The objective of this research was to establish what the influence of gestalt group playtherapy on the self-esteem of primary schoolgirls in a children’s home would be. The goals of the research were to build a knowledge basis by means of a literature study and consultation with experts in the field. The aim of this knowledge basis was the needs and developmental characteristics of the middle childhood years, the characteristics and problems encountered by the children’s home child, to assess by means of an empirical study what the influence of gestalt group playtherapy on the self-esteem of the child in the middle childhood years in a children’s home would be and the nature and scope of gestalt therapy. The study also had the further aim to make recommendations for the use and appropriate application of social workers working in the field of children’s welfare, especially the children’s home. For the empirical study the dominant-less-dominant model was used. The dominant data collection measure that was used, was of the quantitative kind with a small component of qualitative study to support the last mentioned quantitative investigation. Six respondents were identified and engaged in eight group playtherapeutic sessions. Applied research was used as the researcher aimed to find a solution for the problem of low self-esteem in specific children, namely the primary school child in the children’s home. The research resorted under the sub-category of intervention-knowledge-development. This type of research focuses on the practical application of research. The research design that researcher utilized, was the quasi-experimental design where one group pretest-posttest was being used. This design is useful to assess how an independent variable would influence a specific group. The data collection methods used were questionnaires, unstructured observation and the study of respondent’s case records. Empirical data results indicated the following: - the child in a children’s home has weak self-esteem; - the child in a children’s home has problems binding with the peer group; - respondents could already identify and regulate emotions in themselves and understand that emotions are not always correctly observed and interpreted in others; - respondent were very negative towards the children’s home and their committal to the home; - gestalt group playtherapy has a significant influence on the self-esteem of the above mentioned child. This research project focused on the influence of animal-assisted play therapy on the self-esteem of adolescents with special needs. The goal of this study was to ascertain whether principles of animal-assisted play therapy from the gestalt approach would enhance the self-esteem of adolescents with special needs. In order to achieve this goal, the following objectives were set out: to create a theoretical knowledge base through a literature study and consultation with experts, to conduct an empirical study in order to obtain qualitative and quantitative data and to formulate conclusions and recommendations with regard to the use of animal-assisted play therapy with adolescents with special needs. A combination of the quantitative and qualitative approaches was utilized, and applied research was done, as the focus was on practical solutions that is suitable for practice. A research hypothesis was posed, namely: If animal-assisted therapy from the gestalt approach is used with adolescents with special needs, their self-esteem will be enhanced. Two adolescents were selected as respondents through purposive sampling as sub-type of non-probability sampling. An empirical study was conducted through the use of questionnaires and interviewing as data-collection methods. The quantitative data was gathered through the use of self-constructed questionnaires and the Psychosocial Functioning Inventory for High School Children (PFI – HIGH – C) from Perspective College. The researcher utilized the A-B-A research design to conduct a pre-test and a post-test. Qualitative data was gathered through interviewing using the combined animal-assisted and gestalt play therapy techniques Empirical data was gathered and indicated improvement in the self-esteem of both the respondents who were exposed to the play therapy techniques. The research has thus shown that the use of animal-assisted play therapy does enhance the self-esteem of adolescents with special needs, and has benefits for future practice. The goal of the research is to determine if the Gestalt groupworkprogram have a influence on the self-image and general satisfaction of the awaiting-trail adolescent.
To reach the above goal the researcher used applied research. Standardised measure-instruments as well as observation was used. Gestaltgroupwork can be implemented with great success in residential institutions like secure care facilities for children. / In hierdie studie is Gestalttegnieke binne 'n groepwerkprogram benut as intervensie, om
die verhoorafwagtende jeugdige in aanhouding weer in kontak te bring met homself en
om sy bewustheidskontinuum te vergroot. Die doel van die navorsing was om te bepaal
of die Gestaltgroepwerkprogram 'n invloed sal he op die selfbeeld en algemene
tevredenheid van die verhoorafwagtende adolessent.
Om bogenoemde te bereik het die navorser toegepaste navorsing onderneem en het van
sowel waarneming as gestandaardiseerde meetinstrumente gebruik gemaak. Die
teoretiese onderbou van die behandelingsprogram wat gebruik is spruit uit die

of learners in historically coloured schools.
An eclectic approach was followed because theoretical views on motivation could
not furnish a comprehensive theory. The definition emerging from this approach
states that motivation is a process started within a person to create a state of need
for satisfaction and happiness that can be reached by instigating and sustaining
goal-directed activity. The link between learning and motivation, as well as related
factors, was ascertained. Determinants of high and low levels of learning motivation
were established. Programmes aimed at higher motivation levels were explored.
Empirically it was proven that grade 9 learners in historically coloured schools
leaned more towards an extrinsic orientation; grade 12's more intrinsic. An

uit die projeksiemedia verkry is, is gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings gemaak. Daar is

actualization of the learner in primary school who bullies others. To achieve this goal,
specific objectives were set.
The development of the learner in middle childhood was examined by means of a
literature investigation. Furthermore, the concept of bullying was investigated, thus
creating a psychological image of the learner who bullies others.
Projection media were used in three case studies to obtain empirical information
regarding the objective of the research. Themes from the projection media were
identified and verified against the existing literature. During the discussion of the
information acquired from the projection media, conclusions and recommendations
were made. An attempt was made not to generalize the findings, because this was a
