The increasing in world population, with higher proportion of elderly, leads to
an increase in the number of individuals with vision loss and cataracts are one of the
leading causes of blindness worldwide. Cataract is an eye disease that is the partial or
total opacity of the crystalline lens (natural lens of the eye) or its capsule. It can be
triggered by several factors such as trauma, age, diabetes mellitus, and medications,
among others. It is known that the attendance by ophthalmologists in rural and poor
areas in Brazil is less than needed and many patients with treatable diseases such as
cataracts are undiagnosed and therefore untreated. In this context, this project presents
the development of OPTICA, a system of teleophthalmology using smartphones for
ophthalmic emergencies detection, providing a diagnostic aid for cataract using
specialists systems and image processing techniques. The images are captured by a
cellphone camera and along with a questionnaire filled with patient information are
transmitted securely via the platform Mobile SANA to a online server that has an
intelligent system available to assist in the diagnosis of cataract and provides
ophthalmologists who analyze the information and write back the patient?s report.
Thus, the OPTICA provides eye care to the poorest and least favored population,
improving the screening of critically ill patients and increasing access to diagnosis and
treatment.

Identity Authentication and Near Field Device Authentication for Smart DevicesJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: The widespread adoption of mobile devices gives rise to new opportunities and challenges for authentication mechanisms. Many traditional authentication mechanisms become unsuitable for smart devices. For example, while password is widely used on computers as user identity authentication, inputting password on small smartphone screen is error-prone and not convenient. In the meantime, there are emerging demands for new types of authentication. Proximity authentication is an example, which is not needed for computers but quite necessary for smart devices. These challenges motivate me to study and develop novel authentication mechanisms specific for smart devices.
In this dissertation, I am interested in the special authentication demands of smart devices and about to satisfy the demands. First, I study how the features of smart devices affect user identity authentications. For identity authentication domain, I aim to design a continuous, forge-resistant authentication mechanism that does not interrupt user-device interactions. I propose a mechanism that authenticates user identity based on the user's finger movement patterns. Next, I study a smart-device-specific authentication, proximity authentication, which authenticates whether two devices are in close proximity. For prox- imity authentication domain, I aim to design a user-friendly authentication mechanism that can defend against relay attacks. In addition, I restrict the authenticated distance to the scale of near field, i.e., a few centimeters. My first design utilizes a user's coherent two-finger movement on smart device screen to restrict the distance. To achieve a fully-automated system, I explore acoustic communications and propose a novel near field authentication system. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2014

Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa e à Inovação Tecnológica do Estado de Sergipe - FAPITEC/SE / How do Sergipe's youth access journalistic content through smartphones? That is the first
question of this essay. To answer it, the chosen scenario for the research was a state school,
located in Aracaju, State of Sergipe, where the observation and interviewing process were
made with ten high school senior students. The goal was to find out if those digital natives –
people who have grown up submerged in digital culture, following up the emergence and
development of technologies – are actual journalistic content readers or merely users inserted
in the cyberspace. In other words, if those young people are just surfing through content
without taking any action or reflecting about it, or if they have a more comprehensive reading,
reflecting about what they read, considering the new digital environments created from
mobile comunication platforms, in particular the production and flowing of journalistic
content in smartphones. Six hypotheses were brought up in the research: 1) Schools offer a
favorable environment for using mobile comunication technology – smartphones – for
educational and informative purposes; 2) Young people have smartphones as their main
source of information, with less use of other tecnologies and media types; 3) Young people
don't immerse nor look for new information about what they read daily; 4) The new
technologies made possible for the young to take part, create new content and be more critical
about what they access; 5) Young people in digital environment are cautious and do not give
credibility to every content spread on the internet; 6) School environment has influence and
motivates the young to obtain journalystic information. In the course of the research, other
questions were made, such as 'what' young people absorbe in the journalistic sphere while
using smartphones and 'why' they choose it. For that, the method of approach chosen was the
inductive one and the procedure method was the observation of ethnographic inspiration, in
order to allow a more in - depth look at the studied object. An observation work of
ethnographic inspiration, aiming to make an in-depth look about the study subject possible.
The chosen techniques for the data collection were the non-participant direct observation and
in-depth semi-structured interviewing. The results confirmed that the smartphone is the main
means of reading journalistic content for young people, being a tool that stimulates and
facilitates the search for information. It was possible to collect expressions that indicated an
active stance of the youngster in this reading, with a critical eye and motivation for
discoveries in interaction with other young people.
inseridos no ciberespaço.

LANGUAGE LEARNING VIA AN ANDROID AUGMENTED REALITY SYSTEM / LANGUAGE LEARNING VIA AN ANDROID AUGMENTED REALITY SYSTEMBeder, Paweł January 2012 (has links)
Augmented Reality (AR) can be described as one of possible steps between real world and fully virtual reality. Into this mixed reality we can make an overlay with virtual objects onto the real world typically by capturing camera images in real-time to produce a new layer to the environment with which we can interact. Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) is a term used when equipment through which we achieve AR is small in size and typically easy to carry e.g. a smartphone or a tablet. The concept of using AR in facilitating learning and improving its quality seems to attract more attention in the academic world in recent years. One of the areas that receive much attention is AR language learning. In this thesis an experiment on a group of 20 people was conducted to answer the question: “Is MAR language learning system a viable solution for language learning?” For the purpose of the experiment an AR Language Learning Tool was designed for Android smartphones. This AR Language Learning Tool facilitated vocabulary learning by displaying 3D objects along with their spelling and providing audio of pronunciation. Participants were divided into an equal control group and test group. The control group learned new vocabulary through classic flashcards while the test group used the previously designed AR Language Learning Tool. The Vocabulary Knowledge Scale questionnaires were provided for both groups right after learning and one week later. By performing statistical analysis with Student’s t-test on gathered data it was discovered that there is a positive improvement in long term recall rate in the AR Language Learning Tool group when compared with the flashcards learning group. No difference was found in short term recall rate between both groups. Participants also provided feedback about their quality of experience and enthusiasm for new learning methods. Their answers were very positive and provided proof that mobile AR is a viable method of learning vocabulary.

Energy Consumptions of Text Input Methods on Smartphones / Energiförbrukningen för textinmatningsmetoder på SmartphonesObison, Henry, Ajuorah, Chiagozie January 2013 (has links)
Mobile computing devices, in particular smartphones are powered from Lithium-ion batteries, which are limited in capacity. With the increasing popularity of mobile systems, various text input methods have been developed to improve user experience and performance. Briefly, text input method is a user interface that can be used to compose an electronic mail, configure mobile Virtual Private Network, and carryout bank transactions and online purchases. Efficient energy management in these systems requires an extensive knowledge of where and how the energy is being used. This thesis investigates the energy consumption of text input methods on various smartphones. Hence, the authors modeled the energy consumption profile of text input methods on smartphones and analyze the energy usage benchmarks of the battery. This thesis presents a systematic technique to conduct application specific measurements. The data analysis showed substantial variations in the energy consumptions of various text input methods on a smartphone. / The main objective of this research is to find a systematic and measurement based method to evaluate the energy efficiency of the selected text input methods used on smartphones namely: SwiftKey, Swype, and Zimpl. Using Power Monitor equipment and MATLAB, the energy consumption log files of the text input methods were collected for each of the smartphones, and analyzed. This research introduces an optimized technique to carry-out application specific test on smartphones. It is hoped that the thesis will be beneficial to smartphone battery manufacturers and developers of text input techniques on how to make users’ smartphone battery last longer.

Äldresanvändning av smartphones ur ett användbarhetsperspektivJonsson, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
Svenskarna och internet (2014) points out that the use of smartphones continues to grow, despite this only 14 percent of the elderly in the age of 60 or more, interacts with a smartphone daily. The reason why older people do not use smartphones are thought to be because the technology is difficult and hard. The purpose of this study was to find shortcomings in usability for older people when interacting with a smartphone as well as what improvements should be made to increase the usability. To achieve this purpose five older respondents in the age of 60 years or older were observed and interviewed. Furthermore, a separate model has been created based on previous research to analyze the results. The analysis resulted in a revised model with existing shortcomings and pronounced improvement proposals. The shortcomings found in smartphone user interfaces are lack of information on how to perform different tasks, which means they are guessing solutions, another lack is that icons are alike. According to the study, descriptive texts should be provided to each icon. The improvements that older people would prefer to increase the usability are that it should be one gesture to navigate through the phone which is the dragged gesture, pointed information in a smartphone how they perform their tasks and icons as well as buttons should be named after performance. Proposals for future research are to investigate differences between older novices and older skilled users of smartphones and at what age older people are getting worse in interacting with smartphones.

Locked-in : en studie om överförbara kunskaperPerslöv Sandberg, Alicia, Åkhagen Holm, Rebecka January 2016 (has links)
In the global market many smartphones vendors struggle to reach more customers. The competition leads to vendors developing technologies that are platform dependent, to keep their customers. This means that customers cannot take advantage of their skills in the integration of other operating systems, which makes them locked-in with their current supplier. Therefore we want to examine the concept of skill transferability and see how knowledge can be transferred to another operating system. To examine this we conducted a test where Android users had to perform tasks on iOS and Windows Phone. These tests were observed to examine whether the knowledge required to perform the task where transferable from Android or not. The results showed that when an operating system is similar to Android it provides more opportunity for the users to use their previous knowledge about their operating system and the technology play a major role in the differences between various ages.

Kartläggning och jämförelse av multiplattformsutvecklingsverktyg för smartphones / Survey and comparison of cross platform mobile application development tools for smartphonesJonsson, Emma January 2015 (has links)
