context. To support this research we adopt a sociocultural perspective, and understand language learning as a result of mediation and social interaction among individuals, artifacts and language (VYGOTSKY, 1978,1986; JOHNSON 2009; LANTOLF, 2001). We adopted a methodology of action-research and had collaborative tasks as a starting point; we applied such tasks in order to propose alternatives to the teaching of languages for specific purposes and examine the students own perspectives about their learning process. In our theoretical perspective, we believe the learning opportunities in the classroom should consider both the cognitive and the affective dimensions (HALL, 2003) and that the understanding of emotions and beliefs involved in the learning process can bring about important contributions to its understanding. We undertook semi-structured interviews before and after the implementation of the collaborative tasks and the recording of the interactions of the students during the lessons. Our tasks also intended to use a BL perspective under the definition of Sharma (2010) that such approach is based on an ideal blend of traditional and virtual learning, that is, it is an attempt to promote a more efficient learning experience. It should be noted that, by tasks, we understand pedagogical activities that require the resolution of problems in a collaborative way (SWAIN e LAPKIN, 2001) and that present specific objectives (ELLIS, 2000; SWALES, 2000). Our results indicate that the tasks promoted collaboration among students and that could also be verified by the reinforcement of the students’ beliefs about the importance of interaction and of their classmates in their language learning process. Therefore, we perceived that the students’ and the teacher’s actions influenced upon students’ emotions and beliefs. We have also observed that the emerging emotions were diverse and we have also analyzed the role of these emotions in the students’ learning processes. This research brings a new perspective on how to examine emotions in the learning process suggesting a systematic way to analyze them through the students’ self-reports based on Scherer (2005) and the Geneva Emotion Wheel. We also verified that the use of technology was regarded as a generator of interest by some students. Finally, it was possible to observe that the collaborative tasks promoted collaboration among the students and, thus, we could highlight the importance of working with collaborative tasks in courses of language for specific purposes.

Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) in the Military Context: Incorporating TEIL into the English Curriculum of the Korea Military Academy

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: This study investigates how the teaching English as an international language (TEIL) framework can be integrated into the English curriculum of the Korea Military Academy (KMA). Addressing the research gap on TEIL and military settings, this study first critically reviews issues around the varieties of English (i.e., world Englishes), the international functions of English, and the pedagogical implications of TEIL in today’s globalizing world. The study then examines current challenges and objectives of ELT and suggests practical strategies for incorporating TEIL into the English curriculum of the KMA. The study suggests the following four strategies to apply TEIL into the English curriculum of the KMA: (a) introduce WE/EIL activities into the English Conversation course; (b) establish a WE/EIL course; (c) provide extracurricular WE/EIL activities; and (d) incorporate intercultural content into the Military English course. The study argues that implementing these suggestions would help cadets develop both their linguistic proficiency in English and intercultural communicative competence that are essential for them to become professional military communicators who can effectively communicate with interlocutors from diverse linguistic, cultural, and national backgrounds in international military contexts. While the study contributes to the literature by bridging the gap between TEIL and military contexts, it demonstrates the following implications: (a) a meaningful case of applying TEIL into the military context in Korea; (b) the importance of both linguistic proficiency in English and intercultural competence for ELT in the KMA; and (c) the possibility of influencing the Korea Air Force and Naval Academy to reexamine their English curricula. The study concludes that the English curriculum of the KMA should be revised based on the recognition of the symbiotic relationship among linguistic proficiency in English, exposure to diverse varieties of English, and intercultural competence in order to produce cadets who can effectively communicate in English as a military lingua franca for the success of their designated military objectives in the future. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis English 2019

This thesis examines the effects of the concerted language policy that was developed and implemented by successive French governments in the second half of the 20th century. As a response to the perceived threat of the pre-eminence of the English language in so many different areas of modern life, the French state has, for nearly half a century, sought to secure the place of the French language in the present and the future by developing a series of commissions charged with recommending French technical terms to supplant borrowed or native forms considered to be inadequate, or name new inventions and concepts. The first part of this thesis describes the terminological planning undertaken in France and demonstrates that it is the product of a long series of interventions by the French state in matters of language. This thesis seeks to evaluate the real-world efficacy of terminological planning carried out in France, by identify the factors that facilitate or hinder the implantation of recommended terms. Drawing on similar studies on the real-world results of terminological planning activities in various specialised domains and involving different languages, a variety of different factors supposed to influence the implantation of specialised terms is identified. Methodologies developed in the literature are enhanced to provide a more nuanced and reliable appreciation of the implantation of recommended terms. The first part of this thesis concludes with the enunciation of the general and specific hypotheses and the justification of the choice of the specialised domain to which the studied terms belong. The second part of this thesis then describes the terminological and documentary corpora compiled and details the methodology by which the corpora are exploited, and the results gathered, managed and analysed. This thesis then describes the influence of different factors on the implantation of the recommended terms of space sciences and technologies. After comparing the global trends observed in the data with those observed in other studies, the influences of terminological, socioterminological and procedural factor are studied in turn. Several factors of each type are found to be involved in the successful implantation of some recommended terms, and certain factors studied are found to favour to the implantation of recommended terms, previous studies having found or supposed the opposite. No single factor examined is found to be sufficient to guarantee, alone, the successful implantation of a recommended term, implantation depending on numerous factors, their interplay and their trade-offs.

The evaluation scheme has been established on considerations of: (1) the current IVHS teaching/learning situation (2) general guidelines of communicative language teaching (CLT) (3) notions and issues of English for specific purposes (ESP) (4) evaluation schemes and criteria already proposed by other researchers (5) an analysis ofIVHS students' needs and wants To inquire into students' needs and wants, surveys and interviews have been conducted, including: (1) A needs survey on 217 IVHS graduates for the actual use of English and communicative needs in industries. (2) A wants survey on 645 IVHS students for their expectations toward an IVHS English textbook. (3) Interviews with 5 IVHS graduates, 6 factory supervisors, 5 technical college graduates, 6 English teachers, and 3 Industrial English' teachers for the situation and episodes requiring English in industries, academic use of English, and classroom use of textbooks. The present study faithfully reports on IVHS students' language needs and wants, along with some other suggestions for textbook writers and authorities concerned. Incorporating the findings from surveys and interviews, the evaluation scheme proposed is thus rooted on both theoretical and practical grounds. To ensure optimum usage of the scheme, its scoring system is devised to be flexible and its application is further provided.

Gauthier, Marie-Pierre 08 1900 (has links)
The sexual exploitation for commercial purposes is making more and more victims in India. Considering the scale of the phenomenon and the gravity of its multiple consequences, our research aims at knowing better and at understanding the experience lived by women engaged in sexual activities against payment. More precisely, the objectives of our research are to describe the progress having driven these women to be engaged in such practices as well as their daily reality and how they perceive their situation, to be then capable to formulate propositions of preventive interventions or addressed to the women being already engaged in sexual activities for commercial purposes. We chose to interest ourselves in the women living and prostituting themselves at the train station of Varanasi. A qualitative method was privileged in the realisation of the research. Eight interviews were conducted with women and girls who prostitute themselves at the train station and three with social workers already involved on site. The observation in situ allowed to enrich the collected data. These prostitutes often come from a dysfunctional family circle. It is in situation of flight or family abandonment that they settle down at the train station. It is a place where the women are in situation of extreme vulnerability and where the living conditions are miserable. Exposed to the dangers of the life at the station and accessible to the pimps, prostitution becomes an option to survive. The needs of intervention with these women are multiple and answering to those needs is complex. A harm reduction policy and prevention appear to be avenues to be privileged.

Exploring the gifts and dreams of sewing circle members: skills mastery and peer support as vehicles for increasing self-efficacy among women who are newcomers (immigrants and refugees) to Canada

Williams, Judith January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of women who have migrated to Canada and were members of a Sewing Circle in Central Park, Winnipeg. It was aimed to discover if involvement at the women’s centre increased levels of self-confidence and perceived self-efficacy for members. The study involved conversations and interviews with twelve women. The study was conducted between March and November 2012. Using qualitative research methodology, questions were asked to shape a better understanding of the circumstances that led participants to seek membership with a sewing circle and what membership in such a program had meant for them. The interview design included identifying some of the gifts, assets, resources, interests, skills and abilities the women had pre-arrival to Canada. Participants were asked to share goals and dreams they held for themselves in this new country. The feminist approach used for the study’s framework set the tone for a conversational style interview process, with time set aside for the interviewer and participant to exchange ideas. The collected data identified that all of the participants who had migrated as adults had skills-specific training, careers they enjoyed and/or were entrepreneurs in their home countries or countries of refuge. The main themes that emerged from the data described how the economic realities of learning and mastering the skill of sewing were of value to participants. Peer support, feeling like a part of something and finding a sense of family in the host country were also reasons for membership. The findings from the study show a need for policies that support interventions focused on building more inclusive communities and societies. Communities where academic qualifications, skills specific training, employment and entrepreneurial experience accumulated in other countries provide trajectories to a more direct path forward for people as they transition into the Canadian economy and integrate into Canadian society.
