Dans les études sur le transport, les modèles de choix de route décrivent la sélection par un utilisateur d’un chemin, depuis son origine jusqu’à sa destination. Plus précisément, il s’agit de trouver dans un réseau composé d’arcs et de sommets la suite d’arcs reliant deux sommets, suivant des critères donnés. Nous considérons dans le présent travail l’application de la programmation dynamique pour représenter le processus de choix, en considérant le choix d’un chemin comme une séquence de choix d’arcs. De plus, nous mettons en œuvre les techniques d’approximation en programmation dynamique afin de représenter la connaissance imparfaite de l’état réseau, en particulier pour les arcs éloignés du point actuel. Plus précisément, à chaque fois qu’un utilisateur atteint une intersection, il considère l’utilité d’un certain nombre d’arcs futurs, puis une estimation est faite pour le restant du chemin jusqu’à la destination. Le modèle de choix de route est implanté dans le cadre d’un modèle de simulation de trafic par événements discrets. Le modèle ainsi construit est testé sur un modèle de réseau routier réel afin d’étudier sa performance. / In transportation modeling, a route choice is a model describing the selection of a route between a given origin and a given destination. More specifically, it consists of determining the sequence of arcs leading to the destination in a network composed of vertices and arcs, according to some selection criteria. We propose a novel route choice model, based on approximate dynamic programming. The technique is applied sequentially, as every time a user reaches an intersection, he/she is supposed to consider the utility of a certain number of future arcs, followed by an approximation for the rest of the path leading up to the destination. The route choice model is implemented as a component of a traffic simulation model, in a discrete event framework. We conduct a numerical experiment on a real traffic network model in order to analyze its performance.

Music in Motion: A Metaphoric Mapping of Forces in Piano Concertos by Mozart and Schumann

In this thesis, I demonstrate the dynamic way in which musical processes can be described as metaphors. Using Steve Larson’s three main metaphors (gravity, inertia, and magnetism) as a starting point, I propose additional metaphors (friction, repulsion, momentum, wave, orbit, and oscillation) to analyze the first movements of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K 466 and Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 54. These metaphors provide a means to discuss points of convergence and divergence between the Classical style and the early-Romantic style. Additionally, most theorists of the energeticist tradition only discuss motion through prose; I introduce a way to represent these metaphors as musical examples. By focusing on the listener’s experience through musical motion, the model proposed in this thesis is useful, not only for the theorist, but for all who wish to communicate ideas about music in a dynamic way.

This master’s thesis is focused on calculation, simulation and experimental verification of electrodynamic forces acting upon movable contact piece of MCCB and experimental current carrying path. A short description of low voltage circuit breakers is briefly discussed in first chapter. Second chapter is focused upon contact system analysis of particular MCCB with thermomagnetic trigger. A hardness of contact materials is briefly described. A detailed analytical calculations were used to determine electrodynamic forces in MCCB. A FEM simulation in ANSYS Maxwell was carried out for comparison with analytical results. An experimental apparatus was designed and built for verification of constriction repulsion force, so called Holm’s force. A series of measurements is subsequently performed on proposed apparatus and results are compared with results from previous chapters.

INVESTIGATION OF AN ADAPTATION-INDUCED TACTILE SPATIAL ILLUSION: PSYCHOPHYSICS AND BAYESIAN MODELING / INVESTIGATION OF AN ADAPTATION-INDUCED TACTILE SPATIAL ILLUSION

Sensory adaptation is an important aspect of perception. A seemingly non-beneficial consequence of adaptation is that it produces perceptual illusions. For instance, following focal adaptation, the perceived separation between stimuli straddling the adapted attribute or region is often exaggerated. This type of illusion, known as perceptual repulsion, is both a consequence of and a clue to the brain’s coding strategies and how they are influenced by recent sensory events. Adaptation-induced perceptual repulsion has been well documented in vision (e.g. the tilt aftereffect) and to a lesser extent in audition, but rarely studied in touch. The present thesis investigated the effects of adaptation on tactile spatial perception using a combination of human psychophysics and computational modeling. In a two-interval forced choice task, participants compared the perceived separation between two point-stimuli applied on the forearms successively. The point of subjective equality was extracted as a measure of perceived two-point distance. We showed that tactile spatial perception is subject to an adaptation-induced repulsion illusion: vibrotactile adaptation focally reduced tactile sensitivity and significantly increased the perceived distance between points straddling the adapted skin site (Chapter 2). This repulsion illusion, however, was not observed when the intervening skin was desensitized with topical anesthesia instead of vibrotactile adaptation, suggesting that peripheral desensitization alone is insufficient to induce the illusion (Chapter 3). With Bayesian perceptual modeling, we showed that the illusion was consistent with the hypothesis that the brain decodes tactile spatial input without awareness of the adaptation state in the nervous system (Chapter 4). Together, the empirical and theoretical work furthers the understanding of dynamic tactile spatial coding as the somatosensory system adapts to the sensory environment. Its main findings are consistent with the adaptation- induced repulsion illusions reported in vision and audition, suggesting that perception in different sensory modalities shares common processing features and computational principles. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Sensory adaptation can shape how we perceive the world. In this thesis, we showed that the perception of space in touch is pliable and subject to the influence of adaptation. Psychophysical testing in human participants showed that vibratory adaptation induced an illusion that expanded the perceived distance between stimuli on the skin. This illusion provides clues into how information about space in touch is normally processed and interpreted by the brain. In addition, we developed a computational model that used a powerful statistical framework – Bayesian inference – to probe touch on a theoretical basis. To the best of our knowledge, the present thesis provides the first combined psychophysical and computational study on the effects of adaptation on tactile spatial perception. Our findings suggest that touch shares some common information processing principles with vision and hearing, and adaptation plays a functionally similar role in mediating this process across the senses.

Repulsive cues and signalling cascades of the axon growth cone

The aim of the work described in this thesis is to investigate the nature and mechanisms of action of repellent cues for growing axons. In particular I try to resolve the controversy in the literature regarding the need for protein synthesis in the growth cone in response to external guidance cues. My results resolve the conflicting data in the literature on Semaphorin-3A signalling, where differing labs had shown that inhibiting protein synthesis either blocks or has no effect upon repulsion. They demonstrate the presence of at least two independent pathways, protein synthesis-dependent mTOR activation and -independent GSK3? activation. The higher sensitivity of the synthesis-dependent pathway, and its redundancy at higher concentrations where synthesis-independent mechanisms can evoke a full collapse response alone, resolve the apparent conflict. My experiments also demonstrated that Nogo-?20, a domain of Nogo-A, requires local protein synthesis to cause collapse. Unlike Semaphorin-3A, the dependence of collapse upon protein synthesis is concentration-independent and does not involve guanylyl cyclase, but it does share a dependence upon mTOR activity and the synthesis of RhoA, sufficient to cause collapse downstream of Semaphorin-3A. The other axon-repelling domain of Nogo-A, Nogo-66, is partially dependent upon the proteasome instead. It does not share a common pathway with Nogo-?20, except that both are RhoA-dependent. I further attempted to identify the nature of a repulsive activity found in grey matter, ruling out a previously suggested candidate identity. Finally, I examined the phenomenon of nitric oxide-induced growth cone collapse. My experiments revealed that S-nitrosylated glutathione causes growth cone collapse through the activity of protein disulphide isomerase. This mechanism shows only a partial dependence upon soluble guanylyl cyclase, but I argue that it has total dependence upon an S-nitrosylated donor. Coupled with its apparent relation to S-palmitoylation, the reciprocal of S-nitrosylation, I propose that nitric oxide causes collapse by crossing the cell membrane to inhibit S-palmitoylation-determined localisation of proteins. These results reveal some of the many pathways involved in growth cone collapse, whose further characterisation may provide new targets for the treatment of injuries of the central nervous system.

The topic of this work is the structural characterization and theoretical modeling of organic single and heterolayers. The growth of sub-monolayers and monolayers (ML) of the two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons quaterrylene (QT) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) on Ag(111) and Au(111) was investigated. A transition from a disordered, isotropic phase to an ordered phase with increasing coverage was found. The lattice of the ordered phase turned out to be coverage dependent. The intermolecular potential was modeled including Coulomb and van der Waals interaction by a force-field approach. The postulated repulsive character of the potential could be connected to the non-uniform intramolecular charge distribution and to a screening of the van der Waals forces. Furthermore, the influence of the variable lattice constant on the epitaxial growth of HBC was studied. The second part of this work deals with a ML of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on a ML of HBC. In dependency on the initial lattice constant of HBC, a total of three line-on-line (LOL) and point-on-line coincident phases of PTCDA (with respect to HBC) was found. Following an analysis of the general properties of LOL coincident systems via force-field calculations, a new method to predict the structure of such systems is introduced. / Thema dieser Arbeit ist die strukturelle Charakterisierung von organischen Einfach- und Heterolagen sowie deren theoretische Beschreibung und Modellierung. Text in German / Forschungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist das Bewältigungsverhalten von schwer kranken und sterbenden Menschen, die in einer Gesellschaft ihren bevorstehenden Tod bewältigen müssen, die ambivalent mit dieser Thematik umgeht. Die unterschiedlichen menschlichen Bewältigungsformen können mit den bisher gängigen Zugangswegen über Phasenmodelle nicht immer befriedigend erklärt werden. Hilfreich erscheint hier das aus der Stressforschung stammende Copingmodell von Richard S. Lazarus und seiner Forschungsgruppe, um Menschen verstehen zu lernen. In wieweit dieses Verstehensmodell aus einem säkularen Forschungszweig für die Seelsorgearbeit unterstützend sein kann, soll in dieser Arbeit geklärt werden. Als Grundlage dienen Seelsorgegespräche mit unterschiedlichen Menschen, die eine große Bandbreite an Bewältigungsverhalten demonstrierten. Die Herausforderung lag darin, Menschen in ihrem Sterben umfassend wahrzunehmen, um möglichst viele Impulse zu erkennen, die ihr Bewältigungsverhalten beeinflussten. Aus der Aufarbeitung dieses Verhaltens ergaben sich Perspektiven für die Begleitung sterbender Menschen. Dies hat gleichbedeutend Konsequenzen für den seelsorgerlichen Umgang mit Sterbenden. Das Wissen um das christlich-biblische Menschenbild und die umfassende Kenntnis der Copingforschung können sich durchaus gegenseitig befruchten, denn beide gehen auf die Individualität des Menschen ein und unterstützen ihn seinen eigenen Zugang zu seinem Leben und seinem Tod finden zu lassen. Dies führt letztlich zu einer intensiven Kommunikation zwischen Patient und Seelsorger, der den Mut und das Vertrauen haben darf, dem Sterbenden eigenständig sein Leben bewältigen zu lassen. Die Ansätze der Copingforschung bieten weitreichende Impulse für vielfältige seelsorgerliche Fragestellungen auch außerhalb der Sterbebegleitung. Object of research of this thesis is the specific behaviour of seriously ill and dying humans coping with their impending death and being members of a society having an ambivalent attitude towards death. People's different and individual ways of coping cannot always be sufficiently explained by the current use of phasing models. In this context the "Coping Model" by Richard S. Lazarus and his stress research group seems to be helpful in understanding dying humans. In how far this comprehension model from a secular branch of research can be supportive of pastoral counselling is the objective of this thesis. Counselling dialogues with different persons who show a wide range of coping form the basis of this research. The challenge of this paper was to observe and sense humans in their death experiences from a broader point of view in order to identify as much as possible kinds of impulses crucial to their coping behaviour. Analysing the behaviour of dying humans led to new perspectives on spiritual guidance. Tantamountly, this has its consequences for spiritual dealing with dying humans. The comprehension of the biblical Christian idea of man and a detailed knowledge of coping research can, by all means, be interactive and thus show positive results as both respond to a person's individuality and support them in their own ways of approach to life and death. Finally, this leads to an intensive dialogue between patient and pastor who can have the courage and the confidence in letting the person find his own way of coping. The different kinds of approach of the coping model research offer far-reaching impulses to various pastoral questions going even beyond terminal care. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th.
