Honoré de Balzac e Camilo Castelo Branco: a crítica social oitocentista em perspectiva comparada / Honoré de Balzac and Camilo Castelo Branco: nineteenth-century social criticism in comparative perspective

Ana Luísa Patricio Campos de Oliveira Lenk Catelani 08 May 2013 (has links)
ABDALA Jr., 2003). / As we know, the reflections of the political and contractualist philosopher Jean- Jacques Rousseau became reference for many writers who succeeded him, mainly as concerns the considerations regarding the life in society, a vile ambience that degenerates man, a good and pious living being by nature. This is the renowned Rousseaunian concept of the noble savage, theory that can be found reverberated in many works of 19th century authors, among which we can highlight the one of the French novelist Honoré de Balzac and the one of the Portuguese fictionist Camilo Castelo Branco. That is because, from a comparative study realized between Balzacian and Camilian works, we hypothesized that these writers dialogue, as they construct their social criticisms, with the mentioned Rousseaus theory, although each one does it in his own way and ends by concatenating distinct literary worldviews, unique and innovative, that particularize, markedly, both of the fictional canons. Therefore, and taking into consideration the absence of critical studies regarding this, our intent is to analyze an unprecedented issue concerning the comparison between Balzacian and Camilian fiction: the different conception the narrators present about the social effects in man, through a dialogue established by both of them with the Rousseaunian concept of the noble savage. It is worth to stress that the comparative study proposed here will follow some basic assumptions of Comparative Literature, the main one being the research for the particularities of each literature. The reports on the work he developed with Victor as well as other documents are the basis of the present research which intends to discuss Itard s contributions to the relations among education, the learning process and the human being development in the constitution of man as a cultural and historical being. In the social historiographical perspective, the following study has sought for the articulation of three, however not mutually excluding, levels of analysis. Firstly, the inner level, which involves the concepts, method, practices, in short, the straight-related aspects to Itard s work; secondly, the methodological basis in which the elements above acquired a certain conformation; and finally the articulation between Itard s work and the Parisian society of the eighteenth century considering the relationships produced in that particular time and place as well as all the aspects that had them established. Itard was a man of his time who had an enormous scientific commitment and was conformed in the sensualist epistemological basis: his ideas as well as his experience were overwhelmed by social, political, economical and cultural influences which resulted from the reality they were in. His work had its beginning in a time when men started being the center of scientific investigations. He contributes with important thoughts about the classificatory criteria used as instruments that define the kind of relationship that we are supposed to establish with the ones who have been evaluated. Through his practice, Itard presents an alternative to segregation, having us think upon social, historical and cultural paths built and supported by Psychology, Medicine and Education for those who failed the patterns determined by that society / As intervenções realizadas no princípio do século XIX envolvendo o selvagem do Aveyron , denominado Victor, ficaram imortalizadas nas palavras do médico-pedagogo Jean Marc-Gaspard Itard.

Through the approach of their experiences, we try to stablish a link to the studies in Science of Religion, with a respective from the instituting instend of the institution. The field search and the interdiscplinar analysis are being the basis to offer clues to an understanding of this youth religious phenomenom. The challenge of locating it within the Brazilian Religious Field leads us to elaborate another necessary concept to describe it: neo-tribalism-pentecostal . The delimitation for the study are the thoughts on neopentecostalism as seen in Ricardo Mariano and neo-tribalism as seen in Michel Maffesoli. The experiences of the young ones are analysed through three references: conversion, aesthetics and religious experience; from the perspective of Rodney Stark, Edin Abumanssur and Luiz Felipe Pondé respectives. Considering this concept, ing offer an understandient key to the tribal characteristics of church as teenfagic and pledge of the emergengy of the savage sacred , and second to the thought of Roger Bastide acting as an orixá servant / O objeto de estudo deste trabalho são os jovens adeptos da Bola de Neve Church.

JS Mill and liberal imperialism: the architecture of a democratization theorem

Smith, Timothy Eric 06 September 2007 (has links)
This thesis is on John Stuart Mill’s imperialism. Mill’s classic text Considerations on Representative Government is framed as a treatise of a theorem for guiding “civilized” governors in imperially democratizing “non-civilized others” for the ends of historically moving humanity towards “civilizational progress.” This theorem is broken down into an architecture which consists of the first four chapters of Considerations and a conceptual architecture consisting of three notions: imperialism, democracy, and good governance. In outlining this theorem, gaps and shortcomings currently existing in the body of literature that engages Mill’s relationship with imperialism are identified. The theorem and the secondary literature are also used to problematize and argue against the call by some authors for a turn to Mill’s imperialism.

Fairweather, Erin Phyllis 31 August 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the depiction of the feral child through the literary study of 18th and 19th century French texts. This body of research isn’t meant to establish historical facts, or to construct a global history of childhood, but rather it’s a work on the representation of humanity, on the issues surrounding the conceptualizations of childhood and animality that emerged parallel to changes in theological and philosophical ideas or mentalities. Reflecting upon the cases of Marie-Angélique le Blanc, Victor de l’Aveyron, and Kaspar Hauser, and supporting narratives as well as on related anthologies of edifying anecdotes of wise, virtuous, obedient children, this study shows patterns of imagery and themes that confirm that the ways of viewing the child in literature and society is linked to path of thought regarding questions of humanity; stories filled with spiritual connotations fade as faith in science moves to the forefront of inquiry. / Graduate

The synthesis of this work is the resignification of the detective fiction in Roberto Bolaño's Los detectives salvajes. The starting point is the various texts of the author that have the figure of the detective in the entitlement, being this aspect only one of the many others that resort in bolañian work. Understanding that the huge network of relationships that exist in his texts is suggestive of his literary project, it will coherently be assumed a transtextual vision for analyzing the narrative: through Bolaño's critical texts, his general fiction and the history of the detective fiction, some interpretations shall be outlined for the perception of how new meanings of this genre can be attributed to Los detectives salvajes. To achieve this aim, it will be assumed a conjectural analysis, in a fragmentary level, and never totalizing / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

Victoria's Secret vs Savage x Fenty – Hur märkeskultur uttrycks genom semiotiska tecken på Instagram

Quach, Lena January 2020 (has links)
In this paper I examine excerpts from Victoria’s Secret’s and Savage x Fenty’s feeds on Instagram with the help of a semiotic analysis in order to see how they each represent women as a part of their marketing. The purpose is to investigate the difference between the two brand’s visual branding, and how it correlates to consumer’s personal branding. The result is then analysed with the help of selected theories regarding representation, gender, distinction, class and brand culture. In my conclusion I conclude that the two brands use similar signs that are coded differently to refer to femininity, and thus generates different messages. The two brands thus develop cultural characteristics that consumers can adopt as part of their personal branding.

Hoary-Headed Saints: the Aged in Nineteenth-Century Mormon Culture

Reeves, Brian D. 01 January 1987 (has links) (PDF)
This study paints a picture of prevalent attitudes toward the Mormon elderly in the nineteenth century. It identifies some characteristics of the aged population, and discusses feelings expressed by individual older persons about different aspects of their lives. It is a first step in gaining a greater understanding of how they fit into the larger pictures of old age and the Mormon Church in nineteenth century America.
