This thesis uses a hermeneutic text analysis from a queer perspective to analyse Suzanne Collins The hunger games and the religious text Book of Ruth. This has been done to examine if the texts can be used to address the Swedish high school’s values about gender and identity. It was found that Katniss Everdeen has a static male gender and sometimes a parallell female gender. Ruth on the other hand has a dynamic gender that varies along with the gender of the characters that she interacts with. Common for the two main characters is that their gender consequently can be understood within the heterosexual matrix. The results of analysing the texts indicate that there is a variety of gender constructions to be found when reading texts that are different from one another. This leads to the conclusion that students and teachers should read and talk about the texts. Denna studie utreder vilka skönlitterära verk svensklärare arbetar med i svenskundervisningen på gymnasienivå. Syftet är att urskilja huruvida de litterära verken möjliggör identifiering med karaktärer för elever som inte identifierar sig med heteronormativiteten. För att uppnå ovanstående har studien undersökt hur karaktärer i utvalda verk framställer kön, könsidentitet och könsroller samt hur heteronormativiteten upprätthålls och utmanas. I studien kombineras kvantitativ och kvalitativ metod för att uppnå det formulerade syftet. Den kvantitativa metoden består av en materialinsamling av klassuppsättningar med de mest frekvent lånade verken, av svensklärare, på fyra kommunala gymnasieskolor. Därefter har ett urval gjorts, där sex romaner som var bland de mest frekvent lånade samt förekommande verken på skolornas listor, analyserats. Urvalet av romanerna föranledde det kvalitativa tillvägagångssättet. Romanerna analyserades genom så kallade queera läsningar, ursprunget från queerteori, i kombination med närläsning och textsamtal. Resultatet visar att de flesta av karaktärerna i de analyserade romanerna framställs som heterosexuella personer som innehar stereotypiska egenskaper. Traditionella könsroller upprätthålls men utmanas till viss del i vissa böcker. Heteronormativiteten befästs som det normala och det som utmanar normen stigmatiseras på olika sätt. De analyserade verken möjliggör, från ytan, inte någon identifiering av karaktärer för elever som inte identifierar sig med heteronormativiteten. Genom den queera läsningen synliggörs däremot vissa luckor i de litterära verken som erbjuder andra alternativ framför heteronormativiteten.

This thesis aims to highlight, analyse and problematize how sexualities and relationships are constructed as normative and deviant in the Hunger Games trilogy through the character Katniss Everdeen. With this analysis, the thesis aims to further elucidate the pluralism of meaning within literature as a contribution to the field of feminist cultural studies. Queer theory and queer temporality studies have been used to identify and discuss concepts such as the heterosexual matrix, monogamy and mononormativity, polyamory and other marginalized sexualities. A thematic queer reading serves as a methodological approach to the material to enable searching for queer themes in the series. The thesis shows how heterosexuality and monogamy are constructed and portrayed as normative and compulsory, where all other expressions of sexuality are presented as deviant and thereby can be view as different expressions of queer temporality.
