In this qualitative study, I examine the utilization of electronic publication and electronic writing systems to provide new possibilities for the translation of French Caribbean literary texts. Using Simone Schwarz‐Bart's 1972 novel Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle specifically for analysis and exploration, I investigate the potential of digital technology to aid in the production of literary translations that are mindful not only of the dynamics of language, but of French Caribbean women's discourse as well. Since the cultural turn of translation studies, translators need not only be bilingual but bicultural as well, having a discerning knowledge and familiarity of the culture that they render. Cultural translation scholars, therefore, have argued that translators should make the reasons for their translation choices known through annotations, prefaces, introductions, or footnotes. Advancing this established claim through critical and theoretical analysis and the construction of hypermediated textual translation samples from Pluie et Vent, I argue that translators can make their choices known by utilizing digital writing and hypermedia tools, such as TEI‐conformant XML, for computer assisted translation (CAT) and electronic publication. By moving a new translation of Schwarz‐Bart's text to a digital space, translators have more options in how they present their renderings including what information to include for better textual interpretation and analysis. The role, thus, of the translator has expanded. This person is not just a translator of language and culture, but an editor who provides scholarly information for critical interpretation. She is also a programmer who is skilled in new media iv writing and editing tools and uses those tools rhetorically to invent new methods for the electronic translation of literature.

Der GDSW-Vorkonditionierer ist ein zweistufiges überlappendes Schwarz-Gebietszerlegungsverfahren mit einem energieminimierenden Grobraum, dessen parallele Skalierbarkeit durch das direkt gelöste Grobproblem begrenzt ist. Zur Verbesserung der parallelen Skalierbarkeit wurde hier eine mehrstufige Erweiterung eingeführt. Für den Fall skalarer elliptischer Probleme wurde eine Konditionierungszahlschranke aufgestellt. Die parallele Implementierung wurde in das quelloffene ShyLU/FROSch Paket der Trilinos-Softwarebibliothek (http://trilinos.org) integriert und auf mehreren der leistungsstärksten Supercomputern der Welt (JUQUEEN, Forschungszentrum Jülich; SuperMUC-NG, LRZ Garching; Theta, Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, Argonne National Laboratory, USA) für Modellprobleme (Laplace und lineare Elastizität) getestet. Das angestrebte Ziel einer verbesserten parallelen Skalierbarkeit wurde erreicht, der Bereich der Skalierbarkeit wurde um mehr als eine Größenordnung erweitert. Die größten Rechnungen verwendeten mehr als 200000 Prozessorkerne des Theta Supercomputers. Zudem wurde die Anwendung des GDSW-Vorkonditionierers auf ein vollständig gekoppeltes nichtlineare Deformations-Diffusions Problem in der Chemomechanik betrachtet.

Les équations de Maxwell en régime harmonique comportent plusieurs difficultés lorsque la fréquence est élevée. On peut notamment citer le fait que leur formulation variationnelle n’est pas définie positive et l’effet de pollution qui oblige à utiliser des maillages très fins, ce qui rend problématique la construction de solveurs itératifs. Nous proposons une stratégie de solution précise et rapide, qui associe une discrétisation par des éléments finis d’ordre élevé à des préconditionneurs de type décomposition de domaine. La conception, l’implémentation et l’analyse des deux méthodes sont assez difficiles pour les équations de Maxwell. Les éléments finis adaptés à l’approximation du champ électrique sont les éléments finis H(rot)-conformes ou d’arête. Ici nous revisitons les degrés de liberté classiques définis par Nédélec, afin d’obtenir une expression plus pratique par rapport aux fonctions de base d’ordre élevé choisies. De plus, nous proposons une technique pour restaurer la dualité entre les fonctions de base et les degrés de liberté. Nous décrivons explicitement une stratégie d’implémentation qui a été appliquée dans le langage open source FreeFem++. Ensuite, nous nous concentrons sur les techniques de préconditionnement du système linéaire résultant de la discrétisation par éléments finis. Nous commençons par la validation numérique d’un préconditionneur à un niveau, de type Schwarz avec recouvrement, avec des conditions de transmission d’impédance entre les sous-domaines. Enfin, nous étudions comment des préconditionneurs à deux niveaux, analysés récemment pour l’équation de Helmholtz, se comportent pour les équations de Maxwell, des points de vue théorique et numérique. Nous appliquons ces méthodes à un problème à grande échelle qui découle de la modélisation d’un système d’imagerie micro-onde, pour la détection et le suivi des accidents vasculaires cérébraux. La précision et la vitesse de calcul sont essentielles dans cette application. / The time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations present several difficulties when the frequency is large, such as the sign-indefiniteness of the variational formulation, the pollution effect and the problematic construction of iterative solvers. We propose a precise and efficient solution strategy that couples high order finite element (FE) discretizations with domain decomposition (DD) preconditioners. High order FE methods make it possible for a given precision to reduce significantly the number of unknowns of the linear system to be solved. DD methods are then used as preconditioners for the iterative solver: the problem defined on the global domain is decomposed into smaller problems on subdomains, which can be solved concurrently and using robust direct solvers. The design, implementation and analysis of both these methods are particularly challenging for Maxwell’s equations. FEs suited for the approximation of the electric field are the curl-conforming or edge finite elements. Here, we revisit the classical degrees of freedom (dofs) defined by Nédélec to obtain a new more friendly expression in terms of the chosen high order basis functions. Moreover, we propose a general technique to restore duality between dofs and basis functions. We explicitly describe an implementation strategy, which we embedded in the open source language FreeFem++. Then we focus on the preconditioning of the linear system, starting with a numerical validation of a one-level overlapping Schwarz preconditioner, with impedance transmission conditions between subdomains. Finally, we investigate how two-level preconditioners recently analyzed for the Helmholtz equation work in the Maxwell case, both from the theoretical and numerical points of view. We apply these methods to the large scale problem arising from the modeling of a microwave imaging system, for the detection and monitoring of brain strokes. In this application accuracy and computing speed are indeed of paramount importance.

La résolution de très grands systèmes linéaires creux est une composante de base algorithmique fondamentale dans de nombreuses applications scientifiques en calcul intensif. La résolution per- formante de ces systèmes passe par la conception, le développement et l'utilisation d'algorithmes parallèles performants. Dans nos travaux, nous nous intéressons au développement et l'évaluation d'une méthode hybride (directe/itérative) basée sur des techniques de décomposition de domaine sans recouvrement. La stratégie de développement est axée sur l'utilisation des machines mas- sivement parallèles à plusieurs milliers de processeurs. L'étude systématique de l'extensibilité et l'efficacité parallèle de différents préconditionneurs algébriques est réalisée aussi bien d'un point de vue informatique que numérique. Nous avons comparé leurs performances sur des systèmes de plusieurs millions ou dizaines de millions d'inconnues pour des problèmes réels 3D .

In dem Beitrag wird Kritik an die Gauguin-Ausstellung an der Alten Nationalgalerie Berlin, die von einer heftigen Hypernervosität/Hyperverstörung erfasst ist und an eine ideologische und voreingenommene Beschäftigung mit der Darstellenden Kunst (aber auch mit Literatur, Theater, Ballett usw.) und wo Theorien und Begriffe wie Kolonialismus, Dekolonisierung, Postkolonialismus, Dekonstruktion und Multiperspektivismus zu modischen Schlagwörtern verkommen. Die Texte strotzen von kulturtheoretischer Unwissenheit und Halbverdautem. Diese tragen mit einem Bombardement teilweise irreführender Texte zu Desinformation, Exotisierung und Stereotypisierung von Gauguins Werken bei, indem sie undifferenziert und naiv-idealisierend die Welt in Schwarz-Weiß einteilen: Hier die bösen Europäer, dort die guten Indigenen, und an ihrer Seite die guten aufgeklärten und moralisch tadellosen neuen Menschen Europas, die neuen Gralshüter:innen von Moral und Kunst des 21. Jahrhunderts. / The article is critical of the Gauguin exhibition at the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, which is gripped by a vehement hypernervousness/hyperdisturbance, and of an ideological and biased preoccupation with the performing arts (but also with literature, theatre, ballet, etc.) and of the use of theories and concepts such as colonialism, decolonisation, postcolonialism, deconstruction and multiperspectivism in fashionable buzzwords. The texts bristle with cultural-theoretical ignorance and half-digestedness. They contribute to the disinformation, exoticisation and stereotyping of Gauguin's works with a bombardment of partly misleading texts by undifferentiatedly and naively idealisingly dividing the world into black and white: Here the bad Europeans, there the good indigenous people, and alongside them the good enlightened and morally impeccable new people of Europe, the new guardians of the Grail of morality and art in the 21st century. / El artículo critica la exposición de Gauguin en la Alte Nationalgalerie de Berlín, que está embarcada en una fuerte hipernerviosidad/hiperperperperturbación, así como en una preocupación ideológicamente sesgada por las artes escénicas (pero también por la literatura, el teatro, el ballet, etc.) y en el uso de teorías y conceptos como colonialismo, deco-lonización, postcolonialismo, deconstrucción y multiperspectivismo en términos de moda. En los textos abunda la ignorancia cultural y teórica, semidigeridos. Contribuyen a la desinformación, exotización y estereotipación de la obra de Gauguin mediante un bombardeo de textos parcialmente erróneos, al dividir el mundo en blanco y negro de forma indiferenciada e ingenuamente idealizadora: Aquí los malos europeos, allí los buenos nativos, y junto a ellos los buenos nuevos pueblos ilustrados y moralmente irreprochables de Europa, los nuevos guardianes del Grial de la moral y el arte en el siglo XXI.
