The Conception of Time in Virginia Woolf´s Novels in Relation to the Narrative Techniques Used by the AuthorGEYEROVÁ, Veronika January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on Virginia Woolf's conception of time in relation to the narrative techniques the author uses in her novels. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the conception of time characteristic of Woolf's prose but also to point out how closely related this conception of time is to the narrative techniques used by the author. To capture the development of Woolf's conception of time and narrative methods, the novels are analysed chronologically according to their dates of publication. Significant part of this thesis is also devoted to the philosophical, scientific and historical context in which the novels were written because the author's treatment of time and narrative techniques are directly inspired by philosophical and-scientific theories and socio-historical changes at the turn of the 20th century.

Increasing energy efficiency of O-RAN through utilization of xAppsBorg, Fredrik January 2023 (has links)
As 5G becomes more established and faces widespread roll-out, energy consumption of radio access networks around the globe will increase. Since the high-frequency radio waves used in 5G communication has a shorter effective range compared to the waves used in previous generations, 5G networks will require a higher number of radio units to compensate for their reduced range. Since the transmission of radio waves is a costly procedure in terms of energy consumption, this further increases the relevancy of radio equipment when considering solutions for increasing radio access networks' energy efficiency. This thesis has therefore provided a possible solution for increasing the energy efficiency of an O-RAN compliant radio access network by decreasing the energy consumption of its radio units. If a network's radio units are capable of entering a low-power sleep mode whenever they are left idle, i.e. not handling any traffic, the energy efficiency of a network can thus be increased by forcing its radio units to enter sleep mode as often as possible. This can be done by offloading traffic from radio units with little traffic onto other nearby radio units. The handovers required to perform such offloading, however, need to be predicted on the fly somewhere within the network. The solution proposed within this thesis therefore utilizes a component indigenous to the O-RAN architecture called RIC and its functionality-defining xApps which are capable of automatically detecting situations where radio units can be put to sleep as well as handling the offloading procedures. Through testing inside a simulated network, the set of xApps designed as a solution resulted in a potential 20-35% decrease in energy consumption among a radio access network's radio units.

The exchange: reprogramming vacant built landscapes to increase social equity and create identityPumphrey, Jared T. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Blake Belanger / This master’s project and report examines the correlation between social inequity and vacancy to develop a phased revitalization strategy for Raytown, Missouri. The perception of vacant built landscapes cause people to interpret places as having no productive use (Corbin 2003). Vacant spaces appear void of opportunities and are fueled by a capitalist society where markets move toward the urban fringe in order to remain competitive (Fainstein 2010). Vacancy creates a cultural response that “erodes the local social fabric, [signifying] the ills of neglect, [and] communicating to people the futility of inner-city living” (Jakle and Wilson 1992, 175). As a result, people passing through a community dismiss these vacant spaces because what they see is a place of little value. The perception of vacancy can lead to severe social inequity as society’s affluent members move from inner-city cores. Economic viability and the overall quality of life begins to decrease.
Building on the Creating Sustainable Places Initiative for the Kansas City region and planning efforts for redeveloping the currently unused Rock Island Rail Corridor, this project explores how vacant built landscapes within Raytown’s Central Business District can be reprogrammed to establish place identity. Through critical mapping, key equity dilemmas at the metropolitan level are brought forth to identify issues that can be addressed through corridor redevelopment in Raytown. Mapping vacancies in the Raytown CBD identifies current vacant parcels. Together, the identification of vacant parcels with parcel size indicates primary redevelopment sites that can readily support higher density development in anticipation of a potential rail transit system.
Using a phased approach, temporary design solutions regain public interest in the community, while working to develop mixed-use neighborhoods, pedestrian oriented streetscapes, and improved open space amenities at future build out. Strategies at each phase provide opportunities for community gathering and living choices that accommodate a variety of people. Studying social inequity and vacancy allows landscape architecture professionals the opportunity to better understand this phenomenon and promote community revitalization through the creation of welcoming places for all people.

Previous issue date: 2014-02-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present research conducts a study about evil based on the book Quincas Borba, by Machado de Assis, under the theological and philosophical viewpoint as the subject has raised several questions in both fields of knowledge. At one time, we intend to indicate that it is possible that a literary work may inspire a theological and philosophical thought without being necessary to prove the religious faith or to unveil a philosophical theory established by the writer. For that purpose, we suggest as authors the theologians Andrés Torres Queiruga, Juan Antonio Estrada, and Ivone Gebara, as well as the philosophers Paul Ric ur, Blaise Pascal and Arthur Schopenhauer. At the same time, we emphasize the Book of Ecclesiastes, of which the carioca writer was a constant reader. Therefore we aim at highlighting and understanding more deeply in the above mentioned book the presence of evil in its most varied aspects in human relations.

This research focuses on police responses provided by the RIC officers of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) with people in crisis or suffering from a mental disorder. The RIC agents are frontline patrol officers who have received complete training on the principles of intervention in times of crisis. This specialized response model is a proactive alternative that aims to improve police action in crisis situations and to ensure a better management of this population by the institutional resources.
Deinstitutionalization of care and psychiatric services has led to an increased number of people with mental disorders in the community. Therefore, this increase has resulted in more frequent interactions between the police and this type of clientele. Interventions in times of crisis are unique and complex and require a higher level of understanding of human crises. The police have admitted that these interventions represent a significant part of their work and that traditional police training did not prepare them sufficiently to respond appropriately.
In response to these considerations and in order to improve their abilities, the police forces equipped themselves with police response models specialized in crisis intervention. The most common approach is the crisis intervention team (CIT), also called the Memphis model. There are several variations of this model, but the main components are advanced training and consolidation of a partnership with the health system which both remain in all of these structures.
The objective of this research is to explore the perceptions of the RIC officers, their partner and the officers waiting for training in order to better understand and contrast their visions and practices in a crisis or mental health context.
We conducted 12 qualitative interviews with officers from SPVM. Overall, participants report that their interventions with people in crisis or with mental disorders are more rooted in a perspective of counselling. They also mention that communication, listening and trust must be privileged above all other techniques in situations that allow them. Furthermore, force should be used only when needed, that is, when their safety or the safety of others is at risk. They also admit that the participation of mental health workers enables a deeper analysis of the situation or the mental state of the person targeted by the intervention. Secondly, in regards to the limits of traditional police training, the candidates have raised that there is a lack of knowledge in the field of mental health and a difficulty in assessing the mental state of the person as well as the needs for transportation. Thirdly, the RIC officers say that they have a better understanding of mental health issues, enhanced communication skills, a deeper analysis of the situation, a greater legal knowledge, an understanding of the operation of hospital services and a particular appreciation for the sharing of knowledge and the principle of containment. They also expressed the importance of the reports to document the evolution of the mental state of a person and they add that the time dimension plays a key role in the final resolution of the issue. As for the partners, they discuss similar benefits. However, after training, they recognize even more the importance of their role in the security of their partner and therefore, they pay more attention during these interventions.
Finally, non-trained agents formulate expectations concerning the development of tools and skills, which will be addressed in their training. Overall, the RIC agents and their partners changed their practices to align them with the philosophy of crisis intervention. They also have more confidence in their abilities and skills to intervene with people in crisis or suffering from mental disorders from the knowledge acquired in training.

Charging behaviours of space dielectric materials, under electron beam irradiation, is of special interest for future spacecraft needs, since this mechanism could induce electrostatic discharges and consequently damages on the sensitive systems on board. In order to assess the risks of charging and discharging, this work aims at understanding the overall charge transport mechanisms and predicting the electrical behaviour of the insulator materials, especially Teflon® FEP and Kapton® HN. For an optimized prediction, the first part of our work is thus to check whether lateral conduction process can take place in the overall charge transport mechanism. Through the definition of a new experimental set-up and protocol, we have been able to discriminate between lateral and bulk conductivity and to reveal the presence of lateral conductivity that is enhanced by radiation ionization processes. We have been able to demonstrate as well that lateral intrinsic conductivity is enhanced with the increase current density and when approaching the sample surface. The second part of our work deals with the characterization of the electrical charging behaviour of Teflon® FEP under multi-energetic electron beam irradiation and the modelling of the overall bulk charge transport mechanisms. An experimental study on charge potential evolution as a function of electron spectrum, electric field, relaxation time, dose and dose rate, was performed. A numerical model has been developed to describe the effect of the different abovementioned mechanisms on the evolution of the surface potential. This model agrees correctly with the experimental phenomenology at qualitative level and therefore allows understanding the physical mechanisms steering charge transport in Teflon® and Kapton®.

Despite having strong theoretical models, the current limitation in our understanding of the small-scale structures of galaxies is linked to the lack of observational evidences. Many powerful telescopes and instruments have been developed in the last decades, however one of these strongest tools, namely Adaptive Optics (AO), can only be used on a very limited number of targets. Indeed, for AO to be efficient, a bright star is required close to the scientific target, typically under 30 . This is mandatory for the AO systems to be able to measure the atmospheric turbulence and this condition is rarely satisfied for extended extragalactic targets such as galaxies. The main part of this thesis work consisted in going deeper in the analysis of the inner tens of parsecs of Active Nuclei (AGN) by combining different techniques to obtain and to interpret new data. In this context, we developed a new radiative transfer code to analyse the polarimetric data. A second part of my work was dedicated to a high angular resolution study of Super Star Clusters (SSC) in a new system, thanks to data obtained with the AO demonstrator CANARY instrument.

Snail family of transcription factors is fundamental to the "epithelial-mesenchymal transition", morphogenic process essential to embryonic development and metastatic phenomena in tumors.Snail's activity is modulated in two ways in mammals. (i) The human promoter harbors definite regions that respond to repressor factors, which prevail in epithelial cells; and differentiated elements that respond to known inducers of the "epithelial-mesenchymal transition". (ii) Snail's activity is also conditioned by its subcellular localization, mechanism not dependent on its transcriptional control: Snail phosphorylation determines whether Snail is excluded or not from the nucleus. When in the cytosol, Snail is unable to act as a transcriptional repressor, but however binds to the microtubular meshwork, which becomes stabilized and whose dynamism is conditioned as a result. This fact coincides with the activation of the RhoA GTPase and reorientation of vimentin filaments, both phenomena being related to the acquisition of cell motility. The transcriptional repressor and the microtubule dynamics effects are probably two coordinated events necessary to Snail's biological role in mammals.
