Knowledge of HIV status causes changes in emotional settings and it aimed to comprise the meanings of affective-sexual relationships and marital relationship of people who lives with HIV/Aids and how is the process of self-care from the perspective of socio-historical psychology. Our employment was made with a database built from a data already collected between 2006 - 2007 and 2010 - 2012, consisting of 85 participants who had responded the 14 selected questions for the sample. The analysis of the data was performed from the elaboration of meanings cores and to deepen the qualitative analysis was realized one Hierarchical Analysis similarity generating clusters and used the testimonies of the people to illustrate the meanings of affective-sexual relationships and the influence of this relations in the promotion of self-care. The results obtained four clusters, two female and two male. The Cluster1 (women and men) is characterized by being made up of married couples, older, less scholarity and are in a stable relationship a longer time. These people tend reproduce the hegemonic standard of the feminine and masculine. The Cluster 2 (women and men) is characterized by being made up of younger people with a higher level of education, compared with Clusters1 and people who are in a shorter stable relationship or not in a stable relationship. These people have an idealization of romantic relationship, which is what they would like to construct, but at the same time have a better understanding of the real life and are more integrated psychologically. The results show that participants in this sample tend to reproduce the hegemonic pattern of affective-sexual relationships, often uncritically. On the other hand some participants can create new meanings to their relations and thereby build greater self awareness, changing some behaviors and having a better quality in their relationships, which may be a factor promoting self-care / A vivência com o vírus do HIV e com a Aids tem tido novas configurações ao longo da história da epidemia, principalmente quanto as relações afetivas sexuais dessas pessoas. Essas pessoas tendem a reproduzir o papel hegemônico esperado do feminino e do masculino.

The Transitioning Couple: Sexual Relationship and Sexual Orientation Experiences of Transgender Men and their Cisgender Female Partners

Pugliese, Meghan E. 06 June 2013 (has links)
Sex is a biologically based classification, determining whether an individual is male or female. Comparatively, gender is a socially designed construct, which varies between cultures and prescribes what it means to be a man or a woman. Western culture suggests all individuals fall neatly into one of these two groups. Females are expected to display feminine characteristics such as being nurturers, while males are expected to display masculine characteristics such as being providers. There exists, however, a population of individuals who identify themselves as "transgender," meaning, they feel inconsistency between their internal sense of gender identity and their birth-assigned biological sex and/or assigned gender role. These individuals wish to separate from their birth-assigned gender role and express through physical modification their true gender identity. In the context of romantic relationships, it was once thought that disclosure of one partner's transgender identity meant inevitable demise of the relationship. Clinical guidelines offered advice to the transgender partner, suggesting they abandon their family, change their identity, and begin a new life elsewhere (Lev, 2004). More recently, however, clinical experiences suggest the possibility that many transgender people can maintain healthy and sustainable relationships. This study sought to understand the impact of gender transition on the sexual relationship and sexual orientation of female-to-male (FTM) transgender individuals and their cisgender female partners. / Master of Science

A review of intimate heterosexual relationship research in South Africa

Conradie, Joelene 04 1900 (has links)
Digitized using a Konica Minolta 211 PCL Scanner. 300dpi (OCR). / Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Intimate heterosexual relationships play a vital role in shaping the lives of many people, and have therefore become an important topic of research within psychology. The South African population is also currently faced with many prevalent psychosocial problems, such as HIV/Aids, rape, violence against women and divorce, which need to be contextualised within the context of intimate heterosexual relationships. Research on intimate heterosexual relationships has therefore become a priority. In order to determine directions and priorities for such research, the objective of this assignment was to provide a review of selected international and South African research on intimate heterosexual relationships. This review focused on: the definition and operationalisation of intimate heterosexual relationships; the salient theoretical frameworks used; the characteristics of participants; as well as the methodologies employed by relationship researchers. The review highlighted the following: A variety of terms is used by relationship researchers to conceptualise intimate heterosexual relationships which makes it difficult to integrate intimate heterosexual relationship research. Although theoretical frameworks like the social learning theory, cognitive behavioural theory and some metatheoretical perspectives such as postmodernism, feminism and social constructivism are utiiised, South African relationship researchers mostly have an atheoretical approach to research. A review of the research participants revealed that most participants in South African relationship studies are married adults. While the male-female ratio of the participants was balanced, the diversity of the South African population was not well represented in these studies. Researchers mostly used qualitative research strategies and employed the survey method of data gathering. Based on these findings, it was recommended that relationship researchers should recognise the need to clarify the relationship concepts used in their studies; attempt to incorporate better-known relationship theories; ensure that the South African population is well represented; and to combine qualitative research strategies with quantitative research strategies.

Sexual Relationships between Athletes and Coaches : Love, Sexual Consent, and Abuse

Johansson, Susanne January 2017 (has links)
Coach-athlete sexual relationships (CASR) and sexual harassment and abuse (SHA) in sport can profoundly impact athletes’ welfare and performance. Yet, it is often ignored due to sensitivity, secrecy, and lack of knowledge. There is no previous research on SHA in sport in Sweden, and legal, consensual, same-sex CASR is under-researched. The overall purpose of this doctoral thesis is to examine CASR in competitive sport in Sweden. More specifically: a) athletes’ experiences of CASR; b) prevalence of SHA in coach-athlete relationships; c) conceptual and theoretical issues to broaden the understanding of CASR and SHA, will be examined. Survey methodology is employed in Article I to explore the prevalence of SHA, coach-athlete relationship factors, and association between relationship factors and SHA. A random sample of current and former male and female Swedish athletes (n=477) aged 25 participated. Article II outlines critical issues of CASR, and theories and conceptualisations of romantic love, sexual consent, and female athlete sexual agency is further developed in the thesis research summary. Drawing on interviews with five female elite athletes aged 23-30, experiences of CASR are analysed in-depth using discourse analyses in Article III and narrative case study design in Article IV. Results show that athletes’ experiences of CASR are positively and negatively diverse but potentially problematic because boundary ambiguity, secrecy, and isolation are common. Social and ethical dilemmas may also occur because CASR intersect contrasting discourses regarding elite sport, coach–athlete relationships, and romantic love. Moreover, CASR integrate professional and private contexts in which equality and power deviate. The research illustrates empirically and theoretically how female elite athletes exercise agency and recognise consensual, mutually desired CASR where romantic love is priority. However, sexual consent can be ambivalent rather than a mutually exclusive yes/no dualism. Socially, consent is a process of negotiation informed by contextual factors, sexual agency, and social structure. In addition, 5.5% prevalence of SHA perpetrated by male coaches is reported, distributed throughout the sampled athletes’ gender, age, sport performance levels, and individual/team sports in the sample. In conclusion, this thesis expands knowledge of athletes’ experiences of love, sexual consent, and abuse in CASR. Previous evidence of SHA in sport is confirmed to include sport in Sweden. Implications for sport and sport sciences are offered.

Bredahl, Ulrika, Koch, Tina January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: Historically, much has changed in female sexuality, women have gone from not having any rights at all to in the 1900s getting more and more rights. The brain are important for sexual desire and many factors affect a woman´s desire. Influencing factors on women's desire and intimate sexual relationship after they have given birth include physical, psychological and hormonal. The aim of the study was to describe women's experience of sexual desire and intimate sexual relationship after she has given birth to her first child. The authors have interviewed nine women about their experience of sexual desire and intimate sexual relationship when the child was 9-18 months old, when the woman is believed to have achieved a sense of security in her parental role. A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used in the analysis and interpretation of the interviews in order to find the essence and get a result. The change it means to be a mother leads to a decrease in sexual desire for most women. This in turn affected the intimate sexual relationship with the partner which decreased in frequency. A prominent factor influencing desire and intimate sexual relationship were fatigue, which made sleep a priority. The women also felt distracted by the child's presence during intercourse and that breastfeeding meant that the breasts purpose changed. Most women felt that motherhood after all brought positive changes for themselves, how they viewed their body and that they received a new confidence. A decrease in sexual desire or a decreased frequency of the intimate sexual relationship during a period of life does not mean that the woman experienced decreased sexual health. The women would have preferred a more direct communication with the midwife around sexual health. It is thus very important that midwives improve their level of knowledge about female sexual health. / Program: Barnmorskeutbildning

Effects of relationship context and social factors on women's solo masturbaton and vibrator use

Sherrow, Ashley Reneé 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Little existing research has examined women’s solo masturbation and vibrator usage in a way that highlights the importance of both sexual agency and the sexual/romantic relationship context. This research evaluates if and how social factors, partnership status and the relationship context, and sexual self-concept impact a woman’s behaviors and attitudes toward masturbation and vibrator use. Using cross-sectional survey data from adult women (N=112), descriptive and bivariate analyses were used to explore a variety of factors. Single and partnered women did not differ significantly on a majority of measures, suggesting that partnership status may play an insignificant role in predicting women’s solo sex attitudes and behaviors. Regarding the relationship context, partner communication and positivity toward masturbation and vibrator use significantly varied together. Finally, greater sexual openness and sexual entitlement were associated with higher masturbation frequency. Results from this study suggest that masturbation and vibrator use are common among adult women, and women are capable of sexual agency in relation to masturbation and vibrator use, whether they are in established partnerships or not.

Nicholls, Dorothée 12 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis concern impurity in Greek religion and more specifically the miasma related to the intimate life. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive portrait of intimate life through the analysis of religious inscriptions and literary documents. The examination of these sources allow the identification of the modalities for entering the temple and the processes necessary to regain its state of purity. This first objective leads to a second: I aim to formulate an explanatory theory on the origin of impurity in ancient Greece that departs from the traditional and interpretative theories by taking into account the contribution of cognitive science and social psychology to this question. Divided into four chapters, the research first focuses on the impurity of menstruation, a deeply intimate event and little studied due to persistent modern taboos. The second chapter dwells on the impurity of sexual relations. More specifically, this second section analyzes the differences between the miasma caused by relationships between spouses and by extramarital relationships. The third chapter deals with events related to motherhood, namely childbirth, abortion, miscarriage and breastfeeding. The juxtaposition of several types of impurity allow the identification of certain trends or similarities. Finally, the fourth chapter consists of the exploration of the biological and cognitive theories that could explain the origin of impurity in Ancient Greece. This final chapter seek to conclude that impurity is partly due to cognitive processes and reflexes which have been socially reinforced by the Greek religion.

Barnard, Hendrik Johannes Jacobus 03 April 2014 (has links)
Borskanker is ‘n lewensbedreigde siekte waarop geen man voorberei is nie. / A practical theological problem was identified in the ministry: a husband whose wife undergoes a mastectomy does not receive pastoral care. This scientific research enriches the practical theology in an unique way so that the pastoral counsellor is supported and can be more competent. Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease that no husband is prepared for. The wife loses an intimate part of her body and needs to be supported by her husband. He starts to question his own manhood (identity). This loss is also a traumatic experiences for him. He is overwhelmed by his emotions and can fall into despair if he does not have the ability to process the problem. We live in the post-modern era. This has lead to the development of the Post-foundational practical theological approach. The researcher therefore decided to follow this approach in his study. This help to determine the influence of the disruption and uncertainties in the life of the man through a discourse between the practical theology, medical- and human science from a transversal perspective. Evident questions were raised for which the counsellor needs to distinguish himself with knowledge about the various pastoral approaches and techniques, appropriate knowledge of the Bible, medical- and human science. The circumstances in which the man finds himself raise questions about the meaning of his spirituality. Spirituality can be of great help for the husband. The aim of this counseling model is to facilitate the husband through the narrative approach to find the meaning of his true identity in Christ. Through the grace of God the husband becomes spiritually mature. The dependence on God through a process of transcendence changes the ‘question identity’ to an ‘identity of value and hope’. Through the work of Holy Spirit the husband is reassured of the fulfillment of the promises of salvation by God. The aim of this counseling model for the practical theology is a spiritually matured husband with a new future story. / Practical Theology / D. Th. (Practical Theology)
