Modelování vlivu sněhových zásob na letní minimální průtoky v horských povodích / Modelling the impact of seasonal snowpack on summer low flows in mountain catchments

Nedělčev, Ondřej January 2017 (has links)
This thesis analyses the impacts of winter snowpack and subsequent spring and summer liquid precipitation on low flows in the warm season. Meltwater is an important source of groundwater recharge. From groundwater storage streams are donated during summer months. Snow accumulation during cold season is reduced and snowmelt occurs earlier, which is a result of climate change and leads to lower groundwater recharge rates. That is the reason why change in snow cover dynamics affects summer low flows. Main goals of this thesis are to analyse how snow cover affects low flows I warm season and to compare it with impact of spring and summer precipitation. A conceptual runoff model HBV-light has been used to simulate the snow water equivalent (SWE) and streamflow from three mountain catchments. The integrated multi-variable model calibration procedure was used to calibrate the model. The model was used to simulate the snow and streamflow from 1981 to 2014. Besides the mentioned simulation, two hypothetical scenarios have been performed. These two scenarios accounted for reduced spring and summer liquid precipitation. In the first scenario, precipitation after maximum annual SWE was reduced to 75% of the real measured precipitation. In the second scenario, precipitation was reduced to 50% of the real...

Stanovení rozsahu sněhové pokrývky z radarových dat / Determination of Snow Cover Area from RADAR imagery

Součková, Jana January 2010 (has links)
This thesis deals with snow cover mapping by using time-series of SAR images of the sensors ENVISAT ASAR and TerraSAR-X. The methodology is based on the so-called Nagler's algorithm, which is based on determination of the change of absorption of radar signal due to the liquid water content in the snow cover. The resulting ratio image is classified into the areas with wet snow or without it according to the selected threshold value. The results are compared with the maps of snow cover derived from MODIS optical data and with data from meteorological stations of CHMI. The main aims of this work are to suggest most suitable conditions (time of the year, weather) for acquisition of reference images, to find the change of the threshold value with respect the chosen reference image and the type of land cover. The same methodology should then be applied on the radar data of shorter wavelength. The obtained results will be further used for improving the methodology of snow cover mapping from SAR data in the Czech Republic.

Modelování množství sněhové pokrývky v malých povodích / Snow water content modelling in small catchments

Němečková, Klára January 2010 (has links)
Title: Snow water content modelling in small catchments This work deals with modeling of amount of snow cover, snow water equivalent, respectively, on an experimental catchment in the Jizerské hory Mts. Measuring and modelling of the snow cover is an important part of water management practice from the perspective of reservoir operation and flood management. The first part of this thesis describes physical-geographical characteristics of the Jizerské hory Mts.especially from the climatological and hydrological point of view but also other charakteristics and conditions that may affect the dynamic of snow accumulation and melting are described with detailed focus on the experimental catchment of Černá Desná river - Jezdecká. Two modelling approaches were applied to simulate snow water equivalent (SWE) based on observed precipitation and temperature. Beside the well knowen SNOW17 model a simple method based on heat index was developed in this work and its parameters were calibrated based on measured timeseries of daily average air temperature, daily precipitation and observed SWE for winter periods 2001 to 2009. Both methods provided reasonably accurate estimates of SWE over the tested period, however it was found that the results for winters with extreme conditions (very warm or very cold) are less...

Změny podílu pevných a kapalných srážek v chladném půlroce a jejich vliv na jarní odtok z vybraných horských povodí / Changes in snowfall fraction in cold season and their impact on spring runoff in selected mountain catchments

Blšťák, Adam January 2018 (has links)
The precipitation falling as rain or snow has different impact on regional water resources and their annual distribution. Shift from solid to liquid form of precipitation following the increase of the surface air temperatures could be important because such change could influence the timing of spring runoff and cause water scarcity in summer. In this study, the spatial and temporal variations of ratio of snowfall to total precipitation (Sf), mean air temperature, day of year of melt-out and winter and spring runoff is analysed. Data were examined for 11 meteorological and 6 hydrological stations in the mountains catchment in Czechia for November-April 1965-2014. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Kendall trend test. Major results show that Sf has been decreasing strongly throughout the whole examined area, with the strongest decrease in the foothill area of the northern mountains of Czechia. Stronger decrease is observed in lower elevations, at the stations with meant air temperature close to melt temperature. Strongest decrease was observed in March and the weakest decrease was observed in December and April, The significant decreases in Sf are associated with large increase in mean winter air temperatures. Due to the increasing mean air temperature in the cold season, the total rainfall is...

Natural regeneration on clearcuts at the lower limit of the mountain hemlock zone

Klinka, Karel January 1997 (has links)
The Mountain Hemlock (MH) zone includes all subalpine forests along British Columbia’s coast. It occurs at elevations where most precipitation falls as snow and the growing season is less than 4 months long. The zone includes the continuous forest of the forested subzones and the tree islands of the parkland subzones (Figure 1). Old-growth stands are populated by mountain hemlock, Pacific silver fir, and Alaska yellow-cedar, and are among the least-disturbed ecosystems in the world. Canopy trees grow slowly and are commonly older than 600 years, while some Alaska yellow-cedars may be up to 2000 years old. Early regeneration failures followed slashburning and the planting of unsuitable species. Currently, the most successful and feasible option for reforesting cutovers is natural regeneration with a mix of the three main tree species, but uncertainties remain about the temporal and spatial pattern of regeneration, changes in species composition, and the time required for stand establishment after cutting. Our study addressed these concerns by examining regeneration patterns on 6 sites that were clearcut 11-12 years prior to sampling and left to regenerate naturally. The sites were located at the lower limits of the zone in the Tetrahedron Range, near Sechelt, at elevations from 1060-1100m.

TRANSMISSION AND PATHOGENESIS OF HANTAVIRUS / HANTAVIRUS ÖVERFÖRING OCH PATOGENES

Pettersson, Lisa January 2015 (has links)
Hantaviruses are the causative agents of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia, and of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. Transmission to humans usually occurs by inhalation of aerosolized virus-contaminated rodent excreta. To date, human-to-human transmission has only been described for the Andes hantavirus. The mode of transmission of Andes hantavirus is not yet known, but transmission through saliva has been suggested. In Sweden, we have one hantavirus that is pathogenic to humans, Puumala virus (PUUV), which is endemic in Central and Northern Europe. It induces a relatively mild form of HFRS, also called nephropathia epidemica (NE). The rodent reservoir is the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). The mechanism behind the pathogenesis of hantavirus is complex and probably involves both virus-mediated and host-mediated mechanisms. The aim of this project was to investigate the transmission mechanisms and pathogenesis of hantavirus disease in humans. In our first study, we described the largest outbreak of PUUV so far in Sweden. We investigated factors that might be important for causing the outbreak, and suggested that a peak in the bank vole population together with concurrent extreme weather conditions most probably contributed to the outbreak. Our next studies concentrated on human-to-human transmission of hantaviruses. We found PUUV RNA in saliva from PUUV-infected patients, suggesting that there is PUUV in the saliva of infected humans, although no person-to person transmission appears to occur with PUUV.  In the studies that followed, we showed that human saliva and human salivary components could inhibit hantavirus replication. We also found PUUV-specific IgA in the saliva of PUUV-infected patients, which might prevent person-to-person transmission of the virus.  In the final study, we focused on the pathogenesis of NE. One hundred five patients were included in a prospective study.  They were divided into a group with mild disease and a group with moderate or severe disease. We found that the immune response had a dual role in disease development. It was partly responsible for development of severe disease, with significantly higher amounts of neutrophils in severely ill patients, but it was also protective against severe disease, because patients with mild disease had higher levels of PUUV-specific IgG. In conclusion, a peak in the bank vole population in combination with extreme weather will increase the risk of human infection, PUUV RNA is present in saliva, PUUV-specific IgA and salivary components inhibit person-to-person transmission of PUUV, and the immune response is important for the pathogenesis of PUUV and the severity of the disease.

Compréhension des patrons spatiaux de diversité et de productivité chez les plantes alpines : application de l'imagerie à haute résolution dans les Alpes françaises / Understanding spatial patterns of diversity and productivity in alpine plant communities : application of high-resolution imagery in the French Alps

Carlson, Bradley 14 November 2016 (has links)
The central aim of this thesis is to contribute to current understanding of environmental drivers of plant diversity and productivity as well as of recent changes in vegetation structure in a temperate alpine context, the French Alps. My approach draws on methods from remote sensing and plant ecology by combining plot-based measures of plant diversity and climate data with high-resolution imagery. Chapter I demonstrates the importance of quantifying snow cover duration for predicting patterns of plant taxonomic and functional diversity, and also highlights the ongoing challenge of modeling spatial gross primary productivity dynamics in alpine landscapes. In Chapter II, I explore the utility of satellite imagery for quantifying environmental conditions experienced by alpine plant communities, and further show how metrics of snow cover duration and peak productivity can be used to differentiate habitat for dominant alpine plant communities. I also explore how functional diversity mediates NDVI responses to highly contrasting snow years. Chapter III provides new evidence of recent shifts occurring in high-elevation plant communities in the French Alps in response to climate and land-use change. Analysis of the forest-grassland ecotone in the Vercors Regional Park shows a strong dynamic of forest expansion in response to overall climate warming and local shifts in grazing-related land-use practices, which supports findings from other studies conducted elsewhere in the Alps and Pyrenees. In the second part of Chapter III, for the first time I present evidence of greening dynamics in a protected area of the French Alps, the Ecrins National Park. I propose that a decrease in snow cover duration and pronounced warming occurring in the 1980s likely contributed to increased canopy productivity in high alpine contexts, and are driving long-term greening in the absence of land-use change. Taken collectively, rather than pushing a specific aspect alpine ecology forward, my work helps to fill out our working knowledge of alpine plant communities and serves to solidify a number of field-based observations by carrying out robust spatial analyses.
