The Round Table, 1910-66

May, Alexander January 1995 (has links)
This thesis traces the history of the London Round Table group and of the Round Table magazine from their origins in 1909-10 until the decision to launch a "new" Round Table in 1966. It takes as its focus the ideas put forward by members of the group, in the Round Table and elsewhere, on a range of Imperial and international problems. It utilises knowledge on the authorship of Round Table articles in order to clarify the processes by which Round Table policy was made, and the role of different individuals within the group. It examines the rôle of the Round Table as a pressure group for Imperial reform and in particular its relationship to Empire federalism, seeking to elucidate the extent to which it was able to act coherently, and attempting to describe its aims, methods and influence. On the question of federalism, the thesis finds an inability to agree on details, but also a continuing belief in the necessity for constitutional unit until the late 1940s. It suggests that this belief was not entirely unrealistic. The thesis argues that, despite differences of emphasis, the Round Table was able to develop a distinctive ideology of Imperialism which was strongly supportive of the Imperial rôle yet also responsive to the need for change. It finds that the group was only briefly influential on government policy, under Lloyd Georfge's administration, but it argues that the group saw its main purpose as that of influencing long-term opinion rather than short-term policy. It suggests that the group was able to play an important mediating rôle, between conservatism and radicalism, and between policy-making and opinion.

Vladimir's Round Table by Stefans Grove : transcription for Two Pianos

Hollins, Brendan Vincent 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus (Performance)--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The work represented here is a transcription for two pianos of Vladimir’s Round Table, a relatively unknown, large-scale orchestral work by Stefans Grove. This particular transcription involved an intensive study of the orchestral score in order to best reproduce the work in the most effective way possible for two pianos, as well as to create a sound and convincing work for the two-piano repertoire. The process involved academic as well as pianistic substantiations regarding the inclusion or exclusion of various elements of the orchestral score. It is my hope that the final product is a good representation of a work supported by academic research but not so much as to exclude the possibility of freedom of performance. The ultimate aim of this transcription is to hopefully re-ignite interest in the work as well as to expose it to a wider audience and, in turn, encourage performance of the work in its original form.

Concepção da sexualidade de estudantes surdos usuários de Libras em uma escola polo / The conception of sexuality of deaf students who use Libras in a "Pole School"

The present research aims to investigate the construction of sexuality of deaf students in a State school for the deaf. It´s a "pole school" abstracting a medium-sized town, located in the interior of the State of São Paulo in Brazil. The methodological approach used in this research was qualitative, through observation, round-table discussions and semi structured interviews. The themes to be worked were proposed throught these round-table discussions at which the students brought their concerns, doubts and necessities. All round-table discussion were recorded and transcribed. Deaf people integrate a linguistic minority, therefore, it is common that they don't feel belonging to the listener group inside and outside the school, once for this belonging to occur, communication is one of the essential factors. In this aspect, in school, the Deaf, do not receive the necessary information for their full development, for using Libras and most of the students do not know such a language, which makes difficult their learning. The lack of knowledge of Libra among those listeners who surround the Deaf and the little dissemination of this language, ends up leading to a distorted vision of multiple connections, including those that encompass the construction of sexuality. Therefore, this research has followed, investigated and increased the information about sexuality, brought by the deaf students' experiences of this "pole school", to identify the obstacles and challenges these students go through so as to promote with them debates, constructions and deconstructions of themes about sexuality.

This dissertation presents a more comprehensive study of Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur from the three aspects of the Round Table. I focus on the following elements especially: the evolution of the shape and significance of the Round Table; visual and verbal representations of the Round-Table ideal by means of tournaments and the Pentecostal Oath; the conflicts the table creates between fellowship and rivalry; the chasm between brothers bound by oath and those tied by blood; and its fall due to the violation of the Pentecostal Oath. Through these perspectives, I would like to reveal the functions of the Round Table and capture the essence of Le Morte Darthur. / 博士(英文学) / Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature / 同志社大学 / Doshisha University

A history of the Cossack assembly and its Arthurian connection

Paikoff, Richard Jacob 02 August 2012 (has links)
The main intent of this thesis is to review the history and roots of the Cossack assembly, and to analyze its connection to western civilization. In terms of the roots of the Cossack assembly, this thesis will explore the Scytho-Sarmatian, the early Slavic, the Novgorodian, as well as the Turkic-Mongol influences that led to its creation. While the Zaporozhian Cossack assembly will be discussed, the primary focus of the history of the Cossack assembly section will deal with the Don Cossacks’ assembly, since the practices and traditions inherent in this structure are representative of most Cossack groups. In addition to reviewing the Sarmatian Hypothesis, this thesis will also examine the connections and parallels between the Arthurian legends, the ancient Iranian governing practices, and the Cossack assembly. It is thus hoped that this multileveled analysis will generate a comprehensive portrait of the Cossack assembly and, through its ancient Iranian predecessor’s connection to the Arthurian Round Table, prompt a reconsideration of analytical approaches to both the foundations of Cossack and western democracy. / text

Fortune, Providence et liberté : une lecture augustinienne du cycle arthurien en prose / Fortune, Providence and liberty : an Augustinian reading of the Arthurian Prose Cycle

Michel, Servane 15 March 2014 (has links)
Arthurian history is eschatological : the prose cycle drive it from evangelical times to the end of king Arthur's reign. With the Grail theme, narratives links their contemporary world straight to Sacred History and claims for a kind of prophetical authority. This scheme may be interpreted according to The City of God, where Augustine reads both Scripture and profane history. Through his exegesis he intends to show the action of providence and the process of salvation in human history. The prose romances themselves end in salvation : after King Arthur's fall and the destruction of chivalry, the last word is given to conversion – Lancelot's soul is taken to Paradise, after Gawain's one. For those excellent knights La Mort Artu should be read as an apocalypse, not only in the sense of punishment – La Queste had condemned the Arthurian world as « terrien » – but also as a "revelation" : profane heroism is identified to the highest Christian desire. The well-known presence of Fortune in La Mort Artu takes another sense : in personal or collective calamities, this character points out either the moral scandal or the irrational aspect of their causes. With Fortune, aventure and mescheance also relay Christian language to narrate the unexplainable. Prose romances betray Augustine's precepts : The City of God forbade the use of Fortune or similar terms that contradict the Christian faith. But in Arthurian romances providentialism is nonetheless present and proclaimed. In that "Age of Faith", the proper language of romance expresses the tragical aspects of human existence, and either lead to an eternal destiny, in the act of faith, or stay in the horizon of the terrestrial city.

ABSTRACT There is little research and few studies about the professional profile of the tutors who are the leading actors in this scenery not only about their college education but also about their continuous education. This happens in spite of a general understanding about the importance of on going educational processes to improve the quality of education and of the professionals who work in the field. This is a fundamental subject for Early Childhood Education, considering the brazilian history of the field and given the importance of recognition of their singularities. Oral history was the basis for the research of the specificities of the educational contents needed in this profession aiming at understanding which experiences were relevant in shaping their professional identity. The epistemological and methodological premises for the research were taken from Bakhtin’s ideas and his brazilian interpreters, especially the concept of dialogue, using life histories. The field research involved listening to tutors in small groups from talk wheels – the wheel of tutors and the observation wheel - as well as interviews with experts as methodological tools. With this large round table some ideas emerged strongly: professional training as unique process of coming into being; the tutor as a partner in the adventure of becoming a teacher; the stengthen of a training process based in different and varied experiences; the emergence of listening to the voices of children as a main tool to the training process. One other relevant idea that emerged from the study was the role of dialogue, of different experiences and life histories as strong guides for both research and training processes. The study with these caracteristics consolidates a committed conception of education leading to better understanding the nature of experiences which are fundamental to the training process and to its results. The round table metaphor helped to build the concept that life and the learning processes which are part of it must balance multiple experiences without hierarchies or scissions because in fact there are no clear limits. Therefore, it is expected that the dialogue about the round table of experiences will contribute so the research in the field strengthen self knowledge and experiential knowledge paradigm and the professional development rests upon personal internal factors.

An evaluation of the most prevalent budgeting practice in the South African business community

Sabela, Sibusiso Wellington January 2012 (has links)
This study is based on a combination of existing theoretical knowledge and recently conducted empirical research. The analysis of knowledge that has come from the academic world has resulted in an extensive review of budgeting. The review starts at the inception of budgets in the nineteenth century, where it was just a tool to manage cost and cash flows. The study follows the trajectory of the evolution of budgeting from Traditional Budgeting practices that lasted for decades to, what is known today as, Better Budgeting. The evolution of budgeting has been driven by the desire of organisations to mitigate business challenges which result from the economic volatilities of the day as well as to remain competitive. This desire to mitigate business challenges remains relevant today and demands that organisations be equipped with best practice management tools, systems and business processes. In order to manage organisations effectively and efficiently, Management Accounting as a discipline is in a state of constant development. Over the years, a number of new innovations have been introduced in the field of Management Accounting. These include (but are not limited to) concepts such as Activity Based Costing (ABC), Activity Based Management (ABM), Activity Based Budgeting (ABB), Target Costing, Strategic Cost Management and Economic Value Added (Budgeting)(EVA™), Zero Based Budgeting (ZBB), Rolling Budgets and Forecasting (RBF), Balanced-Score Card (BSC) and Beyond Budgeting. These innovations aim to provide business managers with practical value adding solutions for a better understanding of the organisation’s product or service costing and planning strategies. The focus of this study is on innovations relating to the planning strategies of the organisation. Innovations that relate to planning include: Activity Based Budgeting, Zero Based Budgeting and Rolling Budgeting and Forecasting. The budget evolution is not short of academic value; researchers have conducted empirical surveys and have provided a theoretical perspective on the subject matter with fruitful findings. There appears to be a consensus regarding a total overhaul of Traditional Budgeting with the clear intention to move towards Better Budgeting. In the midst of this continued research work, there has been an emergence of a radical view about budgeting. This radical view concerns pursuing an agenda that suggests that organisations must stop preparing budgets. The gist of this radical development can be summed up as the limitations presented by budgeting in organisations. This recent concept has been coined as Beyond Budgeting. To remain globally competitive, South African organisations must keep abreast with the latest developments in management practices. This study therefore provides a good platform for South African organisations to obtain knowledge in what other countries are already doing around the subject of budgeting. The study has a two-pronged problem statement. Firstly, do organisations still budget? Secondly, what do organisations feel is the future for budgeting? Are they keeping with Traditional Budgeting, moving towards Better Budgeting or rather going further and looking Beyond Budgeting? The South African business community is no exception to this global budget debate about Traditional Budgeting, Better Budgeting and Beyond Budgeting. To gather evidence, the study made use of an online survey questionnaire that is attached as Appendix 2. An email invite containing an Internet hyperlink was sent to respondents. Respondents were expected to click on the hyperlink to gain access the pre-designed online survey questionnaire. Upon the analysis of the results, it was concluded that the South African business community still relies on budgeting, with 90% of the respondents saying that budgeting is indispensable, as their organisations will not manage without budgeting. Furthermore, there was a clear-cut move from Traditional Budgeting towards Better Budgeting. The study also concluded that the move towards Better Budgeting is supported by the inability of Traditional Budgeting to keep up with the rapid changes in macro and micro-economic factors. Also interesting to note is the revelation that 0% of the respondents indicated that they had adopted and implemented Beyond Budgeting. This resistance by the South African business community to the adoption of Beyond Budgeting and the resulting slower pace of this new practice's implementation is actually similar to the pace at which global organisations have received this radical budgeting practice. / Dissertation (MCom) University of Pretoria, 2012 / am2013 / Financial Management / unrestricted
