Epilinguistic discourse and urbanity : Hanoi, sociolinguistically a singular city ?

Đặng, Thị Thanh Thuý 05 May 2015 (has links)
The present research, in the field of urban sociolinguistics, studies the links created between space, language and identity in the discourses of young urban residents. Based on field surveys (semidirective interviews, questionnaires, hidden speakers), this approach Hanoï's urban weight to show in several kinds of urban residents practices (sociolinguistical, cultural, socio-spatial, identity-related practices…). This research is also an attempt to show how epilinguistical discourses contribute to the production of substandart norms and to the standardization of the sociolinguistic space of Hanoï's urbanspeeches.

The variable use of diacritics in French-language chat: An apparent-time variationist study

Al-Rashdan, Omar 05 1900 (has links)
After providing an historical overview of the French spelling system and orthographic variation, this study analyzes selected internal (i.e., linguistic) factors and one external (i.e., social) factor that can influence the use of diacritics in online French-language chat sessions. From a corpus of synchronous computer-mediated communication, 3,855 tokens of graphemes capable of bearing diacritics were coded with the following scheme: Letter, Diacritic, Grapheme (i.e., Letter and Diacritic combined), Date of Participation, and Age Group of Participant. A multivariate (VARBRUL) analysis determined that Grapheme exerts the most influence on variation.

Présentations de la Grammaire et Représentations du Discours Dans les Manuels de Français Publiés aux États-Unis: une Étude Diachronique / [Presentations of grammar and representations of discourse in French textbooks published in the United States: A diachronic study].

Grall, Christophe 05 1900 (has links)
This study partially replicates and re-explores specific dimensions of a textbook analysis of the presentation and use of specific grammatical elements and sociolinguistic variants in textbooks published in the United States for learners of French. Authenticity is situated as a central construct in the analysis of interrogatives, relative pronouns, and the negative particle ne in selected textbooks and ancillary materials. The findings reveal that little progress has been made over the past twenty years in integrating authentic representations of discourse into French-as-a-foreign-language textbooks.

This fact is an acknowledged concern in sociolinguistic research. In this work, we analyze commonsensical discourses on language as constitutive element of the Brazilian nation, which, we consider, operates in the process of national identity construction. Resorting to a diachronic and qualitative perspective, we deal with images in the classic Casa Grande & Senzala (by Gilberto Freire, whose first edition is from 1933), such as Portuguese with suggar ¿ or the softening of Brazilian Portuguese -, together with utterances from the 19th century on how Brazilian citizens use their language. The objective is to highlight how, in both utterance groups, the emerging representations operates both in the imaginary on language as in the social groups that use it. This process also works towards the linguistic identity construction: how does the individual recognizes herself in her language, how does the individual refers to it, what is said about it that is accepted as being true / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Morais, Caroline de 04 August 2009 (has links)
This study is researching whether the forms of integration and socialization of migrants depend or not on the language in the use of linguistic variations and socio cultural aspects, referring to the sociolinguistic contribution to analyze how this integration takes place, observing the obstacle and prejudice notions. The general objective consists of analyzing the processes of social and linguistic integration based on the linguistic use and social interaction processes of the migrants. The corpus consists of narrative interviews, which proportion the argument through the data obtained. This way, emerge the differences and the assimilation of the language between the migrants and the local population. The research uses the analytical method which is analysis of the general concepts and information obtained from the interviews. The data shows that the integration difficulties occur not only because of language problems but also due to cultural and social problems. This study reveals that social interaction is realized through sociolinguistic sensibility among migrants and local inhabitants.

In this research, I intend to demonstrate how Sociolinguistics and its assumptions are able to extend the communicative competence of students speaking of the common urban variety (FARACO, 2008) who are in process of understanding and acquisition of the language they use. One goal is to get them to think about the use of language according to the most diverse social and interactional contexts. Therefore, undo prejudices that emerge from traditional practices and promote education which connects linguistic diversity as a result of social diversity is also the aim of this study. Thus, it is essential that the whole school encourages reflection on the mother tongue, thought shared by Bagno (2007, p.116) by revealing that: "It is precisely around that we should strive to create a pedagogy of linguistics variation and change, sociolinguistics rehabilitation, where the language is seen as heterogeneous, variable, mutant, subject to the vicissitudes and incidents of social life. ". In order to make such discussions more satisfactory to the reality of the classroom, the research described here is anchored in an action research work carried out in a class of ninth year of a private school in Juiz de Fora (MG). Basing on the methodology of ethnographic action research, I aimed to develop a pedagogy of language variation (FARACO, 2008), through Educational Sociolinguistics (Bortoni-RICARDO, 2004). I found that, from this proposal, the sociolinguistic education and the assumptions which support it can satisfactorily contribute to enlarge the communicative competence of students in the process of understanding and acquisition of the mother tongue.

My constitution of life space and my formation during childhood, adolescence and adulthood at a slum was the driving force that created in me concerns, interests and motivation in order to develop this research. In this work, I aimed at presenting the development of a research which sought to show the linguistic development and the production of children’s and adolescent’s knowledge living in the neighborhood where I lived, where there is a social project called Curumim developed by Associação Municipal de Apoio Comunitário – AMAC, by Juiz de Fora Mayor, Minas Gerais. The goal was to investigate whether the acting classes, such as the ones offered by Curumim, would offer effective contributions for the development of the communicative competence of students. The route to collect the data during the classes occurred by the notes on the field diary, beliefs questionnaires; socioeconomic questionnaires and audio electronic recording. These resources equipped the data collection and took part in a sample that constituted the corpus which composed this research. The acting class is not a traditional Portuguese class, however, as a textual genre, it includes several aspects that are able to help to develop a work inclined to reflect about the language, through the principles of Educational Sociolinguistics, mainly contemplating a work through a culturally sensitive pedagogy (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004) able to take to the children from this community possibilities of enlarging their language competence. Furthermore, the classes bring characteristics that are essentially specific of children’s sociocultural context, because the activities are conducted from what is significative for them.

An acoustic study of Canadian raising in three dialects of North American English

Onosson, D. Sky 30 April 2018 (has links)
“Canadian Raising” (CR) is a phonological process typical of Canadian English, defined as the production of /aj, aw/ with raised nuclei before voiceless codas, e.g. in about. This dissertation investigates the relationship between CR and another process which abbreviates vowels in the same phonological context in most English dialects: pre-voiceless vowel abbreviation (PVVA). This study sampled three North American dialects: Canada, and the American West and North. Comparisons of vowel duration and formant trajectories revealed common patterns and specific differences between these dialects related to both CR and PVVA. Comparisons of vowel formant trajectories were conducted using statistical techniques for comparing curvilinear datasets, employed in novel methodology which utilizes multiple models of time-scaling. Results indicate that the allophonic production of /aw/ differs in Canadian English in relation to the other dialects, while /aj/ follows a common pattern in all three. I argue that PVVA is achieved through the gestural reorganization of vowels preceding voiceless coda, with the dynamic nature of diphthongs making possible several patterns of abbreviation, two of which are attested in these data: truncation of the onset i.e. the diphthongal nucleus, and compression of the overall trajectory; truncation of the offset is also attested for some monophthongs. Differences in selection of which of these abbrevatory patterns applies to /aw/ in Canadian English versus other dialects accounts for the observed differences in phonetic output. These results indicate that it is worth reconsidering several aspects of the current conception of CR, as follows. First, diphthong-raising processes can be directly linked to the more common process of vowel abbreviation, with consideration of how diphthongal gestures are organized, and reorganized in relation to post-vocalic voicing gestures. Second, that /aw/-raising appears to be distinctly Canadian. And third, that /aj/-raising is not specifically Canadian, suggesting that the two terms be described and named distinctly. This dissertation contributes to the literature on sociophonetics in two major ways: by indicating how CR is directly connected to PVVA in contemporary speech, beyond their surmised historical connections; and, by developing novel methodology for the analysis of dynamic formant trajectories, involving comparison of different time-scaling methods. / Graduate
