Adaptation and Coping Processes as Reported by Army Reservists and their Families throughout One Year Following the Soldier's Deployment to Combat Locations

Looper, Ruthann Rindal January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Callista Roy / The purpose of this secondary analysis was to understand the coping and adaptation processes of reservist soldiers and one family member throughout the first year following deployment to Iraq. A directed content analysis based on the Roy (2009, 2011) conceptualization of coping and adaptation was accomplished on 75 interviews from 20 Army Reserve and family participants. Research questions were; which contextual stimuli affected the coping capacity for dealing with focal stimuli; military deployment and reintegration. Second, whether resourceful and focused coping at Wave 1 positively influenced the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Third, whether physical and fixed coping at Wave 1 negatively affected the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Fourth, whether coping capacity varied during the reintegration year. Findings confirmed primary study outcomes (MacDermid, 2006) where participants described individualized reintegration. Informants' depictions were different from the previously published, "New Emotional Cycles of Deployment." Contextual stimuli were complicating or protective and exerted substantial influence on managing the deployment and reintegration. Cognitive-emotional processing the meaning and repercussions of the deployment is part of the reintegration process. Resourceful and focused coping positively affected the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Insufficient reports of physical and fixed coping precluded determining its effect. Coping efforts were a discrete measure of coping extrapolated from narratives, and were found to fluctuate throughout the year. When demands intensified, participants accelerated their coping efforts as predicted by the Roy adaptation model (2009). Coping strategies were effective or ineffective. Concepts of transcendence, transformation, and hope were understood in new ways within the Roy model. Transcendence in individuals and groups was further explicated. Spirit was another concept from Roy's work that was observed in the participants. Implications for policy, theory, nursing practice, education and research are discussed. Keywords: adaptation, adaptation level, coping, coping efforts, Roy adaptation model, spirit, transcendence, transformation, hope, military deployment, post-deployment, reintegration, Reservist, military family, deployment cycle, directed content analysis / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2012. / Submitted to: Boston College.

January 2019 (has links)
In this research, we have used two group of rats, in which one of them was induced to Aortic Stenosis (EAo) by placing a silver clip in ascending aortic root and another was only submitted to surgery process named Control (Sham). Both of groups have been to two different diets (Normolipidic and Hiperlipidic), wherein we evaluated responses of mechanical variables developed tension (DT) and resting tension (RT), according to the isolated papillary muscle’s technique with seven concentrations of calcium in order to appreciate the process of Cardiac Remodeling. At first, we have been interested in to compare means in the groups constituted by the combination of two factors that resulted in four groups (G1 - EAo and normolipidic (n = 12), G2 - EAo and hyperlipidic (n = 13), Sham and normolipidic (n = 13) and G4 - Sham and hyperlipidic (n = 14) about the two involved variables to verify differences in two factors effects and in their interaction, applying multivariate linear model (MLM) for this. In addition, we have concerned in to describe mechanical responses mean profile in different calcium concentrations (0; 5 mM, 1; 0 mM, 1; 5 mM, 2; 0 mM, 2; 5 mM, 3; 0 mM, 3; 5 mM) applying the mu... "...life had been lived" : Gender performance and woman objectification in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things

Hera Culda, Lucia January 2019 (has links)
This essay investigates women’s situation at home and in society, in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, from a gender performance perspective. The essay also explores the pedagogical implications of using the novel in the EFL classroom. The gender performance perspective is explored through the analysis of three female characters, Ammu, Mammachi and Baby Kochamma, whose lives reflect women’s struggle to escape traditional caste values, patriarchy and colonial power. The pedagogical perspective focuses on existing trends in literature and language teaching and the possibilities that postcolonial literary texts have to offer in the EFL classroom.

Bridging the Generation Gap in the Works of Gabrielle Roy

Dean, Camille G. 11 October 1995 (has links)
Gabrielle Roy's novels are filled with images of childhood and aging, of family, of rural and urban French-Canadian settings, and of Roy's experiences as a young, impressionable teacher. The generation gaps present themselves in many human relationships and thread themselves throughout Roy's works. For this thesis, the generation gaps will be studied in three important relationships. Part One presents largely the relationships within the microcosm of the family. It explores the gap between mothers and daughters. La Rue Deschambault, La Route d'Altamont, and Bonheur d'Occasion are included. The relationship between the father and child in La Rue Deschambault, Bonheur d'Occasion, and Alexandre Chenevert will then be explored. Important elements of these relationships are: the circle of life, the inevitable resemblances between parent and child, and their reversal of roles as the parent ages. Part Two focuses on bridging the gap between teacher and student in Gabrielle Roy's works. This relationship is studied extensively in both La Petite Poule d'Eau and Ces Enfants de Ma Vie. The teachers in Roy's works represent the link from the family to the outside world, as education empowers students to progress. Part Two also presents the elderly as teachers of the children in their lives. This special relationship is seen in La Route d'Altamont. Part Three studies the relationship between life and nature. Roy's urban novels, Bonheur d'Occasion and Alexandre Chenevert, in which the author draws contrasts between rural and urban life, are explored. The gap between the urban dweller and nature is focused on in Alexandre Chenevert. The bond that links humankind and animals is studied in La Montagne Secrete. There is an important contrast between the inherent need for solitude and humankind's communion. The artist's place within the universe is shown to be unique. In this macro setting of humankind and the universe, all human relation ships take their places within these interwoven, circular patterns.

Faktorer som påverkar föräldrars beslutsfattande gällande att vaccinera sitt barn mot influensa : en litteraturöversikt / Factors that influence parents’ decision making regarding vaccination of their child against influenza : a literature review

Back, Alexandra, Olofsson, Annie January 2017 (has links)

Lundén, Louise, Åkesson, Julia January 2011 (has links)
Background: Being subjected to an extensive burn injury affects the victim´s physique, social life and its psyche. A burn injury can be determined as a trauma. Burn injuries often make the patient suffer from pain, anxiety and lack of a social life. Sister Callista Roy´s theory was used to analyze the result of the study. One of her goal is to promote the adaptive function of self-perception. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe how patients with extensive burns and their families experienced the return to daily life. Method: This literature review is based on four qualitative and four quantitative scientific articles. Results: The results showed that family support played a major role in the patient´s life after the burn injury, it is important for the further rehabilitation. Burned patients use different coping strategies to solve this particularly traumatic situation. Several of the burn victims experienced an altered self-image as a burn injury changes the appearance. Many felt that it restrained them from participating in social contexts. Result is based on three different themes: I and myself, I together with my family and I together with the society. Conclusion: Patients and their family adapt to changes in their daily life different. Development of strategies was important to be able to return to daily life. Therefore, it is important for nurses to provide information on different strategies.

Andersson, Ingemar, Norlander, Yvonne January 2009 (has links)

Encounters in Cultural Production of Globalized India: Cinema, Television, and Arundhati Roy

Li-Chyang Chen, Calvin 13 September 2012 (has links)
In 2001, after more than sixty years of independence, India came to be coined into the acronym, BRIC, recognizing India for her emerging economic development status. Liberalization of India¡¦s economy since 1991 from stringent state control has resulted in the opening up its markets to world participation in the form of lowered trade barriers, and invitation of foreign direct investments. Such changes in the economy have stirred up both external and internal imaginations of a globalized India no longer focused exclusively on her films, television, and literatures, but as an intricately woven entity of conglomerate spheres involving economics, demographics, histories, political science, and so on. This is to inspect the composites of each arena through historical surveys and position each arena¡¦s globality with their respective locality to suggest what they produced for the world, in addition to how globalization produced them. In doing so, the popular culture of the Indian cinema(s) and the Indian television are analyzed as dialogues between Indian nation state and the global rest, striving to differ from the unidirectional discourse of cultural imperialism/hegemony by the general West in the process of globalization. Extensive examples are drawn to map the contours of a globalized India, as well as other social issues are also addressed by introducing Arundhati Roy¡Ðwho has written extensively on various subjects linked to globalization¡Ðfor a comprehensive picture of the issues the nation is currently embroiled in in its encounter with globalization. Drawing on Arundhati Roy¡¦s criticism of corporate globalization, the suggestion of a morally and socially responsible globalization is evoked for an alternative global imagination to belonging.

Étude génétique de "Jeannot-la-Corneille" de Gabrielle Roy

Courchesne, Sarah Geneviève, 1980- January 2009 (has links)
Researchers currently are according a great deal of importance to the genetic analysis of Gabrielle Roy's writings. Indeed, the author's manuscripts reveal important details about her creative process. In this thesis, we study the changes the author made to both style and content at different stages of the writing of "Jeannot-la-Corneille", one of the recits making up Cet ete qui chantait. The latter is one of Roy's least studied books. Our analysis of the modifications the author made to the content and style of her texts allows us to understand the reasons behind these changes and gives us as well a sense of Gabrielle Roy's creative work. Admired for the apparent ease with which she writes, the author reworks her text tirelessly in order to achieve the desired effects: precision, accuracy and musicality. Adjectives, adverbs, nouns, all parts of speech are subject to change in this quest to improve descriptions and, in so doing, deliver more effectively a message of hope.
