The Brazilian cities are marked by excluding and selective urbanization processes in which the contrasts and inequalities are deeply present in the urban space structure and in its landscape configuration. In São Paulo metropolitan area, since the 1970’s, a model of real estate development appears, characterized by isolated buildings within a large, walled and protect area served by recreational spaces and services usually found in the open city. The recent increase in urban scenario, in which rich and poor people many times occupy the same spaces, this type of real estate development has gained space and spread from fear experiences and urban violence speeches, showing the historical social segregation processes. Another dimension of closed residential areas is that of symbolic matters expressed by the architecture of these developments, either on its spatial structure or on its stylistic choices. In this sense, we pretend to analyze the phenomenon of diffusion of this model of real estate development – the gated communities – from two different but complementary points of view we can define from the concept of segregation and distinction.

The elites in the village : study of the social distinction through archaeological indicators on both sides of the Channel Sea, from the 11th to the 15th centuryRego, Diane 17 October 2018 (has links)
This PhD aims both at demonstrating that archaeological remains could and should be socially interpreted and at revising our - sometimes simplified - perspective on the socio-economic stratification of medieval villages. This project is based on the example of the excavations situated at Trainecourt (Grentheville - Calvados) where an “aristocratic” house had been established in the centre of the hamlet. Thus, a method has been developed to grasp village elites, of whom we know some details thanks to medieval written sources but who had hardly been studied in medieval archaeology.By using a comparative approach that draws a parallel between both French and English archaeological data and scientific perspectives; by adopting the theoretical frame offered by the Social Archaeology; by studying the social processes (the distinction, coming closer to, the performance) that are expressed by patterns of consumption in the settlement; by examining aristocratic sites (manor houses, moated sites, castles, etc.), we managed to establish a list of thirty-four archaeological indicators revealing an outstanding social identity. They are grouped in three categories: the use of space, the morphology of the settlement and a specific lifestyle. This repertoire was then compared to rural sites (villages, hamlets, etc.) situated on both sides of the Channel Sea, to emphasize some details of social stratification. As a whole, elite units have been spotted out in seven villages or hamlets and socio-economic hierarchies established for a dozen more.

This research identifies and analyzes the factors that conditioned social, cultural, economic and spatial organization transformations occurred from the 1910 to the 1950 decades in Torres, Porto Alegre elite members’ main beach resort. This analysis focuses on the different symbolic resources established by the social groups within the beach space. A description of the scenario elevation is made by considering the traveler’s view along the centuries – since the invention of the Torres beach starts from its natural beauties and geographic location and parallels to the transformation of the coast in a beach that follows the European model, which considers the beach firstly as a therapeutic space and then as a leisure and social distinction place provided by the free times. It is the establishment of a new view regarding the beach, the social invention of nature through the interpenetration between nature and culture (and its appropriation) which will result in social power. Besides, it will give Torres beach ot

Between Extremes of Poverty and Luxury: Sociocultural Dynamics of Consumption in Early Postwar Japan (1945-1959)Gengenbach, Katrin 03 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The dissertation deals with rivalling discourses on dynamics of consumption in early postwar Japan, led by the theses of Bourdieu on social distinction, Lefebvre\\\'s analysis of spaces, the politics of noise and a discourse analysis after Laclau/Mouffe. While consumerism began to develop into a great energetic ideology of a middle class in Japan in the 1960s, the early postwar renegotiation of social spaces produced a form of social noise and highly moving social environment and spaces: alternative discourses and debates on what poverty, luxury or even consumerism itself were, emerged from within these spaces of noise. Between luxury and poverty, the black market was one of the central places of consumption, but also developed into the central social space which defined both poverty and luxury from within and beyond the blurred social boundaries. In the end, social discourses of distinction against poverty and black market consumers also encouraged social mobility and shaped an exotic ideal of \\\"European\\\" luxury.

Social Distinction And Symbolic Boundaries In A Globalized Context: Leisure Spaces In IstanbulLortoglu, Ceren 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This study focuses on the conditions and processes that strengthen social distinctions and symbolic boundaries in society. In order to fully grasp the conditions of these processes, it is not sufficient to simply study them as they are carried out on a daily basis. Therefore in this study firstly a general overview of the matter evaluated in the context of globalization. Although a variety of means are at work in constructing social distinctions and symbolic boundaries, in this study three of them have been taken up: leisure, consumption and space. In order to reveal the relationship between them and social distinctions, it examines two different leisure spaces: Laila and Kaktus.

Interdicted limit between the so-called "civilization" and "uneducated people", the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Guarapiranga, agricultural frontier zone in Termo de Mariana during the mid-eighteenth century, was a very convenient place to steady differences and outsource hierarchies, and we saw that the potentially fine men of the locality - Portuguese, and minimally wealthy whites - sought, among other means, the qualification as “Familiares do Santo Ofício” to have a prestigious position guaranteed. We consider the qualification a strategy for social mobility, which served them as an important step in the hierarchy climb-up, where uniting purity of blood and material wealth was the way to penetrate the core of the local elites. The post of “Familiar do Santo Ofício” served, therefore, as an attribute for ascending in a society that in the mid-eighteenth century was in the process of rooting. By reconstituting the relational space of our characters, we found that the reciprocity networks that they wove with respectable men of the town - even with other inquisitorial agents and members of the local ecclesiastical structure - before applying for the position, were indispensable for them to achieve the position of secular officials of the Holy Office. Finally, we followed our characters’ paths after they had acquired the post of “Familiares do Santo Ofício” and we realized that the inquisitorial patent was longed to meet different expectations and realities of each of our characters, but in general, the appointment was an important contributor to open doors for the conquer titles and patents of greater prestige.

A study of economic and social logics among two cultural expressions in the city of Lima : the gastronomic experience and electronic music partiesMatta, Rául 09 November 2009 (has links)
The analysis of the social construction of reputation around these globalized activities reveals that, although the value granted to these practices may be short-lived as far as it is about cultural fields crossed by fashion effects, it is nevertheless founded on mechanisms of social distinction appealing to meanings firmly implanted in the Peruvian society. An immersion in these « exclusive » and « trendy » circles demonstrates that these mechanisms, very subtle and strongly articulated with trade logics, convey values and attitudes contributing to the construction (or reconstruction) of « Lima’s bourgeois culture ».

Salvador
