Álvarez Pizarro, Yuli Andrea January 2015 (has links)
Two popular wireless communication devices are considered in this research. Firstly, the handset Bluetooth which is one of the most economic mobile accessories and the eyewear Communicating Device which are a representation of the new futuristic vision. It is well known that the absorption of electromagnetic waves on the human head for a certain period of time may lead to health problems such as headaches. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is simulated to four different head models for two approaches that perform variations in the dielectric parameters in the head tissues and compared with the available international recommendations (IEC 62209-2, 2010; ICNIRP, 2009; IEEE C95.1,2005; WHO, 2006; IEEE, 2002). The first model used is the Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM phantom), as well as three realistic models of human head (i.e., a 34 years old adult and two children of 10 and 6 years old). The simulations were performed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the frequency used to feed the antennas was 2.45 GHz. Experimental measurements of transmission power in Bluetooth device are also described.

Olin, John January 2017 (has links)

Evaluation of Some Statistical Methods for the Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes

Haddon, Andrew L 24 March 2015 (has links)
Microarray platforms have been around for many years and while there is a rise of new technologies in laboratories, microarrays are still prevalent. When it comes to the analysis of microarray data to identify differentially expressed (DE) genes, many methods have been proposed and modified for improvement. However, the most popular methods such as Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM), samroc, fold change, and rank product are far from perfect. When it comes down to choosing which method is most powerful, it comes down to the characteristics of the sample and distribution of the gene expressions. The most practiced method is usually SAM or samroc but when the data tends to be skewed, the power of these methods decrease. With the concept that the median becomes a better measure of central tendency than the mean when the data is skewed, the tests statistics of the SAM and fold change methods are modified in this thesis. This study shows that the median modified fold change method improves the power for many cases when identifying DE genes if the data follows a lognormal distribution.

The Development of Photosensitive Surfaces to Control Cell Adhesion and Form Cell Patterns

Cheng, Nan January 2012 (has links)
Cell adhesion is the first step of cell response to materials and the extracellular matrix (ECM), and is essential to all cell behaviours such as cell proliferation, differentiation, migration and apoptosis for anchor-dependent cells. Therefore, studies of cell attachment have important implications to control and study cell behaviours. During many developed techniques for cell attachment, the manipulation of surface chemistry is a very important method to control initial cell attachment. To control cell adhesion on a two-dimensional surface is a simple model to study cell behaviours, and is a fundamental topic for cell biology, tissue engineering, and the development of biosensors. From the engineering point of view, the preparation of a material with controllable surface chemistry can help studies of cell behaviours and help scientists understand how surface features and chemistry influence cell behaviours. During the fabrication, the challenge is to create a surface with heterogeneous surface properties in the micro scale and subsequently to guide cell initial adhesion. In order to control cell adhesion in a spatial and temporal manner, a photochemical method to control surface chemistry was employed to control the surface property for cell adhesion in this project. Two photocleavable derivatives of the nitrobenzyl group were tried on two types of surfaces: a model self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with alkanethiol-gold surface and biodegradable chitosan. Reactive functional groups on two different surfaces can be inactivated by covalent binding with these photocleavable molecules, and light can be further introduced into the system as a stimulus to recover their reactivity. By simply applying a photomask with diffe

Joubert, Joanie January 2012 (has links)

Study of Conductance Quantization by Cross-Wire Junction

Zheng, Tao 05 1900 (has links)
The thesis studied quantized conductance in nanocontacts formed between two thin gold wires with one of the wires coated by alkainthiol self assembly monolayers (SAM), by using the cross-wire junction. Using the Lorenz force as the driving force, we can bring the two wires in contact in a controlled manner. We observed conductance with steps of 2e2 / h. The conductance plateaus last several seconds. The stability of the junction is attributed to the fact that the coating of SAM improves the stability and capability of the formed contact.

Sun Studio : Inspelningsteknik och sound / Sun Studio

Montén, Jacob January 2019 (has links)
