Young and Midlife Single (or Recently Single) Heterosexual North American Adults’ Typical First Date Scripts and Their Retrospective Perceptions of Their First Date Experiences

Midlife adults who have divorced or never married represent a growing demographic in North America. Despite this fact, little research has examined the dating and sexual behaviours of these individuals. Research has instead focused on the dating and sexual lives of young adults, particularly undergraduate students. The current research program examined young (aged 18-24 years) and midlife (aged 35-54 years) single (or recently single) heterosexual North American adults’ typical first date scripts and their retrospective perceptions of their first date experiences. More specifically, Study 1 examined young and midlife adults’ typical first date scripts. Participants were asked to list at least 20 actions that a woman would typically perform on a first date with someone new, from the beginning of the date to its end, putting the actions in the order in which they would occur. Participants were then instructed to carry out the task a second time, focusing on the actions that a man would typically perform on a first date with someone new. Study 2 examined young and midlife adults’ retrospective accounts of their actual first date scripts, as well as their actual first date sexual behaviour. Participants were asked to list at least 20 actions that they performed on their most recent first date, from the beginning of the date to its end, putting them in the order in which they occurred. They were also asked to complete a revised Guttman scale of sexual behaviours, checking off from a list the behaviours that occurred on their most recent first date. Across both studies, analyses revealed three key patterns with respect to gender roles. First, contrary to expectations, young adults tended to be more traditional than midlife adults with respect to first dates. Second, midlife adult women tended to be less traditional than expected with respect to first dates. Lastly, in keeping with expectations, women were depicted as taking a passive role and men were depicted as taking a more active role in the scripts. Implications of the findings and recommendations for future research follow.

Esta pesquisa é parte dos estudos desenvolvidos pelo grupo de pesquisa LIGUE – Linguagem, Línguas, Educação e Escola, e com ela pretende-se compreender como o material didático, elaborado sob a perspectiva da Teoria da Atividade Sócio-Histórico-Cultural – TASHC, pode contribuir para um processo de ensino-aprendizagem numa perspectiva transformadora do indivíduo para uma participação cidadã numa Mostra Cultural. É importante também entender a contribuição da organização argumentativa (LEITÃO, 2011) no gênero proposto para a construção e expansão do conhecimento em língua inglesa. Este estudo se insere na área da Linguística Aplicada pelo seu caráter transdisciplinar e por contar com o espaço escolar para coleta e análise dos dados. Está embasado na concepção dialógica da linguagem (BAKHTIN, 2002), e construído como uma pesquisa Crítica de Colaboração (MAGALHÃES, 2007), contando com o trabalho coletivo para a construção de conhecimento. O corpus analisado trata do material didático produzido pela professora-pesquisadora, e dos scripts produzidos pelos alunos. A discussão dos dados teve como base conceitos fundamentais da TASHC, e contou com as categorias de análise propostas por Liberali (2009). Os resultados mostram a importância de se propor um trabalho com LE tendo como foco atividades sociais das quais os alunos já participam ou participarão, e com isso poderem refletir e se reposicionar socialmente. / This study intends to show how the teaching and learning process happens based on social activities (ENGESTRÖN, 1999), considering the work with the enunciative, discursive and linguistic aspects (LIBERALI, 2009) that involve the focused social activity. So, in this research it is proposed a work with the social activity documentary script writing to the participation in a Cultural Fair that happens yearly in Colégio da Polícia Militar de Pernambuco. This research is part of the studies which are developed by the research group LIGUE – Linguagem, Língua, Educação e Escola, and with this research I intend to understand how the courseware produced under Historical-Social and Cultural Activity Theory (TASHC) perspective can contribute to the teaching and learning process in a personal transformation perspective to a citizen participation in a Cultural Fair. It is also important to understand the contribution of the argumentative organization (LEITÃO, 2011) in the focused textual genre to the production and expansion of English Language knowledge. This study is part of Applied Linguistics area because of its transdisciplinary perspective and because of its place of data analysis – the school. It is based on the dialogic conception of language (BAKHTIN, 2002), and produced as a Critical Collaborative research (MAGALHÃES, 2007), composed by a collective work for the construction of knowledge. The analyzed corpus is the courseware, produced by the teacher-researcher, and the documentaries scripts, produced by the students. The data analysis is based on the fundamental concepts of TASHC, and used the analysis categories proposed by Liberali (2009). The results show the importance of a work with a foreign language based on social activities, in which students already participate or will, and then they can think about it to change their social position.

This report describes the development of an application in collaboration with Designingenjörerna AB. The company has worked for a long time with a community platform and they required an application where users can create their own unique profile representations, called Avatar Creator. An Avatar Creator is computer based application, which makes it possible to create a virtual character. The problem area behind this is that, large websites require a lot of administrative work when people upload profile pictures on different community pages. They can contain abusive material or pictures of other people rather than those who created the profile.The questions in this report are, how can an Avatar Creator help user to get a unique profile of himself? What are the advantages and disadvantages of an Avatar Creator? How to create a user-friendly application?To understand how an Avatar Creator works and get ideas to create an application, exiting Avatar Creators were reviewed on the Web.Collaborative work with Designingenjörerna AB was done to pin down the requirements for the Avatar creator application. The requirements were implemented to come up with an application with the features that allows users to create their unique Avatar profile, change looks etc. With this kind of application, the content that the users can choose is limited and controlled. On other hand, if users are allowed to change Avatar appearance too much, it can lead to disturbing images.The usability of the application was evaluated through survey which concluded that further work is needed to make the application user friendly. Users pointed out some functions were hard to understand and help-instructions were missing. Apart from these points, the application was considered good and held up to its purpose of creating a unique Avatar profile easily.

Scriptans osynliga arbete : En kvalitativ studie om scriptors syn på scriptayrket i svensk filmoch tv-produktion

Uppsatsens syfte är att genom en kvalitativ undersökning belysa scriptayrket. Fyrascriptor har deltagit i djupintervjuer där de med egna ord beskrivit sitt arbete. De områdensom diskuterats är hur de blev scriptor, scriptans arbetsuppgifter, hur samarbetet ser ut medkollegor i filmteamet, egenskaper som är viktiga att ha som scripta, att det finns en okunskapom yrket samt bristen på en naturlig väg in i yrket. Detta kombineras med en teoretisk delsom belyser scriptan historiskt samt ur ett genusperspektiv. Det studien kommit fram till äratt det finns en historisk bakgrund som lett till att scriptan som yrke har haft fler kvinnliga änmanliga utövare. Genus har dock inte påverkat de intervjuade scriptorna när de valt sitt yrke.Scriptorna beskriver i intervjuerna en stor okunskap om deras yrke, mycket av det beror på attdet saknas utbildningar och litteratur om yrket. Till skillnad från andra yrken inom film ärscriptans yrke inte kopplat till kreativt arbete eller teknik, det är en av anledningarna tillokunskapen kring yrket. Det finns idag ingen naturlig väg för att bli scripta, något som ärunikt när det kommer till yrken inom filmindustrin. Likväl är scriptan den enda positionen påen filminspelning utan en egen assistent. En scripta-assistent skulle kunna vara en naturligväg för personer med intresse för yrket att arbeta sig uppåt. Dock håller inte alla intervjuadescriptor med om behovet av en scripta-assistent, men med en ökande produktionstakt kan detbehovet förändras.

Pornografi är ett omdebatterat fenomen och har främst förknippats med mäns konsumtion. Föreliggande studie syftade till att undersöka vilken mening pornografi har för kvinnor som regelbundet använder pornografi. En kvalitativ intervjuundersökning utfördes med sju unga kvinnor mellan 20–30 år. Empirin analyserades tematiskt utifrån teorin om sexuella script och begreppen intimitetstrubbel samt sexuell empowerment. Resultatet fann att pornografi har betydelse för kvinnors sexualitet. Pornografi hjälper dem att utforska kropp, upphetsning, sexuella preferenser och sexuell identitet. Pornografi ger kunskap och inspiration och betraktas som ett sätt att äga sin sexualitet. Men pornografi ger även upphov till ambivalens, särskilt kopplat till kulturella scenarier kring pornografi som skadligt och synen på pornografi som kvinnoförtryck. Detta påverkar informanternas intrapsykiska script genom hur de använder och relaterar till pornografi. Trots detta har kvinnorna aktiva strategier för att söka upp den pornografi de finner upphetsande. / Pornography is a well-debated phenomenon and is often treated as a male issue. The present study aimed to move beyond this view and investigate the possible meaning of pornography for young women. Seven young women who consumed pornography regularly were interviewed using a qualitative method. The empirics was analyzed thematically using sexual scripting theory and the concepts of intimate trouble and sexual empowerment. The result showed that pornography bears meaning for young women’s sexuality. Using pornography, they explore their sexuality, sexual identities and their preferences. Pornography is seen as a means for owning one’s sexuality. At the same time, pornography is a source of ambivalence. Cultural scenarios treating pornography as a danger and as misogynic oppression affect the women’s intrapsychic scripting and therefore the way they relate to pornography. Still, the women are seen as having developed active strategies to handle this kind of intimate trouble and find the kind of pornography they find exciting.
